  1. Ookla Season Goeth, all ooklas must relinquish their names or DIE A PAINFUL DEATH INVOLVING ME BEING AND TOO LAZY, ALSO TO PUT ADDITIONALLY, ACTUALIY goOD SPLELING HAER Anyway, if you wish to avoid this terrible fate, stop being an ookla.
  2. Ookla Season Cometh! Ookla Season is one of our most venerated traditions here on 17th Shard. To honor the birthday of Peter Ahlstrom, Brandon Sanderson's assistant, we change our names to "Ookla the [Epithet]" on his birthday, November 26th. Most people change back after a week, but Ookla Season doesn't officially end until Koloss Head-Munching Day (Brandon Sanderson's birthday) in December. So, yeah. Ookla season! Hopefully you won't be as confused as I was my first time around.
  3. Some of you may know of a tradition that goes around the Shard here, coming the 26th, when everyone will become “Ookla” in honor of someone’s birthday or whatnot. In Nazh’s notes (I believe it’s him) before page 845, when he’s explaining the glyph of Roshar, at the very bottom right he mentions the next page was “how to swear like a Horneater,” then proceeded to say Oo’kali’laa’e! (Sound familiar?) Someone tell me if I’m just grasping at straws here, or if I actually found something Brandon put in there. And I’m already claiming Oo’kali’laa’e of Iron just to remind everyone who found this, lol.
  4. This is a public service announcement. It has been brought to the attention 17th Shard's Department of Order Enforcement, that a rogue Elsecaller is on the loose. He, or she has been soulcasting servers into Ooklas. We advise extreme caution to all 17th Sharders. Stay in your safe forum areas, and avoid all topics located in the Forum Games and Random Stuff. A large amount of Elsecaller activity has been spotted in that area. Symptoms of self soulcasting include: intense paranoia, random switching of usernames and profile images, obsessive role-playing, and high usage of banana cream. If you display any of these symptoms, please contact your local 17th Shard Order Enforcement station. Remember: "You are not an Ookla. You are [insert appropriate nomenclature]." Thank you.
  5. Hello, there, little ones! You might be running around confused at the sudden appearance of many strange claiming to be an "ookla the X", while wearing the guise and skin of your former friends. You may be saying to yourself "What sort of macabre post-halloween but not quite non-demoninational-winter-solstice-holiday magical trickery is this?!" Well, fear not my child, for I, grand pappy ookla himself, shall explain to you this tradition. This tradition, which you find so strange, is non other than a celebration! A celebration of Life! For, you see, a long loooooong time ago, an utterly, devastatingly, unimaginably long time ago, about 30 to 40-ish years ago, the person you know as brandon's assistant, @PeterAhlstrom was born! This, in and of itself, is not the origination of this tradition. No. This tradition comes much later. Fast forward to the existance of the 17th shard, and you'll find a number of young forumites, who decided it should be a grand festival! Unfortunately, due to the spread out nature of people on the internet, there was no way to show our love and support as a community. "But wait!" Exclaimed one young, eager forum go-er. "We could change our names!" "That's dumb" responded nearly everybody, "What good does that do?" "It would just be confusing," said still others. "Well, do you have a better idea?" retorted the snippy young upstart. And they did not. And so it was decided, every year on his grand celebration of his birth, people would change their names! The decision was made to name change to be similar to peter's original forum handle, Ookla The Mok, which he abandoned to live and work in a more professional capacity. And so now you know the tale of this ancient tradition as old as maybe 6 or 7 years, give or take. The festivities usually last about a week, or until we get tired of it, enjoy everyone!
  6. Hello all! Once again it is time for the yearly festivities of the ookla the mokovial©! You may have noticed other, stinkier threads that have been necro'd about it, but i figured that info is all completely outdated and unreliable and besides, you can't trust that shifty Kaymyth, can you! Not when you have ol' grand pappy Eero here to tell you the real truth! So....Ookla you say? You want to know the real reason for the holidays my boy? Well just sit right there and let me lay about some truth upon you! You see, a long, long time ago, when earth was in a more primordial state, Fierce God Fire and Willowy God Water were up in arms. "Water, you always douse my passions!" Claimed Fierce God Fire. "Well you, Fire, you always burn away my securities!" retorted Willowy God Water. Both were at an impasse. So, they turned to the wisdom of wise mother earth. "Mother earth," they said in unison, "Why must we always be so at odds? Can you not help us find a common ground?" "Well, children," Started wise mother earth in her slow drawl, "Let me think on it." And so she thought. Long and hard she thought. For eons and ages. Fast forward a few hundred millennia, and not that long ago (on a cosmic perspective), a man you may know by the name of Peter Ahlstrom, who happens to be brandon's assistant, was born! And that's why we rename ourselves to "Ookla the <something>" every year, children! Right up until koloss head munching day, i.e. brandon's birthday (or until we get bored of it)
  7. Hey folks been gone for a month or so, I disappeared to hide in my Spoiler Free Zone, I knew if I logged in I would ruin something.. But Someone, please explain to me why everyone is changing names to Ookla the "noun".
  8. This is going up a bit early, just because people are already talking about it and new folks are asking questions. @Chaos says the old thread isn't good enough and tasked me with making a new one, probably because I opened my big mouth at just the wrong time. So lo, the explanation comes: in just a bare few weeks, an annual phenomenon of confusion will bear down upon us like a shower of angry Tribbles.* Every year, as the days grow short and the weather grows cold, we creep slowly towards two great holidays that hover near the end of the year, ready to embrace us into their festivities. Families will gather, feasts will be had, and general revelry will echo throughout the land! I refer, of course, to the birthdays of Peter Ahlstrom and Brandon Sanderson.** If you don't know who Peter is, well, he's Brandon's assistant editorial director, and pours a ton of work into supporting the writing endeavors of our favorite author. Back in the days of the Timewasters' Guide, he roamed the forums under the moniker "Ookla the Mok." In order to remember and honor the days when he still had time to frolick among us unhindered, we change our screen names to some variant of "Ookla the <____>" beginning on his birthday, November 26. It's all terribly bewildering if you don't know what's happening. I joined the forum in late October of 2014, so I had barely a month to get settled in before suddenly I was surrounded by Ooklas. They were everywhere. So many Ooklas. And I had no idea why. So now I tell you all, so that hopefully you will be less confused than I was as a poor ickle noob. A lot of folks just play with it for a week or so, but some are hardcore enough to keep the madness going until Koloss Head-Munching Day (aka Brandon's birthday) in December. Enjoy the upcoming festivities! *Don't worry. The Tribbles have tiny parachutes. They'll be fine. **Why, what holidays did you think I meant?
  9. Welcome one and all once again to our yearly tradition! That's right Ookla the Mokovial is now! For those new to the tradition, every year around this time, we have fun renaming ourselves to "Ookla the _____" in celebration of @PeterAhlstrom, Brandon's assistant! For those wondering about the lore behind this holiday, i say shove off! ...Ok, fine. This tradition was started to recognize peter for generally being awesome for all the unseen work he does! The reason for the name change is because way back on the time waster's guide forums, peter went by the username "Ookla the Mok". In order to commemorate him and his old username, we came up with this tradition mostly off handedly and/or as a joke some 5 or 6 years back, and it just kinda stuck! The holiday generally runs until we get bored of it, which usually goes for about a week or so, so until then, try to come up with a creative, festive name!
  10. Hello, all! By now I'm sure some of our more perceptive users (and probably anyone with eyes) and are new around here might be asking themselves "What's with all these ookla names?" Long story short, it's a holiday tradition around here to rename yourself "ookla the ____" in honor of none other than Brandon's assistant Peter Ahlstrom we like to call 'Ookla the Mokovial' (or at least i do). This holiday was founded when Peter decided to drop his previous moniker of "Ookla the Mok" that he used way back in the day on the timewaster's guide forums, for the more sensible (and boring) approach of using his real name! A few people around here found that to be unfortunate, and in response, we decide once a year, we should all rename ourselves in commemoration. This holiday coincides with peter's birthday (November 26th), but a few members have decided to start early (no big deal! as of writing this, november 26th is a few hours away by the mountain time zone peter resides in, thus me making the topic a bit early!). The holiday usually runs about a week or so, but generally goes "until we get bored of it". Members usually have fun trying to guess who's who in light of changed around profiles, and such a thread is already running! So anyone new to the tradition: you now know what's up, so get creative with those names and have some fun! Enjoy, guys! --Jiverongal
  11. Now is the time to guess Ooklas! Please only post a guess if you haven't cheated by checking name history or such-like! Let's begin.
