  1. A rehash of a novel I tried to write earlier this year. Constructive criticism cherished and coveted. Full doc Individual chapter docs to come
  2. Thanks to the efforts of @InfiniteInsanity, I am attempting NaNoWriMo this year. I'm going to post the chapters as I write them, or at least as makes sense according to my schedule. I'm writing a fantasy novel (with a little bit of sci fi) that's based on an idea InfiniteInsanity helped me come up with. I've added a lot to it, and thrown together a rough outline, so that I may actually be able to finish a story this time, rather than what I usually do, which is just creating some cool worldbuilding without a real story to go with it. Normally, I'd give a long explanatory rant, but this time, I'm throwing you in so you can see what you think. You'll learn as you read. To start: The Prologue. I realized as I was writing this that I made it way too long. I put a whole lot of unnecessary stuff in here, so I'm going to edit it and trim it down later. (There will most likely be a rigorous editing process for the entire story, honestly. But that's once I'm finished.) So please keep in mind that I am currently unsatisfied with this prologue, and most of it is subject to change in the future. Even so, here it is.
  3. We've got some new Mini-Con news this week! Also, Brandon and some employees at Dragonsteel Entertainment will be participating in NaNoWriMo this year, and sharing their word counts multiple times a week, along with encouraging others to do the same. First, though: prewriting on Defiant is finished! This means he can start (and has started) the actual writing of the novel, which brings us to the first major piece of news. In case you haven't heard of it, National Novel Writing Month, more commonly known as NaNoWriMo, is a nonprofit organization that is most known for its eponymous annual program, encouraging authors to write a 50k word manuscript during the month of November. This year, it just so happened that the start of Defiant's writing was close to lining up with the start of the month, and so Brandon intentionally planned things out so he can participate. Around four times a week, he plans to post his wordcount for the day to r/Sanderson, with the goal of hitting as close to exactly 50k as possible, allowing him to provide an example of a constant pace to finish, as well as to encourage discussion in the comments between other writers who are attempting it. Additionally, various other members of Team Dragonsteel will be participating in this "SandoWriMo" and posting their word counts, such as Isaac (his art director), Janci Patterson (co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas), Adam (his head of publicity), Kathy (his sister-in-law and head of facilities), and Kellyn (an employee at the Dragonsteel Store). (Their usernames can be found in today's check-in post.) In other news, an updated guest list for the Dragonsteel Mini-Con has been released. Currently, the site includes (spoiler box for length): While the full event schedule is not out yet, they also announced Howard Lyon will be running a live painting session, along with Steve Argyle and Hayley Lazo. Audience participation is encouraged. The event will be at 7PM on the 22nd, in L2 Ballroom A. In a final bit of Mini-Con news, the badges have been revealed, and are by Jian Guo, cover artist of the Chinese editions: Beyond that, in order to celebrate the release of Cytonic, several new T-Shirt designs are available from the Dragonsteel store: Larger images and purchase links (hidden for length again): That's all for this week! As per usual, Brandon's Weekly Update video is on YouTube, as is this week's episode of Intentionally Blank.
  4. It's almost that time again! It's that special time when writers across the globe come together to feel inadequate compared to Brandon Sanderson. Can you write in a month what Brandon writes in an afternoon? (I'm exaggerating, but not a lot. The goal is 50,000 words in the month of November, which Brandon has been known to exceed in the first two weeks.) Is anyone else going for it this year? Here's a thread to discuss preparation, offer encouragement, and share your daily progress (when November starts).
  5. I put this topic here even though this case specifically relates to the Stormlight Archive. Feel free to move, mods, if I've been a massive dork. Okay. So. As you may or may not know, while I go by Slowswift here on the Shard, I tend towards TheOtherKholin everywhere else. At first, it was just a name: the Kholins are pretty cool people (with maybe a couple of exceptions); who wouldn’t want to be associated with them? But, for the sake of a proper beginning, we’ll say it’s a reference to (WoK Prime spoilers) But then I got thinking. What if there were actually other Kholins? And so I wrote this, after taking a look at my NaNoWriMo page and deciding that I needed to freshen up my author bio there. This is still an early draft. I'm coming here to the Shard for help because I want this to be more than some half-cremmed backstory for a bad OC, though I don't plan on writing any fanfic with this (yet). Also, I've left the [name] brackets in because I have yet to make a final decision on his name, though I do have some ideas. So, if y'all have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
  6. Welcome to the thread! If you're just here for the stories, just skip on down to the spoiler tags; they're compressing things so that I can fit updates into the first post as well as posting them below, without interrupting potential discussion. I'm trying NaNoWriMo this year; while I played with it previously I never made a serious attempt, and the one novel I have finished took me upwards of five years for a measly 60,000 words - not because I can't write quickly, but because (among other reasons) I was learning. So here begins my first real attempt at writing a novel in 30 days, begun at the stroke of midnight on November 1st. Myth Taken, aka The Story So Far (does not count towards NaNoWriMo): And the first writing for NaNoWriMo is an aside story in the same setting. The Primals are likely to get very little direct exposure and this struck me tonight during my shift, so I had to get on with it: Interlude: A Fable November 1st. Words: 1000 on the dot. Remaining for Day: 667. There will be another update after work tomorrow, but pretty good start for the first hour of NaNoWriMo. Chapter 1 - November 2nd Chapter 2: November 3rd. Possibly not the only update today - I hope not, as it's only 1048 words and I'm falling a bit behind, but my arms are bothering me. November 4th, morning: 725 more words. I have to head off to work now, but I'm feeling much better than I have over the last few days. I'm falling behind but I still think I can pull this off. Updates up to the afternoon of November 5th: November 5th, evening. November 6th and on, sadly, will have to go in future posts, as we've hit the size limit. If you see any mistakes, please let me know - I may not have time for much editing on the fly, but I'll do what I can. Also, I'm more than a little prone to depression, so if you like my work, let me know; it can make a world of difference to know that people actually care about what I'm doing.
  7. Hey there, come on in and post your word count, give and receive encouragement, problem-solve, brainstorm and generally chew the fat about your NaNoWriMo project. But don't stay too long, you've got a book to write
  8. Hey everyone. NaNoWriMo 2017 has arrived and I'm participating this year. Some of you will remember two years ago, when I posted my entire NaNo project every single day. I had a lot of fun with that, and intend to repeat the performance this year. The catch is that I'm doing a complete rewrite of the book, taking it in a different direction. Sam and Hewn are coming back, but they will be joined by different friends, contest some different enemies, and some of the rules have changed. Even the original short story is somewhat different - and hopefully better. Of that short story, only 310 words were actually written today and count for NaNo. I will hopefully do another post later today, or catch up tomorrow.
  9. So... NanoWriMo is coming up! I have an idea for a magic system, let me just sketch out some really loose details. Imagine the magic from White Sand, except it isn't sand. It's actually more like the magic from Aether of Night. The magicians or whatever have these "crystals" the more experienced and powerful magicians can have them the size of a grapefruit, the record is something like a basketball, and the newbies would have them about the size of a pea or a quarter. Anyway, thats how big they are when they are pressed together. With their minds, these magicians can take these crystals and burst them apart in millions of tiny fragments and use them like arms or something, like white sand. They can make the particals so small that they can shoot these crystals through a wall, without harming the wall, and coalesce the crystals and stab someone or something on the other side. What I would like to know is: Has this been done?
  10. So i am doing Nanowrimo this year and hope to actually complete my first one. is anyone else going to participate? if so feel free to use this thread (Unless there is a better place if so let me know please) to post your goals, stats, lively discussion on all our worlds/stories.
  11. Anyone planning on participating in Nanowrimo this year? This will be my second time participating, and I wouldn't mind having a small group to work with and keep each other accountable. Possibly do weekly checkups with Word counts, and even a writing group if we are that ambitious. The last time I petered out at 15,000 words for no good reason, so I think a nice group here would help keep me motivated. I'm hoping to get more prewriting done for my plan before it starts, but I've also been saying that for two months, so if possible, it would be great to start the group early and get into the habit beforehand.
  12. Fellow 17th Shard-ers, I have a favour to ask; I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year and have posted some of the story I'm writing here: https://tablo.io/sabrina-castiglione/tenets-of-blood I would really appreciate it if you could click on the link because it gets me 'reads' which bumps me up on the 'emerging' page which will help me get more reads, in a lovely and not entirely sensical example of circular logic. More people reading = more feedback on my work, which is really valuable to me, so if you have a spare minute and aren't too annoyed by this blatant link-whoring, please do spare a click for this little lost soul So, please do click; if you want to actually read, that's great, but don't feel obliged. Many thanks x
