  1. I was re-reading WoR recently, and I was troubled by a question that popped up: namely, why did Syl "die" when she did? For those who haven't read it in a while, we are given to understand that Kaladin's uncertainty about what is right and wrong--as well as his involvement in the potential assassination of Elokhar--caused his bond with Syl to weaken. This led to his powers becoming intermittent, as well as Syl reverting to a non-bonded personality. However, the scene in which Syl actually "dies" is odd. It occurs when Kaladin is rushing to save Dalinar and prevent a disaster. He is PROTECTING. He is being a Radiant. So why is that the moment when his bond broke and Syl died? At first, I thought it was simply for dramatic presentation. By this point, Kaladin had already manifested his ability to fly, so dropping him off a cliff wasn't very dramatic--unless he was put in a position where he couldn't fly. However, later on, I think I discovered another answer. When Kaladin is in the process of "reviving" Syl while protecting Elokhar, he overhears an argument between Syl and the Stormfather. The Stormfather is attempting to forbid Syl from returning to Kaladin and Syl is screaming back at him and Syl says something important. She says something along the lines of "You cannot stop it if he says the words," implying, I believe, that he could stop the bond up to a certain point. Given this, as well as the comment the Stormfather says to Dalinar on the battlefield ("A daughter disobeys") and evidence that the Stormfather has sort of cracked in the head following the death of Tanavast, I believe that Syl's "death" was less due to Kaladin's uncertainty and more cause by the Stormfather actually breaking the bond at a moment he knew would likely result in Kaladin's death. Thoughts anyone? I might be reading too much into this, but the timing of it all really bothered me.
  2. I've already added this guy to the gallery, but I wanted to toss it into the Forums for a bit more exposure =) Here's the first in a series of works centered around Kaladin. A scene of the aftermath of a battle with the Parshendi. They're on the retreat, and Kaladin is going to the aid of a downed bridgman. And he's yelling something.. Or yawning really hard.. I'm going to try to toss in some of the process work so you can have a look at the phases this thing went through if you want =) Lemme know what you think! (p.s. looks like the progress shots are all scrambled in order. Basically, if it looks crappier, it's from earlier in the process)
  3. This is my first attempt on a wallpaper. I like simple designs and I find dark colors more pleasing to the eye, especially if you're staring at a monitor for long hours. I made a scalable vectorized image of the Bridge Four Sigil and used the front cover wallpaper from Tor (copyright Michael Whelan) to display Kal in all his awesomeness! I hope you like it! 4. Massive spoilers for Words of Radiance ahead and I don't know how to hide spoilers so be warned. At the end of Words of Radiance Kaladin sets off to his hometown to rescue his parents from the everstorm and the parshmen. I am really curious to see what will happen when he gets there. Will his family still be alive, what happened during his absence, what has Roshone done, and what has happened to Laral? I want to hear what you guys and gals think so please comment and share your thoughts.

    Kaladin

So I'm not an artist... I wanted to make a 3d model of Kaladin, I got the body made in makehuman, and then I realized I won't have time to add the clothes. So I thought I might as well just give you a face shot edited in blender and gimp... Not very good, I'll admit.
  6. Posting the revised edition of this piece. I don't know how to get rid of the old one, but I realized as I put this one up that I had forgotten to give Kaladin his brands.. So I fixed that. Even though they're not super apparent in this piece. heh. If anyone knows how to edit/delete a previous gallery upload lemme know. I'd love to declutter the gallery of that repeat submission.
  7. Phew. It's been a while that I've been working on this one. This is a glimpse of a scene where Kaladin is going to the aid of a downed bridgeman, and is part of a series of Kaladin scenes that I want to create. Looking at this thing you might strike upon some logical questions, like: Bridgeman, huh? So where's the bridge? How did the dude get separated out to some ledge out of sight of his bridge if he had an arrow in his gut? Do you really think the shattered plains have such tall formations as you painted out in the distance? What the lighting? So if Kaladin is way back here, then the Parshendi in the distance must be retreating... so how did the Alethi archers make it way up to the front lines so quick? The answers to these and many other questions are this: I'm jus' learning. This was a practice piece, meant for learning. We learn best from our mistakes and MAN did I make a lot of mistakes in the making of this. But as a result: I learned bunches of stuff =) Thank you Brandon Sanderson for all the inspirations.
  8. I haven't gotten around to doing anything really big and nice, but I thought this looked kinda cute?
  9. So, When Jasnah elsecalls out into the wilderness in the WoR epilog, Wit say that its "at least a week" to the nearest town What if that town is Hearthstone? Discuss.
  10. This is my take on Kaladin and Syl from Words of Radiance.
  11. A portrait of Kaladin and Sylphrena. I had a really hard time settling on a face for Kaladin... I found it difficult to convey "gone through way too much crap" while having him still look 19. Good thing Syl was nice and easy to draw, phew.
  12. I was typing up a response to a thread, when I realized that the OP was asking if they should read SA--and I realized it would be bad to post this response in that thread. So, now I create a new thread! A place to rant and rave about characters that you liked or loved, until they did something that pissed you off so much you can never see them the same way again. I'd also like to make special mention that I don't waste my time with characters that don't speak to me. Even though I may disagree with virtually their entire outlook on life, they are still vibrant and lively enough that I can't simply ignore them. And that speaks to good writing. For me, there's two of these miscreant characters! Spoiler tags for what they've done. They were also two of my favorite characters from WoK. Kaladin Szeth
  13. As the title states, which team do you think would win in a duel, given that all of the magic systems work simultaneously. Team 1: Pre-Radiance Kaladin; unconsciously uses Stormlight as he did in Bridge Four, and has no shards. Vin at her strongest (But not as Preservation); plenty of Allomantic stores. Hrathen, ability as shown in Elantris. Enough said. Team 2: Raoden at his best, able to make use of AonDor. Denth in Warbreaker, plain beast. Eshonai in Warform and in full plate. Place of Battle: Elantris, Sel. Who do you think will win? Feel free to justify below
  14. Alright. So I was thinking about music and stuff and listening to some a little bit. And I'm like, "Hey! This song reminds me of Hoid!" And thus created was this article. Feel free to post more music for more characters/ more music for some of the characters already listed here. Hoid's Music: Tarantella https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_HwBYBPeNg Kaladin's Music: Child of LIght Hymn of Light* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6w222S7ia0 Shallan's Music: Child of Light Woods Darker Than Night (For the timid Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfeXBePMLf8 Shallan's Music: Child of LIght Bolmus Populi (For the happy, outgoing version of Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TxMSzHdmh0 and Child of LIght Dark Creatures (For the Shardbearing, Lightweaving Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btKf2zVQP7E Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Child of LIght Jupiter's Lightning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBgV-RVPL8 Navani's Music: Child of Light Patches of Sky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4jB2XHJAW4 Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: Child of Light: Metal Gleamed in the Twilight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVLWMPOT4s Szeth's Music: G/S Burned Tower Remix PokemonRemixStudio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUlJA7YC_dk Hope you enjoy listening to these. They're all amazingly composed/recomposed by talented people. Kudos to them! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are some revisions I have for them and why I picked them: Hoid's Music: Intriguingly mysterious, like Hoid himself. Kaladin's Music: Reminds me of the battle scenes with Kaladin. Sort of like him trying to do what's right and best for others, and being simply amazing, pulling through every ordeal. Shallan's Music (Timid): This music sounds rather timid, like it could be played right after a tragedy, and it sort of reminds me of Shallan's conflicted childhood. Shallan's Music (Happy): This is a very cheerful song, as if there were no wrong in the world, sort of like how Shallan acts. Shallan's Music (Confident): Reminds me of the fact that she just goes through every trial. Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Doesn't this song just say "Shardbearer Champion" and "Blackthorn" to you? It does to me. Navani's Music: This one just seemed to fit Navani's personality. Especially in the Words of Radiance. Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: This sounds incredibly fierce and evil, like Stormform. Szeth's Music: This one sounded conflicted, confused, and insane. Like Szeth. *Or should I say STORMlight?
  15. I wrapped up a Dalinar portrait study recently with the intent of updating this: It's been sitting on my digital easel for a while as I basically procrastinated getting into finishing up the uniform and such, but I eventually decided to just let it be a face study and move on with life. So without further ado, here's my interpretation of Dalinar Kholin, one of my absolute favorite literary characters EVER. I feel good about this one, in that I feel like I'm learning and making progress with each portrait. It's fun/painful to look back and see where I came from, but hopefully I can keep up the growing and someday maybe Brandon will hire me to paint a piece or too (wink wink, Brandon Sanderson. Wink. Wink.) Lastly, I wanted to throw in a little preview of the next piece of fanart that I'm starting into. It's just a rough sketch right now (and I mean seriously ROUGH), but it's starting to take the shape I want, and I figure that if I throw 'er in here, I'll be held a bit more accountable to actually get the thing done in a timely manner. It's a scene that I'm kinda hoping to make into part of a series, and it'll be called Kaladin, Healer - 1. To be followed by future Healer scenes, and then things like: Kaladin, Warrior or Radiant or Betrayed, or whatever. If y'all have good ideas for scenes or themes to mix into the series, I'd love to hear them! Here's the rough: p.s. When I previewed this post, the little rough drawing is SUPER tiny. Anyone know how to up the size of the thing? I couldn't figure it out...
  16. Hello 17th Shard World, This is my first entry in the forum. I've been putting some art up in the gallery and someone recommended that I post them here too so that they'd reach a few more souls. The cell-shaded, cartoony looking ones are all several months to about a year old, so there's lots that I look at and want to change in them.. I'll do a few more reboots soon. Hope you all like 'em! Let me know what you think. You can see them, and some more stuff on my website if you ever have a mind: grantmhansen.com

  18. Hey I am fairly new so I'm not sure if this topic has been covered or not, But... What could have happened to Laral and how might she fit into the next book? Perhaps she has even been broken, which could lead to her becoming a radiant, perhaps a skybreaker so that she can judge Roshone for what he has done. After all we wouldn't want Kaladin breaking more oaths. This could also play into a nice picture perfect scene of the two of them flying through the air together. Now I know some of this may seem a little far fetched I've just got this gut feeling that something along those lines is going to happen. If anyone else disagrees or has their own idea feel free to share as I am VERY interested in what other people may think.
  19. In his blog post here, Brandon is talking about the change he made to a scene at the end of Words of Radiance involved the confrontation between Szeth and Kaladin. In summary, he says that he made it so that the storm killed Szeth, and not Kaladin. Or more importantly, not Kaladin's Shardblade. I'm not sure if this has been discussed here before (I couldn't find it) so I'm just going to open a discussion about this particular quote from the paragraph explaining this. Source *emphasis added* What does this mean? Which Shardblade is he talking about here? Is it that Kaladin's Shardblade being living allows him to decide if the soul is taken, or give it back, or? Or is it Darkness' living Shardblade that is used to resuscitate Szeth after he falls from the sky? Or is it Szeth who is given/gains a living Shardblade of his own, which heals his own soul (this sounds the more likely meaning Brandon was going for)? I'm just curious as to what you guys think are the connotations of such a thing, which Brandon says is an 'important plot point for the series'?
  20. So I've seen lots of threads about favorite characters and the like, but here I ask the question what is your favorite thing? Shardblades don't count because you know reasons >_> also it has to be a specific thing like Hoid's flute and not a general thing like rocks or something My favorite is Kaladin's belt knife of last resort, the one he is always pointing at people who are probably about to kill him, and that he makes that shardbarer yield with in the arena. Special mention to the part where he drops it at the end of the book, that was just so perfect and it marked how totally out of gas he was. It was amazing. That knife is so cool, just imagine if it was able to talk and it was chilling with the other knives and it would be all "and then the assassin in white just bolted into the sky, screaming, at the sight of my pure awesomeness." and then the other knives would be all kinds of impressed and crown him as their king and build him a throne made out of knife blades and sharp stuff and the belt knife would sit in it and rule over all knives as king of the pointy things. the end. So tell me, what do you think is the best thing in the storm light archives? but you should know that your wrong it's Kaladin's knife.
  21. So for English I need to write a persuasive essay, and I can do it on any topic, so I figured I'd write about who would win in a fight Kaladin or Vin. One I thought this would be a fun thing to do,and two it gives me an excuse to reread way of kings + words of radiance, and the mistborn series. Your thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.
  22. What would happen if the characters from the Stormlight Archive existed in our universe at our time period. if they did then what social media would they use. Lift would definitely use Tumblr, probably as a fandom or comedy blogger and her blog would certainly be food orientated. Wit i think would use twitter. his entire existence on the internet would be to insult people in short tweets Shallan would use DeviantArt no more to say about that! I feel Adolin, Kaladin and Danilar would be competing Youtubers (i'd subscribe to them!) How about the other characters, what would they use?
  23. Does anyone know what Kaladin is seeing in TWoK Ch. 46, Child of Tanavast, when he is riding the storm? He goes on to see Szeth standing over 2 dead people. Are the flashes stormlight that Szeth is drawing from the air? But the Highstorm hasn't reached him yet? Is Kaladin seeing how stormlight usage looks in the cognitive/spiritual realms? Nothing in the books shows stormlight/investiture appearing in this form, and Szeth's surges don't give him any lightning throwing capabilities. If anyone has an answer, please feel free to help me understand this.
  24. This may have already been pointed out, but I didn't see any topic to do with this, so here we go. Some time ago I was perusing WoK for the umpteenth time, and I came across this quote in "Of Alds and Milp," one of the Kaladin flashback chapters: Sound familiar? In the Words of Radiance chapter "The One Who Killed Promises," the following is found: Sneaky, sneaky Brandon Sanderson.
  25. A relatable post of Kaladin that I found on Tumblr and wanted to share with everyone.
