  1. Hello, I have been rereading ROW and trying to focus on some of the Radiants with less screen time. We see that Gaz, like all of the other members of Shallan's Deserters has joined the Unseen Court and presumably bonded a Cryptic. I remembered that Brandon said that if Elokhar had been allowed to progress with his oaths he would have had to eventually admit to being a bad king. We know more about Gaz than any of the other new Lightweavers, so I tried to guess some of his Truths. I imagine his first truth (besides the oath) would be about his gambling. Admitting that an addiction is real and out of control is the first step after all. Gaz reads as a pessimist because he is always complaining and expects the worst from people, but he is one of several people to become inspired after seeing Shallan's drawing of them. I imagine another early oath might be admitting that he actually can become a better person, like in the drawing. However I think that a later oath (4th or 5th) would have to be him admitting his culpability in the deaths and mistreatment of the bridgemen. We see in WOK that he is bothered by what he is doing and in WOR when he explains it he is quick to pass the blame onto Sadeas and his superiors. This oath is the one I would be most interested in seeing on screen, either the actual swearing or a scene where he apologizes to the bridgemen and its made clear that this is part of him admitting truth. He may also have to admit to his cowardice Tib
  2. So I'm re-reading Warbreaker and couldn't help but pause when I got to the start of Chapter 54 where Vivenna is trying to get information out of a beggar named Tuft. Particularly, because of this description; The thing that jumped out was the lack of eye patch. Coincidence? Probably. But it was enough to give me pause and buy a ticket for the Crazy Theory Train. So here goes. - I've always assumed that Gaz has a) not worn an eye patch for a long time/ever within the camps, and b ) has developed this descriptive marker and can be identified by it Spoiler for Words of Radiance below: It's probably not too uncommon to see someone in the war camps with only one eye (or at least I would assume, as they are at war). But presumably (going off IRL convention) most of these soldiers wear eye patches, whereas Gaz distinctively doesn't. - Gaz' tic of looking to the side: most people I've read have taken this to be tied in with discomfort from his reduced perception, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar tic in someone who has lived on the street and who is constantly checking for nearby danger. - Gaz does eventually get an eye patch. But why? His issue (from the small amount we have from his POV) seems to come from the lack of perception in one half of his visual field and this doesn't change by adding an eye patch. However, the way other people see him might change. (Again, spoiler above) - Gaz' money problems could potentially lead to the situation where he's forced into the streets This is as solid as a block of Swiss cheese and even while writing this I was arguing with myself about things that didn't fit. But eh, I'm interested in this very unlikely, but *maybe* scenario. (Also if anyone happens to know of previous discussion re. this I would be forever grateful for links as I've been unsuccessful at finding anything).

  4. ***contains some spoilers for band of mourning, the emperors soul*** hello all i think this topic has been talked about before in terms of the link between soulcasting and forgery. however after i read the bands of mourning another peice of the puzzle slotted into place. My theory is that shallan being completely unaware can use her soul casting and connection to cryptic spren with her drawing ability to change a persons identity. For this im using Gaz and maybe Yalb as a example. Shallans Memory skill might come from her bond with the cryptic spren. They are described as being a infinite spren trying to see the truth of things (whenever i imagine pattern i always think of some ever changing fractal pattern), when i think of truth i think less of 'truth and lies' but more the mathematical, spiritual, cognatve and realistic truth of the cosmere. I think her Memory ability is part of this glimpsing the truth of a object's/person's reality in all three realms. i think she is able to hack into an object or persons idenity and seperate it and modify it. When she draws she is able to use the physical action of drawing to manifest this change. In this section she describes the charcol, page, and other tools as blood, sinew, skin. interestingly enough these terms are in the ars arcanum besides the heralds. Therefore important to all magic systems in the cosmere. As shallan is activley thinking of these in those terms it is having a reaction to her drawing in the cognative, spiritual realms as well. In Bands of Mourning we find out that a object/persons identity can be manipluated and changed when the Kandra are talking to the wax and wayne gang. Although they are talking in terms of investiture changing its not a long stretch to think of the process as working bidirectionaly, investiture could be used to change a persons identity. we see this with Hemalurgy and forgery for instance. In The emperors soul Shai tells us how Forgery works. Using a phsyical object (marks) and having to know the memoryand history of a object/person to change its identity. I believe when Shallan uses her drawings she literally is able to trim of a part of a persons identity and modify it. whenever she draws a person she has come in contact with she draws a positive aspect reaffirming and strengthening part of the person which was always there and undeveloped. In Yalb, Talakv and Gaz and her other guards (cant remember their names now ) she was drawing braveness and confidence and in likenesses that where different from the people that they had become. I believe when she shows these pictures and drawing to the people themselves, the idenitity within the drawing that shallan had cut and augmented and transformed instantly reaches out and rebinds with the orginal person. As Shai says when forging an object in the cognitive realm is how it is viewd and how it views itself and will always try an exist as a whole. In the novels whenever these peoples glance upon their drawings of themselves they always take a while like Gaz, Jasnah ect, this isnt them admiring the artwork this is the time which their souls are being repaired and changed with shallans transformation ability. when we last see Gaz in words of radiance he seems different and changed this could be due to shallans transformation seeping through his spiritual and cognative self and changing his outlook and self perspective. However i could be wrong as other theorys go and this could be a kandra in disguise.
  5. Well. What if Gaz's lost eye was light? doesn't seem too likely. However, If he (along with Vathah) becomes a squire to Shallan, We'll find out, Won't we? ------------------------------- Actually, I thought of something even better while I was typing this: If you were a One-eye, you could pretend to be either a Lighteyes or a Darkeyes just by moving your Eyepatch. :-) Are there any characters beside Gaz who wear an eyepatch/are missing an eye?
  6. what if gaz's other eye(the missing one) was light?
  7. Random Speculation time! I rarely like doing much unfounded speculating, but my final re-listen to tWoK has put me in the mood for it. I think Gaz was killed by Darkness, for being a potential surgebinder. Evidence: 1) Gas disappears without a trace; perhaps like Ym? ii) Gaz, as evidenced by his POV, is a better man than he pretends. He hates himself for being part of the horrible lives of the Bridgemen. c) Gaz's description of being watched and his missing eye could be a spren lurking just out of sight, And finally what prompted me to think of this - 0b100) The title of Chapter 30, the one which contains Gaz's POV, is called Darkness Unseen. It is obviously a reference to Gaz's half blindness, but could have another meaning? We know the chapter headings are more important than most give them credit for.
  8. So after rereading WoK, again, I had the distinct impression that Gaz is being haunted by Cryptics. From Jasnah's identification of Shallan's spren as a liespren, I believe Gaz will be of the same order as Shallan. My guess is that he did not have enough stormlight to accidentally trigger a surge until after Lamaril died and he no longer had to pay his blackmailer. It would not surprise me if Lamaril was actually blackmailing Gaz because of Gaz having accidentally used his abilities. Much like Kaladin, he would not want people to know that he had any powers associated with the fallen Radiants.
  9. I sort of proposed this theory in another thread, but wasn't ready to commit to it at the time. I still can't come up with a better idea. So here it is: Gaz is a Herald. As I've been puzzling over Gaz's disappearance, I've always been struck by the following quote: page 473: It makes me wonder exactly how old Gaz is. This seems to be a really important thing to be said. It sounds like he feels like he's worthless because he gave up on his honor and he doesn't deserve a better life than he has right now. It would also make his statement about ending up in a bridge crew very telling. What would happen to a herald who died a normal death? Would he end up in damnation? that would be plenty of motivation to leave the armies at the Shattered Plains. Being a bridge sergeant was relatively protected. Gaz = Herald could impact the motivations of other many other characters including Hoid. Which Herald is he? I don't know. If Vev is female, it can't be her, despite the connection to the eyes. If Jezrien is in the WoK prologue, then I'd guess Ishtar. Thoughts?
  10. Now this is totally just wild speculation, however I wanted to explore it. Its just for fun. We know that Brandon has mentioned that "Something happend to Gaz, that there is evidence to find out what it is" in TWOK. It is my current thinking that What happened to Gaz is that he was Murdered. On my current re-read of TWOK I was struck by something. The first time Gaz is mentioned being missing is by Kaladin, on a bridge run. It is right after Maps dies. Kaladin is talking to Lopen about the Rope, making sure that Lopen threw the whole coil down and didn't tie the rope to the bridge, for fear that Gaz would find out or suspect what Kaladin was trying to do. Kaladin then wonders "Where is Gaz? Why didn't he come on the bridge run?" When he said that, I though back, when was the last time someone, anyone mentioned Gaz. and I realized the last time we heard about Gaz was when Skar was asking "what if someone goes to Gaz about what we are doing down here?" (I.E. stealing the spheres.) That part ends with Kaladin explaing that we don't want to be mistrusting eachother and its a risk we will have to take, and we can't be second guessing eachother. and with Skar being "Placated" So with the limited knowledge we have, I say Skar wasn't "placated" enough and Killed Gaz to prevent anyone from turning in the rest of Bridge 4 Edit: clarification of Brandon Quote.
