  1. Has anyone here been watching these films? I just purchased the extended edition of the first film and saw the second recently and was mildly annoyed the delayed the final film until December of 2014 However, that being said I loved the film, it will probably make Tolkien fanatics weep in more than one way but it was a top notch film overall! Beautifully put together and beautifully coordinated with a wonderful use of CGI. I've got to say I haven't seen a better film in ages! This is one thing I have to give producers credit for. (sigh)
  2. Greetings to all you lovely fantasy fans. I have attained Enlightenment upon registering on this website. I live in Australia, Melbourne and I have been an avid fantasy and sci-fi fan since I was a child. I remember discovering the Deltora Quests in my primary school library which set me adrift in the wonderful world of dreams and fantasy. The most profound moment of my reading life was when i started reading the Pellinor Quartet by Allison Croggon when i was 12. The first book, The Gift, was among the first high fantasy books i've read, and i found myself believing that the world Croggon crafted was a world that existed prior to the modern civilization. I searched for the poems and epics the book quoted in the local library, and, much to my dismay, wasn't able to find them. Since then, i have included fiction and fantasy as a part of my daily diet. I would consume anything i could get my hands, be it books, novels, comics or manga. Below are lists of my favourites: Favourite works of fiction 1. Tower of God by SIU 2. The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson 3. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson 4. The Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett 5. The Empire Trilogy by Raymond E. Feist & Jimmy Wurt 6. The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson 7. Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson 8. The Sandman by Neil Gaiman 9. Spice and Wolf by Isuna Hasekura 10. The Horus Heresy (Warhammer 40k Favourite authors 1. SIU (Slave In Utero) - Author/Artist of Tower of God 2. Brandon Sanderson 3. Peter V. Brett 4. Neil Gaiman 5. Joss Whedon - Firefly, Serenity 6. Isuna Hasekura - Spice and Wolf Favourite TV Shows/Anime 1. Ghost in the Shell 2. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind 3. Firefly by Joss Whedon 4. Serenity by Joss Whedon 5. Spice and Wolf 6. Psychopass 7. Game of Thrones I am also an active gamer, with most the competitive success in FPS titles such as Quake 3 and Counter-Strike 1.6 I don't play competitively anymore, only for leisure. I currently play League of Legends, Osu! and Starcraft II. If anybody chances across this and would like to converse with me (on books, comics, Animes, Mangas, T.V shows or games), contact me here or by Skype. I would love to know somebody of similar interests. Glad to be a part of this awesome community! 3. This is Chapter 9 from Shrouds, a fantasy mystery. This chapter closes act 1. Brief recap: Mahau, a god of vengeance, and his priestess Neda have been asked to investigate three gods disappearances which turned into murder investigations. The third body is yet to be found when other gods disappear, menacing the balance of the whole pantheon. I intend to stop submitting the book there. I might submit the synopsis later. If you have special comments on this last installment, or questions about where the book goes from here, don't hesitate to ask.
  4. This is chapter 8 from Shrouds, a fantasy mystery. In the previous chapters, Mahau - a god of vengeance - was asked to investigate three gods disappearances. After visiting two temples and uncovering two gods bodies, he concludes someone is killing off gods. The whereabouts of the third disappeared god are still unknown. Arlon - a disinherited god - joined forces with Mahau in order to prove his own innocence. In the last chapter, he barely escaped a murder attempt made against him. In this chapter, Mahau goes to report his lack of findings to his superiors. I hope you'll enjoy it. All comments are welcome.
  5. Does anyone know of any non-urban fantasy that have political structures where the political structures are different from a fantasy version of western europe? I am getting bored with the constant 'my lady/my lord' my king, etc... bits. Something with different political structures? This is getting old. People seem to get more innovative and away from the traditional sheperd hero, but they stick with the same medievil/royalty structure. Anything with republics? Democracy? Military dictatorships? or anything non-European? Daniel Abraham did this a little bit in his first series. I am looking for stuff that is considerably different and not a small twist. Anything with different levels of technology? Brandon did this to some degree in one of his more recent books. I prefer non-steampunk fantasy. Any fantasy books where technology actually advances over time and things change? One of the recurring motiffs of fantasy is that 1000s of years pass and nothing changes. (unless its steampunk). maybe iron age fantasy? (pre-steel. Roman/Greek, Middle Chinese). Any fantasy at all with African or native american cultures? Orson Scott Card did a fantasy series that combined a US Western and Fantasy. Don't like westerns. Prefer a whole different world.
  6. This is chapter 7 from SHROUDS, a fantasy mystery. In the previous chapters, Mahau - a god of vengeance - was asked to investigate three gods disappearances. After visiting two temples and uncovering two gods bodies, he concludes someone is killing off gods. Arlon - a disinherited god - joined forces with Mahau in order to prove his own innocence. In the last chapter, he barely escaped a murder attempt made against him. In this chapter, Mahau goes to visit the third and last temple, expecting to find another body. I hope you'll enjoy it. All comments are welcome.
  7. Hi, This is the first chapter from my second novel SHROUDS (2nd draft). SHROUDS is an adult fantasy mystery with lots of dead bodies and other occasional adult themes. In this first chapter, I'm introducing the magic system and two main characters : Mahau and Arlon. I am primarily interested in comments about worldbuilding and characters, not so much about grammar for now, but really any comment is helpful. I hope you'll enjoy it.
  8. Hi, This is the sixth chapter from Shrouds, a fantasy mystery. What happened so far : gods have been disappearing and Mahau was asked to investigate. So far, he found two murdered gods. Arlon joined forces with Mahau in order to prove he wasn't involved with the disappearances. I'm interested as always in any comments you might have.
  9. Hi, This is chapter 4, second part from Shrouds, a fantasy mystery. Mahau, god of vengeance was asked to investigate three gods disappearances. In the previous chapter, he uncovered the first body. Arlon, a mostly dishinherited regional god asked Mahau to prove he didn't have anything to do with the disappearances. In Chapter 5, first part, Mahau and Arlon met before going to the second crime scene and Arlon almost strangled Mahau. Now, they're going together to the next crime scene. I hope you'll enjoy it.
  10. Hi, This is chapter 5, first part from Shrouds, a fantasy mystery. Mahau, god of vengeance was asked to investigate three gods disappearances. In the previous chapter, he uncovered the first body. Arlon, a mostly dishinherited regional god asked Mahau to prove he didn't have anything to do with the disappearances. In Chapter 5, Mahau and Arlon meet before going to the second crime scene. I hope you'll enjoy it.
  11. This is chapter 2 for Shrouds. Last time, I introduced two gods : Mahau and Arlon. Now, I'm getting into the priesthood with the third POV Character Neda. I'd love to have your thoughts on her character and relationship with her god.
  12. I've been agonizing about not having a very good magic system for my novels, but several months ago, that finally changed. Below is a set of guidelines and lists for my magic system, known as the Nine Disciplines. This is the magic system I am using for the epic fantasy trilogy I am writing, The Proanadi. The way it works is thus: any known magic-user has access to one, several, or all of these Disciplines. All "magic" as people know it derives itself ultimately from the Nine Disciplines. Where magic-users differ is WHERE they get their power from--their power source. There can also be differences in areas of focus, and ways that they use the different disciplines (because, the possibilities within the Disciplines are almost unlimited). Here are the Nine Disciplines below, grouped as they would be commonly, with three groups of three: Material 1 Physical (change in physical matter) 2 Sensory (change in perception) 3 Elemental (manipulation of the elements) Ultramaterial 1 Influential (change in feeling) 2 Intellectual (change in thought) 3 Essential (manipulation of life energies) Supernal 1 Continuous (disruptions in space or time) 2 Creative (creation of new energy or matter) 3 Potential (manipulation of force) Examples of something being done with each Discipline below: Physical: Enhances your (or another's) strength Sensory: Tricking another individual's perceptions, making you effectively invisible Elemental: Shooting fire from your hands Influential: Providing a morale boost to your comrades Intellectual: Tampering with someone's memory Essential: Bringing someone back to life Continuous: Teleportation (space) or slowing time (time) Creative: Creating food and water out of nothing Potential: Throwing up a wall of pure force Now, there are many different limitations and tricks associated with each Discipline, and points where they overlap, but different Disciplines work better in different situations. Please feel free to comment with ideas for changes, possible abilities within each Discipline, or discrepancies as you see them. Where the line is drawn between the different types of magic-users in the world comes from one major thing (though there are other, less important differences): Power Source. Where do they derive their power from? Below is a list of some D&D classes (not all of these are actually going to be used in the books, as that would kind of be plagiarizing, but it provides a good example for how different magic-users get their power) and some other magic-users and their power sources: Wizards – Power through learning (words and rituals that channel the energy) Clerics – Power through prayer* Sorcerers – Power through lineage (having some form of magical creature’s blood in your DNA) Favored Soul – Power through divine connection* Dragosamns (reptilian humanoid shamans) – Power through dragon totems (similar to Stewardic power)** Roshi (short reptilian humanoids) – Power through Chaos** Druids – Power through natural connection and energy Talir-Knights (though the original users of this form of power source are many of Serragon’s “monsters”, such as dragons) – Power through one’s own energy Demons – Power through destruction (breaking down of matter or energy) * Both Clerics and Favored Souls gain their ultimate power from the Stewards (gods). Only the means are different. ** Although both Roshi and Dragosamns gain their abilities through their dragon blood, their actual power sources come from outside their bloodline, unlike sorcerers. If you have any questions about who or what these types are, feel free to ask. That is the extent of it, I guess. There is much more to nail down, obviously, but that is why I post this on here, FOR IDEAS! Thanks for all of your time, and God bless!
  13. This post is intended for next week. I accidentally sent out my work prematurely, however feel free to post your comments. They are much appreciated. To clarify, Song of the Wild Sea is the name of the whole series while Tameless is the title of the first book in the series.
