  1. In your opinion, did Shallan understand Wit's advice and did she take the correct steps based on that advice? Did she achieve what she needed, or is she on a journey towards it? Do you think Adolin helps her through this process and if yes, how exactly?
  2. A new major cosmere book means that my CAH decks are in need of an update! So I present: CARDS AGAINST OATHBRINGER This expansion of 21 black cards and 57 white cards serves as an update to the previous two Cards Against the Cosmere decks (which can be found here and here) and has been stress tested for hilarity and quality to bring you only the very best. Let me know if you've got a favorite!
  3. So, I was going back through all of the drawings and found that the "Sea of Lost Lights" is an exact photo negative of Roshar, in other words in Roshar where land is is "Water" and where water is is " Land". This has probably already been brought up and discussed (Feel free to send a link), but my first thought of this was Shadesmar. In the notes on the map it talks about "Spren Fishing" being illegal in a certain place, and there are different cities and such, including a portion of ocean called " The Glasswater Deep" refering to the Shadesmar "Ocean" being made of small glass beads. Even the spot where the mountains near Kholinar are is labeled the " Salavashi Trench". We can easily infer this is Shadesmar, but my question is who made this map, what each city is (Which kind of spren does it belong to), and what some of the names mean. This is our first legit map of Shadesmar, let's get to theorizing!
  4. Hello everybody, I'm new around here, but here goes: During Dalinar's first vision where he brings Queen Fen in, Dalinar takes the place of one of the two radiants in the vision. He and windrunner radiant are on their way to save the village from the midnight essence attack. Dalinar decides to do some probing and tells the windrunner that he's having trouble summoning and dismissing his Shardplate, to which the windrunner replies, "Talk to Harkaylain, or your spren." So who is Harkaylain, and why would he/she know about fixing malfunctioning shardplate? Harkaylain was also mentioned in this vision in WoK as someone who is predicting a desolation (and seems to have a knack for getting desolation timing right).
  5. So, just got back from the release! So hype! But, to the point. I got two books, one for me and one for a friend, and I asked for new oaths we haven't heard yet. "My Glory and my Shame" - this one seems strange, could just be a nice quote. "You cannot have my pain" - possibly seems more legit. There was a ton of people, and it was late, so maybe these aren't what I asked for, but maybe. just something cool I guess.
  6. Welcome back to Shardcast. This week we are talking in exhaustive detail about Oathbringer's Part Three Epigraphs. And I do mean exhaustive, because this podcast is longer than our Oathbringer reaction podcast. There is, however, a huge deal to talk about. These are the Urithiru gemstones, and it is crazy. Listen on, and we come up with some excellent theories for the time around the Recreance and the False Desolation. Plus, we get on a lot of exciting tangents too. Note: there are full Oathbringer spoilers here! We also discuss the mystery project, Skyward, which we got a reading to the other week. Kerry's sick today, so I am hosting, along with Ian (WeiryWriter) and David (Windrunner). Stay tuned for next week when we talk about Part Four's Epigraphs--the last of the interesting ones.
  7. So, one of the main issues in the book (In my opinion) is how to get Urithiru up and running, fabrial wise. I have a bit of a theory on that. In one of the Epigraphs it talks about the Sibling and other spren connected to Urithiru The first thing I thought when I saw this was that the Radiants were withdrawing from Urithiru because the Sibling had left them. My personal thoughts on this were that the Sibling was what kept the tower running, made the fabrials work, etc. I believe that the Sibling resided in the gemstone pillar in the library of Urithiru, allowing all of the fabrials to work properly, and when they left the tower shut down, forcing the Radiants to leave. One thing that I thought when considering this theory was why did Re-Shephir reside in the gemstone pillar, and why could their presence be constantly felt. The first is obvious, if this theory proves to be true, because the gemstone is connected to all of Urithiru and possibly some of the Siblings power. This also answers the second question. The ENTIRE tower is one huge fabrial, and if the pillar is what powers it all Re-Shephir would be connected to everything, making her presence everywhere in the tower. This would also explain why the pillar can't be infused, because it was powered by a spren akin to the Stormfather or Nightwatcher
  8. Given that Not sure if this is the place for this. But there wasn't a discussion page
  9. I've had a bit of a theory for a while now that I'm going to get out. When Venli speaks to the Fused, they refer to Honors death/splintering as if they were there This could mean that either the Fused are partially from Honor or their part in killing him gave them power. Another point to this is that Sja-Anat says this I personally think that means they were from Honor, but Odium corrupted them. So, what if the Listeners/Unmade/Fused were from Honor, but were later corrupted by Odium. We have to also consider the fact that the Listeners used to bond with spren from Honor (As Venli is showing), but then as the Listeners put it " Were betrayed". What if they were corrupted by Odium forcing the spren to stop bonding with them, and the Listeners saw this as betrayal.
  10. I promised the Shard that if I got the Oathbringer cover giveaway I would memefy Oathbringer. I figured I would do the first chapter so you could see what that would entail! Also, I might make this meme thread anyway. But I still want the dust jacket! PROLOGUE: TO WEEP Eshonai remembers how surprised she was when she first saw humans. She remembers what she thought when she first saw humans with parshmen. She thinks about herself And about humans And about Alethi art She finds the king, but pretends to not speak Alethi She speaks to Gavilar, who is quite perceptive But then reveals his true plan Eshonai is afraid And tries to make him stop Gavilar doesn’t listen, but he does show Eshonai a map of Roshar, which is neat Klade, another Parshendi, finds Szeth to assasinste Gavilar, with the help of a voice in his head. Probably Odium, or maybe an unmade? And Gavilar is killed More to come one if I get the dust jacket! Ah, never mind, I’ll do it either way.
  11. Welcome to Shardcast, the Brandon Sanderson Podcast. Today we are here to discuss the Oathbringer's Part Two Epigraphs. That means it does have Oathbringer spoilers, and actually full Oathbringer spoilers--we can't contain our excitement. But we want to dive into some of the most mysterious epigraphs in Oathbringer today. This podcast also contains spoilers for the first Mistborn trilogy (Mistborn Era 1). We're joined today with Kerry, Ian, David, Eric, and Alyx. We are also joined by Alyx's terrible mic quality and Kerry's crackling on her mic. Just the quality you expect, I'm sure! Guess what? We have a YouTube channel now! There will at least be monthly videos on it, though you can expect around the craziness of a book release, we'll have a lot more than that. Stay tuned next week where you'll find us squeeing about Oathbringer in a longer-than-usual podcast. Of course, if you want to listen on Soundcloud, that's perfectly fine! We'll be posting there too. And eventually you'll get to see our beautiful faces on camera, don't worry, but not this month I'm afraid! Shardcast is actually coming to iTunes soon (yes, really!), and we'll let you know when it's in.
  12. I'm looking for some help on something that a friend noticed. So at the beginning of WOK, as far as I know, Taln had his Honorblade in Damnation (or however that works) and Szeth had Jezrien's. But when Taravangian tells Szeth that Kaladin must have one of the other Honorblades, to convince him that Kal isn't a surgebinder, my friend I just talked to says that Szeth replies with something like "One of the other seven?" which seems to imply that the Shin only had 8 total (and gave him one). I don't have any of my SA books with me right now, so I can't check any of this to be sure. How many blades do the Shin/Szeth have at the start of WOK, and if it's only 8 (including Jezrien's), do we know where the last one is?
  13. Is there a way we're keeping track of pages that have been updated for Oathbringer and those that need updates? (including pages with only partial updates that need their updates to be completed) I've been editing pages as I find information in the books. Also, is this https://www.tor.com/2014/08/06/stormlight-archive-scene-after-words-of-radiance/ listed anywhere as a canonical work? It needs some sort of title for referencing. "Unpublished Jasnah Chapter"?
  14. I have been doing a bit of speculation about Vivenna in OB. In case you were in la la land when reading the attack on Kholinar, we clearly see Vivenna using a sword akin to a shardblade, which is kept in a sheath almost constantly (And can't be dismissed like a shardblade), has no gemstone, is shorter than most shardblades, but MOST importantly drains the color from the soldiers killed instead of burning their eyes. So doing a bit of deduction, it works almost exactly like Nightblood, and I say almost, not exactly. We see and hear no reference to any harm to Vivenna dealt by the sword, no black veins, no draining of Breath. So... what is this sword, when was it made, and who made it? We can assume it was made by Vasher, maybe with help from Vivenna due to Vasher being the only one with knowledge of awakening metal. We can also assume it was made in between Warbreaker and Stormlight, A.K.A. Nightblood (The Book). But the question that still stands is what is it, and how doesn't it drain breath from Vivenna when she uses it?
  15. While Dalinar stole the show, I still enjoyed Lift scenes better. It was always a mystery where she would show up next and yet looking back on it she always showed up right when she was needed.
  16. As I read Oathbringer, I got really excited about something that may seem insignificant and I think people are glossing over it (although, there may be a thread that I was unable to find - If so let me know!). In chapter 81 of Oathbringer, we find out about how the Wall Guard was able to Soulcast food without the Screamers noticing. Hoid had brought a metal, which almost certainly is aluminum, to Kholinar and told Azure to only do Soulcasting inside a room lined with it. And Spanreeds were unable to connect to the outside. This in itself made me super excited. Aluminum on Roshar! Hoid is brilliant. Okay, but it made me wonder. Aluminum is extremely valuable for its abilities to block emotional allomancy, and if it can block all kinds of long distance investiture and such, that's amazing. And aluminum is hard to produce, at least basically everywhere in the Cosmere at this point in time, but it won't always be that way. Aluminum was once one of the most difficult metals to purify in our world, but now it is ubiquitous, this makes me wonder about the massive economic and investiture/magic advantage a world will have once it can refine aluminum easily. I think that the power of aluminum will be fascinating, particularly as it has only done relatively small things so far. And at some point, it will be common. There could even be things like aluminum tanks! What do you all think about this?
  17. So... hello? In my country some genius splited Oathbringer into two parts. Firts already come out and second one will be available in next two months. I just finished teading first part of it and I am searching for some PDF in english, to finish reading book. Can anybody help me? I would be really happy.
  18. Hey, so I've been trying to find the quote that contains what Dalinar wrote at the end of Oathbringer. It contained the phrases : "The most important words a man can say are I will do better..." and " The most important step a man can take is the next one." I borrowed the book from the library to read and have since returned it. That part of the novel really resonated with me, and I'd like to be able to see it again in context. If someone could please reply to this with that quote, I'd be really grateful! Thank you. Also since this is a forum for discussing Oathbringer, what did y'all think of Dalinar's writing? I personally see it as another step towards establishing unity on Roshar. Giving men the aility to read and write helps bridge the social divide between genders, just as allowing women to bear shards does.
  19. I am looking for some feedback on my Surgebinding chart that has been updated for Oathbringer. I am sure many of you saw Connections that I missed. I have included an Excel doc, a PDF doc, and picture for your viewing pleasure. And here we go: Stormlight.pdf Stormlight.xlsx
  20. Has anyone commented on Renarin's extraordinary healing abilities yet? Is this a perk of his Order? Or something to do with his corrupted spren? Maybe he was somehow drawing Voidlight and Stormlight at the same time?
  21. Hello all, So, while the book was massive and I see the point of not having all the interactions between characters on screen, I feel that some parts were underwhelming, as: The talk between Kaladin and Rlain was not showed, and I think they'd be able to learn a lot from each other, specially considering Kaladin was following a group of parshmen just before coming back. Shallan-Kaladin-Adolin interactions - even without all the shipping wars (and I was rooting for Shalladin), how can they just assume things all around? They're teenagers, ok, but still... Azure with everyone: like seriously, you're not wondering who is this person that seems to change appearances, sometimes has different hair color and scars that are bigger or smaller? i know you're used to Shallan and so on, but it can't seem normal, can it? And who also seems to have knowledge of many outside things, and maybe could help in other ways. Shallan also doesn't seem to care that Azure interacts with Adolin more than she does at the boat-spren-thing, I expected some more human reactions of her. Dalinar and Navani's interactions... oh, so now you remember your wife? Maybe let's talk about it? No? Dalinar's Stormfather-sword: they're not going to talk about it? Suddenly everything's fine? Jasnah comes back and her ward just did many crazy things, what's the best course? Put her as a scribe and not let her participate in a discussion full of other radiants? I know her character is smarter than that, it can't be she understands Shallan this little, it was obvious it'd push her away. So many other talks that were just suddenly ignored and never picked back. It feels like the characters just don't talk about problems, they only discuss battle plans (and Dalinar talks to King T., that's it) and politics, ignoring that what makes the KR is being broken. They always seem on the verge of talking, but then just walk away. That's not how life goes, and it felt rather unnatural to me, the other 2 books seemed less bothering in that aspect. The book as one is very good and explained a lot, but I missed some things. What's your opinion on these stuff and others?
  22. For a Shardholder that we believed to have the Shard of Hate, which was taken on by a nasty person to begin with, Odium comes off as surprisingly calm. He sees himself as being the Shard of Passion, and others note that he seems to feed on passion. However, I think that for as long as he has been around and influenced by the Shard, he still seems too in control of himself for either hatred or passion to be his main focus. Instead, I think that he is the Shard of Betrayals. This would explain a lot of things. We find out that Odium is a human god, but he is leading the Listeners/Singers against the humans. The Stormlight Archive starts with nine of the ten Heralds betraying the last one so that they can avoid further torture. All of the humans which Odium or his Fused recruit (or attempt to recruit, in the case of Dalinar) are betraying humanity: Moash, Amaram, and Taravangian all join with Odium not because they believe his side to be the right one, but because they believe his side is the stronger one or because of personal benefits. This sets them apart from Nin and the Skybreakers, who join for reasons of morality, even if that morality has been twisted. If Odium is the Shardholder of Betrayal, he would still be able to make long-term plans, act calmly rather than passionately all the time, and it would explain how he could continue to destroy other Shards since Betrayal is nearly as destructive as Ruin. The only trouble I have with the theory is explaining how he could be held by the Oathpact, but maybe it is as simple as “you cannot betray someone unless they trust you”, and so he has to be able to act in a way to make others trust him in order to fulfill his Shard’s Intent. Thoughts?
  23. One of my favorite parts of Oathbringer is when Kaladin fails to Say the Fourth Ideal. He knows what it is, and how important it could be, but he just can't say it. I think this speaks a lot to him as a character. On the other hand, shamefully I must admit that 90% of the reason why I'm so glad that he fails is because when Dalinar gets his turn to shine it's so much more powerful. This was Dalinar's book, and the focus was on Dalinar's story arc. Other characters definitely had their own time in the sun, but Dalinar was allowed to be the hero of his own story. After reading WoR, one of my larger fears was that every book would just be Kaladin coming in to save the day again, and the climax would be on how he does it this time (there were arguably two major climactic points in WoR, and Kaladin was the hero-focus of both of them). However, even in the brief moments that they had on-screen, Jasnah and Renarin's scenes were emotional and awesome. I'm still waiting for a moving climax scene from Shallan's point of view, and slowly accepting that we may never get one (I was happy to see her using an army of illusions for combat, which I had predicted as a tactic years ago, but the climactic scenes of her lacked...I dunno what, but something)--but I have restored faith that we will get those scenes for more than just Kaladin.
  24. I really hope this goes on the OB spoiler board, I am not that great when it comes to managing threads. Anyway.. We've got some interesting stories in Oathbringer : The girl who looked up, the story about the 3 moons and the one about Nankhet, I feel like I am missing one, but these come to my mind now. The one I wanted to talk about, ever since I read it in Oathbringer is the Nankhet one, about a king in Jah Keved. It's in the beginning of one of Jasnah's chapters. One king that in 3 months has 6 assasinations attempts, mostly from his family or people close to him. He survives all of them and gathers the people who tried to kill him for a feast then kills them one by one, only to die choking with the food and having no one else there to save him. What I am curious to know if anyone has heard of a similar story or has knowledge where the inspiration for this one might have come. I am asking because there is a story in Romanian folklore that has a similar synopsis and outcome : ruler that was having problems with his subjects, invites them to a feast, then burns them and I think he dies as well. I highly doubt there is any posibility of Brandon knowing about this, as it's a very obscure story, not translated in any other language and I don't think he has any knowledge about Romanian literaturre, so I wonder if it's a motive/plot popular in other cultures as well.
  25. I hope this question does not lead to spoilers, but the depiction of Jasnah's eyes on the Oathbringer cover has been bothering me. Why on earth do her eyes appear to be dark brown--especially when she is holding a sprenblade?! Jasnah is said to have violet eyes, and we know that the radiants' eyes glow when they hold a sprenblade (so we cannot blame shadows for obscuring her eye color). Was this just a mistake by the illustrator? If so, has Sanderson addressed this issue?
