  1. So something I've been thinking about for the past week or so since I saw @IlstrawberrySeed post about Mistborn-Ferrings (Half Borns), is how would a Mistborn-Soulbearer work? Would they be able to store their ability to use allomancy in general or only be able to store one allomantic ability at a time? I'm just curious as to how it would work since I've been reading a lot of posts about F-Nicrosil and diving into the cult
  2. I have been reading the Mistborn RPG bace rule book and now I have a few questions on how you use Nicrosil 1. How do you store investiture? In the Mistborn RPG it says that it takes abilities from other metal minds and turns it into pure investiture and stores it. I was wondering if it was canon or not. 2. How do you use the stored investiture? Again in the RPG it says that when you draw from a Nicrosil Metalmind you can use that investigure and put it into any other Metalmind. I am again wondering if this is canon.
  3. I found this WoB and it got me thinking; This question was mostly meant to answer whether regular Bio-Chromatic Breaths were vulnerable to Hemalrugic transfer, but it also hints that Hemalurgy may be able to take Kinetic Investiture, such as that which is being used to fuel Allomancy or Surgebinding. There's a good chance this isn't true (as the WoB is from 2015), but if it is true, I think it could lead to some interesting stuff. I think that if you could take Kinetic Investiture via H-nicrosil you could potentially siphon off an Allomancer's Investiture as they burned a metal (embedding the spike in them and letting it continually strip them of the Investiture as it is drawn from the SR), similar to how Feruchemy can siphon off attributes for later use (could also be used instead of A-chromium to Leech someone). You may be able to implant the spike into someone else (or spike your own Investiture for later use, simply keeping the spike imbedded in yourself and using the proper Intent or Command) to give them access to a ready to use reservoir of power that they could use in leu of metals to burn, kind of like how a Surgebinder has their Stormlight in their body ready to use in the amount they want or how Marasi was able to absorb and direct Unkeyed Dor in the amount that she wanted- no limitations of burn rate involved. This could be another possible hack for augmenting Allomancy, allowing for great bursts of power that can be sustained longer and in a more stable fashion than with A-duralumin.
  4. I read this somewhere in wob where he said that nicrosil can be used to store Devine breath of a returned. Then i started thinking let's say there is a full feruchemist with knowledge of hemalurgy. He can steal the devine breath of a returned through hemalurgy and give himself fifth heightening through hemalurgic spike and then he put that Investiture in his nicrosil metalmind by filling it and then remove the hemalurgic spike and heal himself with gold metalmind. Healing both his physical body as well as his spiritweb. Although the healing of his spiritweb won't be absolute but atleast there won't be a hole in his spiritweb (which cannot be exploited by anyone) that is caused by hemalurgy. If it's possible then why not also steal other ability to use a certain magic and store that in your nicrosil metalmind. This method could give you powers without a big disadvantage of hemalurgy.
  5. I read this quote awhile ago, and it made me think about another use for F-nicrosil. There are two ways to interpret that, from what I can tell; either a Feruchemist with a weakened power "leaks" some small extra amount of attribute when they store, meaning that their Metalminds get filled with slightly less Investiture than what the Feruchemist gave up. So, for example, a Feruchemist who spent 60 minutes storing 20% of their strength in a Pewtermind would only really have 59-58 minutes worth of attribute stored in the Metalmind if they were somehow to tap it with perfect efficiency. A Feruchemist who gained their powers via Hemalurgy would be even worse- their power is weakened. However, the second interpretation interests me more; what if the attribute in the Metalmind is equal to what the Feruchemist stored, but when the Feruchemist taps that attribute it is simply less efficient; they may store 60 minutes worth of attribute, but when they tap it they lose some due to entropy. If you want to know whether this is actually possible via Cosmere rules, look no further than the SA. SA spoilers, in case you somehow weren't aware If the second interpretation holds true, then a Full Feruchemist (or anybody who had F-nicrosil and another Feruchemical power through some means) who stored their ability to use their other powers might be able to tap at much higher rates and suffer significantly less loss of Investiture due to attribute compression. They could store their ability to use their powers when not actively tapping or storing those powers, which would be pretty easy in comparison to the other attributes such as strength, health, or speed. Maybe this wouldn't be as crazy as Compounding, but I think that it could have some serious potential.
  6. So we sort of get how Nicro-boosting works on a lot of metals. Pewter, you get super strong, steel you launch everything into the abyss, iron and tin, you just die, and so on. What of the weirder ones? Obviously aluminum and duralumin wouldn’t have too much affect, and chromium and nicrosil would be similar, but what of the forbidden four? The temporal metals? For cadmium, I could see something like instantaneous time travel into the future. Bendalloy—doing a thousand things in the span of half a second? Gold and Electrum is where things get really weird, as they’re weird metals in general. Would they be like Atium, where they just poke a hole in the spirit realm and wild things happen? Atium was predicated on Fortune, and getting a blast of the future, so would Electrum be similar? I suppose given that “Atium” was an electrum alloy, that would make sense. So that just leaves gold. Gold is a weird Allomantic metal, so I have no idea what happens with that one. It doesn’t really tap into fortune, but messes with the Spiritual Realm somehow. I don’t know. Ideas, anyone?
  7. Okay, we don't know for certain yet that someone could use nicrosil Feruchemy to temporarily augment their Allomancy (storing and then tapping their ability to use their Allomantic power at an accelerated rate), but for the sake of this conversation, let's say that it can be done and that Compounding can be used to increase its effectiveness. I think that there would be a greater physical limitation on nicrosil-empowerment than would be with naturally more powerful Allomancy. In order to make it work, you'd store your ability to use one of your Allomantic powers inside a Nicrosilmind, then you would tap it faster than normal at a later time (say, at 500%). First off, you'd face the limitation of whether or not a feedback loop was possible or not. If you tap your Nicrosilmind to increase the power of your Allomantic Nicrosil, thus letting you draw more Investiture from the SR when you Compound, thus letting you store that power inside your Metalmind, which you then tap to increase the power of your Allomancy, etc. I kind of doubt this would work; if it did, you could more or less constantly increase your Allomantic power to ridiculous levels. I think that, more likely, if you tried this method you'd get a net loss of power; more Investiture would be drawn from your Feruchemy to enhance your Allomancy than what your new Compounding-level drew from the SR. That way, your base Allomantic strength still matters, and you can't stay at a greatly enhanced level of Allomantic power constantly. And it's a good thing that this would be a limitation of nicrosil Compounding, since it makes the power more balanced. Second limitation: Metalmind size. For example, if you tried to make yourself into a Thug that had fifty times the raw Allomantic power of a normal Thug, you'd have a problem; you can only cram so much Investiture into Nicrosilminds of a usable size. I think that this is also good, because you wouldn't see a Nicrosil Compounder having Lord Ruler level strength on a consistent basis. TLDR, if Nicrosil Compounding does work, you'd have two limiting factors; base Allomantic strength and Metalmind size. And that's a good thing, because it makes the power more balanced, and actually possible to make cannon because it doesn't break the game, so to speak.
  8. I've been having a look at the Twinborn Names, from the mostly non-canon Mistborn RPG thing that Idon't know much about and I saw a particular combo that caught my eye. The Sapper, the Twinborn of A-Chromium and F-Nicrosil. The little description next to it says that a Sapper 'Steals and hoards the powers of others'. I know, I know, stuff from the RPG isn't really canon and shouldn't be taken too seriously unless Brandon says something about it, but I've been wondering about the feasability of this pairing nd wondering whether it would actually do as described. A-Chromium enables a person to 'Leech' away Kinetic Investiture, such as Allomantic Metals, Stormlight, Breaths, etc. F-Nicrosil enables a person to store 'Innate Invesititure', the powers not the fuel, into Nicrosiminds. At first glance from this couldn't work as described, A-Chromium wouldn't enable the taking of powers, just the Fuel. F-Nicrosil can't (From what little we know) store the Fuel like Stormlight. Also when a Leecher leeches the Fuel it simply disappears into the Ether. But perhaps either Savantism or a Resonance, probably both, can make this work. Though there is no actual evidence as to what the effects of Leecher-Savantism is nor what the Resonance for this combination of powers could be, there isn't exactly any proof against it either, though that isn't exactly how the scientific method works unfortunately. Any ideas? Or is this simply impossible and I'm just rambling on about non-canonical nonsense?
  9. In both Feruchemy and Hemalurgy, nicrosil stores Investiture. Yet, I don’t think they function the same, even accounting for different Hemalurgic spikes used on Allomancy and Feruchemy. In particular, Hemalurgy distinguishes between “powers” and “investiture”: both Atium and aluminum mention it Pagerunner The Hemalurgy table, you wrote down "atium steals any power, lerasium is all abilities, nicrosil is Investiture"; what's the difference between those three? Hemalurgic atium, lerasium, and nicrosil. What's powers, abilities, and Investiture? Brandon Sanderson People are Invested in ways that do not give them active powers. So for instance, everyone on Nalthis is Invested. Everyone in the cosmere is, really. You want to steal their Investiture, but they don't have a power. You're still ripping off a piece of their soul. So there is a distinction between the actual Investiture that's in a human being and a specific power that they have. So that distinction is pretty easy. You can also, with Hemalurgy, steal specific things. You can steal just general Investiture. You can steal, if you want--this is where the kandra Blessings come from. You can instead steal specific things that are not like stealing Allomancy. Stealing, for instance, someone's mental acuity. Pagerunner So abilities is like the half that's all the strength, speed, all that kind of stuff? Those are abilities, versus the Metallic Arts are all powers? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Pagerunner Then Investiture, is that offworld magics? Brandon Sanderson No, no, it's the raw power. Pagerunner Nicrosil is their soul? Brandon Sanderson Yes. A piece of their soul, essentially. Pagerunner So how would you go about stealing an offworld power? Brandon Sanderson It's going to depend. A Breath, you would steal with nicrosil. It's general Investiture, is what you would probably going call that. You could forcibly remove someone's Breath from them. The ability to be a Sand Master you would steal with the power ability. JordanCon 2021 (July 16, 2021) The impression I got was that for off world magics, nicrosil would take end neutral magics (you need Investiture from yourself) and end positive would be Atium. Hence why you need to steal Breath with the former and Sand Mastery with the latter. Yet, we know Nicrosil stores both Allomancy and Feruchemy. On top of that, nicrosil metalminds should be able to store Surgebinding kingbirdy (paraphrased) Could Feruchemical nicrosil be used to store other Invested abilities, such as a Returned Breath or the abilities of the Knights Radiant? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes, that's possible. DragonCon 2016 (Sept. 4, 2016) So my question is this: does Feruchemy just lack that distinction altogether? I assume so. Hemalurgy is a different system and it makes sense that it might function differently. In that case, you should be able to store Sand Mastery in nicrosil, but not use spikes that way. You could also argue that Atium, as a true wild card, can also steal Investiture. However, that makes aluminum Hemalurgy a bit weird since it removes (not steals) all powers. If all Invesiture were included in aluminum, that implies that it affects the very soul and likely destroys it Nightblood style. Anyway, what do you guys think? Am I missing something here? Let me know your thoughts.
  10. Ok, so I haven't read stormlight or know much about investiture, all I know is that it's just what the magic systems are made of. So I'm confused, what does it mean to even drain or store investiture?
  11. If a Kandra managed to get a large enough skeleton made of nicrosil and then used compounding to fill it enough to create a perpendicularity, what side effects would there be for the Kandra constantly toting around a perpendicularity?
  12. I was thinking again about combining magic systems when a finally thought to combine Feruchemical Nicrosil with Forgery (for a second time). If a Soulbearer Ferring could store the investiture held within a Forgery stamp, they could do at least two new really cool things. One, while Forgery is normally restricted to a small portion of one specific planet, tapping the investiture of a Soulstamp would likely allow you to gain the effects of said Soulstamp any time, any place, which would be nice, especially for a Worldhopper. The second purpose seems even more powerful though. Assuming that one could store the investiture of a Soulstamp that was not likely to take or that simply required too much Investiture to be normally feasible, such as turning a normal Scadrian into an Allomancer or Feruchemist, you could tap the Nicrosilmind at a quick rate to fuel the effects of the stamp with more Investiture than normally would be granted by regular Soulforgery, which should allow you to benefit from Soulstamps that normally wouldn't take or that wouldn't have enough fuel to function. And if you really wanted to make things interesting, you might be able to manufacture Hemalurgic spikes from such a combination of powers. So anyway, does anyone else have any ideas on how Feruchemical Nicrosil and Soulforgery might be able to be combine to achieve certain effects?
  13. If a Nicroburst Misting were to burn their metal while trying to fill a Hemalurgic spike, would they be able to enhance the process of charging the spike? Perhaps the spike would be charged more efficiently, taking more total Investiture from the target?
  14. One of the common conceptions I've seen on compounding nicrosil is that you can do this in order to increase the power of one your abilities temporarily. Compound, for example, your ability to use steel Allomancy, tap it at a quick rate, and your ability to use that specific power will be increased. I'm not sure this is how it works anymore though. From this quote we see that a Nicrosilmind is similar a a Coppermind in some regards, and I think that one of the ways that it may be is that you store not only your ability to use a type of Invested power with it, but also the relative strength of that power too. For example, if a Mistborn such as Kelsier were to store his ability to use Allomantic steel, it would be more powerful than if Waxillium were to store his ability to use Allomantic steel. This may not be the case, of course, but I think that it would be a reasonable line of thinking based on the WoB and that fact that it would help keep nicrosil from becoming too overpowered.
  15. Anyone know what happens if you are burning Duralumin while also attempting to burn a stored Feruchemical attribute? I've been wondering about this since we see Connection Medallions and I'm wondering if they're filling them in a special way, or if this isn't as complicated as I think it is. In order to compound you first store a Feruchemical attribute in the Metalmind, slightly burn the Metalmind, which allows you to access the Feruchemical storage as an Allomantic ability, and then burn the Feruchemical storage granting a huge amount of that storage in return. By necessity to make the compounding work, you have to actively, if minutely, burn the Metalmind. Duralumin removes all control over how little you burn, instead expending all actively burning metals in a burst of power beyond what most Allomancers can do even when flaring their metals. The entire stock, which presumably includes the Metalmind. Maybe it isn't a problem, since A-Duralumin itself I think burns at a normal rate, but does A-Duralumin's effect apply to F-Duralumin? Do you get huge bursts of Connection and then you immediately extinguish A-Duralumin and then store or lose it? That probably wouldn't be a problem, except you have no finesse when you need to recharge (and who knows what happens when you repeatedly massively Connect yourself to... whatever). I know that Leechers can't affect Feruchemical stores normally, but I'm wondering if the "hack" that is Compounding opens Feruchemical stores to influence from Leechers, or if that would only would work when actively Compounding. At any rate, I don't think it would be viable to Compound Duralumin and another metal at the same time.

A different look at this, could a Nicroburst Misting have slapped Miles, waited a second, and then shot him? Would that have burned all of his Metalminds, Health storage and all since Miles always had the compounding running and by extension was very slowly burning his Gold?
  17. Hemalurgy fascinates me, mostly because of the idea that you can use it to create all kinds of crazy things, but the weaknesses tacked on to having too may spikes means that realistically, you'd probably only want a few. The coppermind says that a nicrosil spike will steal general investiture, like bio-chromatic breaths, not actual powers, like allomancy or surgebinding. My question is, what benefit is there to this? Would it act like just getting a bunch of breaths that you can't awaken with? or would it do something different?
  18. I've been having lots of fun translating Navani's notebook recently. Most of it is just flavor, but I do think I have found at least one important thing hidden here. Check out this page about Raboniel's Soul-Harvesting Dagger... I suspect this "silver-nickel" alloy is actually nicrosil, which is really a chromium-nickel alloy, and that Raboniel is lying here to throw Navani off the trail. She says on this very page that Navani is right not to trust her. Nicrosil has the feruchemical property of storing investiture. I find it hard to believe that the housing of the gemstone is unrelated to the function of the dagger (all fabrials are housed in a meaningful metal cage, afterall). So what are the chances that this is not nicrosil? 12/9 update: Got a RAFO about this from Brandon. Very interesting.
  19. Hello hello fellow wordlhoppers, after some thought I want to return to my favourite cosmere idea: Compounding with something else but Allomancy. The most likely candidate: AonDor. (Mistborn spoilers) Part 1: What is Compounding? and how could it work with anything else but Allomancy. Allomancy uses Metals as Keys to tell Preservation's Investiture flowing through them from the Spiritual Realm what form/effect to take. Iron tells it to pull, Steel to push etc. Feruchemy uses Metals as Keys to tell the (scadrian) body's own Investiture what form/effect to save as. A Compounder genetically has both the abilities to tap and save the same metal. If they activate a key (burn a metal) that is already a different key (already tells Investiture a specific form to take) the Investiture that the allomancer uses for allomancy (Preservation's) instead takes the form that the feruchemic key tells them. Part 2.1: AonDor with Compounding broken down like that, you might get where I'm going. What other kind of magic uses Keys: Selish magic. Specifically, AonDor. In AonDor, the Aon acts as a Key to tell the Dor (Dominion and Devotion's combined Investiture) what form/effect to take. Aon Ehe tells it to be Fire, Aon Shao tells it to transform something, etc. These Aons can be modified to be Keys for extremely specific purposes. Part 2.2: AonDor Compounding: Aon Deo Aon Deo is the Aon for Metal. My theory: I believe Aon Deo could be specified enough that, if an AonDor user made a metalmind in the shape of that specific Aon or inscribed Aon Deo into a Metalmind, you could channel the Dor through the Metalmind, using the Dor to power your feruchemical release similarly to how Allomantic Compounding uses Perservation's Investiture. What are the Implications of this: 1. If a person had both the ability to use a Metalmind and use AonDor, they could get massive amounts of certain feruchemical attributes without saving them beforehand by using Aon Deo to power them with Dor. Part 2.3: Nicrosil Source: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Nicrosil What are the implications of this: 2. An AonDor Nicrosil Compounder could store a tiny bit of Investiture in his AonDeo Nicrosilmind, then activate it with AonDor and get basically infinite Investiture. 3. THEY WOULDN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE A FERUCHEMIST. Originally, I thought that if a Terrisperson managed to move to Arelon they might have a tiny chance to birth a Ferring who gets chosed by the Sheod. But read this again: Therefore, a Soulbearer could store their ability to use Feruchemy and another person tapping it would be turned into a temporary Feruchemist who has the ability to fill a metalmind (assuming the nicrosilmind was unsealed) If an Elantrian got their hands on an unkeyed Nicrosilmind, that temporary window would be enough to use AonDor to power it. Once the AonDeo Nicrosilmind is Compounding, it wouldn't be used up like in Allomantic Compounding. The Elantrian would have infinite Investiture. For Rosharans, this might seem arbitrary, but not for Elantrians. The Dor has local borders, it is difficult to use AonDor outside of Arelon, not even speaking of Sel. Using this Technique, Elantrians might be able to use AonDor outside of Sel. Part 3: possible difficulties with Connection Leaving Arelon might weaken the Connection to the land too much to use AonDor even with a source of Investiture. Possible Solution: Source; https://coppermind.net/wiki/Duralumin Elantrians could canonically tap Duralumin to use AonDor outside of Arelon, maybe even Sel. They don't even need to be a Ferring to do this. Anyone can canonically use a Nicrosilmind to temporarily become a Duralumin Ferring (see Bands of Mourning), I theorize that an Elantrian could use AonDor to Compound, turning the temporary abilities provided by a Nicrosil- and Duraluminmind into permanent abilities. This way, they could use AonDor without the Dor while also using the infinite Investiture provided by this trick to power their Duraluminmind to keep up their connection to Sel. > Be Elantrian > Aquire Nicrosilmind and Duraluminmind. > Tap Nicrosilmind while in Arelon. Become temporary Ferring. > Tap Duruminmind while in Arelon by activating your AonDor. Create infinite Investiture loop. > Permanently have infinite Investiture to power both your AonDor and the necessary Connection supplement to power it outside of Sel. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this theory and why you think it could or couldn't work!
  20. After reading a series of Wob's on Enhancement Metals, I was curious about their role at Feruchemy. Here: zas678 If you burn nicrosil, will it deplete Feruchemial storages? Or just Allomantic? Brandon Sanderson Just Allomantic. /r/Fantasy_Bookclub Alloy of Law Q&A (Jan. 17, 2012) - Kaymyth I asked the question about chromium vs a Compounder with both Invested and un-Invested metals in both their stomach and piercings. Brandon Sanderson What it boils down to is this: 1) Yes, the piercings will get burned off. 2) The non-Invested metals go before the Invested ones. He said that because Invested metals are harder to affect, it takes a little extra time and effort to get them to burn off. So a Leecher trying to clean out a Compounder would have to get a good grip and hang on for a few seconds. 3) Chromium burns about as quickly as duralumin, so if you're trying to burn off a lot of metals, it is possible to run out of chromium before your target is clean. This would probably only be an issue when dealing with larger pieces (like jewelry) rather than your standard metal-flakes-in-the-stomach deal. ConQuest 46 (May 22, 2015) - Questioner Could a Leecher take away stores in a metalmind? Brandon Sanderson You’ll have to find out. That’s a RAFO. Calamity Seattle signing (Feb. 17, 2016) - Questioner What happens if you burn duralumin while Compounding? Brandon Sanderson Duralumin while Compounding. So, what duralumin does is it burns out of all of your metal in one burst. So it doesn't necessarily gain you power, it makes it all happen at the same time. The same thing would happen. Questioner Could you turn into a baby? Brandon Sanderson Oh, you could totally turn into a baby. That is within the power of using that, doing <health wrong>, yeah you could totally... You'd be really dangerous. Questioner But it wouldn't really do much? Brandon Sanderson Oh it would have explosive... it does things really fast. That's what it does. Yes you could achieve very powerful sudden effects through that. It'd be scary. Controlling it can be dangerous, regardless of which metal you use. Arcanum Unbounded Seattle signing (Dec. 1, 2016) - In the first question he answers that Nicrosil does not affect metalminds, which may indicate that the same is true for other metals. But in the second he replies that with Compouding the uninvested metals go before the Invested ones in the case of Chromium, in the third he presents a RAFO, and in the fourth he talks about the effect of Duralumin in the Compouding process. I first wondered if he changed his mind, but then I started a theory. I believe that normal metalminds are not affected by these metals, not even Aluminum, because Feruchemists do not burn metals after all. But, if you are a Double Twinborn (or somehow have the power to burn the same type of metal as the invested metals that is in your body), it becomes possible to affect even metalminds. Basically forcing your body (or someone else's body to do the Compouding process). Then Aluminum would have all of its metalminds burned, Duralumin would use them in a single burst, and its external equivalents would allow it to mess with someone else's Compouding process. What do you think, guys?
  21. Can you Duralumin burst aluminium? I mean it would be difficult as the aluminium would probably be looking to metabolize the duralumin anyway but can you even duralumin burst aluminium in the first place? What about Nicroburst touching an Allomancer, Mistborn or Misting, burning aluminum? Can you use chromium to leech someone's aluminium?
  22. The Scadrians know that you can become a ghost. They have a god's word for it. Kelsier did it. That opens up a question. We have only the foreword, not the whole Historica. How precise has Sazeth been? Is it a matter of public record that Kelsier took a bath in liquid Investure? Kelsier's survival is a central feature of Scadrian culture. People have been thinking about it for centuries. It would strike me as extremely odd if nobody had ever tried to recreate the feat or communicate with somebody trying to do so or the recently dead. That raises another question. How detailed have Spook's written records been? Has he talked about speaking to Kelsier after spiking himself? So what could you do to talk to the dead? If Spook's example is known, an obvious option would be to spike yourself multiple times. How many Pathian ear rings can you get into one person? Two dozen? Secondly if you need Investiture in huge amounts, how could you do that? Imagine a Nicrosil Twinborn. Suppose you are one and feel death approaching. You have prepared. You have spent a few weeks compounding. And now you take all your metalminds and ask your Nicroburst friend to give it to you just as you expire. What will happen?
  23. It just occurred to me that Nicrosil ferrings have the potential to become absurdly strong with the advent of Medallions and Unkeyed/Unsealed metalminds. If you can give a metalborn a Medallion for F-Aluminum and F-Nicrosil, they can store their ability to use their metalborn powers inside unkeyed Nicrosil, which a Nicrosil ferring can then tap and use for themselves. (Note that this would be more like an Unkeyed Coppermind, able to transfer distinct powers rather than "ability to burn/tap X metal for Y amount of seconds at Z level of potency" like most Feruchemical reserves) So I don't think this could lead to Nicrosil Ferrings becoming Fullborns with enough cooperative metalborn buddies, but they could certainly become a Nicrosil Compounder which is terrifying enough, and could probably gather up about 16 TOTAL metalborn powers without killing anyone Hemalurgically. They would just have to pick and choose which 16 they want out of the 32 or so total metalborn powers available. They could become a compounder of 8 metals, which... Yep, that's terrifying, or they could pick a few metals that don't overlap (for some reason or another) and have less than 8 compounded metals. I'm also sorry if this has been blatantly obvious to anyone else so far, I tend to do that sort of thing.
  24. Because a pandemic of some sort has left me unoccupied recently, I'm writing up this highly speculative theory about the creation of medallions. Long text is long, so there is a point you can skip to if you don't care about the justification behind some of the spectulation. This topic has seen a lot of research, the most reasonable being, in my opinion, Calderis' theory: One thing that makes me doubt this is the method employed by the Southerners is that Allik speaks about multiple power medallions as if they are an accumulative work: There is much we don't know about the topic, and it seems Brandon won't tell us much until he finally unveils the answer in TLM, so we have to make due with what he have. What I propose is one way a medallion could be made, which is most likely not the way they currently make them. I will work on the assumption that this WoB is correct: Which coincidentally allows me to speak about something that doesn't feel right about Calderis' theory: it is straightforward. Yet there have been multiple ocassions where Brandon has been asked about the creation of medallions, and his reply is, like in this instance, that he would have to check his notes, or ask Peter, and the answer apparently needs a flowchart: That being said, this is what I got. I address the fact that the nicrosil portion is never tapped, and the fact that no hemalurgy should be required if Brandon was not mistaken in the first WoB. As a summary, the idea relies on priming cubes to accumulate multiple powers into a single nicrosil storage, and then to use priming machinery like the one on BoM's airship to create the auto-tapping nicrosil ring. There are multiple points I can't explain, but I think there is some merit to this thought process, and perhaps someone else will be able to build something stronger from this theory. Let's begin with small assumptions, namely about the way priming cubes behave under the effects of Allomancy and Feruchemy. We have seen priming cubes used with A-Steel, A-Cadmium and A-Chromium. In all cases the observed effect is that the output of the allomancer's burn is reproduced by the cube, with some harmonium burned away, as if the cube was metal burning inside the allomancer. From Irich's PoV we know there is a method of operation that allows some mechanism to be primed so that it makes something else ligher, and the priming involves a ferring: I believe it would be consistent to expect that storing into an iron metalmind while holding the primer cube would cause it to work as if it was iron being stored into by a feruchemist. This would have the effect of funneling weight from nearby people, though apparently it can be worked to funnel weight from its environment as well (airship becoming lighter). Of course we don't really know how the ship gets lighter, and it would be a valid criticism of this text. It would be somewhat reasonable that the cube could funnel feruchemical attributes from people, as it could be doing so by preventing investiture from flowing from the Spiritual Realm to the Physical making the attribute stop being manifested (i.e. weight being removed), the excess being stored in the ettmetal as any other feruchemical store or getting shunted back to the SR. But what would it mean to prime the cube by tapping an attribute? In particular, the important question is what effect should that have on inanimate objects. When the cube replicates allomancy, it gets burned, presumably to fuel the allomancy. When it draws attributes, it is just behaving as a metalmind, storing a charge, (though I don't think the charge would actually be stored, it just gets siphoned into oblivion, like some people think happens when you store into aluminum). If it were primed by tapping a charge, the cube would have to provide the excess investiture like it does with allomancy. This is problematic, as either you would need to store before being able to tap, or the investiture that makes up the ettmetal would have to fuel the effect. I don't think it makes sense for the ettmetal to fuel the feruchemy by decreasing its investiture level (i.e. desaturating itself) or something like that. If the ettmetal fuels the feruchemical output, I think it would have to work like it does with allomancy, burning itself to provide the effect, as if it was a metalmind being compounded. These are the assumptions I am working on, and I concede they are wildly speculative, but under these premises this is how I envision the origin of the Bands of Mourning: IF LAZY, SKIP HERE! We will require a ferring and misting of each type along with some strategic twinborns, some ettmetal, and no spiky things. Arbitrary Unkeyed Metalminds. The first step is to be able to produce an unkeyed metalmind. An aluminum ferring stores Identity while holding a primer cube. The cube responds by drawing Identity from anyone close by. Any feruchemical charge stored while the cube is working will be clear of Identity, free to be used by any ferring of that metal. Adding Powers to Nicrosil. The second step is to create an unkeyed nicrosil metalmind, with a storage of F-Nicrosil. This can be done by a nicrosil ferring storing their ability under the influence of the Identity-clearing grenade. The resulting metalmind allows any twinborn with access to A-Nicrosil to store their feruchemical ability into a nicrosil metalmind, which can easily be cleared of Identity with the same procedure. The twinborn burns the nicrosil metalmind, compounding the charge that gives them access to F-Nicrosil, allowing them to store their feruchemical power into a nicrosil metalmind. Notice that at this point we can create a sealed version of the Bands of Mourning that can only be used by nicrosil metalborn: To add an Allomantic power, we need a twinborn with that power and F-Nicrosil. The individual stores their allomantic ability while being identity-cleared, resulting in a net power addition to the master nicrosil metalmind. To add a Feruchemical power, we need a twinborn with that power and A-Nicrosil. The individual burns an unkeyed nicrosil metalmind that has been filled with the ability to use F-Nicrosil. During the burn, the charge gets compounded and the twinborn becomes a nicrosil ferring for the duration of the burn, allowing them to store their feruchemical ability into the master nicrosil metalmind. The limit to the amount of powers that can be added is the availability of suitable twinborn and ettmetal. If this was no issue, once all allomantic and feruchemical powers had been stored, the master nicrosil metalmind could be burned by a A-Nicrosil misting while priming the cube producing a Fullborn grenade, though it's effects would by necessity be temporary: A powerless person could perhaps store all powers while under the effects of the grenade, but once its effects decayed they would no longer have access to F-nicrosil. So this method of granting powers is short-lived, and can only be initiated by a nicrosil ferring, and does not qualify as a mechanical mean of accessing Invested Arts like medallions or honorblades do. The next section provides even more outrageous speculation in order to provide a solution to this problem From the excerp I quoted from BoM, it would seem an airship can be primed into being made lighter. While there is a perhaps deceivingly obvious implication, there are a couple extra details that we can infer from this fact. Objects, not only people, can store feruchemical atributes, or at the very least they can see their flow of investiture altered in such a way that the physical manifestation of those attributes are dimishised. The duration of the decrease in the attribute needn't be the same as the duration of the priming. Otherwise the ship would not be viable, because you would need to prime its weight for as long as the expected duration of the flight, which at any reasonable pace would take hours if not days. Ultimately, this weight-changing airship implies that a being without innate feruchemical powers can be forced to store an attribute. This strikes suspiciously close to giving a person a power they don't have! Sadly I can't see any additional info about the weight changing mechanism to explain it's inner workings. From Irich's chapter the ship appears to have a lattice of some lightweight metal couple with some other set of metal wires, plus a golden plate in the shape of a ship. I do believe these are somehow trying to reinforce the cognitive aspect of the ship, somehow making it more aware. In fact I think the pattern of metals going all over the ship is very similar to the lines of strata on the walls of Urithiru, with the gemstone pilar being replaced by a golden plate. In any case, I don't have any additional ideas on this. Therefore, I will assume that the weight changing machinery can be primed by storing an attribute while holding a priming cube, with some unknown extra steps. So if storing weight causes the cube to expand the effect, forcing its surroundings to store weight, what would tapping imply for other feruchemical uses? This is where the amount of unknowns is too big to form a coherent argument with supporting evidence, and so at this point everything is unsupported and likely invalid. I assume that priming the airship works because something in the weight changing machinery defines the airship as the target, and because the ship is in contact with a decent amount of iron it can store its weight into the iron. Perhaps that same machinery could be made to target a ring of nicrosil filled with an unkeyed charge of F-Nicrosil. If you were to store your ability to use your allomantic/feruchemical power while priming the cube -which is set to target the ring and only the ring- the piece of nicrosil would try to store its investiture into its environment. Now, I accept that this is wishful thinking, but maybe this ring would not be able to store anything because there is no amount of nicrosil metal nearby. The physical/spiritual makeup of the nicrosil is what allows it to be a recipient of that specific kind of charge: of Innate Investiture, the ability to use allomancy/feruchemy. Just like only iron has a structure such that it can hold a charge of weight. But nicrosil is not the only suitable recipient of Innate Investiture that grants access to Metallic Arts: people can hold a lot of the stuff. So, a nicrosil ring is looking for a suitable recipient, its charge having no way out but is under pressure to escape because it has been primed to do so by the effect of the ettmetal. A person touches this nicrosil ring, the charge finds an outlet it can flow into, and the person receives the ability to use allomancy/feruchemy as it was originally stored into the ring. This is the reason we never see anyone tap the nicrosil portion of the medallions: the nicrosil is not working as a metalmind, it is working as an entity with access to f-nicrosil, and the wearer is the metalmind being stored into. Of course this doesn't fully work, as it doesn't explain why there is an apparent limit of three powers to a medallion. I cannot explain the fact that the nicrosil ring never runs out, or that the charge is 'given back' to the medallion once the user stops touching it. I don't believe this is how the Southerners are actually making the medallions, as I believe they do use hemalurgy, which could explain both the three power limit (see Calderis' theory) and the nicrosil charge being 'discrete' like memories in a coppermind. Perhaps replacing the steps that involve storing F-Nicrosil with stealing (Excising ) f-nicrosil would give rise to the medallions we know and love. I do want to add some thoughts about the three power limit: could it be that this is a Cosmere-wide limit to the number of abilities granted by the same mechanical method? Medallions are limited to three powers, as Allik tells us: It doesn't mean there is a hard limit on the number of powers, as it could simply be that the tech level is not quite there but could be reached. If we do operate on the assumption that it is a hard limit, where else have we seen anecdotal recalling of three powers being granted, at most? There is this from Sixth of the Dusk: Same situation, we have an observer telling us about a grand maximum of three powers, but no explicit mention that more is impossible. Finally, there is this from Kaza's Interlude in Oathbringer: Which implies Fabrial Soulcasters have three modes of operation, whatever they might be. The most obvious inference is that each 'mode' is one essence, corresponding to each of the three gemstones each Soulcaster can hold. I believe these quotes add credence towars a Cosmere hard limit of three powers given by the same mechanical means. Of course more than three can be achieved through different systems (three powers from medallions and three from hemalurgy, as we know it can be done as we see Suit use a medallion while having three spikes) or through hacks (granting a single power, that of F-Nicrosil, that allows access to a unkeyed storage of any arbitrary set of powers). But this system-specific limit is reasonable even without an in-world reason, as it would prevent scenarios in Era 4 where everyone can be a Fullborn Radiant of ten surges. Though I acknowledge a major flaw: there are WoBs that mention you could bond 5 Honorblades, but this should not be feasible if this limit exists.
  25. So you can store investiture in nicrosil right. So how does that work. 1). Does it only store the ability to use other magic systems ? Like suppose I'm a twinborn and I store the ability to burn steel in an unsealed metalminds ,while not burning the metal. So when someone else taps it , do they temororarily gain the ability to burn metal but have to actually metabolize metal to use it ? 2). Suppose I burn steel but instead of using the energy to push on steel , I store it inside the metalmind. Then when someone else taps it , would they gain the ability to push without actually burning the metal. Or do both methods work ? Also suppose I'm compounding. So if I store 1 Newton of steel pushing in the metalmind and I burn it, do I get access to 10 Newtons of pushing ?
