  1. From the album: Oathbringer Jasnah Kholin

I took some liberties with the details...
  2. Hey, so I've been trying to find the quote that contains what Dalinar wrote at the end of Oathbringer. It contained the phrases : "The most important words a man can say are I will do better..." and " The most important step a man can take is the next one." I borrowed the book from the library to read and have since returned it. That part of the novel really resonated with me, and I'd like to be able to see it again in context. If someone could please reply to this with that quote, I'd be really grateful! Thank you. Also since this is a forum for discussing Oathbringer, what did y'all think of Dalinar's writing? I personally see it as another step towards establishing unity on Roshar. Giving men the aility to read and write helps bridge the social divide between genders, just as allowing women to bear shards does.
  3. A portrait of Adolin Kholin. Drew this one immediately after Dalinar, so my first priority was to keep the family resemblance strong... thus the square jaw and thick brows similar to his father's. The rest of his features and the cheerful, social disposition are all Adolin though. Button your coat!
  4. I've searched through the forum and haven't found any threads specifically discussing this, which is a little surprising. If such a thread exists and I missed it, I apologize. Now on to the topic. What's the deal with Aesudan Kholin, Elhokar's wife? In the WOR prologue, we learn that Jasnah was contemplating having Aesudan assassinated by Liss before changing her mind and having her merely spy on the queen for the time being. But why? what's so special about Aesudan? Who is she? What sort of threat does Jasnah believe her to pose to her family that she is willing to go as far as have her assassinated? Sure Aesudan, as shown in Lhan's interlude chapter in WOR, is definitely not a really good person nor a good ruler, throwing lavish parties and being excessive, wasteful and out of touch with and uncaring of the common people. All of this make her a terrible person but it's not enough to justify Jasnah's actions against her. Like Jasnah had to have been convinced that Aesudan was serious bad news for her family to even contemplate going as far as an assassination attempt. Not to mention Jasnah had this planned while Gavilar was still alive, so Aesudan wasn;t even queen then. There's also the fact that Bordin, said to be one of Dalinar's most trusted servants, had been left behind in Alethkar to spy on Aesudan, or at least this is what Mraize claims. If that's true then does that mean Dalinar shares at least some of Jasnah's suspicions regarding the queen? I highly doubt he knows about Liss and Jasnah's almost assassination attempt against Aesudan since I'm sure he wouldn't have approved of it. But both Dalinar and Jasnah must now something about Aesudan that warrants having people spy on her. And how do the Ghostbloods know about, for that matter how much do they know? Is Aesudan somehow connected to them? Or maybe she's associated with the Diagram or some other secret organization since Roshar seems to be crawling with them. I think it's pretty obvious that there's more to her but what? There's something else mentioned in the Lhan interlued that might also be relevant somehow: Why is that? What has she done or things she's done that led her to believe the Almight might be displeased with her? I don't have any concrete theories about this yet myself, gotta do a little more investigation, dig a little deeper, look for more hints and foreshadowings and things like that if there are any in the relevant chapters before forming one. But I figured I start this discussion here to see what you guys think and if any of you have any theories/ speculations of your own or know of any WOBs regarding this because this is something that has been on my mind since I finished WOR.
  5. Hello, I'm a recent addition to this cosmere. I've been listening to Brandon Sanderson's books since I left America in March for my Deployment to Iraq. I've made it through 5 books, and I am excited about the 3rd mistborn book I will read this month, and the third Stormlight Archives book I will read in November when it is released. I have also listened to Warbreaker. However, I want the entire Cosmere in my library, Can someone list ALL of the books from Sanderson's collection in the Cosmere? Also, should I read the short novella Edgedancer before reading the Oathbringer? I have not had an opportunity to get any of the short stories. Also, it seems that Mr. Sanderson is quite involved in his community, where is the best place to keep my finger to feel for his pulse In this community barring social media?
  6. Hey there fellow fans, I posted up a series of portraits and moment paintings to the 17th Shard Gallery featuring the Kholin family a few months back, but failed to ever mention it in the forums. :/ Thought I'd bring it up now for your viewing pleasure. And if you like 'em enough, I'm selling prints on my online store at gmhansen.storenvy.com. Here's the Gallery post. Cheers!
  7. Adolin Kholin in Shardblade, wielding his massive Shardblade, magnificent and intimidating. A pencil sketch using a new style of shading that turned out really well. I'm actually really proud of this drawing,a s I didn't go off a reference photo for the pose, only consulting the illustration in WoR for the general idea of the Plate and shape of the Blade. Hope you like it!
  8. I took a venture into stylized characters a little while back (I've come back to more representational stuff recently so as to better learn the rules, and then go BACK to stylizing with a bit more confidence) and decided to do the 25 essential expressions meme with my version of Dalinar Kaolin. It was a lot of fun =) let me know what you think! grantmhansen.com
  9. Here's another stylized character I did a long while back. Like... almost a year ago... Wow. Iiiiiiiit's Dalinaaaar! Kinda my favorite character in the Stormlight Archives. This guy rocks. I'm going to be revisiting his portrait very soon. And moving his ears down among other fixes =) Let me know what you think! grantmhansen.com
  10. So, I know there's a gallery, but it only allows you to post one picture at a time, and I thought it would be a cool idea to share fanart illustrations I've done. SA is really colourful and reads like a graphic novel in my head sometimes, and I like creating character designs after finishing a book. Inspired by many many years of watching cartoons, as you can probably tell. Feel free to ask questions, give feedback, or whatever. This is just my take on SA, so artistic license disclaimer. Click to open spoilers, click picture to open up full size. Illustrated scenes "Visions from God" "Honor is Dead" "Lashed to the Ceiling" "Blossoms and Cake" "The Chasms are Mine" Character portraits "Kaladin" "Dalinar" "Navani" "Jasnah" "Shallan" "Adolin" "Renarin" Character designs "The Kholins" "Shardplate Proportions" "Dalinar and Navani" "Eshonai and Szeth" "PoV Portraits" "Frenemies" Shallan's sketchbook pages "AK + SD" "Stormfather" "Unconscious Brother" "Oathgate" "Adolin" "More Adolin" Silly stuff "Arena Groupies" "Eshonai the Explorer" "Mornings" "Kaladin Valentine" "Adolin Valentine" The end!
  11. I don't want to offend anyone or anything but i have been reading the way of the king again and Jasnah struck me as very independent and strong will .. as evident by her atheism , probably because she knew almighty was dead through her spren and her visit to spren world...but her being gay will also explain why she hasnt married ! Roshar is a very sexist world as far as we know , with strong emphasis on masculine and faminine art , food etc.. I I don't think any of their culture will accept homosexuality ..They will probably claim them voidbringer and struck them in high strom for stromfather to judge which is essentially a death sentence unless you have a spren proecting you lol....However I strongly belive with her Radiant ability which allow her to travel between worlds in cosmera Jasnah is familiar with other cultures from distance world and therefore accepting her own sexual orientation although she might never openly admit in her own home world.
  12. I drew a suggestion out of a hat a little while back, and "Portrait of Adolin Kholin" was what came out, so here it is =) I had a lot of fun with this one, and man the black and blonde hair was tricky. Still not sure quite how I feel about the way that I solved it, but ah well. I'm thinking that next I'd like to create some scene with both Adolin and Kaladin. Would give me a chance to revisit Kaladin now that I've learned a thing or two more about portrait painting =) Let me know what you think!
  13. An illustrated scene in the style of an animated series. This is not one of the most action-y scenes, but I thought it was a touching moment of honesty and intimacy between Dalinar and Navani, when he got over avoiding her at every dinner party. It felt like an insight into the old Dalinar, and I think all of us are getting hyped for SA3. It was one or two particular paragraphs that made me go "what the chull am I reading here???", which inspired this drawing and the characters' funny expressions. And also I just wanted to try my hand at drawing weird Rosharan vegetation. There are some rockbuds and my attempt at shalebark. Chapter 64, "A Man of Extremes", WoK Full size: Process pic:

  15. A portrait of Renarin Kholin. Not a lot of physical descriptions out there of Renarin, so I didn't have a particularly strong image of the guy from just reading. So I looked back at Adolin and thought "what would his younger, less outdoorsy brother look like?" Added his default expression of distant curiosity and voila!
  16. View in full resolution for maximum effect, please. OPTIONS > VIEW ALL SIZES > LARGE Character reference sheet for the Kholins and friends. Now you see what a bore Dalinar is by forcing all the men to wear uniforms 24/7 24/5 when all the girls get to wear pretty dresses with jewels and braids. I originally thought the havah was an overly complicated, fussy dress but after drawing them multiple times in multiple designs I've come to like their elegance and visual sleekness. Super large res for people who like collecting images or inspecting details: And for those unrepentant self-indulgent people (sadly including me on occasion) who like this kind of stuff - ALTERNATE UNIVERSE EDITION!! Would AU Kaladin own the Bridge Four t-shirt and the slave brands beanie from the Sanderson store? Who knows. And now you see why Shallan thinks all Alethi are huge. The Kholins' average height is higher than the national average in my country. The more times I draw a character, the more they evolve as I get a firmer grasp of how the written description translates to a picture that evokes the character traits and impressions of their personality that stood out most to me. When a character doesn't have viewpoints then I have to rely on other characters' relationship with them, and the occasional physical description that only comes in a line at a time. Renarin and Navani are hard for me for this reason, Renarin especially since he just fades into the background. And I don't think there's even a description of Salinor's blade that Adolin won in a duel and gave to Renarin.
  17. It is a fact of life that any longrunning - or doorstopping - series requires a fanservice filler episode (AKA, Interlude) for padding in between the heavy drama. Unfortunately for the Kholins, the Shattered Plains has no hot spring bathhouses. However, Branderbot 2000's imagination has managed to contrive a lighthearted situational comedy where Shallan is asked to write a report on Nohadon for Navani, and fills it in with some sketches of the King of Alethela. The delightful Adolin and his endearingly awkward younger brother Renarin volunteer their help. And of course Shallan accepts, in order to practice her feminine skills.

    BOY☆FRIEND

Since Shallan is a MAGICAL☆GIRL (boring clerk desk job by day, spy by night) she needs a BOY☆FRIEND - because when you've got files to steal and evil lighteyes to peep on, those pickle jars won't open themselves, and you won't have time to unsqueak those squeaky door hinges. Adolin Kholin happens to be the best BOY☆FRIEND. In fact, he took the title of Best BOY☆FRIEND from Relis Ruthar in Alethkar's annual BOY☆FRIEND competition. All the other potential BOY☆FRIENDs think that showing off their skills with long stabby things in the arena make them good BOY☆FRIEND material, but Adolin showed them all that pushing someone onto the sand and giving them a good long cuddle is what decides who the real winner is. Highjudge Istow does not approve because she is, unfortunately, not a MAGICAL☆GIRL. Anyways, made this a while ago and couldn't decide on a size for the glyph in the background. I think the size difference between MAGICAL☆GIRL Shallan and a Shardbearer is pretty endearing. It could give Siri and Susebron a run for their money but Susebron probably wins because he's a MAGICAL☆GOD☆KING☆HASUBANDO. Full image below. Let me know if you want a higher res copy. :-)
  19. So I hear using forgery to get dressed in the morning is considered excessively wasteful to most people. But hey, if you can do it, why stop? Let's see how far we can stretch reality... The result is the Cosmere equivalent of one of those Flash dress up games people used to play back in 2006. View in full res for best effect. Hint: (OPTIONS > View all sizes > 1800x700px)
  20. Did some doodling late one night while I had the "Scroll of Stances" page from Words of Radiance open, and decided to scan it in and do something with it. Now I have a nifty new desktop background. :-D Drawing Shardplate used to intimidate me and now I think I have gotten more confident with it. I still prefer bigger, bulkier looking designs because it feels more dangerous and threatening - a Shardbearer jumping into a fight is described like being hit by a boulder. If you want the desktop bg version, send me a PM.
  21. Branderbot's newest offering to the series is, once again, a solid contribution to the genre. Unlike the ghost-written parody version by "Sandon Branderson" (it's super serious and no fun at all, don't read it guys - it totally sucks compared to the Branderbot romances), tensions get resolved in a conclusive way. And by this I mean that a villain is done away with karmic justice, of course! (what did you think I meant??) Our dear Shallan has managed to stumble across Adolin in Urithiru, desperate for someone to take his shirt...along with his coat and very possibly his pants. Who knows what may happen next? The only thing we are certain about is that Shallan is now feeling very appreciative of her perfect Memory.
