  1. I just realized, Wax finds it a little easier to move around and support his own weight when Storing via iron, right? Since you can realistically only Store a certain amount of strength via Pewtermind at any give time (WoB), Storing weight simultaneously would mean you can Store more of your strength at any given time. Both Hemalurgists of the right type and Full Feruchemists could make good use of this synergy to get more strength for later.
  2. As I've been working on a Mistborn adaptation for D&d, I've been trying to balance Allomantic iron's and Allomantic steel's abilities. Problem is, I find this very, very hard to do. Any ideas for how Allomantic iron can be better in certain situations?
  3. So, I was thinking about F-Iron and how it works, and I'm quite confused. We know that it works by manipulating the Higgs Field (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/6/#e327), but what is that? Could someone explain that to me in simple terms? What would the ramifications of that be?
  4. I don't know if this is ever addressed, but can you use allomancy on carbon nanotubes? How about Mercury?
  5. I have an issue with some of the fundamental physics behind F-Iron. Namely, what it actually does and how it interfaces with Conservation of Energy and Momentum. As per the Coppermind, "Iron is used to store or retrieve (gain) physical mass. This is accomplished by changing the Skimmer's mass, not by changing the effect of gravity on the Skimmer, i.e. it does not modify weight directly ... The law of conservation of momentum still exists when using iron Feruchemy, so while tapping weight doesn't significantly increase the speed of falling (not considering air resistance), decreasing one's weight to half will double one's speed ... Feruchemical iron interferes with an individual's interaction with the Higgs field". I want to break this down step by step, because I think there are pretty big fundamental problems with this explanation. So, Iron changes the user's mass, not by changing the effect of gravity, Conservation of Momentum still applies. If this were truly the case, (and it must be to see the effects we see) than F-Iron users would not fall slower when storing mass. This is evidently obvious by facts we know in real life, two objects of different mass fall at the same speed under the same gravitational conditions. F = GMm/r^2, dp/dt = F, ma = m GM/r^2. Mass cancels out of this equation, and has no effect on the acceleration felt. For a feruchemist to fall slower when storing weight, there would need to be a distinction between Inertial mass and Gravitational mass. The relativistic explanation says that these masses are the same, meaning that iron feruchemy must be changing the effect of the gravitational field on a mass (ie gravitational acceleration) otherwise the change in mass would have no effect on the force felt due to gravity. So either we go with the Newtonian explanation (mi and mg) or the Standard Theory explanation (only one m, but you feel the gravitational force differently). This causes problems with other effects. We can be very certain that F-Iron does effect mass, as we see Wax is able to push harder while tapping iron. He clearly requires more force to be accelerated when tapping iron, and less while storing. F-Iron also cannot change both mass and gravity, as that would once again cancel any effect on falling speed. There also might be an issue with conservation of energy as well, but I would have to do the math to find out. Conservation of momentum is fine under the canon explanation, but energy changes by the square of your speed, so a skimmer storing weight will require kinetic energy. This could theoretically be explained by just stealing energy from the environment like (Extremely minor SA spoilers) but that would be a bit counter to the idea of End-Neutral Feruchemy. Please let me know if there's a hole in my logic or math somewhere or if I'm missing something, this is going to bug me for a while.
  6. So Allomantic Iron allows a Metalborn to 'Pull' metals. So what if a Lurcher (or Mistborn) wore metal boots and pulled on them, would they be lifted up? Would this be a more effective, though more tricky, form of flight through Allomancy than using Allomantic Steel?
  7. Okay, I am confused about Iron due to it being quite inconsistant compared to all the other metals. How exactly is it meant to work? Behind the scenes it interferes with the Higgs Field, which would increase mass and density. This is a pretty ingenious way to think about it in my opinion. But in Well of Ascension it says it only changes gravity, at least according to the Terrismen beliefs, when Sazed was traveling with Marsh. Yet in Hero of Ages it says it changes density, as seen when Sazed was breaking out of prison. Alloy of Law says it changes weight but not density when Wax was destroying the mill. And the Ars Arcanum lists it as "Effective weight" Sanderson says it is Mass and Higgs Field shenanigans. Which makes sense, and I do choose to stand by this. But the books themselves just seem to disagree with themselves throughout. So what exactly is it meant to do? I am getting rather confused about it. The first with the Terrismen thinking it was gravity is explainable through them just being wrong, but everything else leaves me confused. Does anyone have an answer to this? As it seems I am the only one confused as I can't find anybody asking about it and these apparent discrepancies in Arcanum.
  8. From the album: A lurcher with a secret

It's a character for a fan story in Era 2 I'm thinking of writng. If you look at his right hand it's translusent allowing you see the bone implying the presence of a Kandra. The Idea here is that as a child the character (Working name Caduel) lost his arm in factory work, soon after he found a very young kandra (though Caduel didn't know what it was at the time) only just learning to imitate flesh. With the Kadra's help Caduel has a working, living prosthesis. I want to use the story to create a mystery of who could be creating Kandra after the Catacendre, in addition explore the possblities of the powers offered by burning iron. I don't have a working name for the kandra yet, but I am how ever toying with idea of Caduel slowly discovering the kandra is fully aware, and for the kandra becoming somewhat of a little brother figure for Caduel.
  9. I feel the possiblities of burning iron have under utilized in mistborn compared to the tricks of other metals (ex. steel pushing letting you basicly fly, tin letting you detect poison etc.), so I want to write a fan story where the main character is lucher. I need some more Ideas on how utilise the power, so far I have: -seeing where metal objects are are Identifyimg which a which -using it to pull your self to increase your speed while in a wheeled vehicle (or pull on another vehicle?) -fastening on improvised armour -redirecting weapons in a predictable manner (catching swords, pulling bullets etc.) -shoot things given the opponent is between you and the object you are pulling or the object is behind you and the target is in front of you and you move out of the way just in time, -walk upsidedown on metal objects -bring metal things, like weapons or valubles, right to you -swing from metal object to metal obect like some kind of magnetic spider man? -levitate in place if between to metal objects up high -stop someone wearing in their tacks. if someone has anymore useful applications please let me know (side note, does anyone think there could be any way a lurcher or a coinshot could pull or push to specific parts of the body, like how they are able identify specific parts of metal objects and push them individually? like maybe if you split the soul with hemalurgy)
  10. Well, here I am again. Really hope this isn't annoying for any of you. So, I was looking around to see if anyone asked if an Allomacer can push or pull a Shardblade, and of course, I could not find a thread, and the Coppermind doesn't mention it as far as I'm aware. So I was about to assume that they can't be pulled or pushed similarly to metalminds. They have a hard time pushing or pulling something that's invested, and surly the blades count, being god metals of Honor, Cultivation, or a mixture of both. Then, I remembered that Atium is a god metal and there are plenty of examples of them being pulled or pushed. So it doesn't seem like being a god metal immediately disqualifies from being able to be pulled or pushed. So would Allomancers be able to push on Shardblades? And a little bonus question I thought while typing this, are god metals considered invested? Because the reason metalminds are hard to push is because of the investiture stored in them, and Atium does not appear to be resistant to pulls or pushes. So are god metals not technically invested? EDIT: Okay, so the answer for the above questions by Brandon Sanderson himself is no, it's very difficult to push or pull god metals and they are basically pure Investure (read threads below). HOWEVER, this brought up a different question/theory about the nature of Atium, which is a God metal that can be pushed and pulled with relative ease, which contradicts what Bradon Sanderson said about Godmetals. My first reaction was that it was made fairly early on and Brandon Sanderson didn't have certain things figured out, so we should ignore Atium/ consider it an outlier when figuring out the properties of god metals. But then I remembered that Atium was Brandon Sanderson's way of introducing Fortune to the Cosmere, and that in the Feruchemy table, Investure and Fortune are considered separate, so rather than being pure Investure, is Atium pure Fortune and that's why it's properties don't follow with other god metals? (Another note, if it is Fortune, it may have been a purposeful play by Preservation to limit Ruin's foresight, which may be a big factor in his plan, as Ruin's foresight has been accepted as not as good as other Shards like Cultivation, Preservation, and maybe Endowment.)
  11. I was just wondering if we think it is possible for a Lurcher to be able to burn the iron that is part of his body, the iron that helps to produce red blood cells. Maybe iron-deficiency anemia is more common with Lurchers. Like could they just burn all the iron in their body and die? Or if they don't necessarily know that iron is a part of their body, would they be able to feel it as a part of their reserve? If there is a WOB that answers this then please provide.
  12. Hey 17th shard. I took a long step away from the Cosmere while waiting for new books and have recently come back. While poking around, I saw some bits of info that contradicted some of the older theories on Iron. Here's my question: is it still assumed that, via a clever application of Iron storing and steel pushing off an object, then tapping Iron and Ironpulling, that one could effectively fly by reusing their anchor? I had a series of mildly interesting posts planned based on this concept ages ago, so I was wondering if this idea still held up.
  13. My question for you all is, are there advance skills in steel pushing and Iron pulling that we haven't seen yet. I have a few ideas on abilities that steel and iron allomancy should be able to do. Create steel and iron lines not from one center of gravity. Allomancers can see non metallic objects due to the trace metals in those objects. This is due probably to a change in perception (as we know that perception can limit or expand on a magic users abilities). So if the Allomancer is able to trick him/her self into thinking say their hand is their center of gravity, then I see no reason that the can't the blue line come form there. Bend or twist the blue lines. Again this will hinge on whether perception can interfere in an allomancers ability with there metal. If an Allomancer perceives that the blue don't have to all ways be straight then they should be able to make them bend or twist. This will mean that then can push or pull on an angle. what other abilities that you think allomancers should be able to accomplish but are can't because they are putting artificial limits on themselves.
  14. When storing weight in an ironmind, are you limited to your body? Or can you store the weight of your clothing and metalminds as well?
  15. So I was wondering I were a Mistborn and there was a long iron girder in front of me when I burn steel would I see a single Allomantic line leading to this beam or would there be lines along its length. Would I be able to push the beam at a single end or would I only be able to push on its centre of mass? Random question but I just wondered
  16. After re-reading Shadows of Self, I got to the rope hook part of Wax trying to find Bleeder and got to thinking, besides the usual use of compounding to make near unlimited amounts of weight, couldn't an Iron twinborn compounder shoot a bullet and then ironpull at the bullet in flight with their weight as low as possible for super fast travel? I know there's a maximum limit to storing weight, but Wax always implies he can go fully weightless in the books, though it might be a hyperbole.
  17. Say you had a big iron statue, could a mistborn go and push on the head of the statue while pulling only the legs? Can an allomancer pull/push on only one part of a metal object while leaving the rest alone? I'm thinking that with practice, they could. I feel like it would be similar to using a piercing as an allomantic reserve (Which I'm pretty sure we have a WoB on) Thoughts? Opinions?
  18. Most of us would probably answer the question "Can a Feruchemist store an attribute while they are asleep?" by saying that they can only store wakefulness and I still have seen that stated post Bands of Mourning but doesn't the scene in the skimmer effectively disprove this? It needs to be lightweight to fly, which is why all the crewmembers need an iron metalmind. Yet according to Marasi, most of the team uses their journey to the temple to get some sleep in. If they couldn't store weight while sleeping, then there really should have been a mention of the skimmer plummeting down by the increase in weight. Obviously that didn't happen. Does anyone have an explanation for that or can we strike that limitation from Feruchemy?
  19. So, can Lurchers Pull objects hidden in buildings. For example, I'm standing on a street and there's a huge chunk of metal inside a building. Can I Pull on it? I finished the first three Mistborn books, but I forgot about this.
  20. Hey all, Vice, nice to meet you all. I have a couple of character ideas based on the infrastructure Mr. Sanderson created with the twinborn addition to Scadrial. A group of talented mistings and ferrings split from the familiar lands under the influence of the Lord Mistborn. They journeyed to the lands furthest from civilization to start a new way of life based on the philosophy of perfecting the art of allomancy and ferruchemy. Over time the masters developed their ideas and created a synthesis between burning allomantic fuel and perfection of movement. This combination of mastery generated the primary component of this new art, "pulsing (vs. "burning")" Pulsing is a consistent consumption of allomantic fuel cycled and maintained by a misting. Average consumption is likened more to an automobile engine, revving the output with a pedal-push modality. Pulsing regulates the output to a wave or a frequency. The high and low cycles maximizes fuel consumption and promotes precision control of output. Enter our first character, Locke Smythe, iron compounder: lifelong practice with tai chi chuan has given him absolute control of his core movement. Combining iron pulling with perfect spatial positioning allows him to influence the trajectory of a yanked object, hulahooping an object around himself to launch at opponents, very much like chained weapons. As a child, Locke was made to practice orbiting a dripping paintbrush around himself while standing on parchment. His masters used his "paintings" as a measure of his control. Locke had to maintain the initial speed and momentum by modulating his pull. Rhythmic timing, giving just enough pull to alter its trajectory and momentum, can create extremely controlled figure eight patterns which intuitive proficiency can weaponize. Once Locke proved his mastery over his "pulse" weapon he began training his control over accessing and storing his weight to and from his ironmind. His masters would position needles above and below him while having him maintain his perfect weight to hold position between them (while tethered so the wind wouldn't blow him away). Once he developed intuitive control over his weight modulation he had to practice jumping "light"(with reduced weight) and falling"heavy" to light soft landing, in sequence with spinning studded boards offset to give him safety only as he continues to jump and land unerringly. Locke soon found that by launching his weapon skyward and then lightening himself enough to be yanked by his pull on his airborne weapon he could weapon toss himself as far up and as far away as he wanted. To land he adds weight enough to descend at a comfortable speed and around twenty to ten feet above landing he sends the weapon skyward again pulse-pulling himself to a controlled touchdown. Further training experimentation has turned Locke into a competent airborne opponent capable of chasing down escaping coinshots. Currently he is developing an bow-launched gauntlet that can fire serrated pins, shuriken and bolts that dig deep in opponent flesh and create metal anchors he can use to control the victim's position. Once captured, Locke can then parabola-whip his enemies around himself and launch them at their allies or merely distort their positioning in melee combat destroying their balance and dropping them negative space or placing them inside his range. Opponents can be kicked away and yanked back for more destruction all while the anchor is moving inside their flesh. Some success has been had in launched clawed chains that dig into armor and become sturdy anchors for Locke's manipulation. In a pinch, bullets or leadshot become reliable tools for manipulation. I invite thoughts, criticisms, witticisms and the like -Vice
  21. What happens when I finish the repetitious math work in class, have a marker, and sufficient boredom. From thumb to pinkie, it's: iron, steel, atium, tin, and pewter.
  22. From the Ars Arcanum: The blue lines of iron-sight and steel-sight seem to hold a lot of information. For example, Oudeis provided evidence before that Ranette's use of iron may have given her the ability to identify other metals, simply using her ironsight. Maybe this is because she's an iron savant? With this in mind, what if there is more information to be gleaned about metals and their relationship to iron and steel sight? The Ars Arcanum quote above leads me to believe that the size of the blue line is directly correlated to the "size" of the metal source and that the brightness of the line depends on the "proximity" of the metal source. A lot of quotes from the original Mistborn trilogy seem to back this up. However...I've found inconsistencies in the quotes from the original trilogy AND I want to propose that the word "size" is incorrect. I'd argue that "mass" makes more sense instead and would fit better with Ranette's metal identification skills. This quote shows that proximity does in fact have an effect on the brightness/illumination of the blue lines. It reminds me of the Doppler Effect. As you move away from the metal sources the color dims like the sound of the waning Doppler Effect. We also have a mention of width, but nothing to the effect of size or mass. The next quote helps us here better. Here we see that the size of the metal dictates the thickness of lines. Seems pretty straightforward, and confirms the Ars Arcanum, right? The bold sentence (emphasis mine) contradicts the Ars Arcanum. The word "faint" should be replaced with "thin", because a size, small, is referenced afterwards. Here Kelsier is confusing the correlation of the illumination of the blue lines with what should instead be a description of the blue lines thickness. Either Kelsier is misinformed or Brandon made a mistake here. Whichever it is, this led me to think more about what the full description of the blue lines really means. There is plenty of evidence (which I won't quote here) throughout the books that shows that the illumination of the blue lines is indeed correlated with proximity. I have no problem with this observation by the author of the Ars Arcanum or the other characters in the book. However, I believe that interpreting thickness as "size" is incorrect. All the evidence in the book shows that proximity and illumination vary while the thickness of the blue lines never varies when an person is burning iron or steel and looking at their blue lines. At least, there is never a description of the thickness changing. This, to me, is because the mass of an object is fixed. Yes, size matters too, but it's more than that. It's quite common for size to be misinterpreted when commonly talking about mass. Here's how Wikipedia defines mass with regards to physics: Does this sound familiar? I think so. It sounds a lot like how the iron and steelsight actually works. When Vin is first testing out her steel push with Kelsier on the top of the Luthadel wall, she notices that there is a limit to how how high she can push. Her steel-line fades in color, but she never comments upon the thickness. This is because the mass of the coin doesn't change. It's fixed because of the metal the coin is made out of. But what would happen if she uses a coin with a higher mass? The "size" is the same, but the mass increases...would the thickness of the steel-line increase and thus allow Vin to push herself even higher? I'd argue yes. Let's think about this slightly differently. As we move down the periodic table of elements, each element has a higher atomic mass. Thus, the same number of atoms for gold, for example, will have a higher mass than the same number of atoms for iron. Now let's compare the same size unit for these metals: a cubic foot of iron weights 491 pounds while a cubic foot of gold weighs 1206 pounds. All because the mass of the atoms of the two elements is different. Would we really expect equal steel push strength on both of this slabs of metal? I'd argue no, because I think steel pushing specifically relates to the mass of the object you're pushing against. Thus size is irrelevant. But mass is important. Let's pretend Vin uses a gold coin instead of an iron coin to push herself. I'd argue that since the mass is different but the size is the same, she'd observe a thicker blue line AND be able to push her self higher. What implications does this have on the whole for Scadrial? Well, a weaker coinshot could artificially inflate their powers by using coins with a higher mass relative to a stronger coinshot using simple iron coins. Thus they'd appear to be stronger than they actually are, because everyone thinks steel pushing is all about size of the metal source instead of mass. This reminds me of arbitrage in finance. If someone were to discover this, they could take advantage of this information. Which brings us back to Oudeis' insight on Ranette's ability to determine which metals are what simply by using her ironsight. Is she identifying metals because of each metals unique mass as seen through the blue lines of her ironsight? Yes, if you ask me.
  23. Coinshooter

    Lurcher (Iron)

I tried to convey that Iron pulls on metals, as well as display its other notable power, detecting metal. Pretty straightforward. Just the right size for icon use, too.
  24. The books give us very little in the way of information on Allomantic Savants, but ever since first reading the second book years ago, i've been fascinated by the implications. Does anyone know if Sanderson has given any hints about Savants other than tineyes? Could a misting reach duralumin boosted levels with their allomancy? Could an Atium misting with a mountain of atium theoretically gain true future sight from atium as Elend did via duralumin There's so much unexplored territory with the savants.
  25. So I just have a quick question that I haven't found an answer to yet. Maybe I've just over looked it. But I'm listening to the Alloy fo Law audio book and I'm at the fight on the top of the train and at one point, Wax Pushes off the tracks a couple times. My question is this: To what part of the metal do the blue lines of Steel/Iron point if the metal is extremely long? My initial instinct was to say the middle but then I though about super long beams of metal like the tracks and it made me reconsider. Something I hadn't thought of till I was typing this was maybe it just reads each different section of the bars on the tracks as a separate piece of metal, but that's still pretty long. And then you look at cars or huge girders or very long poles. For instance the spires of Kredik Shaw. Vin pulled herself up to the tips of these a few times if I remember right. So do the lines move? What do you think?
