  1. So I was checking up with my Deviant Art when I found this recent pic by Jazzy-Kandra (Please check out the link and tell him hi) http://www.deviantart.com/art/Melaan-621536006 When I saw it I instantly thought, "What if we were to write a story about the characters from Alloy of Law as if they were High School students attending a Elendel High School as normal students? Heck what if we did that with ANY of the Brandon Sanderson books!?!" Now I know this is probably not the first time someone has thought of this. I am reminded of the `Attack on Titan Junior High' series. Literally just using the characters in a completely different/more normal setting. But if there is anyone who fancies the idea, write a quick scene as how you would see the series. If you know of such a project that already exists, please leave a link so we can all check it out! I look forward to all the submissions, and when I can I'll write up one myself. Have fun!
  2. I was reading through the Words of Radiance reread on Tor.com, when I came to a line where it said that 'Brandon confirmed that the Wax and Wayne series occurs after SA5'. I had just finished rereading the Wax and Wayne series 2-3 days ago. And then it hit me like a load of bricks. Sazed is under assault by Trell and his minions who are trying to take down his planet. It was a sudden assault, and Sazed/Harmony is (as of Bands of Mourning) under a constant assault/pressure of some kind. Something he doesn't understand and that has just come recently. What if it's Odium - and what if it's because Odium is released from the Roshar system at the end of SA5. That somehow, someway, the bonds that Honour imposed on Odium, tying him down, are released at the end of SA5. Odium is cut loose, set free and goes to take on/take down Harmony. What do you guys think? Am I a truthwatcher, or just one of the ten fools?
  3. What was Harmony's distraction at the end of the Bands of Mourning? It's kind of odd to have a god not aware what he is distracted by. So far I have two ideas. First, he is having some inner conflict of Preservation and Ruin, who still slightly control his actions and are trying to separate. Second, perhaps TLR(or Kelsier) has taken a piece of him when they left from the grave. What do you guys think? is there something else I'm missing?
  4. If Odium was able to splinter a shard, just how powerful was he? Wouldn't saved be able to easily destroy Odium, since he is Preserving people and yet he is Ruining Odium, and thus the intents are in Harmony? Seriously, I have no idea and all y'all are smarter then me so I'm interested in what you have to say.
  5. So I was rereading the Wax/Harmony scene when a part stood out to me that I'm not sure how interpret; I think I'm reading Saze's first line right, which I believe refers to Ruin/Preservation but his second line is what baffles me. Is Saze referring to making the two Shards finally become one? Or perhaps making a play for other Shard's? Thoughts and ideas especially welcome
  6. Hi all, just trying to get my first theory out for critiques and thoughts! So, just finished Shadows of Self, and the big question is, what shard did that new metal come from? I've seen a lot of theories out there, but I am thoroughly convinced that it is not Odium as many have thought, but Autonomy working WITH Odium. And here's why: I believe for several reasons that the shard is not Odium Odium is very busy on Roshar as is. Odium is terrified of Harmony, so would not be likely to challenge him in person, especially not on Harmony's own world. However, he might send a friend to do the dirty work. Brandon has said that not only could Odium work with other shards, but that he likely has. Odium would be willing to work with others and probably has. Paalm's entire purpose is to set herself and everyone else free of Harmony's influence and control. If another shard was controlling her, it would logically follow that she would reject this control as well. Unless that shard was influencing her towards "freedom".... So, if it's not Odium, who else could it be? My thoughts point to none other than our friend Bavadin, holding the shard Autonomy. Why? Well, It seems that Rayse (Odium) and Bavadin may be working together. This theory is not hugely supported, but the writer of The Letter did mention them and his grudges against them respectively in the same sentence, pointing to the fact that they may have more connection than we know. A full theory as to why Rayse and Bavadin may be working together was posted by Spire and can be found here. Bavadin's shard is Autonomy, or "freedom from external control or influence; independence." This seems to be exactly what Paalm is fighting for the whole time. What other shard's influence could one who so clearly wants freedom have fallen under save freedom itself? Autonomy may be fighting for a world free from Shardic influence. Who else better to ally himself with then, than someone who is actively splintering shards? The biggest argument I have seen against Autonomy being the unknown shard is the creatures that Paalm creates through Hemalurgy, likely with the same metal that is in her. This seems to be against Autonomy's intent, taking away the people affected's freedom to choose. However, we know that human sentience on Scadrial comes directly from Preservation. I postulate that the Paalm's Hemalurgic use of Autonomy's metal in this case removes any part/influence of another shard from the person the Hemalurgy is used on. This thus would remove Preservation from them, taking away their sentience and reverting them to a primal, beast-like state. Brandon said that this shard is one we've already seen. Dominion, Devotion, and Honor have all been splintered, it isn't of Harmony, for reasons shown above I don't believe that it is Odium, Cultivation is hiding on Roshar, and Endowment seems content on Nalthis. This leaves only Autonomy. Thank you for reading my theory, any comments and responses will be appreciated!
  7. So this is the whole reason I joined this forum, before I let my ADHD take hold and got distracted. I would love to see a real-world copy of the Historica along the same lines as the secondary books JK Rowling wrote, ie. Magical Beasts and others. I enjoy the snippets of post-Catacendre history I've learned through the Era 2 books, but snippets only go so far. To be able to read a real copy of the book the characters learned all their history from would be extraordinary. Thoughts?
  8. We know that one of the functions of buring Lerasium is to make someone a Mistborn, and everything I've seen assumes Feruchemy can be gained in a similar way (so forgive me if someone else has already thought of this). What if Feruchemy is gained not through burning but through tapping? Perhaps Lerasium*, or an alloy or it, or some other (god) metal carries a Feruchemical charge which can be drawn by anyone on Scadrial, and which when drawn makes you a Feruchemist? Or perhaps, fitting even further with the nature of Feruchemy, just as burning Lerasium fits with the nature of Allomancy, it requires first a Feruchemist to store their Feruchemy in the metal. They are weakened in the short term (or permanently) in order to create a Feruchemist. Thoughts? *I realise that Feruchemy is the power of balance between Ruin and Preservation, and Lerasium is only Preservation... the reason I suggest here it might be only Lerasium is because Lerasium has the "rewrite Spiritual-DNA" ability. This is just a possibility, as is the possibility a "Sazedium" is the key... obviously I'm leaving the metal open here, and am more interested in the idea that a Feruchemist-wannabe has to tap something, rather than burn something to ascend.
  9. baby

    Pathism

I find it ironic that the religion which holds Sazed as god has a faith which leaves much to be interpreted by yourself, with only a few vague rules. This was the kind of religion that Sazed would immediately label untrue, and probably why he refuses to be worshipped.
  10. QF 10- The Scadrial Atium Rush The Discovery* As James W. Marshall placed down a log of wood, he stumbled backwards. His friend helped him move the log into place, but James tripped into the river. His friend laughed and reached forward to help James up. James ignored the hand and reached into the river to push him up. His hand touched something cold, with a metallic texture. Huh? He wondered. James looked down and saw a big bead of a dark purple metal. He pulled it out and examined it. “What’s that?” His friend asked, grabbing at it. “Hey, I found it,” James said. “It’s kinda pretty, ain’t it?” “Yeah, it is. What’s it?” “I ain’t know.” James put it in his bag. “Ain’t look like any metal I know.” “Sure it’s metal? Might be some trash or somethin’.” “Yeah, pretty sure. What ya thank it is? Atium, the lost metal?” James joked. “Nah, that’s ridiculous.” His friend shrugged. “Send it back to Elendel for analysis.” “Good idea,” James said, and later that day he sent it in a package back to the city. - The first of the many independent miners to come had a pan made of metal and an insane attitude. He believed the crazy reports that had gotten everywhere- that atium had been rediscovered. The miner sat down on the bank of the river and reached down. It took him under an hour to find the tiny bead he was searching for. It was beautiful. It was a violet shade and when he polished it off with a cloth, it glowed in the afternoon light. Or maybe that was just him. He pulled out one of the glass bottles he’d brought and dropped the bead in. “Atium,” he breathed out. It made a soft clink noise. “I found it.” - That night, as a larger group arrived and set up tents, a shadow crossed the camp. A person stood in the darkness. They were a scout for the larger group that was set to come. “Atium. Rediscovered at last. No way are we going to let these ‘independants’ gain a monopoly on such a vital resource.” The corporate’s scout said as they wrote the report from the cliff. “I think something needs to be done about this.” - The next day, the first immigrant was found dead in the river. The bead of atium he’d found the day before was missing. Rules And the signups are open! Welcome to QF10. The idea of a Scadrial game without allomancy came from Renegade's QF8. Signups will be closed on Sunday, September 27 (exact time to come). The writeup time will come soon as well. If you're on a mobile and can't change the color, write this PERSON WHO YOU ARE VOTING FOR[/color*], but get rid of the *s. I will try to keep a link to each cycle's writeup in my signature. And player list in the writeup. Now, happy murdering each other! *this may or may not be how the actual California Gold Rush started. Do not use this and substitute 'gold' for 'atium' for a history report. EDIT: I have switched the rules to the modified version.
  11. First ever thread!! Hopefully I can construct these thoughts properly. Though I warn you I will probably end up all over the place. SoS - I've just finished SoS and have seen some bits around about Bavadin's shards intent, Autonomy. It strikes me as pertinent that the identity of a shard has been released so close after finding out there is another likely god metal on Scadrial. I would guess that Autonomy/Bavadin is working with Oduim to splinter the shards to remove the interference of the shardholders from the Cosmere, including himself. As we've seen with Preservation Shards are not frightened to destroy themselves to ensure there intent is met. This fits with the Autonomy. Bleeder also had a fanatical belief she was freeing people from Harmony's interference. The god metal spike seen at the end of SoS had, I believe, bits of red rust on, I wonder if Autonomy and Odium are working together and this has corrupted his investiture, the rust the physical realms representation of this. I like the name Autonium Rust and ruin - WoB has said to look closer at the rust and ruin phrase closer. Ruin is obviously just ruin, but rust could represent a completely different shard. It could be everything I've written so far is wrong. Rust could represent a shard, pluck from the air, Decay maybe? Someone also mentioned on a post a while ago that BS had put a clue in his book regarding Trelagism and Trell was mentioned in SoS, Trell had a brother and his name was Nalt. Nalthis is the planet Endowment is. More overlapping Cosmere theology. Belief - My thoughts on the way Odium splinters Shards and the way shards are powered in a sense would be rooted in belief. One of BS best qualities as a writer is how he incorporates religion into the magic system, and how normal people can become figures or religious belief. Now what if the shards themselves are powered by belief, Bleeder tried to break free Elendel from Harmony's control, for the lack of a better word, but this also would have broken down the belief system and government as part of the plan. This would weaken Harmony and give Autonomy or Odium an opening to attack maybe? Not a great theory but could be plausible. Gateways and Stormlight - This is just a thought I've been having regarding the way magic interacts with different worlds. WoB is that when an allomancer burns a metal it is giving access to the power of the shards/creation, a gateway to access magic, each metal is a gateway to a certain power much in the same way that drawing an Aon accesses the Dor with a specific outcome, channeling the power for a specific purpose. On Nalthis each person has a breath to begin with, they are Endowed with a small part of the shard, much like the way life on Scadrial has both preservation and ruin in them. In Mistborn people are picked for there actions to become more, but as the powers come from both preservation and ruin it's not about good or bad actions but almost random, balanced. This is opposed by the investiture on Nalthis, where you have an innate breath at birth, a link to god, but you are Endowed with a divine breath if you are found deserving, dying to save someone. Each of these links or gateways can run out or be used up with The exception to the rule is Roshar, I think anyway. Spren are the gateway and stormlight is the power that is used. Does this mean that Roshar is the nexus for the power of creation as stormlight is freely available to all people, just most don't have the link to access it personally. Like I say these are mostly the ramblings of a madman, think I may have been spiked by BS to miss all points. Thoughts anyone?
  12. So there seem to be a lot of posts in this forum that are based on the assumption that Harmony arranged Lessie's death. Unless I missed something major, I'm not yet convinced that this is true. We are told that Harmony never took control of Lessie directly, but he did press her very hard to do something she didn't want to do. We are also told that Lessie was sent as a bodyguard and that her becoming a lover was not part of the plan. As far as I can tell we are never told that Harmony arranged Lessie's death. We know he wanted Wax to return to the city and that Lessie felt this would be bad for Wax. But it's a long jump to Harmony therefore arranging her death. Besides, how would he do it? Lessie wouldn't do it to herself and we know he didn't take control of her. Was he controlling Bloody Tan? Certainly not directly as Tan wasn't a hemalurgic construct. Communicating through a spike? Possibly, but it's not Harmony's style to help a mass murderer and Tan seemed to have the whole thing set up from the start. I suspect someone was helping him, but not Harmony. In addition, Wax doesn't think Harmony arranged the death. He explicitly says that he's furious at Harmony for sending a kandra to seduce him. He's also angry that was not told who Paalm was, but he does not even consider that Harmony murdered Lessie in the first place. Anyway if so, it was a rubbish plan. Lessie's death nearly drove Wax away from being a lawman. Yes it got him to Elendel but at the price of being unable/unwilling to fight. It was only the threat of immediate death for him and everyone around him that finally woke him up. I suspect we're being deliberately misled. Lessie refused to help get Wax to the city, at which point someone else (Trell maybe?) arranged her death. She believed Harmony had done it (or at least had allowed it to happen) when in fact he had no part in it. Thoughts? LJ.
  13. Honestly, I agree with Paalm. (No, not her methods. Do you think I'm insane?) I mean her goals. Harmony is being manipulative here. Though Sazed himself disagrees with what he has to do, I don't think he has the right. 'It's not my fault, it's the fault of the power I hold' is a lame excuse. I still think that if Paalm had been able to tone down the murder aspect of her plans, I would be on her side. (Again, I don't agree with the murder aspect. At all) She wasn't controlling the governor forever. Only recently. That type of connection takes time. (Or so I would assume). And his brother is corrupt. She was obviously not controlling him, as she killed him. And Harmony "strongly encouraged" her to cause Wax tragedy just because of his intent. So yeah. I'm not saying Paalm was right, but I'm also saying that maybe our protagonists aren't right in supporting Harmony either.
  14. I'm trying to put together a couple pieces about how much Harmony has been involved in Wayne's life and the demons that haunt him. Here are the pieces I'm fitting together at the moment: 1: Wayne killed the parents of a child many years ago. Wayne turns himself in to Wax following this and is unable to touch guns again afterwards without shaking. Initially I thought this may have been to build an aversion to guns, but I'm looking at it in light of the compassion Wayne now has for the child. 2: Wayne visits the child on a monthly basis to give her money, but also to reinforce the guilt he feels over the parents death. Wayne or Harmony don't want that pain to dissipate. Though it seems clear that Wayne is able to deal with the pain, it still hurts him. 3: Wayne meets the daughter of a scientist at the party when Wayne was impersonating another scientist who destroyed the woman's father's life. This resonated with Wayne and sparked an emotional connection between him and the woman since she reminds him of the daughter of the parents he killed. 4: At the end of the book, Wayne intends to invest in the daughter's research, which will push science forward. 5: Harmony has expressed an intent to have society progress technologically faster than it currently is. This feels to fall perfectly in line with that goal. 6: Harmony has already stated (through MeLaan) that He puts the pain where it can be handled (referring to Wax, but this feels like a general rule). No one of these steps feels particularly like Harmony is involved with Wayne and yet when looking at the whole picture, it seems likely to me that Harmony decided that the guilt of creating an orphan and never being able to make up for it was a pain Wayne could bear and he uses this to cause Wayne to invest in technological advancement with the money that he never spent from Alloy of Law. If someone would like to fill in the gaps with the direct quotes that these ideas are pulling from, or challenge the theory, I'd love to hear it.
  15. I don't know if someone already brought this up, but Wax's earring is a hermalurgic spoke, right? Hermalurgic spikes give powers of the metallic arts. Can anyone see Wax helping to resolve the plot by suddenly pulling a piece of metal, instead of pushing? Or maybe cloaking his allomancy with copper? A sudden burst of feruchemal speed would be cool.
  16. This is just a simple question. When Sazed became Harmony he healed Spook's burns and turned him into a mist born. Demoux had his scars from the Koloss attack, and it obsiouvsly didn't heal for it was we see him described in Way of Kings with those scars. I believe if he can change Spook's spiritual DNA, correct me if I'm wrong about that, he could heal scars. I also have this fan theory that the Set started out as a Cult to Spook.
  17. So the last week or two me and my good buddy(irl) Sirce Luckwielder have been having a discussion about Atium and how it is linked to the Lord Ruler's staying young. It led to some other discussions and I was wondering if any of what i suspect has been confirmed. Or maybe some of you who are smarter than I am can help credit or discredit this theory. I don't see how we will see Atium again at all and this is why. Atium was the physical manifestation of Ruin but it was either all used up to fight the Koloss or destroyed by Kelsier in the pits of Hathsin. He thinks that since Sazed has both shards there will still be Atium that will regrow. I disagree. Anyways, all of this discussion got me looking in to things that i haven't really cared about in the past (I'm a Roshar guy!) and I have firmed up in my conclusion that Ruin and Preservation no longer exist or are on the verge of no longer existing as two seperate shards. In The Emperor's Soul, Shai tries to teach Gaotona about the Physical, Spiritual, and Cognitive realm and she says this: All things exist in the three realms, Gaotona.... The Physical is what we feel, what is before us. The Cognitive is how an bject is viewed and how it views itself. The Spiritual Realm contains an object's soul- its essence- as well as the ways it is connected to the things and people around it.......Here is the point. The longer an object exists as a whole, and the longer it is seen in that state, the stronger its sense of complete identity becomes.. Do citizens of Scarial see Sazed as Ruin and Preservation? I do not believe so(my memory isn't perfect) They see him as Harmony. Sazed is seen as one entity, not to. So I believe that if the shards haven't already been merged, they are on their way. Anyways, I was wondering what people think about this theory. Sorry my post might seem all over the place, I have a hard time typing out the thoughts in my head. This is kind of new to me as I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about things on Scadrial, I've mostly kept to Roshar. So please forgive anything I might have misunderstood. Also, I'm sure when Sirce has a minute he can write our discussion better, he's a lot better with words than I am.
  18. Okay, so with a Word of Bradon, we know that there is a third god metal. So, Harmonium. What is it, what does it do? Obviously we can't know these questions until a book comes out, but I think we can make some guesses and extrapolate from prior knowledge that we have. One thing to note is that the other two god metals contained the name of the Shardholder, not the name of the Shard's Intent. If there is Ati-um and Leras-ium, why is this metal not called Sazed-ium? Is it due to him holding both Shard's, or is there actually multiple god metals that we will see? So, what do the metal(s) do, or more acurately, what ideas do we have for what it could be. I don't think that I am correct, but I could see them having to with Feruchemy. Maybe the god alloy and its alloy can force Feruchemists to store or tap their metalminds. Again, I am pretty sure that this is not correct, but I think it would be cool. What ideas do people have about Harmonium and possible Sazedium?
  19. I have thought about the second Mistborn trilogy which will be placed in a more modern day era, late 20th century tech. In that era we had begun with space travels, if so much in a race. I know Scadrial doesn't have a moon but they'll probably go to space somewhere in that time. As we know that will require very high techonlogy and knowledge of physics. I suppose Scadrial would have become very Cosmere knowing. There would need to be a reason to go to space (satellites, space race or maybe knowledge of other planets). They would probably be able to calculate a lot of stuff about space and maybe even get the knowledge of how the Cosmere began (probably not why Adonalsium shattered, it's a magical event and I have no idea how those affects general physics). What I think I'm trying to say is that the second Mistborn trilogy would have the ability to reveal a lot about the Cosmere (but will probably not because I suppose Brandon wants to wait with that to the third trilogy or SA part 2 or Dragonsteel). Change of topic: Does anyone know if Harmony or the people of AoL are aware of what they could come to be doing with Scadrial, in climate terms? When they start notice it it would probably be sometime after even the third Mistborn trilogy, the population of Elendel is about 4,8 million, if there lives 600.000 in each octant as said by Marasi: AoL chapter 4 page 85 UK edition. This means the population of northern Scadrial I would assume would come up with a little more than 5 million. Then you will have to count with the people in the south pole. So pollution would be of less trouble but they will notice it. They will probably not begin with renewable resources (unless Harmony interferes). I don't know what this is but just a general thought.
  20. For those who know, Harmony is extremely torpid, due to the shard"s" he pocess, formerly Preservation and Ruin, are of exact opposite intent. He became a new intent under the integration of those two shards. I believe we have reiterated the fact that Harmony is extremely hard to act on something, mostly relying on his agents. But have we consider or ponder on the circumstances in which Harmony might act? This might turns out to be a crucial piece of information in determing the future developments of the cosmere. First, we have to answer that whether its inactiveness is only due to its singular intent, Harmony, or due to the clashing of its two former intent. But considering from the current state of discussion, I think that the answer leans way more on the former option, if not reaching a complete verdict already. You might think that if Harmony is just Harmony but not "Preservation vs Ruin", it's more likely to act. Harmony could vanquish all crime on Scardrial and acheive balance and blahblahblah...Well, no. Harmony doesn't do much purely out of his "Harmoniousness" is pretty logical in a philosophical sense. Harmony is most oftenly tied to the Oriental Philosophy, or more specifically, Daoism. Daoism believes that balance, or harmony is achieved by following the "Dao", or in literal translation the Way. If we endeavor on balance by actions, the reactions will simply pushes us further from balance. Rashek is the epitome of why Harmony wouldn't and shouldn't act on basically anything at all. Then, if we are in favor of the theory that "Harmony doesn't act due to its eagerness in Harmony", what triggers his action and how will he work? What if someone, or someSHARD, knock things out of balance or harmony pretty badly, which is in direct conflict with Harmony's intent? Would Sazed then act? And how will he? Making wonders like he did when he restored Scadrial to its former position? Or like Endowment to just send more agents? Harmonium would be the next biggest clue to how the newly formed Shard works. Thoughts, my fellow 17th sharders? Fun idea of the day: If Honor combines with Odium, it should be named Batman. Seriously.
  21. So if there are 16 shards does Harmony count as 1 shard or 2 shards?
  22. Since Sazed now holds the power of Preservation, couldn't he take the form of the mist spirit like Leras did if he wanted to? Also, would he be bound in not being able to directly speak to humans anymore (as Preservation was) or would the fact that he is partly Ruin amend that (as Ruin was able to speak directly to those with Hemalurgic spikes)?
  23. My question is: could Scadrial have moved Scadrial out of the solar system or are there limitations?
  24. When Ruin and Preservation combined, they became Harmony. What might other combined shards be called? Some guesses: Devotion+Dominion=Loyalty Devotion+Endowment=Charity Honor+Dominion+Endowment=Justice Odium+Honor=Vengeance (which would be totally awesome)
  25. I wonder if one of the important Shards on Roshar might actually be named Desolation, instead of, or in addition to, Odium. In the preview chapters for WoR, there are several instances where characters (mainly Darkness) refers to Desolation coming. Not "a" desolation, not "the" desolation, but Desolation, as in a proper-noun type entity. So, maybe Odium has evolved to Desolation, ala Harmony=Ruin+Preservation? Or Desolation is another Shard in the Greater Roshar area, coming to team-up? Curious as to what everyone's thoughts are. ***** EDIT: Thanks for the feedback! I posted below (http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/5897-odium-or-desolation/#entry94384) with an updated theory, and updated post title from "Odium or Desolation?" to "Odium, Desolation, and Recreance"
