  1. Hey! Just wanted to find out: when would be the best time to read Edgedancer? I've just meet Lift in the interlude, after Part 3 of WoR, and I have to say I'm loving her. Her relationship with Wyndle in so intriguing, I wanna know more. Thanks~!

  3. So, I was rereading Edgedancer when I spotted several references to Lift's mother I missed the first time. I don't know if there's already another thread on this, but I couldn't find one. Anyway, here we go. I think the loss of her mother and the subsequent things she went through as a result might be how Lift was "broken", allowing her to have the potential to form a Nahel bond. There's this WoB that says that there was loss involved in her visit to the Nightwatcher. From Chapter 5: From Chapter 15: From Chapter 17, where Lift is in a group of urchins: From Chapters 10 and 17, where Wyndle asks why she acts the way she does, and Lift later responds: And finally, the interlude in Words of Radiance: I think that originally, Lift lived with her mother, who she describes as a kindly, loving person, and that Lift was happy during those early years. Then, her mother got sick, and Lift, for some reason, didn't take care of her properly (or at least she perceived it that way). Eventually, Lift's mother died, and she became a street urchin. At first, she struggled with surviving, but eventually got better at it. During this time, Lift started trying to distance herself from other people in an effort not to get attached, so that she wasn't responsible for their welfare and therefore couldn't be hurt if she let them down. Sometime during this period, she couldn't take doing the whole "being cold and uncaring and emotionless" thing full-scale anymore and visited the Nightwatcher, asking to have her aging stopped. I guess this was an excuse for her to continue to run around flippantly without caring too deeply for anybody (since theoretically, she could say that since she's eventually going to see them die or something, there's no point in developing a relationship). I think her progression as a Radiant is supposed to help her learn to care again, kind of like how Kaladin's is about giving protecting another try. If I missed anything, please let me know. Thanks!

I really grew to love Lift after reading Edgedancer and Oathbringer =)
  5. Does anyone have a list of the 10 types of pancakes Lift was searching for? Will Brandon ever put together a Stormlight Cookbook?
  6. Now, I know this really isn't true, but just pretend it is for a minute and let's see how far we can take it. I was just making a list of the ten types of pancakes in Yeddaw for someone, when I realized something suspicious about them pancakes. There are 9 physical pancakes and 1 imaginary/spiritual pancake. Now, these here numbers sound just a bit familiar. Yes, indeed, it is now quite obvious that these pancakes are a representation of Odium and his 9 Unmade! In Oathbringer we learn a lot about the nine Unmade, powerful spren of Odium. Perhaps I can explain it through this overly complex and detailed chart which only the wisest of the wise and discerningfulest of the discerningfuls will be able to understand: 1 imaginary pancake - Odium* 9 other pancakes - 9 Unmade* *Storms, just look at the complexity! It all becomes clear now, the universe explained through pancakes! But I am sure there is still much to learn and discover, which is why I ask for you, fellow sharders, to help me in the quest for evidence and information to support this theory. Perhaps you could help ascribe certain pancakes to certain Unmade, or find other things which support this theory. I have a list of pancakes here: I dunno what we can find, but I can assure you that this will become the strongest theory to ever pervade the Shard!
  7. Okay, this is my first post here and maybe it's a little tinfoil. But hear me out! I have a theory that what happened to Lift at the Nightwatcher is similar to the creation of Nightblood. Here is some 'evidence' 1. They are both always hungry. She even understands when Nightblood talks about his hunger (Admittedly this could just be her being odd) 2. They both exist in multiple realms. 3. They were created by beings who wield(ed) giant amounts of investiture 4. Stormfather says that woman went too far in creating her. This would make sense as this is a similar response of Vasher to the creation of Nightblood. 5. Both can get investiture through unconventional means. I am not saying that she is completely like Nightblood. But the similarities between them is ... uncanny. The recent introduction of Azure's blade that's partially there to Nightblood status makes me suspect that some such thing has happened with Lift as well. She is halfway there. Like a human who's herself a Shardblade (Shardblades cut into cognitive realm too) Could this mean she's indestructible? I don't know, it fits with not being changeable. It would be really cool if she could use investiture from food to block Shardblades with her hands or something like that. Not a totally complete theory yet, but I would love to know what you think! Cheers!

    Just some poses for lift
  9. I bought Arcanum Unbounded the other day and was rather baffled by this excerpt, in which Lift and Wyndle were talking. Wyndle: I had the most magnificent chairs. Lift: Shars? Wyndle: Yes, chairs. (More words) Lift: Yu* gardened shars? Wyndle: Of course I gardened chairs. *It was spelt like this in the text. Lift is speaking with her mouth full here, but that doesn’t really excuse this wayward pronunciation. Has anything been said about the accent of the Azish peasantry? Is there a real world accent which makes ‘chairs’ sound like ‘shars’? Any help would be appreciated.

A quick Wyndle Study, oil on canvas 8x10, before attempting a bigger piece.
  11. At the end of Words of Radiance, Hoid and Jasnah are talking. During the conversation, Hoid says that one of the things he knows is what it is like to live inside a stomach being digested for a week. While rereading Edgeddancer, I've just spotted a conversation between Lift and Wyndle in chapter 12.

    How old is Lift

I might have missed it but are we ever told how old Lift is? i think it's mentioned or hinted that her gift from the Nightwatcher is some sort of Peter Pan, never growing up thing so was just curious as to whether she is a lot older than she appears.
  13. First time poster. I just finished Oathbringer (no spoilers in this thread), and it got me thinking back to Edgedancer. As far as I can tell, Nightblood's personality is usually driven by a need to kill/destroy evil. Although I have not read Warbreaker, I do have the Nighblood dialogue in Oathbringer to base this off of. The need for destruction made it seem very odd to me that Nightblood "liked" Lift in Edgedancer. I do not believe Nightblood indicates he likes anyone else, perhaps Szeth (but even then not directly), in Oathbringer. So my question is why? Why does Nightblood like Lift? I did a search and couldn't find an answer so I thought I would post. My only semblance of a theory is the fact that Lift has a stronger than normal presence in the cognitive realm, but I do not know why that would make Nightblood like her. Anyone else know of something I have missed, or perhaps have more insight into Nightblood's motivations from reading Warbreaker?
  14. You know that every Rosharan would set their telerials to the right channel when it was time for this show to come on air: The Odd Couple + Sword Setup: Refuges flood into Urithiru from all over Alethkhar, Herdaz, Emul, and Iri. Suddenly space is limited, Radiants who once had a room all to themselves now must live together. Due to the housing shortage Szeth, Lift and sword-Nimi are forced to live in the same apartment. Hilarity ensues. CUE THE MUSIC: EPISODE 1: Ground rules Setting: Interior of Lift's, Szeth's and Sword-Nimi's apartment. One side is barren, immaculately swept and has only one small square pillow and a pot with shinovar grass in it. The other side of the apartment is a sprawling mess, dirty dishes, half eaten chicken legs, old dirty curry bowls and dirty clothes wadded up and strewn over every flat surface. Szeth, sleeping cross legged on the square pillow, with nightblood strapped to his back, awakens and looks across the room at Lift's small form, hanging half way off the bed, snoring loudly with a half eaten roll clutched in one hand. SZETH: The young Radiant's burdens are light, she sleeps well sword-nimi. NB: Well, if you mean how loud she is, then Vasher slept even better. He sounded like 10 boulders rolling down a hill. (Laughtrack) (Lift wakes up, eats the half eaten roll in one gulp and then begins to scratch her backside with her shard-backscratcher.) (Laughtrack) SZETH: Ah, good you are awake. We can discuss the rules we will observe in our shared habitation. We must establish the bounds and determine the precepts of ordering our common living space. NB: Ah, the dirt and grime, all those dirty dishes. Let's destroy them Szeth, they look evil. LIFT: I've got a starvin' rule for you, stick to your side of the room and don't worry about my side. SZETH: I was thinking we could start with some common agreements about the cleanliness of our– (Szeth stops speaking mid-sentence as he is hit in the head with a half eaten chicken leg) LIFT: There, I just cleaned my side up some. Do you want me to clean some more Crazy face? (Laughtrack) NB: Oooh, she's so deevy (Laughtrack) SZETH: These are wise words, balance can only be maintained if– (Szeth is once again pelted, this time by a half full curry bowl. Curry drips off of his face and spills onto his formerly white robes) LIFT: Try balancing that on your face. Hey look, my side of the room just keeps getting cleaner and cleaner. I think if you keep talking like this I'll have my side clean in no time. (Laughtrack) NB: I told you Szeth, we should have slain those dishes, then they wouldn't have been able to attack your face like that. SZETH: I am a skybreaker of the 3rd Ideal, the surge of Division is mine to command. Perhaps instead of hitting me with rotting foodstuffs, I could assist you in the cleansing of your side by– (Lift throws another chicken leg at Szeth's head, but bursting with stormlight, Szeth raises his hand and applies a triple lashing to the chicken leg so that it goes speeding back towards Lift, who catches it in her mouth) SZETH: You will please let me finish, young Radiant. LIFT: (Talking around a mouth full of chicken) Sure thing crazy face, as long as you let me finish eating my starvin' breakfast. (Laughtrack) NB: Oooh, that was pretty deevy of you Szeth SZETH: I could use my surge of division to cleanse your side of the room of the accumulated filth and dirt, so that we could have a clean living space. LIFT: See now, I think you're missing the whole point. You clean up the room, sure, but then what happens? It gets dirty again. What's the point? Besides do you know how far away the kitchen is from here? Where am I going to put my food if I can't just leave it laying around. SZETH: You could requisition a larder or a hamper of some kind. LIFT: Yeah, a larder good that would do me. (Laughtrack) LIFT: I'd have to put my food into the larder and take it out of the larder, sounds ineffecient, and would probably make me real hungry doing all that, so I'd need to get more food. Then I'd probably need to get more larders and more hampers, so many that our whole starvin' room would be filled with larders and hampers. Wait a sec, look at our room, it kind of looks like the inside of a larder right now. (Laughtrack) NB: She has a point Szeth, it does look like a Larder. (Szeth stands up, robes and face dripping oily brown curry onto his clean floor, then walks over to the center of the room and places his hand on the floor. From his hand a brilliant orange line of light streaks across the floor, creating a scorched black line dividing the room in half). SZETH: You are wise. The room has been divided. Obey the simple precept that you shall not interfere on my side of the Room and I will not go on a Crusade to cleanse your side of the Room. (Nervous Laughter???) NB: Hey, what about my side of the room? SZETH: Shut-it sword-nimi. CUE END CREDITS. If you like episode one, feel free to write another episode of what is sure to be the most popular sit-com on all of Roshar.
  15. First time poster here. I tried a rudimentary search but couldn't find this. I was rereading edgedancer a few weeks ago and got to thinking. When lift climbs the walls by grabbing on to wyndle, is that really what she's doing or merely how they perceive it? Since she has the surge of abrasion, could it be that she is merely making the friction so high on her fingers and feet that she doesn't slide off? She doesn't understand it so she perceives it as grabbing on to wyndle?
  16. So I just started reading a webcomic called Unsounded, and all I can think about is Lift and Wyndle. Seriously, if you're a fan of Lift and Wyndle (and really, who isn't?) then give it a shot, and I think you'll love it. Also, instead of horses and oxen, this world has giant dogs.
  17. I have been trying to figure out what Lift's boon and curse are. I think that her boon is that she can metabolize food into Stormlight (although there might be more to it than that). I used to think that her curse might therefore be, on the flip side, that she cannot draw in Stormlight. There was a discussion thread started a few weeks ago that I found, where this was confirmed - Lift can only derive Stormlight from food, which could be seen as both a blessing and a curse. But there are several reasons to believe that Lift's curse has something to do with nightmares. There is a line in Edgedancer seems to suggest that Lift doesn't like falling asleep, and at the time I thought it was because her curse was having frequent nightmares. Looking back, I am much less certain that this line actually suggests Lift has nightmares, although at the time I read it I was very certain. But there is some evidence in Oathbringer to suggest I might be right. For one thing, we don't know what the Nightwatcher is the spren of - I'm pretty sure this was discussed in an earlier thread. The Stormfather is the spren of the storm, the Sibling is the spren of Urithiru (possibly), and I think that the Nightwatcher is the spren of dreams. It would make a lot of sense, since people go to the Nightwatcher to make their dreams come true, and she rewards them with something good (like a dream) and something bad (like a nightmare). This is further suggested in OB when Dalinar visits the Nightwatcher. So I think it's a real possibility that the Nightwatcher is the spren of dreams. There is an element in Oathbringer that makes me think that Dalinar's visions are sort of like dreams, and so it seems plausible that the Nightwatcher might be able to influence them - the fact that Lift can enter Dalinar's visions. Because Lift can enter his visions, it makes me wonder if her curse is somehow related to the nightmares of other people. I think that the Nightwatcher, being the spren of dreams, cursed her so that every time she sleeps, she sees other people's dreams - "a life she couldn't have" - or other people's nightmares - " a life that terrified her." So Lift is able to enter Dalinar's visions because they are essentially dreams. The Stormfather himself makes a comment when Lift appears that makes it seem like that the Nightwatcher somehow orchestrated Lift's ability to enter the visions. I think it seems possible that the Nightwatcher actually extended her powers to Lift. The Nightwatcher is a spren, and Lift is more sprenlike than normal humans - she is partially in the Cognitive realm at all times, which allows her to touch Wyndle. Lift is also able to turn food into Stormlight, and the Nightwatcher is very connected with Cultivation, who is connected with growth, food and vegetation. And Lift can enter other people's dreams, while the Nightwatcher is the spren of dreams (according to my theory). I am starting to think that Cultivation is launching a major plot behind the scenes to topple Odium in a way he least expects it, and that her plan has something to do with her possible influence over Taravangian, and her possible influence over Lift. I am not sure how Lift's potential ability to see other people's dreams relates to her boon and curse, or if I am wrong about this whole thing, but it's definitely interesting to think about.
  18. OK, guys. Here's the single MOST IMPORTANT thing that OB brought up. List told Gawx not to trust Dalinar because he has a good butt. Butt, (see what I did there?) Lift says (in Edgedancer) that she thought Wit was awesome. (As old Whitehead) So. That begs the question. The question for the ages. A question we need to get WoB on. Does Wit have a nice butt? The fate of Roshar - nay!- of the Cosmere itself rests on the answer to that burning question.
  19. I had considered putting this in the Edgedancer forum, but this post is far more about Lift's role in Oathbringer and if I had put it in that board I'd need add a Tag for Oathbringer anyway. I just finished my latest reread of Edgedancer and some thoughts came to me in comparing it to what we have so far of part one of Oathbringer. First, when Prime Aqasix (Gawx) talks with Dalinar in Oathbringer and speaks of considering negotiating with the Voidbringers has Lift returned to Azimir yet? When the Everstorm came to Azir, she was in the country next door, Tashikk. She isn't as proficient in her power as Kaladin, so she is still mostly walking as opposed gliding back to Azimir. I think it is odd considering everything Lift learned in Edgedancer that the Emperor of Azir and his councilors wouldn't at least listen to Dalinar a bit more. Maybe they are ignoring her or maybe she doesn't know how to convince them to listen to Dalinar. Still, I would not be surprised if Lift's interlude begins with her walking back into Azimir. The next Thought that occurred to me was Lift's third oath. "I will listen to those who have been ignored." As of chapter 24 who in Roshar is being ignored at the worst possible time more than Dalinar? Lift might be instrumental in getting Azimir listens to Dalinar. Finally, and this an obvious one, but it is still interesting, Lift will open Azimir's Oathgate in Oathbringer. You see I don't think all of Roshar will unite, nor all the Oathgates will be available by the end of Oathbringer. But Azimir will be because Wyndle became a Shardfork. Now I think Wyndle was not shown in Edgedancer as a blade not only because a sword is not natural for Lift, but also because Wyndle's sword appearance was held back for Oathbringer. Still, Brandon wanted to get Lift her shardblade quickly so she could open that Oathgate and so gave her shardweapon to her in her novella. Those were the thoughts that came to me. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Where do you think our awesome little Edgedancer will be in Oathbringer? Will she get to Urithru by the end of the book? Will we get to see her mouthing off at Dalinar or bantering with Shallan? Tell me what you think.
  20. So now we know why Dalinar regained his memories despite the boon and curse of the Nightwatcher lasting lifelong. Dalinar's boon and curse came from Cultivation herself and not the Nightwatcher, with the intention to let them fade after time, so Dalinar could deal with his burdens in doses he could handle. Here, Cultivation actively crosses Odium's plan to currupt Dalinar with the Thrill to make him his Champion in the end. Odium seems to be very wary of Cultivation. When Lift appears in the vision where Odium talks to Dalinar, Odium nearly seems frightened and disappeares immediately. Lift has been in the Valley, too. I assume that Lift also has been altered by Cultivation herself and not the Nightwatcher. Dalinar reeks to her like Cultivation, I guess her own smell is much stronger. The little unassuming and awesome girl might become Cultivation's joker and eyes and ears. I am looking forward for more!
  21. Okay, one more time, Arcanum Unbound. I have read "Listened to on Audible", The first two Mistborn books, working on the 3rd right now of the first trilogy. From what I've gathered so far, there are spoilers both directions, and the spoilers for the Mistborn aren't as bad as they would be if I read era 2 THEN reading Arcanum Unbound. I have read both Stormlight Archive books, and they are my preferred novel, I have also read Warbreaker. My buddy introduced me to Sanderson before we came to Iraq, They have been an awesome distraction from the suck, and I love listening to them as I drift off to sleep, I've found that in a often darkly lit room listening is far superior to reading, Especially when I'm just a few nods from a full snooze, These make the Novels come to life in my head. I have not read Elantris yet, though I will have in when I get my Audible Credit in a day or two, after I finish Mistborn Hero of Ages. I have already pre ordered Oathbringer, and will have one more credit in November. In November, Is there any book I need to read, either before I read Arcanum Unbound? Or, to help bring more context to Arcanum unbound? Having assumed I've read all Stormlight Novels, The first Mistborn Trilogy, Elantris, Warbreaker. What beyond those books are in the Cosmere that will be required reading for putting the whole Cosmere together?
  22. Lift can turn food into investiture, and Siri uses food to regrow her hair. Nightblood likes her. (I don't blame him, but still.) Lift asked the Nightwatcher not to change. She complains at the end of Edgedancer that it didn't work, that she is changing. But, on the other hand, her wish seems to be fulfilled, since she's been 10 for three years. Maybe the Nightwatcher gave her a different boon, but because she thinks she shouldn't be changing, and because she's a Returned descendant, she still looks like a 10 year old. I apologize if this has already been proposed. I couldn't find it.
  23. This song is for Lift and her awesomeness. (Who ever names the original song and the artist gets to request the next song I parody) Once upon a time not so long ago Wyndle used to work on gardens, the sprens been on strike He’s down on his luck, it’s rough, so rough Lift becomes awesome all day, eating all the dinners She brings pancakes back, for some, for some She says, I will listen to those who have been ignored I’m a child and stuff. I’m so storming pure. I’ve got a Shardfork and that’s a lot for some She’ll give it a shot! OOOHHHH, she’s halfway there! Woaah, dancin’ on a prayer! Take the oath, you’ll make it I swear! Woaah, dancin’ on a prayer! Wyndle’s got his vine-string in hock Now he’s holding in what he used to make it talk So rough, it’s rough Lift dreams of running away When she sleeps at night, Arclo whispers Radiants unite, someday You gotta say the oaths with what you’ve got It doesn’t make a difference if you’re awesome or not You’ve got the pancakes and that’s a lot for some She’ll give it a shot! OOOHHHH, she’s halfway there! Woaah, dancin’ on a prayer Take my vine, we’ll make it I swear Woaah, dancin’ on a prayer Dancin’ on a prayer! Oh, we’ve gotta slide on, ready or not You live for awesomeness, it’s all you’ve got OHHHH, she’s halfway there! Woaah, dancin’ on a prayer Grab my vine, we’ll make it I swear Woaah, dancin’ on a prayer (Repeat chorus) (Fade)
  24. I'm going to preface this by apologizing if this topic has been discussed before. I don't have a ton of time to read through all of the 17th Shard Forum so if it has been previously discussed, please direct me to the proper page (thanks in advance). I've been re-reading through Edgedancer and a thought occurred to me... Lift's ability to metabolize food into Stormlight seems oddly similar to Misting's and Mistborn's abilities to do the same with metal on Scadrial. We obviously know Worldhopping is possible and that all powers in the Cosmere are linked together somehow, but I still don't believe we have a clear idea about how powers translate from one world to the next. Of the worldhoppers that I'm aware of, none have shown their powers on more than one planet. Some haven't even shown their powers at all (other than the ability to worldhop). So, is it possible (or even probable) that Lift is originally from Scadrial, born with the powers of a Misting/Mistborn? It would explain why she needs to ingest something in order to gain Stormlight (I think metal would be a poison to anyone not on Scadrial which would explain why she needs food and not metal for Stormlight). We know almost nothing about Lift's past and where some comes from. If any of this is true, I'd also believe she was brought to Roshar at a very young age (before she realized she had Misting/Mistborn powers on Scadrial). This could explain why she's never had thoughts about worldhopping or another planet. My only question then would be, who brought her and why? I don't believe Lift would have worldhopped herself (otherwise I think that ability would have at least been hinted at by now). So what do you think? Does my theory hold any weight? Am I crazy for not thinking that Lift is originally from Roshar? Is there something in the text that I have missed which would point me to an answer? (I'm only on chapter 4 of my re-read and I don't remember all the details from my first time through). Curious to know your thoughts!
  25. Basically, this is how I imagine the Life-Nightwatcher interaction went down. I may be fuzzy on time details but the major point is what I believe her "curse" is. Lift (age 10 Roshar years): Nightwatcher, give me something awesome! Nightwatcher: You amuse me child. I give you Wyndle, and bring you into the cognitive realm. You will be able to touch Wyndle and turn food into stormlight. Probably some other stuff go ask Brandon. Lift: Who? Nightwatcher: AS I WAS SAYING. You will exist partial in the cognitive realm...you will exist as an idealized concept of yourself, but still with a physical form. This is your curse. You are as you are now, Lift, forever 10, and forever *cringe* awesome. Half-joke half-serious, but really, is this why she seems so young at heart, and likes to ignore her age?
