  1. I read Mistborn: Secret History before I read Elantris, so I didn't realize that the Ire were Elantrians until I read through it again. I know that they are from Elantris, and were trying to capture Preservation's Shard, but I don't know who they are. Is the Ire (possibly) another name for one of the other groups we've seen? Is there a WoB on this?

    Dor's Strength

Hi, I'm a little versed in the Cosmere by reading this forum some, a bit of the Coppermind, and some WoB threads. I have read Stormlight Archives, Warbreaker and Elantris; I need to read Mistborn to get more versed in the Cosmere. I'm just curious if anyone knows why Elantris' Dor is so stupendously overpowered compared to the other magic systems? Returned can heal one person, and Awakeners are limited by amount of breath/color on hand. Fabrials are limited by the size of the gem/amount of stormlight contained, and Radiants have a limited amount of abilities and again stormlight is a major limiting factor. The Dor is an incredible well of power, just waiting to be tapped by Aons and other magic channeling on Sel as long as the user knows the proper Aons, modifiers and has the time to draw it. It has been in use for an unknown amount of time but is just burning to cross over. How is it so powerful?
  3. What is Investiture? For such a foundational aspect of the Cosmere, it is not always clarified what exactly the word means. In this episode we talk about the meaning of the word and stare some specific examples of Investiture on several major Shard Worlds. Elsric also shares some of his personal terminology about the different types of Investiture and the ways that people can access the power. To read the story about how I worked with Brandon Sanderson to make this series, look at my post here: Please remember to check out the amazing art that was shared with this episode and let the artists know how much we appreciate what they have done! Subscribe for more updates and videos every week about great stories and funny moments. I hope you enjoy what I can do! Here is the transcript for this episode: As I have said before, my father was a scholar at heart. He was taken with locking himself away with his books and a chalkboard in the family library. As I grew he took it upon himself to teach me what he could. However, I never had any formal lessons because he was often so scattered in his research projects that he would shut himself in his study and turn us away having completely forgotten that he was the one to invite us to join him an hour earlier. Eventually my siblings and I would catch him and we would dive into the lessons as best we could. He was a soft-spoken man, but he was truly brilliant. On rare occasions, noble scholars from far away would stop by and converse with my Father. I’m not entirely sure what his specialty was, but based on his contraptions I think it had something to do with Engineering. I will never forget the phrase he often repeated during our studies. He said, “In all things there is balance if you look closely enough. Cause and Effect, Push and Pull, Action and reaction.” He said that there was no better laboratory than nature, for all things followed the fundamental laws that ran all of creation. I wish I could share with him what I know now. After all these years, I finally see what he was trying to teach me. The miraculous things that I witnessed on other worlds are bound by natural rules and there is an accounting for all the incredible abilities that people can wield. Investiture is just one word to describe the fundamental power by which men bend the forces of the Cosmere with intent to their will. Words like Sand Shaping, Burning Metals, Drawing Aons, and Surgebinding are all in effect the manipulation of Investiture. When something or someone is considered Invested, they hold a portion of Divine power or potential. Stormlight is possibly the best example because the body literally thrums with unbridaled power that is then translated into a Focus by the user via a bond to a spren. When I say Focus, I mean the nature and shape that the power takes. On Sel, the Elantrians use the complex shapes and markings of Aon Dor to dictate the shape and power of the Investiture. While this is a complex system to master, it holds the most fluidity. In application it is near limitless in what it can do with the right knowledge. However, their power is, for the most part, limited to the geographical location of Sel, even to specific continents. I would call this an Open Concept Manifestation, because it really has no set shape or application, although the time and learning necessary to access the power of the dor is a distinct downside to such an adaptable system. On the other hand, the best example of a Closed Concept Manifestation of Investiture can be found in Alloymancy. By its nature, Allowmancy is limited by very harsh rules. The metals that can be burned to access Investiture need to be pure and properly mixed as alloys in order to work. In fact, an allomancer who burns metals that are impure or improperly crafted can get sick or die from the mistake. The benefit is that the powers granted by Aloymancy are dependable and simple. However, there is little to nothing more to be learned. All Alloymancers are limited to the powers of the metals, no matter the skill or experience of the user. This means quick and adaptable powers, but sever limitations in shaping the Investiture that gives them power. The application of each type of Investing can range to fit a variety of settings, but each one must take a unique coarse to the eventual goal. The paths to Investiture vary in form and execution just as how languages differ between different nations. All Language seeks to bring together understanding, but the execution can be very different between different peoples and are usually not compatible with each other. I would assume that Investiture would be the same, although I am not sure if there are limitations to using said powers. I know for instance that the proper metals and alloy mixes are useful to Alloymancers no matter where they physically are. I’ve seen that Elantrians can employ Investiture outside of Sel, although I am unsure how they overcome the natural geographical limits to their powers. In fact, I think that travel in the Cosmere would be impossible if the beings who traverse it ultimately did not have access to the powers of their homelands. It is clear to me that the power of the Spiritual Realm is accessable in all places in the Cosmere. Unlike the Physical and Cognitive realms, it seems there is no apparent change in the ability to access the Spiritual realm no matter the location of the individual. So the limitation is found in the abilities to access the power itself Each world is governed by a different set of natural laws that determine who can access the power and how that investiture can be used. On Nalthis, each person is born with an endowment of Investiture called breath. It is a small connection to the Cosmere itself and has little effect. But it can be given to others, and with enough Breath one can command once living objects into servitude. Words and symbols hold the key on Sel, where elantrians draw patterns in the air to give shape to the Dor, and Dakor etch their will onto the bones. There are whispers of other arts with ink and blood that shape the fabric of reality itself, but I have not seen this personally. But what all these forms share is the dependence of a physical drawing that shapes the Investiture into what they need. There is a world called Taldain that I only just heard about. I hope to visit it sometime soon, but there is very little known about it yet. However, there are hints of shapers of the sand, who manipulate and mold the sand found on that world. I imagine it would be a beautiful art to observe. On Scadrial, the people use the metallic arts. The use of metals manifests physical, mental, enhancement, and temporal power through three known forms. Aloymancers draw Investiture directly from the source and use the power in a limited fashion. Ferochemists storm their natural attributes by saving them up into the metals, using them like the gemstones on Roshar to store the abilities for later use, and can use them in an accelerated rate. And then there is Hemalergy, darkest of the arts that I know, which destroys life to steal power from the sacrifice, to then spike it into another’s soul. On Roshar, as I said, the spren form a bridge between the Investiture of Stormlight for use by the Radiant to whom they are bonded. The Parshendi seem to be able to bond spren as well, but it is not the same as the nahel bond, and I don’t know by what method they do this. The unknown bond is actually a focus of my study, for I feel that this is critical to understanding the struggles we are facing in this war. It might even be the key to our salvation. I am positive that there are other worlds that I have not even heard of. If there is one thing that I hope for, it’s that I can continue to learn more about the incredible abilities and peoples of the Cosmere. Despite the danger I am currently in, I am living life again. I never thought that the struggles and danger here would awaken my soul. Elsric
  4. The Supremacy of Arelon Elantris will not exist for many more centuries. The great land of Arelon is in peril, it has been split up into 28 small countries and is on the brink of utter destruction from neighboring lands. One ruler must step up and unite these countries under one great banner. One great leader to take Arelon to a new era of peace and prosperity. The task will not be easy as each country will fight tooth and nail to become the victor, however only a few will survive. Arelon was once a great nation, however religious unrest drove it to annihilation. 28 different religions emerged and conflict soon ensued. Eventually the fighting got so bad that the different religions sectioned themselves off from one another and become their own countries. As time passed some religions became more tolerable to each other but none would forfeit the power of being its own country. Im the old scrolls of Arelon a prophecy was found that one great ruler would unite the land once again. Thus began a long, cold, bitter war that would spread death, destruction and deceit through the once sacred landscape. Every country proclaimed their leader to be the “Child of Prophecy”. The history books tell a different story… This game is based on World Domination. There are 28 regions in this world, any region that is not occupied by a player will be an NPC nation. The win condition in this game is to own 50% or more of all regions. A Map of the world will be provided and you will be assigned a region. Rules: Buildings, Research and People Every nation starts out with Money, Military, Technology and Philosophy based upon region. Buildings: You can choose to build buildings which can be used for various actions. Max 3 buildings per region. Workshops: These will increase the income of your country. Cost 5 wealth to build. Will give +2 wealth per turn Barracks: These will be used to train troops. Cost 5 wealth to build. Will give +3 Army Power per turn. Colleges: These will be used to research different subjects (Limit of 1 Colleges per Region). Cost 8 wealth to build. Research time varies. Church: Can be used to train Missionaries and Templars. Cost 8 wealth to build. Can train a Missionary or Templar once every other turn. Cost 3 Wealth to train. All buildings can be upgraded. The effect of the upgrade will be revealed upon completion. Research: Military: You can gain military by training soldiers in your barracks. The barracks can be upgraded to produce more military per turn. Army’s will require upkeep which depends on the size of the army ex.) An Army of 12 units has an upkeep of 3 wealth per turn. Battles between Armies will be decided by a dice roll with appropriate percentages given to each army. Technology: Technology can be researched in 2 categories: Military and Economy. Military technology will give an Army a bonus which will be taken into account in battles. Economy technology will reduce the upkeep of running the country and increase your income each turn. Philosophy: Philosophy can be researched to appease your citizens. The new laws formed will make your citizens less likely to have a rebellion. This will also give you access to change taxes in your regions, the tax levels are High (+5 wealth per turn), Medium (+2 wealth per turn) or Low (+0 wealth per turn). Citizen happiness will change with tax policy (the lower the tax the happier the people). People: Missionaries: Can be used to secretly travel to enemy regions and convert the people to your regions religion. This will cause unrest in the citizens, raising the possibility of Revolution. 5% chance of being discovered and killed per turn. Templars: Can be used to assassinate Generals, Missionaries or other Templars. Assassination of Generals will cause that army to lose power. 15% chance of success. General: Head of the Army and Leader of troops, if he is killed his men waver and lose their will to fight, causing a reduction in the army’s power. Rebellions: If the citizens of a region get too unhappy, they will rebel. This will cause all production in the region to halt until the rebellion is dealt with. You can use Taxes and Philosophy to appease the citizens in a region. Location and Moving Your location will be given to you on the map. The time it takes for Armies and People to get where they are going depends on how close to your region the destination is. The further the destination the more turns it takes to get there and execute the action. You cannot move through a nations border without making an agreement with that nation first. Should you not make an agreement you will go to war with that nation. Armies and Battles All armies will be given a Power level. This is how strong they are. This level is affected by the number of troops, technology and if they have a general or not. Generals can be bought; every Army can have 1 general. The cost of a general will depend on how powerful the army is, the stronger the army the cheaper the general. The general will give an army a bonus. Battles will be decided by a dice roll. Percentage of victory will be decided by how powerful the 2 armies fighting are ex.) Army 1 has 12 power and Army 2 has 24 power, Army 2 has a 66% chance of victory while Army 1 has a 33% chance of victory. If an army is defending in its own region, then it may be given a bonus for terrain familiarity Should you use 2 armies to attack 1 army, the 2 attacking armies will gain a bonus. Should a Multi-Army battle occur the percentages will be given proportionately to power. Alliances and Agreements Alliances can be made, as it is possible for 2 countries to both control 50% of the regions, however they must be made public and should you break an alliance your country will lose X wealth per turn for 6 turns. The amount will be decided by a dice roll. An alliance allows the 2 countries to travel between each other’s borders without penalty and both parties will be able to give their ally 10 Army power per turn or 8 wealth per turn. Trade agreements can also be made these will gain your country 5 wealth per turn. Should a trade agreement be broken your country will lose X wealth per turn for 3 turns. The amount will be decided by a dice roll. A military access agreement can be made to allow Armies to travel through non-ally regions. Map: Hello all! Me and Elkannah are going to Co-Gm this game. We just think this is a really interesting game and wanted to try it out. The cycles will end at 8pm MST on Sunday and Wednesday of every week. The game will start once we have about 12 players. If you are interested please join! Also help us spread the word and get others to join. Hope to see you all on your path to world domination! Player List
  5. So I was thinking about the Horneater pools and "Luna'aiki," or Hoid. And then I read the ending of the tenth anniversary of Elantris, which has a bonus ending of Hoid talking to a dark Aon and at the end, he jumped into the pool that dissolves Elantrians and disappeared. So, I thought that Worldhoppers may use "pools" to travel worlds. The pool for Roshar is the Horneater pools, the pool for Sel is the human-dissolving pool, the pool for Luthadel is an obscure reference in Shadows of Self. During one of the newspaper clippings, there was a story about a man who got lost and found a pool in a forest. By the side of it was a twisted creature with a big, ornate mask. I believe this was either a Worldhopper or one of the people form the South from Bands of Mourning. So, am I being stupid? Or could this possibly be correct?
  6. Normally I'm incredibly against rereading books. But with anything written by Sanderson, my opinion changes. There is just something about the way he writes that allows me to enjoy rereads as much, if not more than the first time. It might be the way he makes characters so believable and human, it might be the way every world he makes seems so real. It might be the way I can find a way to connect with almost all of his characters. Or maybe I just like the mystery of knowing he has the entire Cosmere planned out, and know close to nothing about it. But what I want to focus on here, is just a collection of all the excellent foreshadowing Sanderson does in his works. I'm currently almost done with my fifth reread of Warbreaker, and I still am finding things he foreshadowed that I had never picked up on before. So as you find foreshadowed events, or reveals in your rereads, please post them here and I'll keep updating this post so there can be a collection. I wish I had more quotes to start this with, but I'm sure everyone on the forums will be eager to contribute . I hope everyone finds this aspect of Sanderson's writing as intriguing as I do and hopefully this can turn into a pretty exhaustive list! Basically I'm just looking for quotes or specific situations that help the reader find out what is going to happen later in the books. Not so much things that hint towards the greater Cosmere, but the outcome of the specific book or series. Please give a chapter + quote or situation so I can put them in order! 7. Today I was re-reading Secret History and I noticed something I missed at my first reading: This part made me think in another way about Ire's glowing drink. Of course they are Elantrian and they need the Dor to keep their abilities. This is why at a first reading, the first think that came to my mind was about "they drink liquid Dor to sustain themself". But this sentence shows a strong likeleness from the Ire's Drink and the Connection's Orb. Or at least Kelsier saw a connection (i know bad joke) between the two liquid with only a difference about quality. He may not be an expert but in his Cognitive Shadow form, He shows some intuitive understanding of the Cosmere's Mechanics. Therefore I began to think: It's possible the Ire's drink isn't Dor or raw Investiture but instead it's "just" Connection to their homeland (Sel or more specific Elantris) and they use it to enhance their connection to the Dor and recive it so far in the Cosmere. Has this idea some merit or it's just a baseless speculation ?
  8. Something interesting hit me on my recent reading of Elantris. Why is Hoid mentioned here at all? Prior to the 10th Anniversary edition, we had no real understanding of why he was meddling on Sel, save that he was apparently known as a street beggar for at least 10 years. What else happened 10 years prior to the events of this book? The Shaod. The Reod. AonDor stops working the way it should. The chasm appeared in Arelon. We know that this earthquake that caused the chasm line was the result of some kind of "unnatural occurance," meaning that something "meddled" with something (we don't know what) in Arelon. Also: The chasm, which occurred only 10 years prior, along with the Shaod/Reod, was not the result of Odium's visit to Sel, which would have taken place hundreds of years prior to the events of the book. Hoid seems to have been hanging out on the streets of Kae for 10 years. Things with Elantris went downhill 10 years ago. An oddly specific coincidence, no? In the postscript of the 10th Anniversary edition of Elantris: My theory summarized: Hoid, in his attempt to become an Elantrian, caused the Shaod/Reod (whether on purpose or by accident, I do not know). Once his mess is resolved, or perhaps once he sees that his plan did not work out the way he thought it would,
  9. The reason Elantris stopped working properly was because the shape of the land, meaning the shape of the aon on which Elantris was patterned, had changed. This obviously speaks to a very intentional design of the city of Elantris, one focused on a specific pattern. The city is obviously much older than we know (or even the people of Raoden's time know), but how old, and where did it come from? This idea of a city laid out in a specific way sparked a connection in my mind to the Dawncities on Roshar. They too had interesting, intricate patterns to them, and the cites were believed to be very, very old. I wonder, did the same group of people who built Elantris on Sel also happen to build/influence the Dawncities on Roshar?
  10. I just finished rereading Elantris for the 5th time and for some reason I got the feeling that somehow she was more than the books lets on. Do we know anything more about her than what the book mentions?
  11. We have been insanely busy at Hoid's Secret Base (or the 17th Shard HQ) recently, so we have a huge deal of news to talk about. Today, we will be talking about a more precise Stormlight 3 release date (it's later than you would like), a sweet, sweet preview of the White Sand graphic novel, and the second printing of the Elantris leatherbound which you can order right now. Stormlight Three Now to be Released Fall 2017 Revealed in the Calamity signing in Houston, Texas, Stormlight 3 will now be out in 2017. This is a bit later than the State of the Sanderson 2015 implied initially. In that older post, Brandon thought we would see it in Fall 2016, with the caveat that his team warned him that that would not be realistic, and so we would see it in 2017 instead. I am sure many of you were hoping on an early 2017 release, but it appears that it will be Fall 2017. This, I am sure, is disappointing. You might wonder why it is taking so long, and why Brandon has so many other projects on his plate. I would like to say that Brandon was extremely rushed on both Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I think we would all prefer that he gets these huge, colossal books correct, and not have him need to change the ending, like he did with Words of Radiance. All this means is that even if the first draft gets done this summer, there needs to be a lot of revision and editing to make sure he gets it right. As for why he works on other projects, he's said many times that working on other books keeps him fresh. If he didn't write other books, that wouldn't actually speed up him writing Stormlight 3. We would just have times where we don't get any Brandon stories at all. I think this all works out, in the end. White Sand Preview, Coming in June io9 has posted an extensive (and exclusive) preview of the White Sand graphic novel, which is set in the cosmere on a planet called Taldain. This was the story that Brandon wrote that got him his agent, Joshua Bilmes, but was never published. Now we see more of it, and it's pretty cool. We get to see a ton of pages from White Sand, and the first volume is coming out in June! Exciting. White Sand's graphic novel is being produced by Dynamite Entertainment, with writer Rik Hoskin, artist Julius Gopez, and colorist Ross Campbell transforming the source material into the graphic novel format. You can be sure we will keep you updated on our first look into this important planet. (It's where the Ars Arcanum author is from!) Elantris Leatherbound Back in Stock We knew the Elantris Anniversary Leatherbound Edition would come back in stock eventually. It is a little later than we expected, but it is at last back in stock on Brandon's store! The last ones sold out rapidly, so you'll want to get on this one quickly, I imagine. It is a second edition, but this leatherbound is so incredible, it is absolutely gorgeous. I could not recommend it more as the definitive version of Elantris. If my apartment ever burns down and I take one belonging out of my house, it'd probably be my copy of this. Seriously.
  12. Fellow sharders, happy new year 2015! This is a crossover piece (Sorry, it's only a rough sketch), covering four series (and their magic systems): 2 - Kaladin (Roshar, Stormlight Archive) / 0 - Vin (Scadrial, Mistborn) / 1 - Raoden (Sel, Elantris) / 5 - Vasher (Nalthis, Warbreaker) # # # Another two pieces for fun: One night of the Kholin family Everyone is in pajamas! Front: Shallan, Adolin, Kaladin, Renarin / Behind: Jasnah, Elhokar / Dalinar and Navani are in their room now… Boots incident! # # # Nohadon, writer of The Way of Kings Old stuff: Brightlady Jewelry Includes: (Mostly Navani’s) hairpins, hairspikes, other hair ornaments, earrings, ruby rings Additional: Painrial
  13. I Just finished Elantris and at the end the book there is a bit about the magic system and the narrator seems to know about investiture. The way he talks about other worlds with shards especially a bit about Scadrial makes me think maybe hes from there? I haven't read the other cosmere books (only Mistborn and Elantris) and was wondering if this is someone we know or just another secret from Brandon.
  14. I was rereading Elantris and something struck me, so I felt I had to create an account here. Sarene makes very good arguments for why Iadon may have killed Raoden. For one thing, the timing is too perfect - he has his alliance with Teod but doesn't have to worry about heirs. We skim these arguments, because we already know what happened to Raoden. But what if Sarene was right? Maybe Iadon has some kind of influence with whatever force causes the Shaod, like Regalia with Calamity. Roial's argument that Iadon retains enough compassion not to outright murder his own son is weakened, since Raoden isn't actually dead. Being in Elantris is bad (and some believe worse than death), but if Iadon communicates with what's left of Aona, he may know more than everyone else. Roial also mentions that Iadon has been acting differently recently. This might explain it. Sorry if this is a duplicate. I couldn't find this suggestion anywhere.
  15. It seems that all people must undergo some form of stress to gain their powers. Mistborn need to "snap" and experience some form of traumatizing physical or emotional stress to gain allomancy. The Elantrians need to be taken by the Shaod. The Returned somehow gain one incredibly powerful breathe when they return, although anyone can get enough breathe to become powerful. The parshendi must transform in the middle of a highstorm, and surgebinders must form the nahel bond with a spren. Kaladin, at least, was physically, emotionally, and mentally stressed before he figured out the oaths. Thoughts?
  16. The aons were based on hangul, the korean writing system. If you don't know about it go check the wikipedia page here:www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangul I think Aons are an alphabet like hangul, with each symbol representing a collection of letters. Each Aon is di-syllabic and has two short vowels(A,E,I,O but no U) so it shouldn't be to hard to figure out. I'm going to do this with out the chasm line, though that brings up a question for another day: Why is the chasm line part of AonAon and not just some "earth" or "physical" Aon Aon is two lines and a dot this represents A, O and N probably in the order drawn, which is A-top line first, O-Curved side line drawn second N-center dot drawn last Thus far I haven't made much progress in finding a pattern, but I believe lines of symmetry are also important. Hopfully you guys can figure this out better than I have so far.
  17. Okay not "evil" evil, but I sometimes get that he is potencialy an antogonist but "evil" is so much eisier to type on a touch screen. For a while now I have suspected that Hoid is evil, mostly because if I was an author and was trying to hide a villan I would make them witty and charming and friends with protagonists. Of course he really might be that and I'm more paranoid than Vin but it's something to keep in mind. The closest I have come to a semi coherant theory is the list below which is mostly circumstancial. 1: All of the cosmere books besides maybe Emperor's Soul and some of the ebook only ones have an "ars arcanum" in the back, further more the arcanum seems to be written by someone in world and that they are an outsider as far as I can tell, it is also known that Hoid is a world hopper and would see things by an outsiders view. 2: The entry on hemalurgy describes it as being one of the most potentially usefull arts in the cosmere, WOB has stated that hemalurgy can steal more than just mistborn magic. 3: At the end of the Elantris 10th anniversary (I am taking this on word of mouth since I mavent read it myself... yet.) It has Spiolers++++++++++++++++++ until I figure out how to do it the official way. Hoid talking to a Skaze about a deal he had with it and how that deal fell through since he didn't get what he wanted. To become an elantrian. Also Hoid is wearing bandages. Why would he be wearing bandages? See point 2. End of spiolers+++++++++++++ MINOR POINT 4: Hoids old buddies seem to be at odds with him (the letter) and the seventeenth shard is looking for him, a group which includes demoux and galladon. What are thier reasons? Thays all of the theory that I currently have. I might have more to add at a later time period after some rereading. Also I don't think hoid is really evil, I just wonder if he will be an antagonist at some point.
  18. Two weeks, in a row. For reals. We're here. We're discussing lore in Elantris, chapters 4-6. Can we make it interesting when it's all setup? Do you like talking about Jindoeese food? How many cannibal jokes can we make? Will they be better or worse than the meat jokes? Will you imagine a shirtless Hrathen fighting a giant lizard? You be the judge. The answer: we make fun of Mi'ch being really bad at pronouncing Fjordell names. Also, we're pleased to say that Dragonmount.com is back online now. At the time of the recording it wasn't. Good job guys for getting through that attack! You make our server look like a broken dam. Spoilers: Again, there's Elantris spoilers (duh), slight discussion of Emperor's Soul, and some talk of Odium. (Don't Saze me, bro) Fun Facts (that we missed): Per Ashe's line about serving Sarene's family for a couple of centuries, Skai and Aona have been dead for at least two centuries at the beginning of the book According to the annotations, Brandon knows that the dramatic eye lock from chapter two is cliche, but still loves it. The sun rises in the east.
  19. This is my theory for the reason about the only people of specific location (ex. Arelon and Duladel) are take from the Shaod. Before of this I had to remember some of the Realmatic aspect of the Cosmere. - The Cognitive aspect of someone (or something) is build about how is views and how he views himself. - The Spiritual aspect is a set of connection (less or more strong) with other Spiritual Aspect (place, time, idea, people, religion,ecc...) - On Sel there is just one "magic system" and the many forms that take are just different use of the same magic system. Now at the true Theory (that is specific of AonDor but can probably works with all the Selish way to use the Dor): I suppose the reason of only the right cultures have a chance to be take by the Shaod, is because their people have an Aon in their name. This simply fact put a minimal connection through the Spiritual Realm to the AonDor (something like bein a Scadiran give a little connection to Preservation). Growing with that name a people "imprint" that Aon as part of self in his Cognitive Aspect that improve his conncection to the AonDor. This theory works pretty well with all the Selish magic system (just remove "Aon" and put "Alphabeth of X") but has some problem with the AonDor without any other fact.... The AonDor is strange, is bein manipulate to offer much power of any other Selish Magic, using Elantris as a "super boost". I suppose that before Elantris was made any people with Aon-name and the right connection with the AonDor may use this magic (As seems to happen with the other selish magic). But for some reason they decided to concentrate the AonDor in a more mighty form. And any people with the "enough strong" connection was take by the Shaod and become Elantrian. Any though about this theory ? Pro or Contros ?
  20. In the Mistborn threads someone posed the question of why the Atium cache never became sentient despite being a large piece of Investiture without a governing mind, I was about to say it was for the same reason that Elantris isn't sentient but then I realized that we don't actually know that. Certainly the city probably has a cognitive aspect much like the almighty Stick does, but it is also a huge repository of Investiture, probably on par at least with Nightblood, couldn't it have similarly gained sentience? As an Aon it has something quite akin to a command as well, we're not entirely sure what exactly Aon Rao does, but the best translation we have is 'spirit' something that could potentially be conceived as being a sentient force of some kind. Just some random musings I had, anyone have any thoughts?
  21. Hello all! Happy holidays! I printed some Cosmere-themed postcards, using some of my fan art pieces, and I think it'll be nice to send some of them to Sharders. So I decided to give away 5-10 pieces here =) If you are interested and are willing to share your address, please send me the number of the card you want most and what you’d love to see on the back (For example, I can do additional art sketch for you.), via message inside the forum. Then I’ll contact you for further details. So be quick! (If there's anyone.) First come, first serve! (Once I receive enough requests, I’ll close the giveaway.) Note that card #8 is out of supply now.
  22. I haven't seen any particular place to chuck the Personalised Pages of books, but I have seen individuals requesting photos of the actual writing. The actual question was chosen due to it linking in with my username, so it makes for a good first post after almost a year of lurking here. So, to skip a few steps, here it is. "If an Elantrian drew Aon Kii, what effect would it have?" "In the presence of Aon Kii, the guilty feel pain."
  23. Before we get into the main bits of news, Tor.com posted the first preview from The Bands of Mourning on Monday! It picks up several months after the events of Shadows of Self on a very important day. Obviously if you have not yet finished Shadows, do NOT read this as it does reference a very important climactic reveal. This is a really fun chapter, so if have finished Shadows I'd really recommend reading it. Check it out here! In other news the Elantris leatherbound edition, which includes the 10th anniversary revised text, is finally on sale! And the first printing is already sold out... Don't worry about missing out however as a second shipment is expected to arrive in January (not to mention Brandon has mentioned that he wants to keep the book in-stock for at least a year)! This book is seriously gorgeous. I love the use of the Aons on the cover, especially the use of Aon Ela as the center-point of the design (which is entirely fitting given its meaning...). The repeating Aon Ido also makes for a nice border. The inside is equally breathtaking. Include are full-color pages with some of the best cover-art from around the world. It even comes with a ribbon bookmark! If you order the book before the end of the year you do have the option of getting a numbered edition (aside from 1-50 going to various stores that have supported Brandon over the years the numbers will be randomized. So ordering sooner does not necessarily mean you will get a lower number. Also if this edition does well enough Brandon is looking at doing similar editions for Mistborn Era 1 and Warbreaker. Potentially it could go farther and we may one day be able to have the entire Cosmere sequence in matching leatherbound, but only if the demand is there (so seriously everybody, those who can afford it of course $100 isn't cheap, let's show them the demand, shall we?). The leatherbound Elantris is not the only new item in Brandon's store however. The 2015 Con Exclusive, a flip-back hardcover of Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell and Perfect State, is up. There are Bridge 4 pendents in bronze and silver as well as a poster featuring the map of Roshar from the Words of Radiance end-pages. There are even Mistborn and Stormlight lanyards. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview and here to discuss the leatherbound edition! Photo credits: Photos of the leatherbound spine and map from Brandon's Twitter. 24. The State of the Sanderson is coming... For those who haven't seen Brandon's latest blog post, he has stated that he intends to do a State of the Sanderson post for his birthday. So far as we know, he is roughly 1/3 of the way through Stormlight 3. He has said after that that it will be either Mistborn 7 (a.k.a. The Lost Metal) or the second Rithmatist (a.k.a. the Aztlanian). We might be able to get a pin-down on that. Although, he has warned that Stormlight 3 might turn into a 2017 release. Anyway, on to shameless advertising. After his last State of the Sanderson, he made a great list of things about what he'd like to get done. I made a flow chart of the whole lot - in addition to a loose timeline - here. I will update this after the next State of the Sanderson. (I'll probably also post here, to be double sure.) So, thoughts? Anything you'd particularly like Brandon to turn around and start writing after Stormlight 3?
