  1. So I've seen people talking about Bendalloy/Cadmium FTL travel. I am apparently a big stupid moron, because said posts sound like Greek theoretical physics instead of regular theoretical imaginary magical physics. Could someone explain it like I'm five?
  2. First up, Rebecca Lovatt over at The Arched Doorway has just posted a fantastic new interview with Brandon that took place earlier this year at Minicon. Highlights include an embarrassing story from Brandon's youth, a discussion on the setting of Dark One, an update on White Sand, and tantalizing hints about the future of the cosmere! Shadows of Self is already a little over a month away, which means that Brandon will soon be on the road again. Tor posted the schedule for the US leg of the tour a few weeks ago and today Gollancz has posted the UK leg. Also included in Gollancz's announcement was a mention of special lanyards being give away at the UK stops which according to the announcement can be "personalized with cards from either the Reckoners, Mistborn, or Stormlight Archive series". This likely refers to the special punch-out figure cards of Szeth, Regalia, Obliteration, and Newton Brandon gave out during the Words of Radiance and Firefight tours. Which would indicate that he's planning to do something similar for this tour as well. Remember if you are planning to go to any of these signings to follow the included links (or go to the Events page on Brandon's website) to find out that location's policies. Some of these events are ticketed or require the purchase of Shadows of Self from the store hosting the event. 3. Hey, so I had a thought today, tweeted it to The Man Himself, and lo the word reached mine ears. I think it seems pretty cool!
  4. Hello I exist. I'm excited for new material from Sanderson to be released. Recently read Warbreaker. I finished the original Mistborn trilogy earlier this year and am up to date on Stormlight. Would be open to advice on what to read next. Really just thrilled to be a part of something that will keep me posted on Stormlight 3. I'm like a addict who needs a fix, man! Robert
  5. How does the Steel Ministry support itself? It has been a little while since I read the books, but I don't remember any taxes. I remember only a few ways the Ministry gets money 1. The nobility pays Obligators to witness things, but that seemed to go to the individual Obligator and didn't seem to be that much money. 2. The plantation nobility also leased the Skaa, but that doesn't seem to be enough to support a government. Especially with all the "special" projects done by the Lord Ruler. 3. Atium. Again doesn't seem to make enough money for an entire government.
  6. I've had trouble getting into Alloy of Law thus far - the wild west style setting really doesn't appeal to me. That said, I'm a huge fan of everything Cosmere. I'm afraid to troll the forum too much for risk of spoilers... Do I miss out on any major Cosmere developments or details if I don't finish this book? I've read everything else in the Cosmere and just can't get into this one.
  7. A few weeks ago we posted about the Mistborn board game prototype that Crafty Games planned to reveal at GenCon. I found it quite exciting and was desperate for information, and there were quite a few users who felt the same, so I started work on this secret project. I reached out initially to Tellingdwar, and later to Crafty Games, about collecting and posting information about the game for those of us who could not attend. I hope you all find it as interesting as I do! Final Empire: A Mistborn Board Game The Game Final Empire is a semi-cooperative, resource-manager game set during the events of the first Mistborn novel. Three to five players assume the roles of various factions and must work together to solve the "Problems" facing the Final Empire. In order to solve these problems players must expend a certain combination of resources, but in return they receive Favor from the Lord Ruler. The six factions available to play at GenCon were the Noble Houses of Elariel, Hasting, Lekal, Tekiel, and Venture as well as the Steel Ministry itself. The final release plans to include a total of ten factions. Each round players produce resources (food, money, prestige, skaa, warriors, and atium) in different proportions and combinations based on their faction. House Venture, for example, keeping in line with the books, produces atium, while the other factions cannot on their own. Atium works as a sort of wildcard, you can use it in place of any other resource, and you can convert between different resources to get something that is missing, but in the long run the players must work together, pooling their resources, to succeed. There are 4 tiers of "Problems", at the start of each turn a problem is added to the board in the corresponding column and each pre-existing problem moves up one tier. If a problem passes tier 4 than it is said to "Erupt" (a nice nod to the Ashmounts) and it causes various problems for the players, such as increasing the level of "Unrest" or giving players "Disfavor". The main part of gameplay is the negotiation between players to solve these problems. Getting the right number of resources is only part of the issue, as players also have to decide how the reward of Favor tokens is divided. Anything except Favor gained in previous turns can be negotiated: resources, Personality cards, out-of-game favors, etc. Short-term deals concern the current round (such as Players A, B, and C agree to solve a problem and contribute resources equally and will divide the Favor equally) and are binding, however long-term deals which concern future rounds (such as Player B telling Player A that if they let B help them with this problem they will let A help them a problem on their turn) are not. Which has the potential for a lot of scheming and backstabbing. Another gameplay mechanic is the "Personality" cards. These cards can have a variety of effects, such as altering the number of resources needed to complete a mission or change a problem’s tier. They can also be used to add advisers to one’s faction, or kill the advisers of another faction. These advisers can do things like generate additional resources, or even make long-term agreements binding. The game can end in two ways, either the Unrest reaches 8 or a special problem card (Vin) is resolved. If she is not defeated and is allowed to erupt she increases the Unrest by 4. If the players are able to defeat Vin then the player who has the highest amount of Favor is the winner. If the Unrest reaches 8 then the rebellion occurs and the player with the least Favor (the faction furthest from the Lord Ruler) wins. The Reception The board game seems to have been received extremely well, by fans of the series and people unfamiliar with it alike, I’ve yet to find a negative review or post about it, they’ve all been very positive. Tellingdwar was actually a volunteer for Crafty while he was there and demo’d the game for five hours each day. He enjoyed it so much that one day when his shift ended he commandeered one of the boards and continued playing it with some of his friends. I’d say that is definitely a testament not only to its "fun-ness" but also to its replayability. Plans for Release and Expansion (plus naming rationale) Crafty Games plans on doing a Kickstarter later this year (around Oct/Nov, which would correspond fairly well with the release of Shadows of Self) with an actual release of Quarter 4 2016. There are also plans to release expansions based on the later books as well. These would use the same board and tokens but the cards and factions will be swapped out to match the narrative of each book. These expansions also tie into why the game is not called "House War". I will admit that I was one of the people who greatly preferred "House War" to "Final Empire" but Crafty's reasoning does make total sense. While "House War" does fit well with the base game with its rival Noble factions, the expansions will not have those same factions and will deal with different themes, as such "House War" would not be an accurate descriptor. Mistborn Adventure Game Crafty also talked briefly about what’s coming up for the Mistborn Adventure Game in the relatively near future. Up first is a supplement focusing on the skaa, much like Terris: Wrought of Copper did for the Terris people. The title, Skaa: Tin & Ash, was revealed earlier this year and it’s currently looking at a release during the first quarter of 2016. In addition to that there is a follow-up to their Alloy of Law supplement in the works. With the release of Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning on the horizon they have plenty of new material to work with. Crafty is currently looking at it releasing sometime during 2016. So what do people think of the game? Does it sound like a game you’d like to play? Will you be backing the Kickstarter? Is anyone excited for the MAG supplements? 8. Basically, I'm curious which major characters escaped or reached the last bastion in the whole apocalypse scene in The Hero of Ages novel. I'm thinking that if there is an easier way to resurrect long dead characters then there should at least be some bones to work to magic on. From what I remember we got the remains of: -Ham -Breeze -Spook And then we also have the bodies of: -Vin -Elend -Kelsier I was curious in case you need the bodies to resurrect, then how much of the old gang can be reunited? (also Sazed, Marsh and TenSoon could still be in the teamup)
  9. Hello, I'm a new, first time contributor to the wiki trying to feel my way around the site and it's needs. I'm slightly nervous about beginning, since I've never used the system before, but I've started gathering information for a lot of the characters that only have stubs at the moment. I have everything ready for Allrianne Cett at the moment, but I wanted to make sure I'm not starting a project already in development and see if anyone had any tips or suggestions for working in the Coppermind and specifically with its characters. I'm happy to finally be joining the community around these amazing books, and this is something I'm confident I could really contribute once I know I'm doing it right.
  10. Crafty Games (makers of the Mistborn Adventure Game) have just posted their plans for this year's GenCon (July 30 - August 2, only a little over a week away) which include several pieces of Mistborn-related news. Most notably they announced that they will be showing their prototype for a Mistborn board game. After announcing that it was in development back in March without much information, they have finally given us a title, "Final Empire: A Mistborn board game", as well as a brief teaser description. They've also announced a panel entitled "Mistborn: Scheming Across Scadrial", which they have not gone into much detail explaining, only that it is "a little more than it seems on the surface" and that "if you’re a player or reader of the Mistborn Adventure Game you’ll definitely want to sit in if you can." For fans of the Mistborn Allomancy Dice which were Kickstarted at the beginning of this year, Crafty Games will be giving out a free Aluminum dice (a design not included in the retail set or the exclusive Kickstarter set) as part of any purchases people make at the con. We also finally have a rough idea for when the release of the next MAG supplement, "Skaa: Tin & Ash", will be. It should be hitting stores some time this winter! So, is anyone planning on being at GenCon? Please tell us if you are, we'd love to get firsthand reports of the game and panel! Check out our forum topic here to discuss the game and other GenCon plans! Photo credits: Alex Flagg and the board game prototype from the Gamerati Facebook page. 11. So I got a nice little bowl to paint, and so I painted it - Mistborn style! Basically, what I did is but on the grey/black background, then I added the mists, which were two layers of gray, and lastly, I put on either 3 or 4 (I think it was 4) layers of some type of red or orange for the iron symbol. I have some pics here! Tell me if you like it!
  12. So, I've got this little project that I'm working on. Basically, I want to take (almost) all the symbols associated with Investiture and turn them into 200x200 icons (since that's also the recommended size for user icons here on 17th Shard). So, naturally, I've begun with some of the symbols associated with Allomancy (just the physical, for now): With these two (iron and steel, respectively), I wanted to show them in action. And so I did. It's pretty straightforward - I like the mists in the Steel icon, in particular (it's also my current icon). These two are definitely my favorites, so far. With Tin, I didn't blur the mists and put in stars and distant city lights to show that the senses are sharpened while burning the metal, and with pewter, I did energy ripples and a heartbeat to show that it gives the person more energy, more endurance, etc. Between the two, I have no idea which one's my favorite, but I'm leaning more towards pewter. However, now I have a question - what should I do for the other metals? For Gold, Atium, and Electrum, I've got some ideas, but for zinc and brass, I haven't the slightest idea.
  13. Coinshooter

    Tineye (Tin)

I decided to make the mists less blurred here to show that Tin sharpens the senses, and that's also portrayed by the visible stars and the city lights in the background.
  14. I'm proud of the mists in this one. It's pretty straightforward.
  15. Coinshooter

    Physical Metals

Here are the four icons of the physical metals that I drew, all in one.
  16. Coinshooter

    Thug (Pewter)

I chose to use a heartbeat to represent Pewter's powers, since it gives the person burning it better ability to endure hits, gives them more energy, and so forth. The energy ripples are also used to sort of give the idea that it's giving more energy as well.
  17. Coinshooter

    Lurcher (Iron)

I tried to convey that Iron pulls on metals, as well as display its other notable power, detecting metal. Pretty straightforward. Just the right size for icon use, too.
  18. Mistdork

    Flowerborn

Flowerborn: An AU where everyone gets their happy ending (other than Marsh) and flower crowns happen.
  19. Spoilers for TFE, mild spoilers for AoL. The Lord Ruler routinely spent time being an old man in his little hut, presumably spinning cheerfully on his swivel chair or something. He did this to store youth, and chances are that he didn't continuously compound atium because it burns insanely fast. What I was wondering was, why couldn't this just be replaced with gold compounding, for more-or-less the same effect? Gold burns much more slowly, so he could keep it up pretty much continuously. (The way Miles is discussed in AoL - and the way gold compounding seems to work, in generating more health that you can then continuously store away - it suggests that he doesn't need to spend time being sickly in order to store health.) His need for it also wouldn't increase as he got older, which would be a really big plus. I'm pretty sure that being in permanent good health would be enough to make Rashek look like a young man forever. Healthy skin does not wrinkle. Healthy bones do not bow under the weight of your body. Healthy hair follicles do not produce white hair. In fact, healthy teeth probably don't even yellow. Everything beyond that is down to his mannerisms and style of dress, so he could easily present himself as a twenty-something-year-old. He wouldn't die of any age-related illnesses, either. Shouldn't that make him sufficiently immortal? The best explanations I can think of are: - Gold compounding does not reduce signs of aging, because wrinkles and stuff aren't considered health problems. (Which would be weird, because they're caused by organs functioning less and less well.) - On Scadrial, "old age" is an actual literal thing that you can die of. (Which would make it a type of illness, which would mean that gold compounding should heal it from you?) - Age is some kind of spiritweb thing (not clear on the details) that somehow inherently affects you on a plane where gold compounding can't fix the problems that it causes. (Which would need to be worked out in further detail before it can really be used to explain anything.) - The Lord Ruler actually made a big mistake in starting to compound atium, and he kept it up because stopping compounding is an even worse idea. (Probably the most plausible explanation on this list, IMO.) What do you all think?
  20. I am a big fan of the mistborn books and I think aol is one of sanderson's better ones - particularly with the humour Anyway I have a question about bend alloy and ageing. If a slider uses a bend alloy regularly will he eventually age faster than people who can't burn bendalloy? To this effect could bendalloy be used to age faster on purpose? Is there a specific amount of time that can be compressed in a speed bubble or can it vary? I would be very interested to see people's opinions on this particularly as we have little information on the new metals.
  21. Tor today has released the prologue for Shadows of Self, the sequel to The Alloy of Law. Chapter one and two is now available too! I shall spoil nothing of it here, so you best just read it. You know, if you want. Shadows of Self comes out October 6th in the US and October 8th in the UK. After that, we will get The Bands of Mourning in January. With this plus Stormlight 3 news that Brandon occasionally tweets, the rest of this year will be really fun. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the prologue, here for chapter 1, and here for chapter 2!
  22. Okay. I was browsing through the Coppermind when something clicked in my head. I present to you, Exhibit A: HoA major spoilers: Exhibit B: HoA major spoilers and AoL very minor spoilers: I propose that the 2 are in fact the same thing. Why would Brandon have two nearly identical objects in the same series unless it were the same thing? Comments?
  23. I don't know about any of you guys, but I always thought that the fact that so little has been said about the effects feruchemical powers of nicrosil was intriguing, combined with the fact that it mentions the word "investiture", which I saw as a goldmine of hidden fun. So I was reading through the rulebook for the Mistborn Adventure Game, and I came to the section where it talks about nicrosil, and to my surprise, it had a whole bunch of information on it, that you can't find anywhere else. Presumably to make it usable in-game, so I suddenly had a brainwave and wrote a crap-ton about the potential powers of feruchemical nicrosil on the actual wiki page, but most of it is speculation, so in case of its potential erase, here is what I wrote: Although the feruchemical uses and effects of nicrosil have not been canonically explained outside of the appendices in the books, the rulebook for the mistborn adventure game states that nicrosil can be used to convert stored feruchemical attributes into a generic form of investiture that can then be drawn upon to augment any feruchemical attribute. For example, if a feruchemist has stored up a lot of warmth but suddenly finds himself in need of some extra health, he can convert some of his excess warmth into generic investiture (which is shifted into his nicrosilmind), and can then draw upon the investiture as if it were health stored in a goldmind. The limitation being that he needs to have access to all three feruchemical abilities and their respective metals, this means that a simple nicrosil ferring is incapable of performing such a feat. However, the rulebook also states that any power gained from an external source, such as an allomantic duralumin or nicrosil boost, or even power gained from the well of ascension or the mists could be stored in a nicrosilmind for later use. This means that a feruchemists who travelled to other worlds could gain access to extra investiture. For example, feruchemist on Roshar could potentially store the investiture provided by highstorms in the same way that Returned can consume it in lieu of breath. Despite what can be inferred due to previously established rules on investiture, (such as all investiture being considered fundamentally identical) due to a lack of evidence, it can only be speculated that investiture stored in a nicrosilmind could be used to fuel other magic systems. For example, a twinborn using his feruchemically-stored investiture to power his allomantic ability, instead of having to burn a metal. Or even the reverse: a twinborn burning his metal, but storing the power in his nicrosilmind for later use, instead of gaining the immediate effect. --- Now I know it is a lot to guess at, and we dont know how much we can trust what the tabletop game has to say about nicrosil, but I honestly think that this really fits with what we know about investiture throughout the cosmere. Anyway, if you guys have anything to add, or discuss, I'd love to hear it!
  24. Hopefully the mis-typed book title got somebody's attention of somone ready to fume at me Hey there, I'm new the whole forum-verse of Brandon Sanderson, I finally convinced myself to join. The reason I mis-typed the topic title is because when I first read the mistborn trilogy I honestly kept reading it as WALL of Ascension not WELL of Ascension, only about 3/4 the way through said second book did I double take and realise I had been reading the word wrong the entire time.. Just throwing that out there.
