  1. With another Dragonsteel convention, there are some new WoB, many of which have some very interesting implications. For instance, this one caught my attention: So here's a couple hypotheses that spawned from this: 1. Let's say Wax were to have his Allomancy stolen by the Set with a Hemalurgic spike. Harmony doesn't like that his Sword is now weakened, so has Marsh create an Unsealed Duraluminmind that holds Connection to Harmony and his Mists, then gives it to Wax so he can Tap the Connection and at least temporarily restore his Allomancy (yes, F-gold via Hemalurgy or possibly Unsealed Goldmind would be better, but this is a hypothetical), as he is quite familiar with the power; his soul has become permeated with its essence, and his Cognitive aspect remembers using it clearly. Basically, would you think this is enough for him to re-access his lost power, as he still remembers the input to command the Investiture and as a Scadrien he probably wouldn't have an Identity issue? 2. Here's another one to stretch the limits a bit more. What if a well-practiced Allomancer/Feruchemist were to store memories of them using their power(s) in an Unsealed Coppermind and they gave it to another Scadrien, though on that doesn't naturally have powers. That non-Metalborn then Taps those memories and draws on some Unkeyed Investiture. Do they have the ability to direct that Investiture in a similar fashion to the powers of person whose memories they Tapped? 3. If a Scadrien were to Tap lots of Connection to Scadrial's land, Harmony, or Preservation (might be a little interchangeable, as they Connect to each other so much) via Duralumin Compounding, could they draw in the Mists when in them to act in a similar fashion the Unkeyed Dor? If Identity to Harmony is still somehow an issue, then Blank Identity as well while you're at it.
  2. I found this quote, and I find the ramifications exciting: This explicitly states that conflict of Identity is what makes Investiture resist Investiture. Okay, well, that and the fact that if something is saturated with a lot of Investiture it would be harder to Invest it simply because there is no room left in it to take that Investiture, but the first point about Identity is huge. This actually explains why a Mistborn has no trouble using their powers all together; they all belong to the same Identity, so there is no conflict between them. This also would help explain why Radiants don't have difficulty using their Surges while wearing their own Plate, such as why a Windrunner can fly with their Plate on while their allies must doff it in order to be sent hurtling through the sky (as seen in Dalinar's visions). It also makes me wonder about some other things. For example, could a Twinborn with A-steel or iron more easily push or pull on their own Metalminds? Could they have a suit of armor made of Invested Metalminds and still Steelpush or Ironpull without too much interference (I know that those get weaker due to physical obstruction, but armor wouldn't be that thick)? Maybe they could use this method to have ammo to Steelpush that only they can affect with any decent ability (unless their opponent is a really powerful Allomancer). This also would make it easier to do things like Awaken Invested objects (such as Metalminds or Hemalurgic spikes).
  3. So, first things first, during TLM the Set were shown to have discovered how to use hemalurgy (likely with a Nicrosil spike) to strip a Scadrian of the extra bit of Preservation's Investiture that exists in all Scadrians. The same power that creates Allomancers. The Set scientists also mentioned that they used these spikes to actually make people into Allomancers, though only briefly for an undisclosed reason. (TLM CHP 47) I believe that reason is because of Identity. Because charging a spike is just like filling a Metalmind, Identity keys it to a specific individual, the one it came from. So in order to improve this method, you just have to find a way to Blank the identity of either the 'Donors' or perhaps just the receiver. Most likely the former. There exist several ways to accomplish this through F-Alumnum though the man issue is actually having your donor's willing Blank their Identity. Ettmetal charged with F-Aluminum might provide a way to forcibly Blank other people's Identity though that is just speculation. So that's how you create a power-granting Spike out of normal people, but I'm not stopping there, Hemalurgy can only grant you so many powers because your soul can only accept so many Spikes but what if there was a way around that? What if you could permanently intergrate the Spike to grant yourself the power in a deeper way? What if you tried to Compound Hemalurgy with Allomancy? It works for Feruchemy so there exists a precendent. So let's dive in. First, you'd need the previous steps, stab a bunch of muggle Scadrians while Blanking their Identity to make an Unkeyed Spike. Then, assuming it's made of Nicrosil, acquire an Electrum spike that grants A-Nicrosil, then Burn the Unkeyed Spike. If it works the same way as A-F Compounding, then it's possible that you'd be granted additional power, gaining more allomantic potency than what was in the Unkeyed Spike, potentially turning you into a Mistborn straight off like Lerasium. Though I'm going to be assuming that you will just integrate the extra Preservation into yourself, granting yourself a single Allomantic ability, probably a random one. This method, if it works like I think it does, would prove superior than just spiking yourself for 2 reasons: 1: You would have the ability without the spike, meaning the power can no longer be removed from you as it exists fully within your soul, while also closing the 'hemalurgic hole' in it to avoid the Flaw of being controlled, enabling you to have more powers without opening yourself up to external control. 2: It would allow you to overcome the 'cap' on the powers you can be granted from Hemalurgy, since in Era 2 if too many spikes are added to a soul, it stop's gaining powers, this method could allow you to circumvent this by fully integrating the power into your soul. Do this enough times, barring unforeseen consequences of this method, and you could become a Mistborn without killing anyone or becoming a Steel Inquisitor. However it's incredibly likely that this method would be extremely painful. But though I feel my reasoning is sound, this is just a theory. A BOOK THEORY! Thanks for reading.
  4. There was a WoB brought up by @..... recently that said you can Hemalurgically excise Hemalurgically granted powers; The "technically" part could be interpreted multiple ways, including the idea that you'd just reuse the spike on someone else, but for the sake of discussion let's assume Brandon meant that you can really charge a new spike with an old one. This is Interesting because it opens some new possibilities. For one, I think you could use this mechanic to Blank previously made Hemalurgic spikes; you grant F-aluminum to the Hemalurgist donor (via Hemalurgy) and have them Blank their Identity and that of the spikes they bear while charging the new one, creating a freshly Blanked spike. It also might be a way to combine the charges of other spikes, as you could give a person multiple spikes, have them Blank their Identity and then spike both charges out at once (or do them one at a time), repeating the process to make a single, far more powerful spike (there would probably be some extra loss with each transfer, but if you're recycling spikes I think the process could potentially be worth it). Then there's the idea that the Investiture taken from the Spiritwebs held in the spikes would cause less damage to the donor (the new one, not the original donor) since they aren't part of the donor's actual Spiritweb, meaning that you could realistically expect to do this more than a few times. The Emperor's Soul spoilers;
  5. So, I have been roleplaying a gold savant over in the Alleyverse forums (which if you like roleplaying and haven’t checked out, you totally should look at!), and I had to fudge some things. We have really only had two instances of A-gold in the books, and information on what exactly goes on is very conflicted (see the differences in the Ars Arcanum wording and the Coppermind wording). So, that got me thinking: how does A-gold work? Now, we have very little to go off of. But, let’s start with the basics. Gold is a temporal metal that shows you two alternate versions of yourself when burning it. Past that, it gets weird. These alternate selves don’t seem to be able to interact with you in any meaningful way, and don’t really exist. Now, you can sort of interact with them, as we saw with Vin reaching out to touch her gold shadow. Now, she also seemed to be controlling the shadows, in a way. Here’s a section from the book (chapter 27 for any of you keeping track): So there’s something weird there. The user also thinks through both thoughts, and intrinsically knows them. They can’t seem to communicate, but maybe they can see each other, given the whole touching thing that goes on in book one. It is very unclear. They also seem to no longer have their physical self anymore, as both of the instances seem to refer to splitting into two and being two people, not three. Do I have any idea how that would work if you are burning it for more that 15 seconds? Nope! But that’s what we have to work with Now that we sorta kinda get how the shadows manifest, let’s talk about the shadows themselves. In the two instances we see them, the shadows appear to be alternative present selves, like if you were to essence stamp yourself. Now, here’s where things get inconsistent. The Ars Arcanum seems to suggest that you see your, and I quote, “past selves or alternate present selves” which, given the wording, seems to imply that you can either see an alternate present self or an unaltered past self. But given that that would be really rusting weird, let’s just say you can access alternate selves. Whether or not they can be younger than you are is kind of unclear (I seem to be repeating myself quite a bit). So what of these alternate selves? Could they be anything? Theoretically, but with the stuff we have seen, they seem to be opposites of each other in some way, and seem to be very relevant to the moment. Vin saw a noble and a thief, Miles saw a vanisher and a lawman. Now, both of these people were very inexperienced with gold, so I’m sure you can stretch the capability of your shadows past just differences in currently relevant occupations. So, now that we’re sort of on the same page about what A-gold does, let’s unravel it a bit. Specifically, I will be looking at this from a lens of Intent, Identity, and Fortune, the three weirdest mechanics in the Cosmere. Starting with Intent. Could you be conscously aware of what shadows want to summon, or where they manifest positionally to you? Would you have the ability to move the shadows independently of yourself, or have three or one self (either just you physically present and seeing out of your own eyes or your two gold shadows and you) present? I would say with savanthood, anything is possible, but to what degree could a normal Augur that isn’t ashamed of their very existence pull that off? I don’t know. On to Identity. I think this is probably more relevant than Intent, as who you are affects what your shadows could be. If you are sure of who you are, the shadows would likely be less variable than if you feel that you are the way you are now due to pure happenstance. To take that a step further, let’s put F-Aluminum into the mix. What happens when an augur stores identity? Personally, I think it would increase the variability of the shadows. Maybe one of them wasn’t even born an Augur! Now what would happen if they have access to an unsealed identitymind? Well, then they could increase their identity. What would that do to the shadows? If storing increases variability, tapping would decrease variability. Eventually, maybe gold shadows wouldn’t even appear! The possibilities are interesting for sure. Now on to the last one: Fortune. Why do I bring this up? This is all about the past. Well, in a way, it’s about the future. The gold shadows seem to show people what they need to see, but what if you burn it for more than 15 seconds? What if you shadow up a fighter because you will be getting into a fight? This is certainly an interesting question. Personally, I think it is certainly plausible. Gold is really weird, and who chooses the shadows certainly isn’t the one burning the metal. Well, what are you folks thoughts? Is there more potential with being an Augur than just getting nausea on command? Could you manipulate this realmic power to your own desires?
  6. Warning: This post contains a single Stormlight 5 prologue spoiler, masked, and potentially significant spoilers should these theories prove accurate. Reading the prologue for Stormlight 5 first is recommended. Just as the Stormfather provides Stormlight and surgebinding powers to all of Honor's children, Ba-Ado-Mishram (BAM) became the Voidmother proving Voidlight and voidbinding powers to all of Odium's children, all of her Singers, during the False Desolation. One BAM to Connect them all One BAM aligned them One BAM to draw them all And with her Voidlight bind them One gem severs the whole One gem divides them One gem rips away souls And then the darkness finds them In the Land of Roshar Where the Singers die And Listeners live We'll explore much relevant history leading up to and beyond BAM's imprisonment (see Coppermind's BAM and False Desolation articles for supporting canon references) and theories explaining the magical science behind what happened with BAM, her Singers, and related events. BAM-SINGER CONNECTION HISTORY The lead up to and fall out from BAM's gemstone capture includes: Long, long ago, Odium unmakes 9 spren who fight during many desolations in which BAM serves as highprincess and commander of Odium's forces, The last desolation comes where all but Taln survive, Taln holds Odium and his Fused on Braize all by himself (spanning a total of 4500 years), During the long imprisonment of Odium and the Fused, BAM somehow gains the ability to pull Voidlight into the Physical Realm and to Connect herself with all the Singers of Roshar, a feat previously only managed by Odium, making herself a little god (RoW 847-848), Even though Odium and the Fused are still trapped on Braize, BAM's newfound powers give her the ability to provide Singers with forms of power including all the Regal forms plus stormform, which allows BAM to wage war against the Knights Radiant during the False Desolation, with no end in sight, The Listeners, tired of endless war and manipulation from both Odium and Honor, "cast off everything - including our very forms - to find freedom," which severs their Connection to BAM (RoW 159), Honor's long, slow death begins around this time, The Knights Radiant form a special Strike Team to imprison BAM inside a gemstone in order to end the False Desolation, Because BAM is a little god and holds strong Connection to the spren and souls of every Singer in Roshar except the Listeners, these tethered souls and spren get sucked along their Connection to BAM, ripping out pieces of their souls, removing both their Identity and Connection, and possible damaging or destroying their gemhearts in the ripping process, Somehow even Honor and Cultivation's spren and the Sibling get damaged by BAM's imprisonment, though to a much smaller degree that perhaps signals a much smaller Connection between the Voidmother and "all who belong to Roshar," affecting the Sibling's abilities to make Towerlight and crippling Urithiru (RoW 621), Close to dying, Honor cannot help the Sibling, Urithiru, or the Knights Radiant, The Battle for Feverstone Keep begins before BAM's imprisonment since the enemy still pushes for that ground and parshmen are anything but pushy (OB 809), BAM's imprisonment, if during the Battle for Feverstone Keep, would have caused all fighting Singers to experience excruciating pain and then simultaneously transform into docile, mindless parshmen, All Singers Connected to BAM become parshmen through a break in Identity and Connection; only the Listeners escape because of their previously broken Connections to her, Hundreds of Windrunners and Stonewards at Feverstone Keep become the first to abandon their oaths en masse as Honor says, "they are the first" (OB 547), Two thousand years later, the Everstorm travels to Roshar through the Cognitive Realm and is brought through to the physical realm, and The Everstorm restores both Identity and Connection by repairing the Singers’ souls and possibly their gemhearts. SCIENCE-MAGIC THEORY BEHIND CONNECTION, CAPTURING SPREN, AND THE SINGERS' SOULS From Newton, we know: Force = mass * acceleration From Jasnah (OB 1179), we know that "concentrated Stormlight has a faint mass to it." So the more we accelerate the physical mass of the Stormlight, the stronger the physical force we have acting on the Stormlight and anything Connected to and by the Stormlight. How do we move or accelerate Stormlight? Navani's lecture on fabrial mechanics includes details on sucking Light into a gemstone in order to trap a spren inside a gemstone. We first lure a spren into close proximity to a gemstone with something it likes (e.g., flames for flamespren) and by using the type of gemstone it prefers (RoW epigraphs, Chapter 1). Interestingly, we already know the type of gemstones preferred by each Order of Knights Radiant (and each associated herald). Moash's knife had a large sapphire gemstone hilt that gave a subdued glow after capturing Jezrien's spren-soul (OB 1205), which makes me wonder if the gemstone in Leshwi's spear (RoW 80) that drained Kaladin's Stormlight and nearly sucked out his soul (RoW 101) was sapphire, as well. The first questions we must ask ourselves would be 1) what would BAM be attracted to and 2) what kind of gemstone would she prefer? To answer the second, maybe the Voidmother would prefer a heliodor, as the Stormfather would. As for the first question, she appears to like war and commanding, and she has shown particular interest in Feverstone Keep (OB 809). One might imagine Melishi, the False Desolation's Bondsmith, and her Strike Team showing up at the Battle for Feverston Keep with a large and perfect (or nearly perfect) heliodor gemstone, knowing that BAM would be nearby commanding her troops and in search of something in the area that interested her. Navani's next stages in capturing a spren (RoW epigraphs, Chapters 2-5) would be filling the gemstone to around 70% full of Stormlight (Voidlight in BAM's case) and then quickly sucking that Stormlight out to create a vacuum that will suck in a nearby spren. Suppose you take a brown paper lunch sack and suck the air out. It collapses, right? The same would be true of a Ziploc bag. By collapsing to reduce the volume, the bag equalizes the pressure. But what about something that has a rigid structure like a gemstone, especially a gemstone that doesn't leak? If you suck all the air out of a glass, for example, you'd suction that glass to your face since you've created a vacuum of extremely low pressure. Because air and Light will always seek the lowest pressure possible, they'll get sucked into a vacuum until the pressure outside of the gem roughly equals the pressure inside the gem. Since volume is inversely proportional to pressure, the larger the gemstone, the lower the pressure (where the lower pressure goes the stronger the vacuum becomes). And finally, the tighter the seal, the less a gemstone will leak and the stronger the vacuum will be. So large, perfect gemstones make the perfect traps for these gods. At this point, you might be asking yourself, how does the spren gets sucked in along with the Stormlight? That's where Connection comes in. When the Stormfather gives Stormlight to his children - his spren and his surgebinders - an invisible cord of Stormlight will Connect that spren or that Radiant to the Stormfather. The same can be said for the Voidmother's children - BAM's spren and her Singers: they're all Connected to their mother by a physical force from the Voidlight she provides. Let's say you have a massive gemstone and a larkin quickly sucking a ton of Light out of your stone. The gemstone will quest out seeking to replace all or almost all of the light it just lost with a powerful force. Once it captures a nearby Stormlight Connection cord, the spren will be drawn in along with the Stormlight the spren is tethered to. Yes, the Connection is mostly spiritual, but there is a small physical Connection, too (because the Stormlight Connecting them has a small mass, as Jasnah said, and mass * acceleration is force, as Newton said). If we yank hard enough on that tether, the spren cannot help but be pulled in. We see this with spren pulled into fabrials, yes, but also with human and Singer souls, tethered to their home planet by their Connection to the Investiture there. We saw Jezrien's spren-soul sucked into Moash's sapphire knife and Kaladin's soul nearly sucked into Leshwi's gemstone-capped spear, both of which had metal that specifically draws in Stormlight including the Stormlight cords of Connection. Let me digress for a smidge to explain that Identity and souls are nearly synonymous. For instance, the Fused (where each Fused is the soul of one ancient Singer fuzed together forever to a surgebinding spren, granting surgebinding powers and immortality) maintain their Identities - and most of their intellect, knowledge, and memories - even though they constantly lose the rest of their bodies because Identity is stored in the soul. Connection for the traditional Singer bond appears to be stored in their gemhearts since that is where their spren and probably their souls reside. Now I said all that to say this: this, this, this is how Singers' souls were ripped away, how their Identity and Connection were stolen, and how they became mindless parshman slaves, by having parts of their souls that were tethered to their Voidmother ripped free, likely destroying their gemstones in the process, as BAM and all her many Connections were sucked into her gemstone prison. With Singer souls damaged, they were not quite soulless and mindless nothings but nearly so. And with Singer gemhearts damaged or destroyed, the parshmen lost their abilities to bond any other spren or to hear the rhythms of Roshar inside their gemhearts. The Listeners were spared, maintaining their Identity and their abilities to Connect with other spren because they had previously severed their Connections to BAM before her imprisonment. TRAVEL & WORLDHOPPING We'd be remiss if, while we're here with Connection, we didn't speculate on travel and worldhopping. Connection tethers Invested individuals to their home planet, not letting them escape lest they rip out part of their souls, their Identity, and destroy their Connection. But of course there is a way around this problem, a way out, because this is Sanderson, after all. The remainder of the post includes a little speculation about how off-world travel may be possible based on what we know of Connection above and a single spoiler from the Knights of Wind and Truth prologue that gives a bit more detail regarding the quote above. Reading the prologue for Stormlight 5 first is recommended. I've kept all non-Stormlight cosmere spoilers out of this post.
  7. We know that certain things in the cosmere can be accomplished by several magic systems (such as A-Electrum and aviars both allowing you to see your immediate future), and I think there may be a way to soul forge without using stamps. First, you need to be a A-Gold and F-Aluminum twinborn. Then when you burn gold, it's said to be a very disorienting experience because you not only see your alternate lives but you even think their thoughts. It might be a bit of a stretch to some, but to me, it sounds like, for a moment, you are your alternate lives. This means that you can theoretically store your identity while burning gold. You might need a different metal mind for each identity, kind of like you do for tin, but that's an easy problem to solve. Then if you're ever in a situation where you need the skills or abilities of your alternate life, you can tap that memory and essentially use an essence mark on yourself to access that skill. It's not quite the same as an essence mark because none of your physical attribute change, but it's fairly close, in my opinion. It's also limited to only two alternates, but it's probably easier to do than create an essence mark. So what do you guys think? Could this combo work? Also, to make the power less niche do you think storing your identity would grant access to different alternate lives? This would add to the skills this person could draw on, but I'm not sure if it would work that way. Or would storing identity do other weird things to your gold shadows?
  8. Just something that struck me while I was designing a magic system for my Mercy world on the Combined Shard names thread. let's say there is an Aluminum Ferring on Nalthis that has a lot of Breaths, called Joe Breath-Haver. If Joe so chooses, he can store away his Identity and then Awaken something, so that anyone who knows can take the Breaths from the Awakened Construct. There exists also on Nalthis a Friend of Joe's, called Bob Stealsalot. Bob is very Realmatically knowledgeable and knows what Joe is doing. So Bob, who would like some Breaths, asks Joe to prove that he can create Awakened Constructs in a way so anyone can retrieve the Breaths. Joe obliges, but before he can Awaken anything, Bob slaps him in the face and says "Your Breath to mine". Since Joe's Breaths are currently Identitiless, they obey Bob's Command and all go to him. Bob then runs away cackling, having just committed literal Identity theft. Is there anything stopping this from actually happening?
  9. Okay, so I was just wondering, what would happen if a two Feruchemists were to store all their memories in a unsealed copperminds and then switch copperminds and tap all of the other person's memories? Would you become that person in a new body? Could someone keep doing this to effectively be immortal?
  10. In The Lost Metal, Marsh states that Identity contamination prevents the Set from compounding. I wonder, then, if you could overcome this limitation by having the donor blank their Identity via Unsealed Aluminumminds, or via a Hemalurigc spike. This also makes me wonder why it is that Marsh can compound, even though he doesn't (presumably) have Identityless spikes. Did Hemalurgic spikes just permeate the Spiriweb more in Ancient times, and now the spikes are more "contained" within their separate Identities? I know that we have the Ars. Arcanum, but I'm just curious about the mechanics of Hemalurgy's change, and how they can be overcome by a clever individual (not that I personally claim to be such an individual, just a curious one).
  11. Hello! So, I'm back again with another hairbraned theory with little to no evidence to back it up. But, it sure would be cool if it were true. At the very end of the Ars Arcanum of RoW, we get an interesting quote about an entity named Foil that lives in an ocean and wants control of the aethers. When RoW came out, the identity of this being was unknown. Then Tress was released and we got introduced to a fun dragon named Xisis. Xisis lives at the bottom of the Crimson sea and studies, you guessed it, the aethers. This implies that they're the same. This is only circumstantial evidence, of course, but it seems to me like a pretty strong connection. A quick search of Coppermind and Arcanum didn't reveal anything, so I'm asking for thoughts. Do you think that Foil and Xisis are the same? Is there any evidence I've overlooked? Please tell me your point of view.
  12. Kandra Blessings and their creation have been elusive for a while now, but I have another educated hypothesis as to how it's done. We know that the Lord Ruler personally created the Kandra Blessings. We also know that a few of the fundamental differences between Hemalurgic spikes made for Koloss and spikes made for Kandra is the amount of Investiture pulled from the donor and what specific segments are taken. We also know from Bleeder that it is possible for a Kandra to create new spikes for themselves to replace their old Blessings, otherwise Bleeder wouldn't have been able to use a Trellium spike. And we know from TLM that Commands can be used when using Hemalurgy to be more specific in what is taken and what is not. With that evidence in mind, my current idea for how Kandra Blessings are made is that TLR would use Commands to take larger than average sections of the Spiritweb of the donors for the Kandra Blessings, including more of the part that specifically makes humans... human (in fact, I think that something similar happened with the Chimera that Bleeder made; she spiked some canines, took a large portion of their innate "self", and spiked that into humans, creating a bigger change than what would have normally been possible with a single spike). True sapience and higher cognitive functions. As this was done, the Identity of the spikes was somehow Blanked, or at least made to be more adaptable to its host. When the spikes were given to a Mistwraith, they granted them sapience by altering them to be more humanlike in nature. The spikes would then "grow" into the Kandra, becoming a fundamental part of their Identity, which explains why ReLuur couldn't take another Kandra's spike without both of his; the Identity of the spikes weren't compatible with each other, so they caused him pain. This also makes sense if we look at Bleeder; she was able to make two spikes, one that provided Feruchemical steel, and the other that provided Allomantic steel, neither of which she should have been able to bear unless they were Identity compatible with her. Bleeder's case also proves that it isn't just the Kandra growing into the Identity of the spikes, since that would mean that she couldn't have created new spikes for herself, as their Identity wouldn't have been compatible with hers. There are some other very interesting implications for Hemalurgy if this proves true, but I'll make another post sometime for those ideas as this post is specifically for Kandra Blessings. In any case, I'd love to hear what all of you guys think. If anyone has solid evidence that disproves this hypothesis, I'll gladly listen, as I'd rather have this idea of mine be wrong than have a false head cannon. That said, if you do try to disprove it, I'm sure I'll defend my point if I reasonably can, cause it's fun Edit: Oh, and it may be worth noting that it isn't really the amount of Investiture in the spikes that matters too much, it's what is taken in them. Otherwise, enough Breaths would do the job of bringing them sapience.
  13. Okay, so Compounding isn't normally possible via Hemalurgy due to Identity contamination; so long as the Identity of the Hemalurgic spike and that other power (whether it be another spike or a natural Metalborn power) aren't the same. But what if you Forge someone into a Misting for a certain metal, Hemalurgically spike the power from them, use Forgery to turn them into a Ferring for the same kind of metal as they were a Misting for, spike that power out, and then you give them both spikes afterward. Would they be able to Compound since both spikes technically work from the same person? Or, what if you instead give the spikes to someone else? Would they be able to Compound since the spikes share the same Identity, and even though the Hemalurgist's Identity is there to muddy things up, it does so equally to both. So would that still work? Honestly, Forgery and Hemalurgy just go so well together.
  14. I had come up with an idea before on how a Trueself Ferring could blank their Identity while having their power taken Hemalurgically, which would blank the Identity of the spike. The power could be given to other Metalborn, who in turn could blank their Identity to make Compounding and combining Invested charges a viable option with those spikes. This would require that you have willing donors, however, as you can't reliably force someone you're stealing a power from to blank their Identity. I'm now wondering if perhaps I've been overthinking the problem. If you gave a Hemalurgic spike that provided access to Feruchemical aluminum to a Hemalurgist, they could blank their Identity (and that of their spikes, presumably) to make Compounding possible for as long as they blanked their Identity- it wouldn't matter if the spike had an Identity tied to it, since you could blank it anyway. This wouldn't make it possible to stack Investiture in a single spike (no supercharged Hemalurgy ) and you'd need an additional spike to make the Compounding viable (a legitimate concern when you're dealing with a max of three, maybe four or five spikes if you don't mind Shardic intervention), but without the need of a willing donor, this feels like it would be a much more achievable solution to the problem of Compounding via Hemalurgy. I suppose you could upgrade this if you had multiple people working together; a natural Misting (say, a gold Misting) or someone willing to take another Hemalurgic spike could take the Feruchemical side of what they wanted to Compound and Feruchemical aluminum, then they could blank their Identity and Compound large stores of the desired attribute. Since the attribute is now Identity-free, the Hemalurgist's buddies could access those stores for their own use (only one Compounder is needed for the group assuming that you aren't going to be needing a constant intake of whatever power you're using).
  15. I recently made another thread on how one might be able to use specific Rhythms of Invested powers to program the Investiture and make that power usable for things like Feruchemy (although TLM shows Unkeyed Dor, which works just fine for any Invested power, so this strategy of programming isn't all that useful). However, I now wonder if it would be possible to take a Hemalurgic spike powered by non-Metalborn and use a combination of Rhythms emitted by Invested powers and Intent to program the spike to have the power you want. My thinking of how someone would go about creating Hemalurgic power spikes from non-Metalborn currently looks something like this. 1. Use Hemalurgy to take an Invested charge from a person. A. Make sure to either give the donor access to F-aluminum (via Hemalurgy or Unsealed Metalmind) to blank their Identity while you harvest their Innate Investiture (so that it can be combined with other donor's Investiture; Identity contamination is a real thorn in the side if not handled properly) or give the donor access to F-gold (with lots of stores saved ahead of time) to replace lost Spiritweb fragments. Identity-blanked Spiritweb fragments may also be more susceptible to being programmed (as a Feruchemist blanking Identity is susceptible to "all kinds of things"), so even if you provide them with F-gold you may also want to give them F-aluminum anyway. B. Also, make sure the spike is made of the right kind of metal to properly channel the Investiture (i.e., if you plan to program it with A-pewter, use a steel spike for physical Allomancy), otherwise you'll end up with the same kind of situation if you alloyed an Invested Metalmind into another type of metal (Investiture is there, but can't be accessed). 2. After sufficiently charging the spike, use Navani's method of changing an Investiture's Tone but instead learn and use the Rhythm (the pulse that A-bronze can sense) of the Invested power you want the spike to have. A. Might have to be a very skilled Seeker to achieve the necessary insight. It might also help to travel to Roshar and Hemalurgically take Connection from a Singer, but that may not be strictly necessary. 3. Now that the spike has been charged and exposed (with Intent) to the Rhythm of the power you desire, it should change its function to grant the power you want.
  16. I had a thought about Hemalurgy. What if you Hemalurgically transferred the Healing power of a Bloodmaker back to themselves, and they use previously stored health to repair the damage. After that, you give the spike to another individual. Since the Hemalurgic spike contains a portion of the original Bloodmaker's spiritweb, which includes some of their Identity and Connection, would both Bloodmakers have a kind of spiritual Bond between them? It would be pretty interesting to see if they could use some form of telepathy, or at least have some kind of awareness of each other. This doesn't actually seem that unreasonable to me, as we see something like this in SA. RoW spoiler. It would be pretty cool to see Wax and Wayne do this, as they would be an even more powerful duo than before, and I could totally envision Wayne saying to Wax, "look mate, just poke me with the needle real quick like, and then you can grow fingers back too!" or something.
  17. Aluminum Feruchemy is particularly interesting to me since identity stores all of a persons attributes, connections, and investiture. If utilized like soothing or rioting it could potentially be used to enhance desired attributes, connections, and investiture of the feruchemist. I also speculate that an AA twin might be able to absorb identity from others since all that investiture needs to go somewhere when they burn it, and based on how it works feruchemically I wonder if it just doesn't store the identities of the metals out of reach when burned, but perhaps not for a twin. Hemalugically Aluminum blanks investiture which could be related Identity as well. So an AA twin might also act sumwhat like Peter or Silar in Heros, storing or copying parts of identity from others into their own Identity. We see something like this produced with Forgery. They could also potentially use full blown hemalurgy without the debilitating effects through mix and matching parts of Identity. Even the use of forgery on an AA twin could potentially be a means of adding additional types of investiture permanently. Yes I know this is just speculation, but what do you think?
  18. How would you try to fix the Slave-Form Parshmen with their broken Identity and Connection, without the Everstorm or releasing Ba-Ado-Misram? Anything besides Divine Intervention goes. I'm curious.
  19. An Unsealed Metalmind can be used by anyone who touches it, is aware of what it is, and uses Intent to activate it. However if you wanted to create a Metalmind that could grant a power only to someone else, I have an idea. Give the person in question an Unsealed Metalmind that allows them to store Identity. You then blank your own Identity while tapping theirs when you create the new Metalmind, hopefully encrypting it with their Identity so that only they can use it. Assuming that you can't tap someone else's Identitmind, you could instead use Hemalurgy to spike off a piece of their Identity, then blank blank your own Identity while not blanking theirs while creating the Unsealed Metalmind. This has more problems than the previous idea, as you would need to heal them from the damaged of the spiking, and we don't even know if a Hemalurgist can selectively store only one of their spikes Identity and ignore their own. However, I thought to cover all avenues, just in case.
  20. In Feruchemy, there is a certain amount of Investiture that you can store in a piece of metal, but it is not linear .This means that physical size of the container is not everything. If it were, any increase in mass of the Metalmind would equally increase the amount of Investiture that could be stored. So, this seems to mean that the Cognitive or Spiritual aspects could be even more important than the physical aspect, which makes sense since Investiture is mostly Spiritual in it's composition, so that's where most of the "mass" of the Investiture would be stored. I would suggest then that it may be possible to increase the amount of Investiture that could be stored inside a Metalmind without increasing it's physical size either by expanding it's Spiritual aspect, or by manipulating it's Identity, which is the trait that defines the Spiritual borders of an object or entity.
  21. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that Identity and Connection have a closer relation to one another than other attributes? Hemalurgic duralumin is the only non-godmetal to take more than one attribute, which are Identity and Connection. Slaveform is created when a Singer has no Connection or Identity, and both the Connection and Identity of Singers was taken when Ba-Ado-Mishram was captured. Bonds made with Spren are related not just to Connection, but also Identity. These two attributes seem to be very, very closely related, and affecting one seems to usually have some affect on the other. Why is that? Is Identity formed by what Connections you have? Are they attached to the same part of the Spiritweb, explaining why Hemalurgic duralumin can take both? I'd love it if someone could please give me their take on this, and confirm that I'm not some crazed lunatic jumping at something with no relevance.
  22. When Nightblood destroys something or someone, it basically consumes everything that they are made of, physically, cognitively, and spiritually, and converts it into Investiture that acts as more of Nightblood itself, hence the reason it's so powerful. But what if someone could trick Nightblood into thinking that they were already a part of it? Nightblood is so Invested that it cannot hold all of the Investiture that it has consumed, so it constantly leaks when unsheathed. So what you would want to do is use Raysium to capture some of this cast off power. Then, you create a blanked Aluminummind. Next, you create a Hybrid Investiture that uses Nightblood's Investiture and the Investiture from your blanked Aluminummind and store the resulting Investiture back inside the Aluminummind. Finally, when you draw Nightblood next, you would blank your own Identity while tapping the Identity from the "Nightmind", and hopefully that would make Nightblood consider you a part of itself enough to not consume you. Anyway, hopefully this would work and not leave you like Rayse, which would be terribly unfortunate.
  23. If two Trueself Ferrings were to store there Identity within the same Aluminummind, would anyone who then tapped it gain an Identity that was a combination of the two Ferrings, or would they sense two separate pools of Investiture, each one granting the Identity of one of the Ferrings?
  24. Your Identity acts as a barrier that separates your Spiritweb from the outside influences, and it's been stated by Brandon Sanderson that if you were to remove your Identity that you would be more susceptible to outside influence. So, if you could perhaps non-lethally spike out a person's Identity, and then give them a Duralumin spike containing a Hemalurgic charge taken from a person or creature you want your patient to physically resemble, maybe you could use this as a method of changing someone's body to appear different or have different abilities, but only need one spike to accomplish this as their Identity would not interfere with any physical transformation that would occur.
  25. It is my current understanding that a Bond is essentially a Connection between to entities that also utilizes Identity somehow. So, if you were to spike someone Hemalurgically with a duralumin spike, split the spike into two pieces, then implant a half in two different people, would the two people have a Bond since they now have a shared Connection and at least some overlapping Identity?
