  1. When we discuss which one type of ferring we'd like to be, my wife chooses steel or cadmium (she's a runner). I like the ones where storing and tapping both have benefits, like Wax with his iron. My preferred would be brass. Reading some posts here, it seems feelings are similar : pick a metal where tapping is useful enough or storing at certain times isn't too detrimental, or one where storing and tapping both have uses. So that got me thinking about how being a Firesoul works. Human bodies naturally regulate temperature - sweat to cool down, shiver to warm up, etc. So is a Firesoul just a little better at that? Or do they only store their own feeling of warmth, but not actual degrees? Brandon has said that storing has failsafes, so if we're storing actual thermal energy from our own body, we can't (or maybe won't) freeze ourselves to death. Presumably we could combust while tapping though. OR can I actually store ambient thermal energy from around me? Even if I just cooled myself and then naturally took in some heat transfer, storing warmth is going to have some effect on your surroundings. But if we take this to the extreme, every Firesoul is basically Iceman, able to manipulate thermal energy in a range. Which would be awesome. Can I store warmth just at one part of my body, by many degrees, or is it my whole body only? If it's one part, could I effectively be immune to burns by storing from wherever fire was touching me? If I'm a brass compounder, can I break the laws of physics and create energy that didn't exist before? This is hardly the only metallic art that could do it - Coinshots are creating kinetic energy that wasn't there before. Or I guess maybe they're pulling it from some shard's Investiture? One of those physics-breaking matter/energy-creating combos has got to be how the Scadrians get FTL...
  2. Ruin and Preservation investiture as a Source of Feruchemy Hi everyone! This is my theory about the Feruchemy's development on the people of Scadrial, or at least on the Terris People. The key to this Metallic Art (for me) is the Atium or to be more precise, the Ruin's Investiture. But first of all, a little backgrond on the Feruchemy: The Feruchemy was the only of the Metallic Arts to be widespread before the Rashek’s Ascension. And from the beginning of the Books seems to be “only” a genetic ability of the Terris People. After this short introduction, I could begin with the theoretical part of my theory: Feruchemy is a manifestation of Investiture of Scadrial, from Preservation and Ruin using the Scadrial’s Focus. The metals. The Feruchemy is an art of balance between the two shards, therefore the two types of Investiture in the Human Beings is very important to access to this Metallic Art. The Scadrial’s Humans has both Preservation and Ruin Investiture but the first is greater. The Humans may develop Feruchemy by changing the amount of Preservation-Ruin Investiture thay have. An “easy” and praticable source of Ruin’s Investiture is the Atium. Now we come at the Core of the Theory: The Feruchemy could be “unlocked” by increasing the Ruin’s Investiture through eating Atium. (a piece of Atium very small compared to a bead of Atium I suppose). But at this point I am not sure about what the real requirements are, I have two plausible ideas and both of them have pros and contros. Balancing the powers: The Preservation Investiture and Ruin Investiture have to be very similar in quantity(percentage). Treeshold of the two powers: The Preservation Investiture must be at least X and Ruin Investiture must be at least X (more investiture of P or R is right too). Now I will explain the global pros and contros in the theory and after the individual pros and contros of the case a and b. Pro: The Feruchemy could be “gifted” to the Terris People by Preservation through the Terris Prophecy directing some “patriarchs” to the Pits and give manipulating them to obtain the Atium (we know that the Pits was in the Terris land). In a close system, the initial catalyst of Feruchemy would be preserved quite good (while they began to cross the bloodlines, the power faded). Contro: The Hoid’s Feruchemy isn't easy to explain with this idea. Now examine the individual pros and contros of the case a and b. Case a: Balancing the Powers. Pro: Preservation may created the Terris People with the minimun quantity of his power to make them sentient. Therefore with less (if none) Allomantic’s potential and with a lower treeshold to develop the Feruchemy by adding Ruin’s power. A not Scadrial Human (like Hoid) has an very very low treshoold (or null). A bit of Preservation and a bit of Ruin could be enough, Ruin could be obtained through Atium and Preservation by the Mist (He could trick the Mist to obtain at least a tiny Preservation’s Power not enough for the Allomancy) The “Allomancy’s gene and Feruchemy’s gene don’t mix well together” are very likely to the opposite requirement to expression itself. The Ruin’s powers needed to a “not Terrisman” could be to much and lethal. A feruchemist could be the “best holder” to both Preservation and Ruin together. Contro: Rashek had an huge Preservation’s Power and mantained his Feruchemy, but maybe once you had the power, you can’t lose for just unbalancing the Investiture. Case b: Treeshold of the two powers Pro: Fullborn has no problem to exist. The “Atium’s Misting test” could be try to find a new potential Feruchemist as a source of Spike. Contro: Every nobles could potentially be a Feruchemist by eating atium (The Atium is very rare and expansive, but I think Rashek used this way to obtain Spikes for the Inquisitors). Hoid’s Feruchemy are less likely than the case a. Future Implication: With the Harmony’s Ascension now Scadrial has 2 type of Mists one of Preservation an one of Ruin and a new “god alloy”. By this theory the Harmonium could be use to became a Allomancer or Feruchemist (case a) or a Fullborn (case B ) What do you think about this theory ?
  3. Disclaimer: This is not a theory or a new idea, the purpose of this post is to make clarifications as to what a savant is, and explain a subtle difference between the personal effects of Allomancy and Feruchemy If you look in the Coppermind you will find that a savant is someone who has flared a metal for so long that their physiology changes to adapt. With Feruchemy the creation of a savant is impossible, technically. I believe that the use of Feruchemy makes anyone into a temporary savant, as their physiology changes. For example, Sazed's muscles grew larger when he saved Vin, and Wayne becomes more susceptible to sickness when storing healing (as it weakens his immune system). This means that Feruchemy will temporarily change an individuals physiology (or at least the physical, cognitive, and potentially hybrid do), while Allomancy will do it permanently.
  4. Shqueeves

    Feruchemy

It's common knowledge that iron pulls/steel pushes have a hard time influencing metal inside a person. Does feruchemy suffer from the same limitation? I know that that question is a little confusing, so I'll try to explain. Can a Feruchemist store an attribute in a metal that is piercing someone else's body?
  5. I know that it is widely accepted that the power of Allomancy comes from Preservation. This makes sense in that in order to become an Allomancer you must either ingest, or be a descendant from someone who has ingested, Lerasium. This idea is given further weight by the fact that Preservation gave a bit of himself in order to make humans more preservation minded. However, the nature of the shards of Preservation and Ruin, and their combination in Harmony, reject this idea. The easiest example of this is Ruin and his magic of Hemalurgy, power is taken and the result is less than before. Mathematically put, if you have starting power X and received power Y you would say that X > Y. In Feruchemy you give power to receive it back when needed, while in Allomancy you expend power, by burning metal, giving you the the variable Z for expended power. Mathematically put, Feruchemy would be X = Y and Allomancy would be modeled X + Z < Y. When you compare these mathematical breakdowns of Scadrial's magic systems to the shards present their, a different reality becomes apparent. With Feruchemy being the only magic system involving the preserving of power, it must be of Preservation. Whereas Allomancy involves the sacrificing of some power in order to gain more, implying it is of Harmony or, more accurately, a balance of the powers of Ruin and Preservation. This idea is given further credit by the fact that even though Preservation gave up some of his power to humans, the only people who cared about preservation as an attribute were the Terrismen, while people in other areas appear to have had a stronger tie to Ruin in their hearts, regardless of the presence of Preservation's power. With that in mind, the ingesting of Lerasium would increase the person's devotion to Preservation, allowing for an equal devotion to both shards, as well as an amount of power that comes directly from a shard. Thanks for looking at my theory. If you can show me any place where Brandon Sanderson has said anything that proves me wrong, please add a link in your post.
  6. Just wanted to pose a few questions about the "Allomantic Grenades", or the Ettmetal cubes that could simulate Allomancy (and Feruchemy). First, when the cube is first used, it is "Invested" with Chromium Allomancy, draining Wax's stores. However, I noticed that the cube does not touch Wax, as would be necessary with a Leecher. So why does it work? Later, when Wax is experimenting with it, the cube uses steel Allomancy as a filter for the power of the Ettmetal, but the cube somehow has the pushing power to move Wayne's metal belt and Wax's shotgun. Does the cube then replicate Wax's push force instead of using its own mass? Also, if it were using steel Allomancy wouldn't it be pushed out of Wayne's hand? If it does replicate Wax's push, could he increase his weight, then charge the cube with steel Allomancy, giving it a greater push force? Though it does not specifically mention the cube, it is probably a similar device, but the Set gets the ship to store its own weight so that it is lighter and easier for the ship to take off. There are a lot of implications here. Is the weight of the ship stored in a certain place? If the device is started in the same way by performing the Feruchemy, and could you use the device to make the ship heavier as well, or only if you had previously stored the ship's weight? Could someone store the ship's Identity then, store weight, creating an Identity-less metalmind of the ship's weight that the person could then use? If the ship can store weight, how would other things, such as health work with the ship? This topic is mostly to spur conversation and the flow of ideas about these curious devices, so let me know what you think...
  7. So, can I post a theory here, or what? (Just warning, like 60% of this is gonna be spoilers for Bands of Mourning so go read it if you haven't.) So everyone- let's talk about the Bands. Specifically the nicrosil portion. I think we can figure out what it does from watching Wax and Marasi use them. So when Wax takes the Bands, he can punch through pure rock with just allomancy alone, and drags an airship out of the sky. This obviously isn't normal allomancy or duralumin enhanced allomancy. We know that because marasi gets all of the metals off the guards. There wouldn't have been any duralumin. It's completely useless if you're just a misting. So he's doing all of that with just steel and iron which should be impossible- but wait! WoB is here to save the day! (I don't actually have this WoB but pshhh who needs correctly cited sources.) So I remember reading somewhere that Sanderson built into the magic systems of scadrial ways to enhance each other- allomancy boosts feruchemy through compounding, and feruchemy boosts allomancy by uuh.... the WoB didn't really say. But there has to be some way cuz the great Sanderson said so. So I looked through the metals chart and the only metal that really fits isn't nicrosil- which stores investiture (any cosmere magic). So we can tell how it works from Wax's point of view! Obviously it can give you the ability to burn metals or tap them (see: Wax burning iron or tapping zinc) but it can also affect how much power you can squeeze out of metal in allomancy. So that's how nicrosil feruchemy works! Spend time with weakened investiture (presumably) and you can tap to make it stronger. (Am I the only one that thinks coinshot-soulbearers would be terrifying? They would shred everything or throw tanks!) Any corrections or anything?
  8. Thanks for responding to my last post on my theories on iron. These are all of my theories with steel. I hope you like them! Steel is a really cool feruchemical metal, being very overpowered since you can store your physical speed in it. However, this makes you a snail anytime you store. But what if there was more use you could get out of storing into steel? When storing you speed goes down, so does that mean that your breathing and blood flow goes down? That would allow you to live underwater for one hundred times the normal time, not bleed out nearly as fast, and also not starve to death for about an entire year! Kind of crazy, right? My next theory is on tapping other metals while tapping steel. If you tap steel and go 2x as fast, then tap pewter, would your strength go down the normal 1x as fast? That would allow you to get more out of your other metals, effectively getting twice as strong, since you can spend twice the metal in that time and getting just as much done. My favorite part about this is that one of them has to be true. If your body functions go just as fast as your steel, then you can not get sick, not starve, not drown, and not bleed out, but if your body functions happen independent of your steel, then when tap any other metals, they decrease slower(effectively). Do you think that this is correct, or am I absolutely crazy? Thanks for replying in advance!
  9. I know this was likely discussed many times over the last 12 years but has anyone else noticed that all of the Symbols for the metallic arts have cross lines and at least in the more modern depictions are stylized to look like spikes? i realize this is a throwback to the Inquisitors and the Steel Ministry BUT is it possible that these cross lines could also indicate the Hemaluric bind points for those particular metals? I am going to dig into the remainder of the symbols and see if i can come up with a more intact theory here but i figured i figured i better check and find out if this is already trod ground.
  10. So we as of BoM we know it takes a full feruchemist to make other people feruchemist using aluminum and duralumin. With that revelation we kind of forgot about the ferrings, but even if the person is just an aluminum ferring he is still incredibly powerful. Supposedly the ferring while filling aluminum can use anyone's metalmind. With that in mind if an evil organization like the set get a aluminum ferring into their employ, they can round up some ferrings, imprison them, and force them to fill masterminds for the aluminum ferring. Not only can this ferring use all of the feruchelmy powers, he doesn't need to spend anytime filling them either.
  11. It seems I forgot various details and because of that I was under impression that for a group of four metals two steal human attributes, one steals Allomantic powers tied to metals in this group and one steals Feruchemical powers tied to metals in this group. It would work like that: tin and iron steal human attributes, while steel/pewter spikes steal Allomantic/Feruchemical powers of iron, steel, tin and pewter. This is clearly not the case. We know that since pewter steal Physical Feruchemical powers, it can also steal Feruchemical gold. (HoA epigraphs number 36 AND a WoB). But... many of the Feruchemical powers are Physical... how does that work? How are Feruchemical metals grouped? Which spikes steal which powers? Metal/Feruchemical power/Spike type Iron: Weight - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (probably) Steel: Physical speed - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (confirmed - Inquisitors had this power) Tin: Senses - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (probably) Pewter: Strength - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (confirmed - Inquisitors had this power) Zinc: Mental speed - Mental attribute : Brass spike (speculation) Brass: Warmth - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (speculation) Copper: Memories - Mental attribute : Brass spike (speculation) Bronze: Wakefulness - no idea. It can be both physical and mental. Probably mental, it'd fit nicely and complete mental attributes. Cadmium: Breath - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (speculation) Bendalloy: Nutrition - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (speculation) Gold: Health - Physical attribute : Pewter spike (confirmed - Inquisitors had this power + epigraphs + WoB) Electrum: Determination - Mental attribute : Brass spike (speculation) Those four are clearly Spiritual powers, so we don't know what spike to use: Chromium: Fortune Nicrosil: Investiture Aluminum: Identity Duraluminum: Connection So it seems that all of base metals Feruchemy is covered by three spikes (Physical powers, Mental powers, Spiritual powers). But going off what we know about Hemalurgy, there is bound to be four spikes of base sixteen stealing Feruchemical powers... EDIT: The question is: can Feruchemical powers even be grouped properly into four even groupings? Especially considering the fact that 'Hybrid' powers are in fact Physical powers and that one of them, Feruchemical gold is stolen by a pewter spike which makes it a Physical power?
  12. Hi, all! I've been thinking about feruchemy a lot recently, and I've decided to try to do a couple of theories on them. This is the first one, so feedback would be really great. IRON People seem to either really like this, or not pay any attention to it at all. I am definitely on the side of really liking it. I have two theories on this one. Brandon Sanderson has stated that iron allows you to store your mass into the metalmind, allowing you to become lighter or heavier. This also means that iron effects density, since density is mass/volume, and the volume of the item(in this case, a human) doesn't change. With that in mind, you could(with enough skill) make yourself as dense as the air around you(1.225 kg/m^3) and effectively fly. Admittedly, would have to store 99.875% of your weight, and you wouldn't have much control, but you would be able to change your altitude by making yourself denser or less dense than air, and then as dense as air. this would allow you to store into pewter, steel, zinc, a little bit of bronze, and several of the other hard to store metals. My next theory is that of durability. As an object gets denser, it also gets more durable, as fewer things are able to pass through it and break it. Now, if you were to tap iron enough, would you be able to make your skin dense enough to stop a bullet? This gets cooler as you make yourself the bullet. Now, in the books(don't have a copy by me, so I don't know exactly where) Wax says something about his velocity not changing when he taps or stores in the air. In order for that to happen, his energy needs to go WAY up. E=MC^2, right? So now you have a super high energy bullet proof person. Are my theories correct, or is there something I'm missing?
  13. Do we know any instances where that we've seen a Feruchemist use Connection, Investiture, Fortune, or Determination? I'm guessing Hoid used them at some point, but don't have any proof :/
  14. Hello everybody! A thought tickled my brain after reading a couple of WOBs and I thought I'd pop my head up to see what folks have to say about it. First the WOBs: WOB #1: WOB #2: So we know that Hoid pops up in many places, interacts with important people, and gathers cool stuff in order to achieve some desired outcome. We also know that he uses feruchemy order to know where to go. However, it had previously always been discussed and speculated that Hoid obtained his feruchemy on Scadrial or from some Scadrian artifact. However, the more recent of the two WOBs above (that would be #2 from Librarypalooza back in Feb of this year) indicates that his ability to know where to go is "innate". This suggests that Hoid had his feruchemy from birth (since that is what 'innate' means). However we know that Hoid predates Scadrial since he was present at the shattering of Adonalsium (and Scadrial, or at least its flora, fauna, and metallic arts, was created by the combined efforts of two of the shards). This means that he predates Scadrian feruchemy. So, is feruchemy a native Yolan art or did Brandon misuse the term 'innate'?
  15. Maybe it's just me, but I get a very different picture from what I've been reading on 17th shard about Nicrosil, and what I'm reading in the books. I think a few of us may have misunderstood what 'stores investiture' may actually mean... this is probably a function of our terminology more than anything else: From BoM kindle p.67, VanDell's lecture to Wax and the group: I would posit that (autocorrect keeps making me put necrosis herrings lol) Nicrosil Ferrings can't store and release what we generally refer to as investiture (Breaths, Stormlight, whatever), but instead, being one of the spiritual metals, you have the ability to narrow (store) and widen (withdraw) the cracks in your spirit web to allow you the potential to access more/less investiture safely at a time. In an unkeyed Nicrosil metalmind, this would effectually enhance the ability of someone who already had magic-potential, and possibly even create an ability where one didn't exist (I would personally put that more into Connection - duralumin, but I could see it either way). Please, when responding on this topic, due to the amount of conflicting opinion I've seen on the site, try to source WoB as much as possible. I'd love to get a proper understanding on Nicrosil Feruchemy (and the other Spiritual Feruchemy too). Thanks!
  16. I'm still rather unclear as to how Aluminum Feruchemy works individually. I understand how it worked in BoM, but am not sure how an aluminum Ferring would work. Any clarification would be lovely. Thank you.
  17. So, basically, I was just wondering if there is a definite answer to this question; How does Steel Feruchemy work? The title really says it all. I've looked around, but have not found a definite answer, and was wondering if anyone knew. If not, I have an idea, but I'd like to make sure that there is not another, correct answer, before I make a fool of myself in the Cosmere Theories section.
  18. Hey Sharders! Just something fun to do, and I wanted to see what you could come up with. Basically, you take any superhero, like Hulk for instance, and then translate their powers into the Mistborn magic system. For Hulk, I think it fits that he is a Pewter Compounder. For some heroes, it's okay to break the rules-ish. Take Iron Man--He would need both Allowmantic steel and iron to "fly", and he's Iron Man, so naturally he would use some spikes. Obviously, some powers can't really translate. Feruchemy in Green, Allowmancy in Blue, and Hemalurgy in Red. Examples: Hulk--Pewter, Pewter. Iron Man--Steel, Iron, Tin. You don't have to use this system if you know all the terms and such, like Coinshot. Or you can just say F-Atium ect. Whatever works best for you! Have fun, maybe! Edit: If you don't know Marvel/DC, I guess you can do other things, like anime, but as a last resort.
  19. I had this FTL idea since I read bands of mourning and secret history. My idea is based on feruchemy using machines similar to the one we saw in Bands of Mourning. We need a iron compounding machine fueled by self burning metal. We need a lot of fuel to be effective because we want to create a singularity with great amount of mass. If machine can focus enough mass in a small area it should be able to collapse space time but we still need another exit for this method to be viable as wormhole. We create another singularity at the same time with 1 difference. It will be tied to a strong Connection filled machine which is filled in another planet. When machine starts to tap Connection during the creation moment of second singularity it should theoretically create the singularity near the target planet rather than the original planet. The Connection filing device should be taken to target planet through normal worldhoping ways and will be filled there and brought back before we attempt wormhole creation. I think there should be some ways to stabilize wormhole and use it a stationary travel conduit between 2 planets.
  20. Random question, could you selectively store a feruchemical attribute? For example, storing only the warmth in your arm or only the strength in your legs. On that matter, could you selectively tap? Tap brass to make only your hands warm or use pewter to make only your legs strong? I seem to remember something in the MAG (Not sure if it'c canon or not) that a brass compounding feat is to release warmth from your hands to melt metals. Would that be a viable option?
  21. So simple question, what kind of Connection does duralumin actually default to? The Ars Arcanum implies connection to other people, Bands of Mourning implies location.
  22. I had some thoughts and theories about possible effects of feruchemical powers and I decided to share it with You in hope of some brainstorming. Steel Feruchemy (spoiler to SoS) steel feruchemy seems more similar to time stopping than a speed travel. It seems preaty OP, because super speed requires also muscle memory, and certain responce to sences to maneuver. Thar would indicate that a steel ferrin with a lot of full metalminds just kill anybody with sword or knife. Although in Mistborn 1 Sazed said storing it is more difficult than other aspects. That leads me to belive you have to walk or run to store speed. That would set certain limitations on tapping. Basicaly it wouldnt affect any type of movement than walking and running. So in a sword fight you could move your position a lot faster, byt not thrust or cut with any extra speed - except of beter charge. Byt it would give you good way of suprizing oponnent, changenging beween long distance and short distance combat and backstabbing. Pewter Feruchemy There I basicaly wonder if a lot of pewter tapping can make you grow your bones larger. This is not completely irrational considering that tapping pewter allmost always causes growth of skinn tissue. Feruchemist are supposed to be able to tap metalminds at any rate and withought bone growth rapid tapping of pewter would change you into a giant swedish meatball. The idea came into my mind when Sazed said that while tapping strenght of five men he was similar to colos in size. I do belive that he didn't meant size, but I realized - why not. Feruchemy and hemalurgy of strenghth seem to have similar basic funcrion - rip strenght out, and then give it back. It would affect bones a lot lighter than hemalurgy, but it could anyway. Enchanced Feruchemy - Spoilers to BoM
  23. Hello everyone here is what I'm going to ask you: pick 2 powers from magic systems in the cosmere, tell me which ones they are and explain why you picked them up.( it can be two powers from a same magic system( feruchemy pewter and gold for example) For me it's allomantic steel and feruchemic iron because in battle you can just fly around if you're a powerful enough allomancer and if someone tries to shoot you, you can change your weight and you can make yourself lighter to fall more slowly so that the shoot misses because you weren't where your opponent thought you were.
  24. So I don't know if anyone has discussed this possibility before, but the Bands of Mourning seem like they could be replicated relatively easily for an artifact of that magnitude of power Step 1. Create an exact physical copy of the bands Step 2. Compound Nicrosil and put the extra investiture into the new copy Step 3. Profit??
  25. So, what kind of things involving Metalborn would you want to see? (or even without Metalborn, but set on Scadrial) Any kind of scene, be it action (fight, chase, novel application of powers) or non-action (passing a law enforcing Metalborn registration, or idea for a new transport system), anything. I've seen people comment that there should be a Steelpushing fight on skyscraper construction site. I personally want to see two Coinshots/Lurchers going at it without any metal on them... except the fact that somebody detonated a metal dust grenade in the room (like that silver dust bomb from 1:58) so the room is filled to the roof with metal dust. I think that it would be quite awesome to see more of using metal dust. Also, molten metal. As for the another idea, BoM spoilers
