  1. I was thinking that Roshar would have very different musical instruments because of how rare and expensive wood is making it unlikely for there to be common things like cellos, guitars, violins, or any other mainly wood instrument found on earth. They probably have mostly metal or maybe even shell instruments that are mostly wind instruments. This just made me kind of sad that there are probably no Rosharan cellists. If there were cellists on Roshar they would have to play left handed instruments because safe hands.
  2. Hey do any of you read with music playing in the background? I ask because of the Kaladin soundtrack for the way of kings so I assume that some of you do so what kind of music do you listen to while reading I use cinematic, position, and techno type music. a lot of the time the book and music lines up so perfectly making the reading experience that much better. And is there any kind of music that you think suits a character like sezth with Hi-Finesse Dystopia.
  3. I'm planning a roleplaying campaign that I'll be running with my friends, and I want to put together a playlist of background music to set the mood. The campaign will be a Firefly-esque space western. I've already pulled some songs from Firefly, obviously, as well as the soundtracks from Bastion and Titanfall, and I'm thinking about using a couple from Journey. I'm looking for additional suggestions. I'm especially in need some more intense songs that still have a similar flavor but would work well for combat. Any ideas?
  4. Listening to Leonard Cohen's "Anthem," I noticed that there were tons of connections to the Stormlight Archive. It even suggested a theory about what's to come! I know it's way off in tinfoil-land but still, I thought I'd put it together. See the lyrics below, followed by analysis: Ok, we're not off to a great start. Are there even any birds in Roshar? But just replace birds with Wind Spren! They don't dwell on what has passed away or what has yet to be, they just enjoy the moment. This is obviously about the desolation. The wars have literally been fought again and again. This is my favorite part - this is clearly about the Radiants. The crack in their soul lets them bond the spren and then literally lets Stormlight in! Szeth, Nan, Taravangian and others saw the signs that the Radiants were coming back. And the Holy birth of Jesus wasn't betrayed, but the Holy Oathpact sure was. Then, after Taravangian saw the signs, he had Szeth widow a lot of governments. This is all about Rlain (and hopefully Eshonai). They can't run anymore with the lawless Parshendi who have become killers singing their prayers to Odium and his spren, who have literally have summoned up the thundercloud to end all thunderclouds!!! I hope Eshonai manages to stop running with that lawless crowd. Dalinar is trying to strike up the march against Odium. But there's no drum - few are joining him or even believing him. The last line about love has no obvious connection that I can see. But it got me thinking. If Odium is the Divine Hatred Shard, shouldn't there also be a Divine Love Shard? I mean, how could Brandon not have a Shard representing Adonalsium's Love? And might Odium hate that Shard above all others? Might that Shard be fleeing the hatred, and perhaps at some point come into men's hearts as a refugee? I admit I don't know of any evidence for this, so it's pure tinfoil, but I mean, it just feels like there has to be a Love Shard, right? Ok, that's it. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think. I saw a previous post about this (link below), but I wanted to start a new post because I wanted to explore it more deeply.
  5. So here's something you may like, pick a character, and say what their favourite song would be. Preferably chracters from something Brandon had published, but feel free to choose other characters if you think they are well known enough for people to get it. To get the list started im going to pick Shallan: Love the Lie, by Sage Francis The Lord Ruler: Kill the poor, by the dead kennedys Enjoy!
  6. I found a great song that as soon as I listened to immediately reminded me of the Stormlight Archive... Just thought I'd post it here
  7. Hey guys! I figured I'd take part in the whole creative-thing, but since I cannot draw or write particularly well, and music is my forte, I figured I could take inspiration from the Cosmere (or any Sanderson) to write. I would love some suggestions, like "dark emotional ballad based on Vin and Elend's undying love" or "bridgeman work song". Any suggestions will be acknowledged and much appreciated.
  8. So, is it just me, or do the lyrics for Leonard Cohen's Anthem totally remind you of the Stormlight Archive? See, I told you it was a silly question.
  9. OK, so I have a small high-school band of me and a couple of friends. my friend (Friend 1) and I sing and play guitar, and another friend (Friend 2) plays bass. I have been told that I am a talented guitarist, and am trying to write my own songs. HOWEVER: I can't write very quality lyrics. So... Fellow Sharders, I beseech thee, bestow upon me ideas or lyrics you have written, and if I write any songs with said lyrics in them, I will credit you for lyrics. Any ideas, lines, or lyrics are welcome. Not all are guaranteed to be used, but all are welcome. Thanks!
  10. Cosmere characters doing song covers! Or rather, it's me, singing from the point of view of various Cosmere characters. I've definitely stolen the format "Broadway So-and-so" from the Homestuck fandom, who used to have a whole slew of singers rewriting lyrics and singing them in-character. No, they're not all Broadway songs. Actually... I don't think I've actually covered any actual Broadway songs, but that could be fun... Anyway, I realized I'd never really posted my covers here all in one place and thought I should probably try to fix that. The newer ones are more polished as I've gotten better recording software and equipment, as well as just figuring out how to edit songs better with practice, but I figured I'd post even the rougher ones. Relistening to some of these is making me want to redo some. The Cosmere lyrics for each song are in spoiler tags to keep this from cluttering. If there's no credit given for the cover track, then it's one that was either an official version provided by the artist themselves, or it's one that I pulled the vocal track out myself. From most recent to oldest: It's Over, Isn't It? Character: Paalm, Shadows of Self Original: "It's Over, Isn't It?" by Rebecca Sugar and Deedee Magno-Hall (Steven Universe) Piano Cover: ThePandaTooth Lyrics: Light Runs Out Character: Shallan, Words of Radiance Original: "Love Runs Out" by OneRepublic Karaoke Cover: Cyberwave Karaoke Lyrics: Let It Go Character: Vin, Well of Ascension Original: "Let It Go" by Idina Menzel (Frozen) Lyrics: (Inspired by those written by @Lightflame) Additionally, I've done a few songs that are Cosmere-focused but aren't actually from any specific characters. Those are always fun too. Fandom Monster's Beautiful Darkside Description: Written in honor of the annual "Cosmere Fandom is Still the Worst Fandom" writing challenge, which is always a good, fun time to make everyone you know distressed and crying. Also, I love sad fanfics. Fandom monster's gotta earn her title somehow. Though technically the lyrics could work for any fandom, it was specifically written for the Cosmere. Original: "The Beautiful Darkside" by The Classic Crime Lyrics: Cosmere's Happening Description: Meant as a "fandom anthem," this one cheers out references to events and places all over the cosmere, because heck yeah, why not? Original: "Something Big" by Shawn Mendes Karaoke Cover: YOU SING Lyrics: In the Final Empire Description: A Survivorist hymn, meant to be from a later era, looking back on the time of the Originators before. (Also the first song I ever covered like this!) Original: "In the Bleak Midwinter," Traditional Hymn Instrumental: Sarah Brightman Lyrics: (written by @EHyde) So, that's what I've got for now. My SoundCloud has a few other covers, but for other fandoms. I'm willing to take requests, though of course, it depends on how well I know the song, if I can adapt the lyrics, and if I can find or make an instrumental track to sing over. Someone on tumblr asked me if I'd do a cover of "Colors" by Halsey for Warbreaker, so I might end up doing a Vivenna and Siri duet for that one. Let me know what you think!

Hoid could be labeled the first Worldhopper. He has appeared and been documented in nearly every story arc in the Cosmere including Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive, and Warbreaker. In this episode Elsric talks about his observations of Hoid and commits to keep an eye on the elusive man. There is a greater plan to his motions and all the readers of the Cosmere accounts should keep their eyes peeled for sightings of him. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Please leave a comment or ask any questions that you have so that I can address them at a future date. If you would like to share your art in a future "Letters from the Cosmere" please contact me at my channel E-mail: [email protected] Want to hear the story about how this series was started by Brandon Sanderson and myself? Here is a link to the story on 17th Shard: Script for Episode 4 - "Who is Hoid?" I am not sure how many men or women I have met who have lived as long as I have. Part of me can hardly believe how much it cost me both spiritually and monetarily to achieve this timelessness. Yet it doesn’t feel unnatural. On the contrary, I have been able to hone and master my skills far beyond what they were when my journey began. I was always skilled in the art of politics and playing the games of the nobility. However due to my longevity, I feel that even my subpar combat skills have improved greatly. When I found myself with more time than I could fathom, I took to the ways of the Cosmere and walked the paths between worlds. And I am far from alone in my exploration. I am not sure if it is my newfound abilities or a consequence of my long life, but there are “old souls” of whom I have recognized at a mere glance. Perhaps it is the vestige in their eyes, eyes that have seen too many wonders to be contained. Souls that have aged and flourished. As I sit at the edge of these chasms, awaiting my first walk into the mystery that is Urithiru, I seem able to see far into the night. Somewhere on this world, is another Wanderer, one who has lived far longer than I. You know of him as well, for he was to be found walking my homeland before I lost everything. Your response was cryptic when I inquired about the Wanderer whom I encountered, but I have more or less filled in the gaps you left bare. Oddly he looks nothing like he did back then, and your description of the man reminded me of yet another time we might have crossed paths. His eyes, the eyes of this Hoid, if that is his real name, look familiar to me for a reason. I met him in Hallandren itself. At that time, he was a master story weaver, a man who was often called before the court of gods and was very expensive. I assumed him to be an informant and never hired him personally. Yet those eyes struck me that day, although I didn’t realize why. He happened to be called to a party I had attended. He never said a word to me, but as he moved through the colorful attendees we locked eyes for the briefest moment and I nearly tripped. His eyes had such an intensity, like a fire burning too bright to look at directly. Those eyes drilling right through me seemed to strip me of my façade and examine my very soul. And then the moment passed and he was gone. Until now I had put aside this memory, but I am sure that it was him. Now the rest of my knowledge is distilled from speculation and guesswork. However, I understand that you are curious about this man and his intentions. Quite honestly, if I hadn’t seen the pure steele behind those eyes, I would say he makes things up as he goes. When he confronted me in the Cognitive Realm he seemed driven by a compulsion to stand before me and encourage my passions. He whispered his talk of the 16 shards and the coming deaths that a fallen shard would soon be bringing. It seemed so important, so well timed to catch me right before my mission began. And now I am here, directly interfering in the plans of Gods and men alike. He moves with a purpose, following a plan that I feel I have only glimpsed a drops worth in an ocean of mysterious intent. It is safe to say that this Hoid has traveled all over the Cosmere. He steps in right when a critical nudge is needed. I have observed him doing this, as well as confirmed some of the strange whispers of the King of Alethkar’s servant, someone called Wit. If there are important events happening in the Cosmere, a tipping point or critical juncture, Hoid will be there I can guarantee it. Each time I have seen him he has worn a completely different appearance. From age to hairstyles he all but reinvents himself from place to place. But you can be sure it is him. In fact, I would guess that his compulsion to throw out witticisms and sarcastic remarks might be the only way to truly know who he is for sure. That level of self-confident mockery cannot be faked. How he knows where to be is a mystery of the ages. However, I have seen many strange and impossible things these past centuries. Perhaps he sees where he needs to be before he gets there. This is a comforting theory, because I wonder if I am making a difference. If this “appointed path” idea is real, then I have been swept along with him. I also must impress upon you the age of Hoid, or more accurately the vast age of Hoid. To him I felt as but a child. He seemed to see patterns in the very fabric of creation itself. He might even be as old as creation itself. Hoid spoke of the ascended men and women who are now Gods as if he knew them personally. He whispered of the machinations that had been turning for thousands of years, and he said all this without batting an eye. To hear him speak was akin to hearing the stones tell tales of all they have seen. Entire nations have risen and fallen before his eyes, including my own. And yet there seems more. This is more of a feeling, but it seems he has seen the beginning of all that the Cosmere is, and that he plans to see the end as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if he out lives us all, and that is saying something. It would be folly to look for him. He knows how to hide, and I suspect he understands your abilities all too well. A man such as he must carry powers beyond what I have seen or imagined. Perhaps he seeks to chronicle all the powers of the Cosmere itself? His motivations are unclear, and that troubles me. I believe he is working to save lives, that much was clear when he spoke about the desolation that was coming to Roshar. No, what worries me is what he plans to do with all this time. There are things in motion now. My instincts tell me that Hoid is playing two games at once. A game that has been set and played for a very long time, and we are all just pawns dancing our dance before his agile fingers. This is a game he plans on winning. I am an informant, and such games are nearly second nature to me. I am impressed by those who understand the power of subtlety, and Hoid might be a master, despite his powerful personality. Perhaps this is his source of strength. Regardless, informants and secret keepers learn quickly that the short term game always leads to an eventual loss. If you want to win, you make every victory and defeat a part of the true plan. Hoid is a crafty manipulator. For that alone, I intend to keep my eye on him as best I can. So you can count on future letters about his work, so long as I can keep him within earshot. Despite all that he has done for me, the ones who know the most are the most dangerous. If I’m not careful, I could be set up to fall. Perhaps I will eventually see the board he plays. If knowledge is power, then he shouldn’t be the only one wielding it. Until the next Letter, Elsric
  12. Hey yo! Any other Lindsey Stirling fans out there? I have been a Lindsey fan since her YouTube origin days. I think I first heard her in 2012 - "Crystallize" and "Elements" were the first two songs I heard. Now I pretty much listen to her albums all the time - haha! My daughter loves to rockin' to Lindsey in her car seat . (Because, I'm a concerned mother who wants to ensure that my child is exposed to diverse things like...dubstep violin .) Anywho - if you're a Lindsey fan share your Lindsey experience! What was the first song you heard? What is your favorite song? Fave video? I am in love with her newest release - "The Arena":
  13. Hi everyone, I am looking for lyrics to put to original music (yet to be written.) I am exploring composing songs, but I'm no lyricist (unfortunately, because that would make life easier, haha) My genre is kind of New Age/Folk/Soundtrack ...Similar to my version of the "Veden Lullaby" which I've already posted on this forum. (If you haven't heard my "Veden Lullaby" think, Loreena McKennit meets "Into the West" from LotR haha) Please keep the genre in mind when considering lyrics to send me. If you have lyrics you'd like me to use, you can post them here or PM me. I would write music for your lyrics, record the song using what instruments I have and post it to my YouTube channel. I would credit you as lyricist, of course, and can put in links to any webpage you have to direct any viewers to your source. I appreciate any creative contributions!! I'm really looking for some cool inspiration! Thank you!!
  14. Hey guys, Has this been done before? If it has, I can't find the forum. Anyway, I've been listening to a lot of two steps from hell lately, and one song popped up that I immediately thought "Shallan". The song is Illusions, and storms does it fit her. To me, at least. Her lies and illusions, and how she has to tear them down, and it also fits her powers as a Lightweaver. As the music intensifies, you can hear that anguish and yet so much wonder and beauty. I just see Shallan in my head casting illusions, revisiting her mother's death, speaking truths and facing herself. That's some powerful music there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1qzm3UUTrg So anyway I wanted to share this, and ask you guys what other songs have you found that just fit a character from Roshar?
  15. So, I was listening to "superheroes" by The Script awhile ago, and I started drawing mental parallels to Mistborn. EVERY SINGLE LINE had some sort of parallel to Vin, Elend or Zane. The Script have made quite a few of my favorite songs, so I went back and looked for similarities in those as well. So far, I've noticed that "Break even" seems somewhat Elantrian and "Flares" seems to nicely fit Sazed's character development. Certain points, as well as the general theme of "for the first time" reminds me of Stormlight, too. I could be drawning parallels where they don't exist, but I just thought it was worth sharing this, since I found it really interesting Has anyone else noticed anything like this? And I'll post a full analysis if anyone is interested
  16. Hello Everyone, I'm Dara, and I just recently finished reading the Mistborn Trilogy, which was amazing. I also just ate up The Alloy Of Law, this too was amazing. I've only heard of Brandon Sanderson this year, so I will be sure to check out his other books after I'm finish with the Mistborn Series, so any recommendations are welcome. After finishing the first trilogy, I had this drive to write some music for the books, characters and locations. I thought this might be a nice place to share with some like minded people, the music is free to download from my website: www.daracrawford.com Music is also available through youtube: Warrior Of Ascension The Deepness Ball At House Venture If anyone would like to donate some artwork for future videos I would really appreciate it. I have a ton of themes, but sadly I still need to mix and master them before I can share. If you're into it - a positive comment is always welcome, as well as providing me with a motivational boost. Thank You.
  17. How it works is this: Somebody posts a song. Please make an effort to listen to the posted song before posting yourself, though it's not necessary. Once you do... Tell us what you thought. Then post a song of your own! The idea here is to both share your favorite songs and try out some new songs at the same time. But in a funner way than simply saying, "Hey! You should go listen to this."Of course, it goes without saying that you should keep it all clean. Also, try to keep it short. It would be a bit much if everybody went around posting two-hour-long symphonies. So, to start us off, I'll recommend Avicii's Broken Arrows. Honestly, I just heard it for the first time today. But I bought it withing five minutes, it was that good. Catchy song, awesome lyrics... yeah.
  18. I'm going to an infrequent workshop for composers, and at the end, a symphony will read and record a bunch of scores written by the workshop attendees. I finally got some inspiration! The Great Catacendre, or more specifically, the Final Ascension, the one that happens in HoA. I have (for the first time) have started hearing my score in my head as I want it, though it changes quite frequently. The problem is, I don't know how to write for brass or most percussion or harp or woodwinds, besides flute. I also have limited skill when it comes to details and instrumentation. I'm really bad at that. You can hear the music HERE on Musescore. You can't really see all of the parts, and of course it is incomplete, but you download the file for midi or Musescore and see the whole thing. It should also be a bit slower than it's played on the website, more 100-110 bpm rather than 120. So please help! Feedback, suggestions, and advice, is very, very welcome. Edit: that link goes to the new version of the song rather than the old one, though there's not a lot of difference, really...
  19. So I'm wondering if anyone's heard of it before. It's this neat online software for composing music. It's well laid out, it works wonderfully (so far), and best of all, it's free! flat.io
  20. This will be an updating list of music I've written based on the Cosmere. Some pieces will have their own topic if necessary (i.e. a timeline of events). Please give me feedback on the pieces, I need to be motivated to write more, especially to move WIP pieces to Finished Works. Finished Works: 4 (*new) Works In Progress: 4 Are any of these pieces worth finishing? In order from most finished to least finished. (All these tracks are private)
  21. I improvised a piece about all the (published) books in the cosmere, in chronological order. Listen to it here: https://youtu.be/9E-qNmhsZ5s No sheet music, unless you have perfect pitch and feel like writing it out for everyone. Hope you enjoy. -JP
  22. Hello everyone. A few of you may have seen my especially pretentious username around from time to time. While I don't deny that I am pretentious, I usually try and back up some of those claims, however feebly. You'll probably see something relating to Camp NaNoWriMo in future, as well as at least one other music project. So, this is something I randomly came up with about a week ago. I haven't really got anything which it relates to, although I have got a Mistborn main theme I'm working on, and am hoping to post sometime in the future. Anyway, here it is. https://soundcloud.com/the-young-bard/adventurous-theme (Sorry, I tried to embed it, and failed miserably.) Bear in mind that I probably will fix some of the problems with it in future and that it is far from perfect in it's current state.
  23. Alright. So I was thinking about music and stuff and listening to some a little bit. And I'm like, "Hey! This song reminds me of Hoid!" And thus created was this article. Feel free to post more music for more characters/ more music for some of the characters already listed here. Hoid's Music: Tarantella https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_HwBYBPeNg Kaladin's Music: Child of LIght Hymn of Light* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6w222S7ia0 Shallan's Music: Child of Light Woods Darker Than Night (For the timid Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfeXBePMLf8 Shallan's Music: Child of LIght Bolmus Populi (For the happy, outgoing version of Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TxMSzHdmh0 and Child of LIght Dark Creatures (For the Shardbearing, Lightweaving Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btKf2zVQP7E Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Child of LIght Jupiter's Lightning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBgV-RVPL8 Navani's Music: Child of Light Patches of Sky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4jB2XHJAW4 Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: Child of Light: Metal Gleamed in the Twilight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVLWMPOT4s Szeth's Music: G/S Burned Tower Remix PokemonRemixStudio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUlJA7YC_dk Hope you enjoy listening to these. They're all amazingly composed/recomposed by talented people. Kudos to them! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are some revisions I have for them and why I picked them: Hoid's Music: Intriguingly mysterious, like Hoid himself. Kaladin's Music: Reminds me of the battle scenes with Kaladin. Sort of like him trying to do what's right and best for others, and being simply amazing, pulling through every ordeal. Shallan's Music (Timid): This music sounds rather timid, like it could be played right after a tragedy, and it sort of reminds me of Shallan's conflicted childhood. Shallan's Music (Happy): This is a very cheerful song, as if there were no wrong in the world, sort of like how Shallan acts. Shallan's Music (Confident): Reminds me of the fact that she just goes through every trial. Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Doesn't this song just say "Shardbearer Champion" and "Blackthorn" to you? It does to me. Navani's Music: This one just seemed to fit Navani's personality. Especially in the Words of Radiance. Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: This sounds incredibly fierce and evil, like Stormform. Szeth's Music: This one sounded conflicted, confused, and insane. Like Szeth. *Or should I say STORMlight?
  24. Alright, so I have another topic about "old-timey" video games, but this one's about music.
