  1. One of the weaknesses of Feruchemy in combat on Scadrial is that your Metalminds are ussually at least somewhat susceptible to being Allomantically pushed or pulled on. However, we've seen that aluminum lined bags or aluminum canteens can make Allomancer's metals immune to being touched, so what if a Feruchemist did the same? Could they coat the outside of a Metalmind bracer or braclet with aluminum, but leave the inside strip (the one that touches their skin) unlined so as to make it immune to Steelpushing and Ironpulling?
  2. We know that it's already possible to take Invested powers made through Forgery with Hemalurgy (WoB). We also know that Southern Scadrial is finding ways to let inanimate objects use Feruchemy and Allomancy using Harmonium. We know that it's possible to Hemalurgically spike inanimate objects so long as they are "alive" enough (WoB). And finally, we know that you can force a Forgery to take on someone it wasn't intended for so long as their soul is "familiar" with the soul of the person who was intended to be stamped (basically, Connections must exist between the two). So, with that in mind, I hypothesize that you could make a Forgery to stamp a Scadrien (let's name him Joe for fun ) into an Allomancer or Feruchemist, then make a device that used Feruchemical duralumin to Connect to Joe. You then place the Forgery on the device instead of the Joe. Even though the Forgery won't take for long, you don't need it to last more than a second or two to Hemalurgically spike out the Invested power. And there you go, no people spiked but one Hemalurgic spike Invested with one Metalborn power. Get enough Investiture to use and you may be able to mass produce Hemalurgic spikes this way.
  3. We know that if you pierce your body with Metalminds then if you get Leeched your Metalminds also get Leeched away. But we also know that Hemalurgic spikes are immune to burned aluminum, which used a similar mechanic. And then, we also know that you can double your Hemalurgic spikes as Feruchemical storages, with the Investiture of both aspects being stored in different parts of the metal. SO, in conclusion, I see two possibilities: 1. If a Hemalurgist uses one of their spikes to double as a Feruchemical storage and they get Leeched, the part of their spike containing a Feruchemical charge gets burned away. This could be interesting to see, particularly since Hemalurgic spikes do not contain much Investiture within them typically. Just enough to "hotwire" the Spiritweb and grant powers or enhanced attributes. So it may be possible to use this method to minimize the size of your Hemalurgic spikes while providing the maximum Investiture such a spike could hold. Alternatively, you could use this method to test the actual amount of metal required to hold a Hemalurgic charge of a certian amount. 2. If the spike does not burn away when Leeched, then Hemalurgists actually have an advantage over natural Feruchemists in this area; other Feruchemists must either leave their Metalminds at least somewhat vulnerable to Steelpushing and Ironpulling or they must leave them vulnerable to being Leeched out of their bodies, but a Hemalurgist using a spike as a Metalmind has the best of both worlds. 3. If the Feruchemical charge is pulled out of the spike but the metal of the spike remains intact, then at the very least the Hemalurgist doesn't need to worry about getting more Metalminds, though they don't have any other cool advantage or unique mechanic.
  4. Seeing these discussions about random twin orbs, I had an idea of one Twinborn concept that seemed like a good fit for Era 3. We haven’t seen really any of the Spiritual Feruchemy in action or a proper usage of A-Elecrtum. So a combo that could be neat is A-Electrum and F-Chromium. The former gives you short range but probably more precise future sight, while the latter does more long term prediction. I also think they’d probably have interesting synergy, kinda like how Wax can manipulate his Steelpushes with weight shifting. I imagine that this Twinborn could probably direct their shadows far better than any other Oracle. Maybe tapping Fortune makes the electrum shadows less chaotic. You might even be able to guide electrum shadows without recalling thinking about it, which would achieve an Atium like effect for yourself. As for Resonance, my favorite idea is “detaching” an electrum shadow and having one travel around doing stuff, guided by Fortune. I’d call this Twinborn a Diviner. But I’m also curious about what else it could do. Based on what we know of Electrum and Fortune, does this combo seem like it would work well? What sort of ways could you use its future sight?
  5. In the Ars Arcanum for TLM, it mentions that the reason Steel Inquisitors got exhausted more quickly than normal people was because their Spiritwebs were unreasonably burdened by their large number of Hemalurgic spikes. I was wondering if perhaps bronze Feruchemy could help overcome this, particularly with Compounding, since it provides all the benefits of a good night's sleep. Also, could there be more problems with having too many Hemalurgic spikes, such as maybe a reduced healing rate (from Spiritweb deterioration)? Brandon Sanderson mentioned that some Inquisitors "burn up" more quickly than others depending on their specific power set. Perhaps those with more spikes age a bit faster due to their Spiritwebs being worn down? This also makes me wonder if it's the number of spikes that wears one down (due to more holes being in the Spiritweb) or if it's the total Investiture of the spikes; it would be kind of weird if more Investiture in the spikes led to a greatly reduced lifespan, since we've seen elsewhere in the Cosmere than more Investiture means a greater lifespan.
  6. The title says it all. To elaborate, I'm wondering if it is at all possible to use Emotional Allomancy to control an Inquisitor through the cracks of their Spiritweb, given that we have never seen it done before. Granted, there are some good reasons for this. Practically no one knew about this "Hemalurgic backdoor" and the ones that did couldn't and/or wouldn't try it. By the time this was discovered, Ruin had escaped, and no one could contest a Shard's hold. Inquisitors had access to Allomantic copper, possibly multiple times over, which was an excellent counter. Inquisitors have sapience and willpower, and if the Allomancer fails, Adonalsium have mercy upon them. I'm wondering if I have some of the facts wrong, or if there's a reason all its own for this to never happen. Otherwise, to cover all my bases, let's assume a group of several Soothers (or Rioters, but for the sake of argument, Soothers) with several Nicrobursts got together Post-Catacendre, and tried to overwhelm Marsh's copper and willpower with a combined Push. Excluding divine intervention, is there any reason this would not work?
  7. Well, here I am again, praising F-tin from the rooftops. I often spend too much time wondering what senses can be stored from other sources of magic (lifesense, allomancy, whatnot), but I really haven’t soent much time wondering how many senses a regular Windwhisperer ferring could store. So let’s find out, shall we? Obviously, you have the base 5 (sight, hearing, feeling, taste, and smell). We also know for sure that we can store pain separately, so that makes 6. I would say it is fair to say you can store your sense of balance, sense of temperature, proprioception (knowing where your body is in relation to itself) quite well. To add on to that, I would add sense of gravitational direction (whether you are up or down) and sense of being in motion as separate enough to count as it’s own sense for tinminds. I would also count sense of dimensionality (if something is 3d or not) in this category as well. Now, on to the stretches. Sense of Time. This one I feel is not that bad, but at what point do we determine cognitive processes are their own senses? Another similar sense would be internal Sense of Direction. Knowing if you’re pointing south or west, or where you are in relation to an object or place. We also have some extensions of other senses. Color recognition: is this sight? Not quite. But is it different enough? Sense of Pitch: same thought as color recognition, but with hearing. I would argue that since we have identified that pain can be stored separate from touch, that these two can be stored separately. So thus far that is 16, which is a number I would be very happy staying at. However, I’m certain there is more. Well, we do have internal senses. Sense of hunger, thirst, and bladder needs. Perhaps you could even count internal pain, such as head or stomach aches as separate from other sense of pain. To take it even further, what about sense of light? Could you gain night vision using F-tin? Maybe! Some of these are stretches, and some of them are quite reasonable. Where would we draw the line? Are we going to chalk it all up to Intent, and decide that if the Windwhisperer thinks it’s a sense, then it can be stored? That would certainly make sense (no pun intended), but then how overpowered could a Windwhisperer truly be?
  8. We know that Marsh survived to Era 2 by Atium Compoumding. WoB also tells us that Marsh was not given his spike by Ruin, but instead stole it from dead Inquistors zas678 Why on earth does Marsh have a Feruchemical atium spike? You've said that Ironeyes is in fact Marsh. Did Ruin spike someone for him? Or did Sazed grant him the power? Brandon Sanderson Dead Inquisitors Vin killed. Some were granted the spike for reasons I haven't spoken of yet. /r/Fantasy_Bookclub Alloy of Law Q&A (Jan. 17, 2012) As far as I can tell, there are two usages for F-Atium: as a disguise or to prolong youth, particularly with Compounding. Yet, neither seems to make sense for Ruin. He doesn’t really need disguises. And if he wanted an Inquistor to be immortal, why not his top pawn? Ruin was willing to give him duralumin despite wasting a Mistborn. It doesn’t add up Which got me thinking. What if those spikes were given by TLR instead? We have reason to believe that some Inquistors have extended lifespans. If Inquistors made themselves old during the rest periods, they could probably extend their lives a fair bit Chaos (paraphrased) How long is the lifespan of an Inquisitor? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) It depends on the powers they're given. Some burn up quickly, and others are extended. In general though they do tend to have slightly longer lives. Since Marsh has the missing bag of atium he's going to be around for a while. Ancient 17S Q&A (May 1, 2010) Now, the slightly longer lives part could be explained by them being extra Invested from spikes. In fact, I think that would explain the “generally” part quite well. But the WoN also says others are extended, as if they got a bigger boost. If the Inquistors managed to store enough youth during their rest periods, as the gold spike ones do, they could probably go a bit longer with the extra youth. More importantly, it helps people believe the Inquistors are immortal, since they’ll never seem old even as the same ones serve. Now, the big problem with this is potential Compounding. We can safely assume most, if not all, Inquistors are either base Mistborn or have spikes for A-Atium. So TLR would be risking them learning to Compound on their own, which doesn’t track well. But having F-Atium doesn’t necessarily require the Inquistors to Compound. They could just become old while resting and then young out in the world. Ultimately, the question is this: why would TLR or Ruin give random Inquistors F-Atium spikes? It has to be one of the two and I really can’t understand why Ruin didn’t give one to Marsh when he had invested so much. But if any of you have a plausible explanation for either theory, I’d love to hear it. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
  9. Since the topic of Reverse Compounding has come up in a few recent threads, I wanted to do some speculation. See what we know and what we can assume. Here are my motes First, a quick summary via the relevant WoB Through some method, it is possible to do this in reverse. Use Feruchemy to enhance Allomancy Here are a few possibilites 1. Some metal combinations enable reverse Compounding simply by having similar powers. Tin is compatible with other sensory Allomancy and F-Pewter stores the strength from A-Pewter. In the latter example, a Pewter Compunder could store the strength from A-Pewter instead of muscles, then Compound to gain strength without muscles. In addition, a Feruchemist can tap way more from their metalminds than an Allomancer. For example, a Twinborn with A-Bronze and F-Tin could store bronze sense for a day. They could then compress it to gain Duralumin level bronze, which wouldn’t be possible even via flaring. 2. Depending on how F-Nicrosil works, it may provide a boost to abilities stored in nicrosilminds. In this regard, it would be similar to A-Duralumin. Both are useless on their own but boost other powers. Though it is worth noting that abilites are more like coppermind memories rather than speed from steel. Make of that what you will. 3. The reason Compounding only provides the Feruchemical ability is because a metalmind naturally filters the Investiture to do that instead of Allomancy. If you could get the power in the metalmind to think it’s Allomancy, you should theoretically get that extra Investiture on top of what you get from burning normally. This may be as simple as having proper Intent. After all, Compounders get the Allomantic effects by default if they haven’t practiced. This method simply extends that Intention towards changing the contents of the metalmind. But if it is more difficult, it would likely require some unknown method of Spirtual Realm hacking. Naturally, this method requires one to have the Allomantic and Feruchemical powers of the metal one wishes to reverse Compound. 4. This last one is somewhat unique, so bear with me on the steps. Suppose you were a Compounder with this method. First, you need a regular piece of metal and ingest it. Once you have the reserve, focus on it and act as if you were tapping from a metalmind. The metal will start disintegrating as if it had been burned normally and provide the Allomantic effect. However, your Intent is tapping, so the Allomantic power acts like a Feruchemical attribute. You can then store this altered power into a new metal of the same type, just like regular Compounders do. The result is a metalmind that stores an Allomantic power. For example, you could make a zinc mind that stores Rioting. You can tap it as a normal Feruchemist does, which includes compressing it for more power than flaring or even Duralumin. Alternatively, you could Compound it. Either way, you’d have access to that on top of your normal Compounding. Which means every Compounder would effectively have Duralumin or worse on demand. It would also explain why the Lord Ruler’s Allomancy is so insane: he could’ve easily cracked this trick. It’d also apply to the Bands of Mourning. If method 3 or 4 is true, that also helps solve the mystery of why some Inquistors had F-Atium spikes. Ruin would’ve intended the Inquistors to not only function as immortal Cosmere agents, but agents who could Compound Atium sight. They hadn’t yet learned this technique in HoA, but would’ve had time to practice had Ruin won. But why was Marsh not given that spike? It could be because he had too many other spikes, but this is unlikely. Ruin probably would’ve switched one out if he needed. Instead, I believe that it was about loyalty. One of the perks of empowered Atium is seeing the Spiritual Realm. I suspect that Ruin didn’t want Marsh to achieve such power, leaving it to more loyal and bloodthirsty Inquisitors. I would like to give credit to @alder24 for inspiring my thought proccess. Their words on my F-Atium threads inspired both this post and theory #4 (my favorite of the bunch). If you want to give me a reputation, I would reccomend giving them one too. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Good night. Edit: Forgot to put the WoB about storing strength from A-Pewter in F-Pewter. Here it is
  10. I was on another thread that was talking about Lerasium Hemalurgy and the topic came up on whether or not Feruchemy draws from all three realms of the Cosmere. I felt that it would be better to further discuss it on a new thread, as it seems big enough a question all on its own. As I understand it, Feruchemy typically draws from the spiritual realm, diverting the natural flow of Investiture of the Feruchemist's Spiritweb almost like a river that normally flows into a lake being diverted to fill a reservoir. This Investiture can be tapped from a Metalmind to temporarily increase the attribute that was stored earlier, and the Feruchemist returns to their natural state of being as soon as they cease to fill their Metalmind (the flow of Investiture no longer being diverted, and the "river" returning to fill the "lake"). However, not all Ferucehmical powers seem to follow this rule. F-copper allows for memories to be stored, but the Feruchemist doesn't "snap back" to their normal state after they stop filling the Metalmind- they have to tap it again to retrieve what was lost. The same rule applies to Feruchemical bendalloy, cadmium, and brass; attributes stored with those metals are completely lost until tapped. I believe that this is because they don't draw Investiture from the spiritual realm at all, but because they draw from the physical and cognitive realms; the attributes are converted into Investiture, stored inside Metalminds, and later converted back into their original form for use. In this case, it's less like a river having its flow diverted and more like a pool of water getting emptied into barrels for later use; the pool doesn't return to its original form or regain its water unless more water is actively brought into it through natural processes (such as eating to regain calories or your brain forming more memories) or unless the barrels have their water return to the original pool. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on the matter so that I can determine if this idea of mine is accurate or not.
  11. I was looking at the Feruchemy metal symbols and the dice for the Mistborn Adventure Game have two Bronze symbols (red) and the two symbols I don't know (blue and yellow). Can anyone tell me what they are?
  12. There seems to have been a lot of confusion and conflicting ideas on how Compounding works on other threads as of late. This is how I understand it. 1. When you Compound, you need to put a Feruchemical charge into a Metalmind. 2. You burn the Metalmind, but (can) choose to draw Feruchemical power instead of Allomantic power (Vin gets the Allomantic power of one of Sazed's Pewterminds rather than the Feruchemical power in TFE). 3. You only get Feruchemical power by burning the Invested parts of your Metalmind; a partially full Metalmind will only yield a Feruchemical charge as long as the Feruchemically Invested part remains (though you can siphon off some of the new Feruchemical charge gained by Compounding and put it back into the burning metal, meaning that you can start with a relatively small Feruchemical charge powered by your own self, then Compound ever after using only Preservation's power and burned metal). 4. The amount of Feruchemical power you get from burning your Metalmind is determined by how powerful an Allomancer you are, since the more powerful your Allomancy the more Investiture you draw from Preservation per unit of metal burned; the Feruchemical attribute isn't actually multiplied as Sazed thinks in TFE, it's just used to hack an Allomantic power stream (whether you can keep the original Feruchemical charge and recycle it or whether it is lost and completely replaced by Preservation's power isn't yet known as I understand it). 5. Also, if you compound using Hemalurgic spikes, you do in fact draw from Ruin's Investiture instead of Preservation's. I had wondered about this for a while, personally. 6. Allomantic duralumin can be used to speed up the process of Compounding. 7. While Compounding is very powerful if done correctly, practitioners are still limited by Feruchemical storage size, the amount of metal they can get to metabolize, the raw Allomantic power of the practitioner (for efficiency at gathering more Feruchemical charge), and the inherent limitations of Feruchemical compression (the more power you tap at once, the less efficient it becomes, and some attributes like steel and pewter have more practical upper limits as to their usefulness). Hopefully this post is actually useful to some, and not just only spitting facts that are common knowledge.
  13. So, I'm almost certain others have theorized this already, but after some extensive searching, I was unable to find anyone on here who did. So, here we go. In Epilogue 7, Marsh approaches Wax, Steris, and Marasi before Wayne's statue. When asked on how he walks about without drawing attention, he passes it off as emotional Allomancy. Still, Wax expresses his doubts. I think all Cosmerenauts on all worlds stirred in their beds with that phrase. But regardless, this moves on to my theory. I think Marsh moves about unseen through a combination of emotional Allomancy... and Feruchemical duralumin. To quote from the Coppermind, Feruchmeical duralumin functions as such. This seems a very likely explanation for that "something more" Wax postulates. Granted, don't know if Marsh was given spikes following the Catacendre, and there is no way of knowing if Rashek was aware of duralumin's Feruchemical properties. Still, he was a Feruchemist himself, and discovered duralumin. It makes sense he would test it. Anyway, there's my three cents. Thoughts? ~Longshot97
  14. I thought of another cool hack to gain Allomancy; using Feruchemy to overcome the limited available Investiture in Forgery. 1. Use Forgery on a Scadrian to turn them into an Allomancer or Ferruchemist, but one who has had their power Hemalurgically stolen and survived. This means that the Forgery will require far less Investiture to achieve the end result, and therefore should be more within the scope of what Forgery can normally achieve. 2. Give the Scadrian access to Feruchemical gold, likely with a Southern Scadrian medallion. Since the person's Spiritweb thinks that they should have an Invested power, the Investiture "heals" a new piece of Investiture onto the Spiritweb, creating a new power where one hadn't existed previously. If it proves impossible to get the power to stay after the Soulstamp runs out, you could Hemalurgically remove the new power to use later (which isn't the ideal case, but you'd still get a functional power where one didn't exist before). Plus, if the new power is just an extension of the Forgery, then removing it would likely not cause serious spiritual damage to the donor since it isn't a real part of them.
  15. Can you key a metalmind to always drain the given attribute or is that wishful thinking, If the person was tapping nicrosil and filling a metal mind then it was removed or he stopped tapping nicrosil would it trap the mind into always filling? Any other theories?
  16. I found a quote that may have some interesting implications. Except, we don't see Miles exhibiting any extra powers from Hemalurgy, and we know that Miles likes to pierce his own body with gold spikes (not Hemalurgic ones) to act as Feruchemical storages. For reasons seen in TLM he may have a single Hemalurgic Trellium spike, but one spike is never enough to control a being. I think that it may be possible that if someone pierces their body with a Feruchemically charged metal, it may allow external forces to influence, maybe even control them similar to Hemalurgic spikes (though you may need far more Metalminds than spikes to achieve this effect). Investiture exists in all three realms, so if an Invested metal pierces your body, maybe that opens a hole for other things to get in, though likely it wouldn't as pronounced with Feruchemy as with Hemalurgy. TLR also may have inadvertently made himself more vulnerable to Ruin's influence by doing this, especially since Atium- Ruin's own essence- was what his primary Metalminds were made of.
  17. Please note this is speculation with my somewhat limited knowledge. Speed bubbles will move with an object that is massive enough and moving fast enough, and the faster you are going, the less mass you need. This relationship is probably along the lines of energy and mass being the same thing, but maybe not. I also lack the information of what the threshold is for both of those factors. I believe that if you draw on enough weight from f-iron, or enough speed from f-steel, you can create a speed bubble that moves with you.
  18. Greetings! For the past several months, I, along with a few friends and fellow devoted Cosmere fans, have been working on creating a full set of the Metallic Arts as Minecraft mods. Some of you might know about Legobmw's Allomancy mod. We're working with him to make sure the three Arts interact properly, but for the most part, things are slow-going due to a lack of coders. We also have a working Feruchemy mod that even includes functioning Compounding. Currently, the two are separate mod files that interact. Hemalurgy is looking to end up the same, as a third mod with cross-mod interactions. There are so many ideas we want to implement, including Ettmetal primer cubes and other in-world gear, but we just don't have enough manpower to code it all in a reasonable time frame. Art-wise, I and a few others have textures for items and blocks solidly managed. We may need someone good at mob textures, but for the most part, it truly is just a lack of people competent in Java coding that's holding these mods back from their true potential. If you want to contribute code for the Metallic Arts mods, well, you've come to the right place! Give some examples of your modding capabilities, and we'll add you to our modding Discord server so that we can coordinate our efforts.
  19. I have an issue with some of the fundamental physics behind F-Iron. Namely, what it actually does and how it interfaces with Conservation of Energy and Momentum. As per the Coppermind, "Iron is used to store or retrieve (gain) physical mass. This is accomplished by changing the Skimmer's mass, not by changing the effect of gravity on the Skimmer, i.e. it does not modify weight directly ... The law of conservation of momentum still exists when using iron Feruchemy, so while tapping weight doesn't significantly increase the speed of falling (not considering air resistance), decreasing one's weight to half will double one's speed ... Feruchemical iron interferes with an individual's interaction with the Higgs field". I want to break this down step by step, because I think there are pretty big fundamental problems with this explanation. So, Iron changes the user's mass, not by changing the effect of gravity, Conservation of Momentum still applies. If this were truly the case, (and it must be to see the effects we see) than F-Iron users would not fall slower when storing mass. This is evidently obvious by facts we know in real life, two objects of different mass fall at the same speed under the same gravitational conditions. F = GMm/r^2, dp/dt = F, ma = m GM/r^2. Mass cancels out of this equation, and has no effect on the acceleration felt. For a feruchemist to fall slower when storing weight, there would need to be a distinction between Inertial mass and Gravitational mass. The relativistic explanation says that these masses are the same, meaning that iron feruchemy must be changing the effect of the gravitational field on a mass (ie gravitational acceleration) otherwise the change in mass would have no effect on the force felt due to gravity. So either we go with the Newtonian explanation (mi and mg) or the Standard Theory explanation (only one m, but you feel the gravitational force differently). This causes problems with other effects. We can be very certain that F-Iron does effect mass, as we see Wax is able to push harder while tapping iron. He clearly requires more force to be accelerated when tapping iron, and less while storing. F-Iron also cannot change both mass and gravity, as that would once again cancel any effect on falling speed. There also might be an issue with conservation of energy as well, but I would have to do the math to find out. Conservation of momentum is fine under the canon explanation, but energy changes by the square of your speed, so a skimmer storing weight will require kinetic energy. This could theoretically be explained by just stealing energy from the environment like (Extremely minor SA spoilers) but that would be a bit counter to the idea of End-Neutral Feruchemy. Please let me know if there's a hole in my logic or math somewhere or if I'm missing something, this is going to bug me for a while.
  20. One of the interesting things about Investiture is that the Intent of what Investiture you are using matters. For example, you can only alter yourself so much with Awakening's standard system because Endowment's Intent permeates the Investiture you are using. I think that if you could find a way to craft an Invested power from Endowment's Investiture then, you may be able to transfer it as you would BioChromatic-Breaths. Here's a method that I thought of. Step one: get an Unsealed Metalmind that provides the ability to use Feruchemical gold and aluminum (health and Identity) or a pair of Hemalurgic spikes that provide the same powers. Step two: give the powers to a willing Nalthian who then stores a ton of health while blanking their Identity. NO COMPOUNDING. The health must come from the Nalthian's own Spiritweb. Step three: excise the Invested power of another willing individual via Hemalurgy without killing them (probably an Allomancer or Ferring, though it may be that other Invested powers that are innately part of someone's Spiritweb could work). Step four: have the donor tap the healing from the Unsealed metalmind (or Hemalurgic spikes) to replace the power. And at this point, it is important to know that when you heal a part of someone's Spiritweb, you actually graft an entirely new piece of Investiture on. And in this case, that Investiture came entirely from Endowment, as Nalthian's Spiritwebs are made up entirely of her essence. So now we have an Invested power made up entirely of Endowment's Investiture. This may mean that you could transfer it as you could normal Breaths, though you may have to Connect the donor to Nalthis in order to gain the ability to do so. If this is the case, you could create very powerful individuals, but without the vulnerabilities and limitations of Hemalurgy- though the powers may be able to be drained by things like larken and chromium Mistings, but I'm not sure; this is entirely theoretical. Let me guys know what you think!
  21. From what we know about Era 3, the protagonist’s brother is one of the few characters we know about. Since his nerdy sister has Allomantic powers and we know both are Terris, that suggests he could be a Metalborn. So I pose the question to you: what powers might he have? Also, friendly reminder that as far as we know, siblings aren’t especially likely to share metals. We know twins of either type do so more commonly, but not how much regular siblings share compared to unrelated people. Make of that what you will (option listed other more esoteric combos like Mistborn + Ferring. it’s inclusion is a formality, as are Mistborn and Full Feruchemist to a lesser extent. I don’t expect anything with more powers than a Twinborn)
  22. In both Feruchemy and Hemalurgy, nicrosil stores Investiture. Yet, I don’t think they function the same, even accounting for different Hemalurgic spikes used on Allomancy and Feruchemy. In particular, Hemalurgy distinguishes between “powers” and “investiture”: both Atium and aluminum mention it Pagerunner The Hemalurgy table, you wrote down "atium steals any power, lerasium is all abilities, nicrosil is Investiture"; what's the difference between those three? Hemalurgic atium, lerasium, and nicrosil. What's powers, abilities, and Investiture? Brandon Sanderson People are Invested in ways that do not give them active powers. So for instance, everyone on Nalthis is Invested. Everyone in the cosmere is, really. You want to steal their Investiture, but they don't have a power. You're still ripping off a piece of their soul. So there is a distinction between the actual Investiture that's in a human being and a specific power that they have. So that distinction is pretty easy. You can also, with Hemalurgy, steal specific things. You can steal just general Investiture. You can steal, if you want--this is where the kandra Blessings come from. You can instead steal specific things that are not like stealing Allomancy. Stealing, for instance, someone's mental acuity. Pagerunner So abilities is like the half that's all the strength, speed, all that kind of stuff? Those are abilities, versus the Metallic Arts are all powers? Brandon Sanderson Yes. Pagerunner Then Investiture, is that offworld magics? Brandon Sanderson No, no, it's the raw power. Pagerunner Nicrosil is their soul? Brandon Sanderson Yes. A piece of their soul, essentially. Pagerunner So how would you go about stealing an offworld power? Brandon Sanderson It's going to depend. A Breath, you would steal with nicrosil. It's general Investiture, is what you would probably going call that. You could forcibly remove someone's Breath from them. The ability to be a Sand Master you would steal with the power ability. JordanCon 2021 (July 16, 2021) The impression I got was that for off world magics, nicrosil would take end neutral magics (you need Investiture from yourself) and end positive would be Atium. Hence why you need to steal Breath with the former and Sand Mastery with the latter. Yet, we know Nicrosil stores both Allomancy and Feruchemy. On top of that, nicrosil metalminds should be able to store Surgebinding kingbirdy (paraphrased) Could Feruchemical nicrosil be used to store other Invested abilities, such as a Returned Breath or the abilities of the Knights Radiant? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes, that's possible. DragonCon 2016 (Sept. 4, 2016) So my question is this: does Feruchemy just lack that distinction altogether? I assume so. Hemalurgy is a different system and it makes sense that it might function differently. In that case, you should be able to store Sand Mastery in nicrosil, but not use spikes that way. You could also argue that Atium, as a true wild card, can also steal Investiture. However, that makes aluminum Hemalurgy a bit weird since it removes (not steals) all powers. If all Invesiture were included in aluminum, that implies that it affects the very soul and likely destroys it Nightblood style. Anyway, what do you guys think? Am I missing something here? Let me know your thoughts.
  23. We often talk about using magic in awesome, hypothetical scenarios, but in which most of us would likely never really want to be in ourselves. But Feruchemy has so many applications for situations that everyone would be in. So, what are some ways that you guys think that Feruchemy would be useful to your own or someone else's everyday circumstances? Here are some of my ideas. 1. Store body heat with brass when it's hot outside or tap when it's cold. You can wear any type of clothing you want and with supreme comfort any time, anywhere. 2. Store calories with bendalloy to help with that diet you've been meaning to go on. You probably can't store actual body fat, but you could still control your caloric intake with precision (though it probably wouldn't help your self-discipline). 3. Store memories with copper to perfectly recall later. Who hasn't forgotten something on their to-do list because they misplaced their notepad, or had a really cool and inspirational idea- only to completely forget it later. 4. Store wakefulness with bronze to fall asleep. I sometimes have trouble with my circadian rhythm and am prone to falling asleep too late at night to get a full night's sleep. But if you store wakefulness, you could fall asleep on a whim, and then you can tap any extra wakefulness later, say when your work or school requires you to go overtime. 5. Tap mental speed with zinc and determination with electrum to improve study. Study can be hard. Sometimes, you just need some extra determination and focus to get yourself moving, or some extra mental acuity to solve a particularly tricky algebra problem. 6. Tap strength with pewter to do outdoor chores. Not everyone has this need, but I have to do outdoor chores on such as gathering and splitting firewood or building garden bed and such that require more physical strength than I typically have. Pewter's use is obvious here.
  24. Not once in era 2 do we see a Set member using a Hemalurgic spike that granted Feruchemical steel (Paalm doesn't count; she allied with the Set, but wasn't an official member). There were only a few known Steelrunners that Vwafendal had known about (was it three?), but even with Idashwy's power taken by Paalm, wouldn't the Set have had at least one or two Steelrunners available to spike? It's not like they didn't know how to access rare Feruchemical powers either: their small pile of Hemalurgic spikes providing Feruchemical gold prove this. It just seems like such a potentially powerful ability that the Set would have been absolutely giddy to get their hands on it. So why didn't they?
  25. The more I think about it, the more I realize Cosmere healing and kandras are a match made in heaven. The former can be shaped to at least some extent by how one perceives themself. The latter are far more inclined than any human to think of helpful objects as their body and store the results. They even call their artificial bones True Bodies. And that makes them very useful with the right setup Take Gold compounding, for instance. Spike a kandra with those abilities, then give them a True Body made of gold. Once they get used to it, they can then duplicate any material used in that True Body. On Scadrial, they could generate infinite Allomantic metals, even the rare ones. If they had Mistborn powers on top of that, then infinite duralumin. After all, they don’t get hurt because of healing and can easily replenish with duralumin time bubble. On top of that, a Kandra Fullborn is probably the most powerful non-Shard entity in the Cosmere. Such a being could have all of their Feruchemical attributes up to x100 forever, including whatever other magic systems they find. On top of that, it should also be possible to duplicate Invested objects. Even a human could theoretically do that. HazelCharm47 Let's say we have a hypothetical situation with Miles Hundredlives. In this scenario, he is wearing a gold metalmind filled to the brim with stored healing power. He is then spiked with a cadmium spike and loses his gold allomancy. Now, if I recall from various WoBs, he would be able to heal using the gold metalmind and regain his gold allomancy. I could be misremembering and he cannot heal it, but I believe he would be able to since it is part of his Identity. However, one question I have never seen the answer to is this: what happens to the ability in the spike? Is the allomantic ability still contained in the spike, leading to a duplicate? Or is the spike's ability lost? Or maybe I have this whole thing wrong and Miles could never have regained the ability in the first place. If the ability duplicates (which I doubt), that could lead to some crazy things. Also, this applies to any Twinborn with gold Feruchemy, I just thought Miles was a good example I guess Brandon Sanderson I'd like to see the exact WoB's here to make sure I'm being consistent, as I don't know that I confirmed you could regain lost powers--only that you could heal from hemalurgic soul damage. Most likely, what you'd end up with is a person who has been healed and can remove the spike from their body without damage, and without needing it to hold their soul together--but who has lost the ability in the spike. Regardless, though, what you want here (the mass production of spikes charged and even blanked) is possible with the right levels of investiture. It's an energy, like things in our world. The difficulty is finding out how to 1) get enough investiture and 2) key it to the right people and/or magic. Hope that's a little more clear. That said, a lot of times people just ask me if something is possible--and a lot of things are possible, but just very difficult. And with the right boost of investiture, in the right circumstances, it WOULD be possible to regrow lost (to spikes) powers. It's just highly unlikely. I'm not sure if the questions people are asking me are ones I've qualified, or not, in these instances. Also, this is all something I'm playing with still behind the scenes as we enter the modern age of Mistborn. HazelCharm47 As requested, here are the WoBs I believe are related. They might be obsolete, however. And I assume things will get changed a lot before Era 4, but hey, it's fun to ask anyways WoB #1: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/331/#e9434 This one states that as long as Miles still has his Identity, he would be able to use his Feruchemical metalminds after being spiked and would be able to heal. WoB #2: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/102/#e983 This one says that Miles would be able to heal his soul using Feruchemical healing and regain his gold Allomancy (assuming he survives the spiking). I think this is the most essential one! WoB #3: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/76/#e6335 This one is only somewhat related - implies that the Feruchemical and Allomantic powers are spiritually part of him. WoB #4: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/7/#e6435 Also tangentially related - damage to the soul from Hemalurgy can be healed (Although this might just be a Hoid thing). I guess the question could be expanded to include non-Feruchemical healing as a way to repair the soul after being spiked. Brandon Sanderson Well, I don't think any of those are specifically inaccurate. I just didn't quite understand what people were trying to get out of me. A lot of times, I don't know quite what people are trying to get out of me. I can see now they're trying to figure out. I see now, and I appreciate you putting this all together for me so I can see what the fans are trying to figure out. So the answer is a cautious yes. The problem here is that he'd need to compound a TON of healing first--but yes, it would work. You could theoretically turn someone like Miles into an invested spike factory. If he didn't have enough healing stored, though, he'd end up with a healed soul but a gap (like a scar on his soul) where his spiked-out abilities were. That could theoretically be healed with application of more investiture, depending on things like how he views himself, and if you could get the right type of investiture. General Reddit 2020 (Nov. 6, 2020) What makes kandra even better for this purpose is that a Gold compounding kandra wouldn’t need to worry about running out of gold to fuel these stunts and would be more likely to see those objects as part of themselves anyway. Then, the possibilites are basically endless. You could duplicate Hemalurgic spikes, Awakened objects, fabrials, white sand, Shardblades, the list goes on. As long as a Shard doesn’t take issue with this (and assuming Preservation can be tricked into making other Investiture.), you can do nearly anything, even accounting for the fact that you would quickly hit a limit with Invested objects. It would take some setting up, but the results are truly amazing. Edit: To clarify, we have reason to believe from the WoB about Miles that Compounding could duplicate Metallic Arts invested objects, but it may not do the same for other Investiture. Nevertheless, respawning metalminds and spikes is still useful
