  1. I was rereading Warbreaker today and came by this: Since I've read White Sand just a few days ago it did tickle my brain if the white and black sands Hoid used could be from Taldain. It's nothing big but it could be an easter egg like Mraize's white sand bottle, since we have got that also before the graphic novel release. I just thought to share it to see what you guys think and if someone managed to get Brandon to answer in a signing or something if it's actual Taldain sand or just some other regular sand. Oh and also, how does Life Sense permit someone to sense the minds of objects wanting to be Awakened? Vivenna metions often how she can feel the objects wanting to be alive again, besides peoples presence. Thats why I think it is Life Sense that does that. What are your thoughts?
  2. So... The other day I was poring over the coppermind... And I saw one of hoid's lines in WoK. This one: “ Nonsense. Balderdash. Figgldygrak. Isn't it odd that gibberish words are often the sounds of other words, cut up and dismembered, then stitched into something like them—yet wholly unlike them at the same time? “I wonder if you could do that to a man. Pull him apart, emotion by emotion, bit by bit, bloody chunk by bloody chunk. Then combine them back together into something else, like a Dysian Aimian. If you do put a man together like that, Dalinar, be sure to name him Gibberish, after me. Or perhaps Gibletish. ” — Hoid to Dalinar (after namedropping Adonalsium) So... The upshot is... Considering he just brought up Adolnasium, does it seem to anyone else that Hoid is in fact talking about recombining the sixteen into a single deity again? I mean, pulling adolnasium apart is likely a reference to the shattering... But Hoid implies some kind of reconstitution of adolnasium following this. The resultant being would be different from the original adolnasium, but whole again... Is this, perhaps, Hoid's agenda? EDIT: Also, I can actually see Sanderson naming the resultant deity "gibberish". It would be in the same vein of humor as the second era Scadrial novel's "high imperial" language.
  3. Hello! This theory have been in my mind for a very long time.ing First question: Who is Hoid? He is a Worldhopper from Yolen that is pursued by 17th Shard organisation. He also isn't a Shard, he has been present when Adonalsium was shattered, there are a couple of Hoids so it is kinda complicated, he uses magic systems from Scadrial, Yolen or Roshar, Naltis, he tried to become Elantrian. There is a very important part: HOID LOVES BACON Second question: What do we know about Yolen? There are Dragons and two other sentient races. First 16 Shardholders were from Yolen. Third question: What do we know about Dragons? Nothing (or I just don't know). I think he might be a Dragon, we don't know how the Dragons look. Humans look like humans probably. Coppermind says that Dragons can take human forms. What about "Small anatomical diffrences?" His hair is white, only old people have them, he is old, but he looks very well. I would say he is about 30. So what do you think of it. Is it possible? Please, help me to find out it.
  4. I bet everyone here wonders how Hoid has lived for as long as he has (considering we have seen (read?) him in Mistborn era one and Mistborn era two. I've seen how people think there are two Hoids, Hoid the Elder and Hoid the Younger (Always makes me think of Pliny), but what if Hoid the Younger was a Kandra? It should be possible, a world-hopping Kandra, and also Kandra are immortal. We've seen how a kandra can take out one of it's spike and thus hide themselves from Harmony/Ruin(era1), so what if this Hoid took out 1 spike just before going into the Cognitive Realm and returning the spike afterwards to regain sentience? I don't think Harmony would be able to sense a kandra a shardworld away. Perhaps Hoid the elder, straight outta Yolen, came to Scadrial and met a young Kandra lad and somehow they became friends, but Hoid the elder dies after some world hopping adventures, and Hoid the younger consumes Hoid the elder and takes on Hoid's mantle, continuing his legacy? This Hoid must have went to Roshar, and then returned for Mistborn era 2 where we see him occasionally. What do you guys think?
  5. So I was thinking about the Horneater pools and "Luna'aiki," or Hoid. And then I read the ending of the tenth anniversary of Elantris, which has a bonus ending of Hoid talking to a dark Aon and at the end, he jumped into the pool that dissolves Elantrians and disappeared. So, I thought that Worldhoppers may use "pools" to travel worlds. The pool for Roshar is the Horneater pools, the pool for Sel is the human-dissolving pool, the pool for Luthadel is an obscure reference in Shadows of Self. During one of the newspaper clippings, there was a story about a man who got lost and found a pool in a forest. By the side of it was a twisted creature with a big, ornate mask. I believe this was either a Worldhopper or one of the people form the South from Bands of Mourning. So, am I being stupid? Or could this possibly be correct?
  6. From the Houston signing thread. This got me thinking... If I'm at all in any way right - and you don't want to think about how it all ends. DON'T READ FURTHER! Of course - I'm probably not right though! Theory: I propose this last chapter mentioned in the WoB quote above is (at least partially) the story that Wit and Kaladin concoct while Kaladin is in prison in WoR. (sorry?). I realize that it may be connected to the epigraphs also(and/or) but consider how Hoid and Kaladin's story fits within the larger framework: Words of Radiance p. 730 and Words of Radiance p. 730, 731 and most convincing for me: Words of Radiance p. 731 I think this has to do with beating the everstorm through strength of will, belief and perseverance, and self-sacrifice. Or maybe Wit is just talking about other cosmere stories we have seen (or will see ). Chances are excellent that I am 100% wrong and I freely admit that and actually wouldn't mind a bit if that turns out to be the case. This just seemed kinda like it might fit as an ending... Thoughts? Disagreements? Other ideas? *hides*
  7. Spoilers for original Mistborn trilogy, Elantris, Warbreaker, Stormlight Archive, Word of Brandon. So, we know that there are at least two Hoids/Hoiden/Hoidypodes/Hoidypeople/Hoides, Hoid the Elder, who is not Wit, and Hoid the Younger, who is Wit. So, what if Hoid is an acronym for Head Of Information Department? In Mistborn, Hoid is an informant, one who deals in information. In Warbreaker, Hoid is a storyteller, one who deals in information. In Well of Ascension, Hoid leads the Terris refuges after the loss of their Keepers, thus taking the place of those who dealt in information. In Elantris, a Hoid is a beggar covered in bandages, and accompanied by a younger beggar. In Mistborn: The Final Empire, a Hoid is Kelsier's Informant. This Hoid is implied to be short (he is first seen sitting in a doorway, but then he "climbed to his feet-though that didn't make him much taller"). He is also, in the next sentence, called "the scrawny bald man". This is, in my opinion, Hoid the Elder, and not Wit. Wit is described as "thin" and "tall". Considering how Vasher was only slightly taller than usual at the rescue of Nanrovah's daughter, and that no change of height was mentioned in any of Denth's disguises or his return to his true form at death, and given that lightweaving is essentially hologram-making, it seems doubtful that one can change one's height via illusion or disguise in the Cosmere (though, perhaps with lightweaving, you could make the top part of you invisible and project an image of a short person below that...). This Hoid is assumed by Kelsier to be Skaa, while the Hoid of Well of Ascension passes for Terris. In Warbreaker, Hoid is the white-haired, bearded one recognizable as Wit, but in previous sanderson works he seems to be described differently. Now, we know from Word of Brandon that Wit-Hoid is in every Cosmere book. Assuming he is somewhere in The Final Empire, and that he is the younger beggar in Elantris, this Hoid the Younger can be the Terris-looking leader of the refuges, and can be every Hoid after that. So, I distinguish the short, bald, skaa-looking Hoid from the early Cosmere from the tall, white-haired and bearded, terris-looking Hoid of the later Cosmere. Interestingly, this places the death of the original Head Of Information Department at the attack on Terris by the Inquisitors, the loss of the Keepers (the Information Department, essentially). It seems fitting for Hoid the Elder, informant, to die with the greatest group of information-gatherers, the end of an era. This leaves Wit to take up the mantle and lead the survivors, inheriting the title of his old master, thus, becoming Hoid. Thoughts? (This is my first theory)
  8. Okay, here's a weird theory. There is a Jordancon WOB saying that Adonalsium is like a big spren. So, Adonalsium could be a spren, then somebody could bond with Adonalsium. I don't know who, but I would suggest Hoid since he seems to regret something and if he bonded with Adonalsium, he might be responsible for his shattering. Also, Hoid seems to be involved with everything. But, it could be anybody. My theory is, whoever bonded Adonalsium betrayed him, and that resulted in the shattering of Adonalsium.
  9. Hi guys. I know that it's probably just a coincidence but I want to share with you a curiosity about the name "Hoid". I and a friend of mine (my only Cosmere's confindent in real life) ofter joke about this thing... until He telled me "but did you shared this thing with the forum ?" So here I am: "Hoid" spelled backwards becomes "Dioh". In Italian, the word "dio" means the English's "god" and the "h" is often (with some exception) a letter without a sound. I know that probably is just some kind of coincidence and that name came from another person (our Hoid's master) but knowing how Sanderson hides things and plays with the names (Adonai= god in Hebrew, Adonalsium= anagram for "A mind a Soul") maybe this oddity with Hoid is wanted.. or in the end I hope you may find at least interesting :-)
  10. Something interesting hit me on my recent reading of Elantris. Why is Hoid mentioned here at all? Prior to the 10th Anniversary edition, we had no real understanding of why he was meddling on Sel, save that he was apparently known as a street beggar for at least 10 years. What else happened 10 years prior to the events of this book? The Shaod. The Reod. AonDor stops working the way it should. The chasm appeared in Arelon. We know that this earthquake that caused the chasm line was the result of some kind of "unnatural occurance," meaning that something "meddled" with something (we don't know what) in Arelon. Also: The chasm, which occurred only 10 years prior, along with the Shaod/Reod, was not the result of Odium's visit to Sel, which would have taken place hundreds of years prior to the events of the book. Hoid seems to have been hanging out on the streets of Kae for 10 years. Things with Elantris went downhill 10 years ago. An oddly specific coincidence, no? In the postscript of the 10th Anniversary edition of Elantris: My theory summarized: Hoid, in his attempt to become an Elantrian, caused the Shaod/Reod (whether on purpose or by accident, I do not know). Once his mess is resolved, or perhaps once he sees that his plan did not work out the way he thought it would,
  11. 1| page 1050 of the original WoR Kindle edition Kaladin arrives in Uruthiru with Szeth's Honorblade. As far as I know this scene is the last we see of the Honorblade. I am assuming Kaladin left the Honorblade with Dalinar which then leads me to the interesting tidbit - when the Stone Shamans learn of Szeth's "death" how will they go about recovering the Honorblade from Dalinar? Szeth mentioned at some point (forgot to mark the spot) that his people were not worried about recovering the blade after his death. Could this be a significant conflict in the coming third book? Will the Shin send powerful warriors wielding the other Honorblades? Silent assassins? Proto-radiants of some kind? 2| page 976 of the original WoR Kindle edition "Kaladin stood in the rain. “Do you know where the King’s Wit is?” “That fool, Dust? Not here, blessedly. Why?”" This scene is Kaladin speaking to Zahel while Kaladin is recovering from his injuries and wrestling with his conscience over the plot against Elhokar. Note how Zahel (Vasher) refers to Hoid as "Dust". Hoid and Vasher seem to have met in the past. The name "Dust" seems full of meaning but I cannot really think of what that meaning might be in relation to Nalthis or Roshar. Thoughts?
  12. A very kind 17th sharder (shout out to ParadoxSpren) exposed me to some really interesting information to my theory of Hoid causing the Shaod/Reod that has me thinking about Hoid's meddling in the cosmere. ParadoxSpren directed me to some WoB which give some interesting information about Hoid’s involvement on Sel from the following Words of Brandon: So, a group of storytellers went around Arelon telling everyone about the Elantrians and their magic. As time went on, they collected stories and histories of the people in the land and passed this information along through scholarship. It seems Hoid was involved on Sel long before the events of the book Elantris. Aon Ene represents “wit,” which is a name Hoid uses on Roshar. (as an aside, “Ene” is a palindrome, symmetrical and possibly even Vorin in nature). Following this clue to Roshar, we find that another group similar to the Enefels, known as the Worldsingers, which engaged in very similar behaviors, with whom Hoid has interacted: On Scadrial, the Worldbringers were spiritual leaders of the Terris people, using their copperminds to store information about the past including histories, philosophies, and religions. For some reason, the Lord Ruler felt it necessary to destroy this group – hunting down their successors the Keepers (see The Well of Ascension Chapter 4). An admin on 17th Shard said that the similarities between the names of Worldbringers and Worldsingers was not a coincidence, so we could assume Hoid had involvement on Scadrial prior to the events of the first Mistborn Trilogy too. On Nathlis, we see Hoid as a storyteller with information about the history of the nations of Idris and Hallandren (Warbreaker chapter 32), though whether or not he was the influence behind a guild of storytellers or not is not revealed. My point is this: Why would Hoid invest (pun intented) so much of his time and resources in making sure that humans on these shardworlds were aware of past histories and stories? Perhaps as a way to promote awareness of the shards' existence? I wonder if this was one of his first "intervention" strategies following the shattering. Perhaps this led to some of the chaos that the second letter references: It seems to me that Hoid was originally dedicated to encouraging humans on various planets to be aware of stories of the past, of histories, of the magic that existed. Perhaps this was his first attempt at intervening in the cosmere, but because it didn't accomplish what he wanted it to (or because of the chaos it caused), his plans have changed. Now, it seems like he's more directly involved in things, l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶c̶a̶u̶s̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶S̶h̶a̶o̶d̶/̶R̶a̶o̶d,or taking the bead of Lerasium, or involving himself with the Knights Radiant on Roshar. What are your thoughts?
  13. The reason Elantris stopped working properly was because the shape of the land, meaning the shape of the aon on which Elantris was patterned, had changed. This obviously speaks to a very intentional design of the city of Elantris, one focused on a specific pattern. The city is obviously much older than we know (or even the people of Raoden's time know), but how old, and where did it come from? This idea of a city laid out in a specific way sparked a connection in my mind to the Dawncities on Roshar. They too had interesting, intricate patterns to them, and the cites were believed to be very, very old. I wonder, did the same group of people who built Elantris on Sel also happen to build/influence the Dawncities on Roshar?
  14. Hey all! So I had the chance to ask Brandon about Felt the potential Worldhopper (A quick search showed that the forum already has some speculation on him and can summarize where he appears pretty well there: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/51918-felt-the-worldhopper/ TLDR: Venture Cheif Spy in Mistborn Final Empire & Scout in Dalinar's army in Words of Radiance). Well, I had the chance to ask him about Felt at his Q&A at JordanCon and he confirmed that they were the same character! At his signing, I talked to him a bit more about it and he mentioned a couple other things about him: He mentioned that he's "been around." When I asked if I could find him in other books, Brandon responded, "You can try." Um... challenge accepted. I'm taking this to mean he's going by other names. Any ideas? He also said that if you read what he says in Mistborn - it contains some interesting tidbits. He specifically said it wasn't a huge deal, but he said it could be interesting to people. I think I've read the scene with him 4 times since he told me this less than 24 hours ago, and I'm not quite seeing anything between the lines. Anyone else want to take a whack at it? Yay! New Worldhoppers!
  15. I first thought this up after re-reading Way of Kings again. There’s a scene where Wit is talking to Kaladin, and says, in reference to names, “I’ve many...I began life as a thought, a concept, words on a page. That was another thing I stole. Myself. Another time, I was named for a rock.” Nothing very telling about this, but it got me thinking, what if he was being literal about this. What if he wasn’t born human. This could explain both his longevity, but also his immunity to Shardblades. It is my theory that Shardblades (dead ones) destroy Investiture, which is the power to manipulate souls in such a way that they influence the Physical Realm. A person’s Investiture is also their “soul”, and damaging/removing it has the effect of draining the person of life. This is evident on Nalthis where, giving up your Breath, the form that Investiture takes on that planet, leaves a person as a Drab, colorless, susceptible to disease, and lethargic. It is interesting to note that people who are injured by a Shardblade, but not killed, have the injured limb become pale, useless, and very much Drab-like. Based on this, I propose that Hoid does not have Investiture, therefore, making him immune to Shardblades. If that’s the case, how does he have “access to all the magic systems,” as established by Words of Brandon? We’ve seen evidence of Lightweaving, Perfect Pitch, Allomancy, and so forth. I propose that he is not using Investiture to gain these effects. There may be another magic system, one that can mimic the abilities of Investiture, but is different enough to render one immune to it’s power, unless that power is used in a pure form. This also answers such questions of how the 16 were able to destroy Adonalsium and why Odium was able to destroy other Sharholders without, himself, being destroyed. As seen with Ruin and Preservation, when one Shardholder tries to destroy another, they, themselves, are destroyed in the process. If, however, one had access to another power, one that didn’t feel the backlash that would come from attacking another Shard, it makes more sense. Anyway, these are just some of my musings, as I contemplate the cosmere. Let me know if I'm totally wrong with this.
  16. Just had a random thought that turned into this theory that Hoid caused the "plague" in the Purelake. Why were the 17th Sharders looking for Hoid in the Purelake? Because he left a trail for them to follow him there, and theoretically uses the Purelake to worldhop. What caused the plague (Common cold) that was reported in the Purelake? A worldhopper traveling through. (see paraphrased signing report below) Who is the likely suspect? Hoid, since he likes to gather investiture. How did Hoid get sick? He went to Ashyn to try to study their form of magic. http://stormfather.tumblr.com/post/108812172073 Weiry asked: whether the plague on the purelake has anything to do with the fact that the magic fish form symbiotic bonds with spren? no worldhoppers brought a disease to Roshar that they didnt have before its the common cold. rosharans investiture makes it so they’re usually a healthy bunch so something like the cold is kind of frightening "its a plague of the sniffles”
  17. Hi All, First theory (YAY!) so let's dig in. I'm very much obsessed with Hoid. What is he doing on the Shardworlds, what does he want, what's his ties to the current (and past) shardholders and what Investiture does he hold. I'll start off with what I've discovered in my readings and then run into my theory. Note: My theory is central to the Chronology of the Cosmere and knowledge of all Cosmere books. As I mentioned, this theory is based on documentation from all books so careful for spoilers for all Cosmere books. On that note, I'm just going to spoiler tag the whole post Thanks for reading, I know this was fairly long. Let me know your thoughts
  18. I am new to Cosmere Theory, so please bear with a question that many will probably consider simple. I am unfortunately on very limited time frame, so I can't dig into all of the theories out there. -What is the possibility that Hoid is actually the sliver of Adonalsium? The main reasons that I am wondering this, is due to the fact that he doesn't hold a shard currently, and then all of the strange stuff that he says in Way of Kings about being torn apart and having a former name. “ Nonsense. Or perhaps Gibletish.” — Hoid to Dalinar (after name-dropping Adonalsium) “ I've abandoned my real name. But when next we meet, I'll think of a clever one for you to call me. Until then, Wit will suffice—or if you must, you may call me Hoid. ” — Hoid to Dalinar “ I began life as a thought, a concept, words on a page. That was another thing I stole. Myself. Another time, I was named for a rock.” “A pretty one, I hope.” “A beautiful one,” the man said. “And one that became completely worthless for my wearing it. ” — Hoid to Kaladin Other related questions: -Since Sanderson has his Masters in Creative Writing and works as a professor at BYU, I wonder if the entire cosmere is an exploration of how postmodern thought might work with a Mormon worldview. If we, as human beings, create reality with our own perceptions, and then we killed our concept of god, when god is meant to create offspring to populate the universe (as my limited hearsay understanding of Mormonism leads me to understand), how would it all work out? Would that God actually die, à la Nietzsche, or would only a part of him die as in a part of his power and authority over his world, while leaving his individuality intact? “Authority doesn't come from a rank.," Kaladin said, fingering the spheres in his pocket. "Where does it come from?" "From the men who give it to you. That's the only way to get it.” ― Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings This is also partially supported by the fact that the cognitive realm is so important, and that the thoughts of men (and their concept of honor) play such an integral part of controlling and limiting the powers of Odium. -I know that Adonalsium was said to have been killed by the original 16 vessels, but is it possible that his death was actually was faked (or the idea of him was slain in the cognitive realm) and Andonalsium fled into a body when his powers were stolen from him? -How would you go about destroying a god with the powers of all 16 shards unless you destroyed the thought of him in the cognitive realm and forced him to take a bodily form. -Could it be that the rock that Hoid was originally named for was actually the world that Adonalsium inhabited? Or could this be related to Harmony's comments about the power being the power of the rocks etc. (I couldn't remember the exact quote from Mistborn Seceret History). -Is Hoid a storyteller, because he is working to retell his own story; as in, he is the ultimate Lightweaver, and he is using his stories and machinations to try to eventually put himself back together in the mind's of all of the peoples of the Cosmere -And finally, is Hoid collecting the investures of each shard in the hope of regaining himself eventually? I appreciate any thoughts on these questions, they have been bugging me for days now.
  19. Compared to what we have seen of the other shards, Rayse is the only one that we have seen to be a terrible person pre-shattering, and why would the other shards want to do this with such a terrible person? So I was wondering if Hoid was originally going to be the sixteenth shard and Rayse took his place. This could be why Hoid hates him so much.
  20. Right now, as far as I have found, we know that there are several world-hoppers. So I was wondering how they get around. I have not found anywhere on the forums where this topic is discussed, so I decided it would be best if I made one. As I see it, there are about four ways that World-Hoppers could be getting around. The first would be some manner of FTL. I have seen this theory put out there, however I have yet to see any world with a way of making that happen. Also, Hoid’s travel seems to be instantaneous. The second would be some sort of world-gate. This theory implies that each world has a way of getting to it, from every other world. I do not know how likely this is. In WoR there are Oathgates, which allow anyone on Roshar to get to Urithiru. I see no reason why these could not reach across solar systems, if powered by enough Stormlight. However, how one would even find the planets to put them on is beyond me. And the third theory that I have is that the teleportation is connected to shards. On every world that there is a shard, there is a means of getting there. Maybe the shards have enough power to move people? Can you hijack a shards power enough to do this? This theory has more questions then answers. My final theory is that it is all wrapped around Hoid. This means we are back to square one. Hoid is still doing stuff we have no idea how he is doing, and other people are just riding his coattails. I would love to hear any theories I have missed, as well as any ideas on the theories I have put forth. This is my first topic, so feel free to correct my mistakes, and shatter my fragile ego.
  21. Hey Everyone, I'm new to the forum and I was looking for a topic on Hoid's identity. Specifically, him being a shard. If anyone could direct me towards that topic that would be awesome. If there isn't one I'll start one myself. Really excited to be on the forum though!
  22. There will be some Mistborn and Stormlight talk here, so beware. We've got some WoBs on Hoid, mentioning that he knows where to be thanks to feruchemy. But how though? Feruchemy itself has two things that might do it, storing Luck with Chromium or perhaps mental speed with Zinc. But that seems easy. Let's get really tinfoily with it. Assumptions 1) Hoid has Feruchemical abilties - We have the above report about this, but that's just one source. Nothing confirmed from novels as of yet. 2) Hoid has Allomantic abilities - This is speculation based on the scene in WoR where Shallan see's him putting something in his drink. Not confirmed, but seems like a nod from Brandon. Whether this is from the lerasium, or another means, isn't relevant right now. All the Compounding we know works by storing a trait with Feruchemy, and burning it with Allomancy, and getting a giant boost out of the Feruchemical power (i.e. gold compounding causes massive healing, and atium compouding grants youth). The reverse works (i.e. burning a metal with Allomancy, and storing/enhancing it with Feruchemy to get a massive amount) as confirmed/discussed here. Hoid could be doing that with Electrum to see a massive amount of his personal future, seeing where he will be, and inferring where to go. TL;DR Hoid is reverse compouding electrum to be a super-oracle EDIT: I posted a reply down below with more info, specifically about Electrum's power. The Ars Arcanum from Alloy of law says "Reveals Your Own Future". In the detailed section, it says "Oracle Mistings burn electrum to see a vision of possible paths their future could take. This is usually limited to a few seconds." This seems again, to be far different from what Vin/Elend were using it for, and could present a large opportunity for use with enough electrum.
  23. The two “Letters” between Hoid and Frost raise questions about the nature of Frost’s participation in the conspiracy that Shattered Adonalsium. Frost clearly had some role in the Shattering: “Is not the destruction we have wrought enough?” “Our interference so far has brought nothing but pain.” “[Rayse] is what we made him to be, old friend.” Brandon has strongly suggested but never confirmed that Frost is not a Vessel for a Shard. Unless there’s something peculiar about dragons, becoming a Shard’s Vessel should have vaporized his body. Yet he’s still an “old reptile.” WoB (# 124) also says that Frost is “functionally” immortal “meaning he doesn’t age but can be killed.” This phrasing suggests that Frost lacks the degree of self-healing capacity that Hoid himself has: Hoid can grow a new head if he were beheaded and is very difficult to kill (WoB). But the First Letter states “as you are now essentially immortal, I would guess that wellness on your part is something of a given.” This suggests that Frost “now” has sufficient self-healing capacity to be illness-free if not violence free. This new capacity seems to have arisen in connection with the Shattering. My speculation: 1. Because Frost and Hoid are the two oldest Cosmere characters – and presumably had the greatest knowledge of Adonalsium – they knew things the sixteen Vessels didn’t know. I speculate that they advised the sixteen HOW to Shatter Adonalsium. Maybe they designed the “weapon” that killed him. Neither wanted to become a Vessel himself. 2. Rayse and Bavadin may have persuaded Hoid to help, who then sought out Frost. That would explain why Hoid is so angry at them, “perpetuating [his] grudge” against them. Hoid may feel they betrayed him, especially after Rayse killed Skai and Aona. (And Tanavast “bought drinks” for Hoid once…one of my favorite lines in SLA.) 3. Frost OTOH seems to feel guilt over his participation more than anything else. Now he languishes on Yolen, bound by his nonintervention oath. 4. It’s possible the “price” the Vessels paid Frost for his help was his “functional” immortality. Perhaps that’s also how Hoid acquired his spectacular Feruchemical ability, as his price. These would have been "paid" after the conspirators ascended. 5. I suspect Frost’s involvement with the Seventeenth Shard is simply as a provider of information. Once Khriss discovered him (and maybe Yolen), he filled in her historical knowledge. I doubt he’s an active member, though he appears in ongoing communication with them (or at least Hoid thinks so). Rank speculation is so much fun! Thoughts?
  24. There have been several recent threads discussing Hoid and his motivations. This led me to wade through the almost 200 WoBs on the Theoryland site to see what Brandon had to say about his “favorite” character (as of 2009, according to # 38 of the linked page). Here’s a collection of some of the more provocative WoBs by listed number on the linked page. Use this post as a resource for your own theorizing. If you’re aware of more recent Hoid WoBs, please add them to the list. Below I try to weave these WoBs into some semi-coherent speculations…I wouldn’t glorify my maunderings by calling them a “theory.” Hoid WoBs 23: “Hoid, so far, has only moved forward in time. He has not 'lived' all of those years, but has used some time dilation techniques. That said, he is far older (both in relative and real time) than a normal person can live.” 25: “[A]rt is a magical thing in the world of Warbreaker. When an artist creates a work of art, part of the artist's soul ends up in the artwork… As Lightsong has a splinter of divine nature inside him, he is able to interpret the paintings—to foresee, using them, and to see into the soul of the person who made them.” Doesn’t pertain to Hoid, but interesting nonetheless. 31: Hoid “may be capable of a little bit of foreseeing of certain events, not what’s going to happen, but he may need to be in a certain place in a certain time.” 32: "Hoid as a major part of things doesn’t really show up till the third Mistborn trilogy, which is the outer space Mistborn, the sci-fi Mistborn." 34: “There's just the one system in Warbreaker, and it's also a world with only one Shard on it.” Again, interesting for its own sake, especially given our speculation about Nalt and Trell. At the January 6, 2015 Firelight signing, Brandon said “There was at least one relationship” like “brother and sister or child/parent” among the original Vessels. Nalt and Trell may be the brothers if they turn out to be Vessels. Alternatively, maybe Skai was Aona’s parent, explaining his control over access to the Dor. What a terrible pun that would be (keeping a child away from the “door”) … 66: Confirming Hoid uses Feruchemy to know where to be at any given time. 78: A pre-M:SH acknowledgement that “Hoid and Kelsier do not get along. At all.” [As of April 2013.] 85: Hoid has a “home base.” I've not seen anything that suggests where it is. 91: Hoid is familiar with “very many [magic systems], and lots that you haven't seen yet” as of November 2012. 95: Hoid has “been alive since Dragonsteel. However, he may not have spent all of that time awake and alert.” 112: Question: “If Hoid were tempted by a Shard, which one would it be?” Brandon: “Endowment.” 124: Frost is a male dragon who is “[f]unctionally [immortal], meaning he doesn't age but can be killed.” 127: Khriss is the most Cosmere-aware person “by a long shot,” though Hoid is marginally more knowledgeable than Nazh. I would have guessed that Frost would be more Cosmere-aware than Khriss, based on the Second Letter, unless Brandon forgot about Frost when he answered this (in March 2014). 128: If beheaded, Hoid can grow a new head. “[W]hat Hoid does heals the soul.” 142: “Frost is almost certainly the oldest [Cosmere character] by a small amount. After that, Hoid.” This statement does give new meaning to Hoid’s and Frost’s mutually applied appellation, “old friend.” 149: “Hoid was human a long time ago. Now... It's complicated. We would call him human, and so will pretty much everyone else, but he is not exactly that.” 151: Hoid was on Roshar before WoK. This may not mean much, since he was the King’s Wit to Elokhar since before the book begins. 157: Duralumin helps with using local magic systems by changing user’s Connections to that planet. 160: Hoid was once friends with Odium. 161: The famous “sing-song” “biggest RAFO” to the question whether Hoid ever visited Braize. 162: Hoid asked Dalinar about Adonalsium to test whether Dalinar was a member of some secret society like Gavilar had been; Dalinar seemed to know so much. Hoid apparently thought that Gavilar had “confided” this knowledge to Dalinar, based on what Gavilar had learned from those societies. Since Brandon used the plural “secret societies,” the statement implies that several of the societies – and not just the Ghostbloods – have back-story knowledge. 163: Hoid shows up in so many books because he’s searching for “something.” 166: Hoid is “really scared of Odium” and many other things. 167: The Moon Sceptre is important to Hoid for unknown reasons. 168: Hoid doesn't “yet” have the abilities of each world he visits. 173: Question: “Hoid said [in Warbreaker] that he learned stories from a place where gods have died. Is that Roshar?” Brandon: “RAFO. I will say this. A god has died on Roshar. Only one, that we know. So, ‘gods’ would not be plural.” 174: The Seventeenth Shard has goals that Hoid may interfere with – which is why they hunt him. Hoid’s actions are at “cross-purposes” with their goals. But the Seventeenth Shard has other goals too, “something grander than that.” There are others whom the Seventeenth Shard is worried about. 179: Hoid stole the lerasium bead to gain “certain powers,” but Brandon is unclear whether Hoid has ingested it yet. Forum consensus is that Hoid used emotional Allomancy on Shallan during one of her WoR interludes. That suggests Hoid did use the lerasium bead sometime before that scene. 190: Hoid has “powers that predate the Shattering of Adonalsium. Not all of his powers predate, but he does have powers that predate.” We know about Lightweaving, but this statement makes clear Hoid had other powers pre-Shattering as well. 193: Question: “Worldbringers and Worldsingers - similar mission?” Brandon: “The similarity of the names is intentional.” Question: “Similar origin?” Brandon: “Yes.” Question: “Did Hoid start them?” Brandon: “That’s a RAFO. That’s a RAFO, but definitely they have a similar origin.” Speculations 1. Hoid’s Feruchemy. Hoid became a Feruchemist at birth or by some other means while still on Yolen. When Ruin and Preservation created humans on Scadrial, IMO they also created Feruchemists based on the Yolen model. Adonalsium certainly would have had the same ability as the two Shards to create a “push-pull” magic system. Perhaps Worldsingers was the name for Feruchemists on Yolen. Hoid might even have given the name “Worldbringers” to the Scadrial version. Given Hoid’s remarkable ability to use the Fortune attribute (we speculate) and to live as long as he apparently has, the Scadrian version may be considerably watered down from the original Yolish version. Questioner: How is a new Feruchemist made? Brandon: Other than through birth? ... That’s a RAFO … Right now, as far as anyone knows, it’s by birth only. But – Well, we’ll leave it there. [From the 2/25/16 Austin Calamity signing.] This would explain Hoid’s moving forward in time (“so far”), though he was not always “alert and awake” his entire lifetime. He did not “live all of those years,” instead using “time dilation techniques.” During his quiescent periods, he might have been accumulating health and time attributes to use for both healing and his time jumps. 2. Is Hoid a Feruchemical Savant? Hoid appears human, once was human, but now isn’t. “It’s complicated.” One possibility is that Hoid may be a Feruchemical Savant who has overused Feruchemy. “eing a Savant is when you burn so much it alters your spirit.” [March 29, 2014 SLC Signing Report, # 4.] Much like a Surgebinder or Elantrian is no longer completely human, a Feruchemical Savant may not be either. This might partly explain Hoid’s exceptional longevity, even as he “zones out” from time to time. Brandon confirms Savantism is possible in other magic systems than Allomancy, in the following exchange from the March 20, 2014 McLean, Virginia Signing Report, #2: IronCaf: In what ways is the process of becoming an allomantic savant like body building or other exercise? Brandon: [Paraphrasing] That is not an inapt metaphor for it. It's like a wedge gets in the soul and cracks it, and investiture can fill it up. IronCaf: And using allomancy breaks it further? Brandon: Yes. IronCaf: Do other magic systems in the Cosmere function in a similar way? Brandon: Yes. IronCaf: Which ones? Will we see them soon? Brandon: I'm going to have to RAFO that. This may be the reason that Hoid, like twinborn Miles in AoL, can lose his head but immediately regrow it. He can heal soul damage. (Hoid is like Miles in the sense that he can survive severe head injuries if he has adequate available investiture.) Hoid also may use his some of his acquired magical abilities to fill his metalminds (or their Yolish equivalents – I don’t recall seeing Hoid with metal bands or rings on his body) in much the same way twinborns do through compounding. That might explain how Hoid became a Savant, putting vast amounts of investiture into his storage device which he then flares. 3. Hoid’s Age. One gets the sense that the “old friends” Frost and Hoid were childhood pals, since Frost is older than Hoid only “by a small amount.” They are both older than any other “character,” which presumably includes the Vessels. That gives perspective to both Frost’s desire for non-intervention (as stated in the Second Letter) – he has a VERY long view – and Hoid’s “interfering” attitude toward the Shattering (as stated by Leras in M:SH). ASIDE: In M:SH, Khriss describes the Vessels’ “diverse motives” for “kill[ing] Adonalsium, ripping it apart and dividing its essence between them…” [Ed. Note: shouldn’t it be “among” them, since there are more than two Vessels?] “Some wished for the power; others saw killing Adonalsium as the only good option left to them.” What does this latter motive mean? Was it personal to some individual Vessels, perhaps because their lives had turned out badly? Or does this phrase refer to something more generic, more terrible, as if a catastrophe was about to befall Yolen or their race, and Adonalsium intended to do nothing about it? A ripe area for further speculation… 4. Cosmere-Awareness. Why should Khriss be more Cosmere-aware “by a long shot” than either the long-lived Frost or Hoid? Because she is a scholar, she has learned more than these two “people” who actually lived the events she’s chronicling? This seems odd, especially since Frost has so much knowledge about current happenings in the Cosmere. 5. Where Gods Died. Hoid learned stories in a place where “gods have died.” We know Hoid learned storytelling on Yolen. Either more than one “god” died on Yolen or Hoid learned “stories” on Sel. When does The Emperor’s Soul take place relative to Warbreaker? Was Hoid on Sel multiple times (a possibility) or just when he stole the Moon Sceptre? 6. The “Biggest Speculation” - Hoid’s Search. Hoid is searching for “someTHING” – singular. IOW, it’s not just magical powers he’s after. This may or may not be the same “thing” the Seventeenth Shard is after. a. I see two possibilities. The more obvious is that he’s looking for something to defeat Odium with. Perhaps the “something” is the vestige of the “weapon” used to Shatter Adonalsium. Hoid may want to repair the weapon or model a new one on the old and splinter Odium with it. b. The second possibility is more intriguing. Assuming Brandon wasn’t trolling, to me the single most striking WoB on the list is that Hoid would choose Endowment as his Shard if he were “tempted.” Endowment – the Shard that raises the dead and Awakens inanimate objects. Many have speculated about Hoid’s purported desire to resurrect Adonalsium. They cite Hoid’s accumulation of magical abilities as if he wants to fuse them together into a new holistic Adonalsium. They find support in the following WoB from the 2/25/16 Austin signing (emphasis added): Q: If someone goes to every planet and get invested from every Shard, if he was invested enough would he become a new Shard? A: That’s an excellent question that I’m not going to answer…That's too deeply related to things that are happening in the Cosmere and I don’t want to dig into for a little while yet. I haven’t agreed with this speculation because, even if you could fuse together diverse magical abilities into the original one that Adonalsium exercised, that wouldn’t necessarily bring him back. IMO the foregoing WoB describes the Seventeenth Shard’s “grand” purpose, which Hoid is meddling with, not Hoid’s own purpose. It may even be the purpose of some of the other Worldhopping groups. (Other posters have already made this point.) BUT – Hoid is looking for someTHING, presumably something that will defeat and/or end his former friend Rayse/Odium. I’ve long maintained that killing a god means killing its mind, depriving the power of a mind to direct it, so it seeks new minds. What if Hoid seeks some remnant of Adonalsium’s mind – in one of Shadesmar’s glass beads - that Hoid can use his magical abilities to rebuild? We have the following WoB from the 2/25/16 Austin signing (emphasis added): Questioner: It feels like Roshar is-- has an essence, where it’s like a prism, you can see all the rest of them, due to the nature of the Cognitive Realm and the spren’s ideas, Cognitive things coming to light. Have I spent too much time looking at the Shard? Brandon: No, you are on the right path. Of all the things you noted, that one is the one that is perhaps the most important. Questioner: The prism idea. Brandon: The idea that Roshar is special and a key on Shadesmar. Brandon’s comment that Roshar is “special and a key on Shadesmar” may simply mean it is located between the Cognitive Realms of so many planets. The various “Expanses” seem to match up with other Shardworlds. Roshar’s Shadesmar is like the Grand Central Station of the Cognitive Realm. But he may mean something deeper. Shadesmar seems unique in one important respect: no single idea or object is represented there in anything resembling its Physical Realm counterpart. This is unlike the mist objects we’ve seen in Scadrial‘s Cognitive Realm. Instead, each glass bead in Shadesmar carries the blueprint of its object, rather than its shape. With the addition of Stormlight, each bead snaps onto other beads to form that object according to the blueprint. The WoR prologue gives examples. We know Adonalsium invested Roshar. Brandon tells us that Roshar is “heavily invested,” though we’ve seen little evidence to date of any more investment than anywhere else. Brandon also says that Adonalsium intentionally left bits of his power on Roshar that became self-aware splinters. What if Adonalsium also left a piece of his mind, stranded somewhere in a glass bead, waiting for the right magic to unlock and rebuild the Cognitive version of his body? With his mind recovered, Adonalsium could then begin to call his power back to him, stripping each of the Vessels of their Shard. Adonalsium could re-create himself. As wild, rampant, and almost totally unfounded speculation, this ranks right up there, even for me. But, hey, isn’t that the purpose of this Forum? Conclusion Enjoy the list of WoBs. Again, if you have any to add, please do so. Regards to all!
  25. I'm sure this has been done somewhere else at some point, but I'm not particularly cosmere-savvy at this point and I want to change that. It has recently come to my attention that there have been more appearances by worldhoppers than I had previously imagined. So this topic is so that I and the other uninitiated can be enlightened as to who these buggers are and where they show up. Here's who I have so far: Hoid (shows up everywhere) Khriss (shows up in Secret History, writes the Ars Arcanums?) Nazh (shows up with Khriss in Secret History) The Ire (also in Secret History, from Sel?) Galladon, Demoux, Guy I don't Remember (In WoK looking for Hoid) Now, basically all of these people except for Hoid are obviously shown to be worldhoppers where they appear, but apparently there are some that are hidden. So, is there anyone else? Where do they show up, and what do we know about them?
