I'm unsure of where we officially learned this, but I learned in Tress that the material dragonsteel comes from the scales of dragons. I didn't think much of it at the time, but then I started thinking about how there are essentially zero mythical metals besides the god metals. So considering that this elusive material is meant to be at the core of the plot to the Dragonsteel book, it is either regular metal that's been specifically invested, or it's god metal. Considering that God metal can manifest in a multitude of ways, I wouldn't consider it impossible if dragonsteel was secretly Adonalsium's metal. We've already seen spren manifest as metal and we know that nonhuman creatures in the physical can interact with the cognitive realm to a degree. Although interacting with splinters and the cognitive is typically exclusively Rosharan, I wouldn't be surprised if some really weird stuff was going on with the dragons considering we don't know a whole lot about, or at least I don't. That concludes my brief theory. If you see any holes in my logic or whatever feel free to say... I never know how to end these...

I have assembled here a WOBs, and I will also assemble them piece by piece, with the longest stretches ever, into a Hoid theory. :So, the first one:. This, I believe, tells us that Hoid is looking very much to see someone again. I will get back to this one. I have a quote from tWoK, chapter 57. I see this as him basically saying that he was originally created as a thought. "Words on a page". Forgery, anyone? Well, where could MAGIC such as forgery come from before the Shattering of Adonalsium? That's right, Adonalsium. Hoid was created by Adonalsium. I don't remember when, but sometime in tWoK or WoR Hoid tells Kaladin that he stole his name from someone he should have loved, his old master. I don't want to stretch this argument too long, but maybe his master was Adonalsium? Just consider it for me, would ya? Another WOB: He can't hurt someone. OK. But he becomes nauseous just by thinking of physical pain. Might it be so that he regrets hurting someone? Someone he should have loved? I promise, the next part will be the last. THE FINAL WOB: So we know that Hoid is collecting lots of magic systems. Magic systems are Investiture right? And where does Investiture originally come from? The shards. The shards are all parts of Adonalsium. So, if he collects all the magics, and maybe even learns to combine them he may be able to get a piece of Adonalsium. THE FINAL STRETCH: I believe that Hoid wants to see someone he's lost. He also was created by Adonalsium, so Adonalsium is kind of his "parent". If he made a mistake and killed his Parent, then he obviously regrets it. He does not want to hurt someone, as he's already made that mistake once before. He also wants to remake Adonalsium. Well, that's it- He wants to remake Adonalsium. That's why he for example, in the Epiloge of RoW Wit/Hoid is having a fight with Odium/Rayse. Odium is destroying/Killing Shards, something which makes it harder for Hoid to collect everything. Thank you for staying with me! Here's a cookie! Please feel free to tell me your thoughts.

So I bought tickets to Dragonsteel Con this week, but I'm not really sure what I'm going to. I've never actually been to a con before, despite my previous nerdiness, and I have some questions for you smart people who went last year. Is it safe to go with my 10 and 14 year old sisters? Is a Wax and Wayne costume required, or can I choose to wear something unrelated? Am I required to wear a costume, or can I go in regular clothes? Will Brandon be wandering around in the crowd with us, or will he have a schedule we can look at so we know where he's going to be? Thanks a bunch. What dawnshards did Jerrick or whatever his name was, and the illusion women, hold in dragonsteel? im aware BS has said the cannon has changed but I can’t help but think there is a hint in the answer.

Dragonsteel is a substance that the Yolish Dragons seem to be able to produce naturally from their own bodies. Dragonsteel also sounds awfully like a godmetal. In the Dragonsteel chapters, the Sho Del apparently use it somehow in order to be able to reproduce and the short story, The Traveler seemed to imply that the substance could be used to view events happening on other Shardworlds (as Frost's eyes were rimmed with a silvery metallic sheen) Dragons are also apparently naturally immortal and shape-shifters, which depending on their method of doing so sound like they could be Investiture intensive. The former is usually a result of holding a high concentration of Investiture. The latter is true shape-shifting, not illusory. Dragons are not like the Mistwraiths & Kandra with messed up Spiritual Identity and Cognitive blockage and fooling your sDNA regarding your species is no simple Forgery, this sounds like it should require a lot of Investiture.

Hi all! Long time podcast listener and forum lurker, new to posting. Just reading the first WoR Ryan interlude and it mentions that the Larkin has: Which reminds me of the descriptions of Dragonsteel we've seen. When describing Frost especially there were a few mentions of silver. It's not a lot to go on but combined with the fact that they look somewhat like you might expect a dragon to look it's certainly got me wondering. Apologies if it's already been theorised / disproven, I hunted around for it but couldn't see a post. Either way I'm glad to be here!

I was browsing through forum discussions on here and I found this quote in a topic about the Nightwatcher: What stood out to me more about this quote though was the bit about Adonalsium at the end. Maybe I've just missed this or something, but I personally believed Adonalsium to be the original Power of Creation that was held by a person similar to how people hold the Shards. I believe Brandon referred to Adonalsium as a "he" at one point, which may not necessarily have been a reveal of any sort. However, there was also this quote from Khriss in Secret History: So it's seems Khriss also believed Adonalsium to be a being holding the power. However, the bit at the end of the WOB seems to be Brandon slipping out that Adonalsium was the original, whole Power of Creation that had become sentient, similar to a Splinter, which is a known property of Investiture when not held by a being for a time. This idea seems very cool to me, as when Brandon writes the Dragonsteel books and we learn more about Adonalsium, it would be very interesting to see what kind of mind a pure force/energy like that would have, especially when not influenced by the intents of the sixteen Shards. I would expect it to really be a God figure in temperament, because Brandon has said that the intents of the Shards were loosely inspired by attributes of deity. The fact that Adonalsium would be a sentient being of pure energy from the Cosmere rather than a human or other mortal being given that power could also lend Adonalsium credibility as a true God figure in the eyes of some. And from what we've seen of The Liar of Partinel potentially implying that Adonalsium was destroying Yolen through the fain life, it would be interesting to see what potentially went wrong in its mind, since it could be some effect of the Investiture. This could also be the reason the sixteen Shattered Adonalsium, because its Investure mind went wrong somehow and they believed that humans/other species needed to hold the power to prevent this. I think it could ultimately go either way (Adonalsium being a being or sentient Investiture) but if Adonalsium really was pure sentient Investiture, I'd be very excited to read more about that. Let me know if this was already commonly accepted information though.

Has there been any announcement or comment I missed about a 10th anniversary edition of Well of Ascension? I know Brandon had mentioned wanting to do it in 2017 if the prior books were well received, which they certainly seem to have been. I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to filling my bookshelves with a complete Dragonsteel Cosmere collection.

Disclaimer: I’ve not read Dragonsteel and have no private information about it. This post is speculation only. It is another in my periodic series, “A Theory of Cosmere Magic.” Thinking through the Shattering’s mechanics reminded me of the Well of Ascension. That in turn reminded me of a post some time ago that compared Mistborn 1 characters with some then-known Shards. (I can’t find that post to link to and credit its author. If that was you, please step forward.) I’m now convinced Brandon intended Mistborn 1 to foreshadow Dragonsteel and the Shattering. Comparisons between the Shards and the Mistborn 1 characters show this intention. There isn’t a one-to-one correspondence between each Shard and Mistborn character. Honor is not Elend. But the Mistborn character personalities, abilities and interests match well with Shard Mandates and Vessel personalities. (A later post will address Shard Mandates. I suggest you hold your comments on my one-word Mandate descriptions until I publish that post.) Some names incorporate or reference their counterpart. Elend resembles “Nahel” (with the Vorin “h” wild card), Rashek resembles Rayse, and Yeden resembles Endowment. OreSeur has some assonance with Autonomy. Sazed may not resemble Skai, but he does resemble “skaze.” “Vin Cultivation” probably still makes Brandon chuckle – “Vin” is French for “wine.” Honor – Elend Honor binds (his Mandate). Elend wants to bind nobles and skaa into a single, fairly administered political entity – “unite them.” He prefers political solutions to conquest, though conquest becomes inevitable. (In this, he resembles Dalinar, bound to Honor.) Also like Dalinar, even Elend’s enemies view him as an “honorable,” idealistic man. He wears snappy uniforms, like Dalinar reports Honor wearing in WoK. Honor loves Cultivation. Cultivation – Vin Cultivation adapts (her Mandate). Khriss says, “the bonding of spren to humans is merely an expansion of what already exists in the nature of the planet.” (AU, Kindle, p. 535.) Cultivation adapts Adonalsium spren to make them bondable to humans. (Honor does the actual bonding.) Vin is a living symbol of adaptation – she is Mare’s flower, blossoming from street urchin to Ascendant Warrior. Hoid doesn’t get along with either Vin or Cultivation. Vin killed Rashek – will Cultivation defeat Odium? Cultivation loves Honor. Odium – Rashek Odium severs Connections (his Mandate). Hate corrodes and divides. Alendi’s journal repeatedly describes Rashek as hateful. His Final Empire works by dividing nobles from skaa. Rashek tries to destroy Terris Keepers like Tindwyl and Sazed. Odium killed Devotion and Dominion. (I recently proposed Aona and Skai may have been Rayse’s parents. Mistborn foreshadowing suggests the three might at least be ethnically related.) Devotion – Tindwyl Devotion loves (her Mandate). Tindwyl unconditionally loves Sazed, despite the impossibility of intimacy. She prefers death beside him than to leave Luthandel for safety. She “devotes” herself to Sazed and his research. She also devotes herself to her people – the Synod planted Tindwyl as a Breeder at age 14 to pass her Feruchemical genes to twenty children. That devotion made Tindwyl the magical “mother” of a large segment of Scadrial’s Era 2 Feruchemical population. Dominion – Sazed Dominion controls (his Mandate). Sazed seems an unusual choice, until you think about his self-control. He defies the Synod and frees the Terris people – he gives them self-dominion (another word for “autonomy.”) Tindwyl loves him because Sazed works to “change the world” – to control rather than to accept his circumstances. He is fastidious, formal and measured. Sazed lives with exquisite balance, an act of great self-control. Sazed is the perfect Vessel to simultaneously control Ruin and Preservation. Sazed loves Tindwyl. Autonomy – OreSeur (TenSoon) Autonomy constructs his/her own many-faced pantheon of deities. I agree with posters who believe Bavadin was a shape-shifting dragon. Who better than kandra to foreshadow such a creature? Kandra served Rashek – Hoid believes Bavadin helped Odium. TenSoon “finished” (literally) what OreSeur had begun. TenSoon showed his “autonomy” by resisting his masters and fellow kandra. Endowment – Yeden Endowment gives life (her Mandate). She measures her gifts in relatively equal units of Breath. Breaths are the currency by which Endowment calculates her “Returned” on “Investment.” If a Returned can’t inspire the faithful to “Invest” him/her with a weekly Breath, Endowment terminates that “Investment” – the Returned dies. Yeden “endows” Kelsier’s crew. He is the source of funds the crew relies on to finance their rebellion. Yeden “gives life” to the Skaa dream of freedom, the return on his investment. “Survivor” Shard – Kelsier Enough said. Brandon says the Survivor Shard’s Mandate is not “surviving.” Based on Kelsier’s attributes – vision, charisma, team-building and delegation – “leadership” may be this Shard’s Mandate. How that translates into a magic system is unclear. Ambition – Straff Venture Ambition…is ambitious? We don’t know how Ambition’s un-splintered magic works, but we do know Straff is the most “ambitious” character in Mistborn 1. Ambitious people seek “ventures,” risky or dangerous activities with high return. Straff pursues power at all costs without scruples. He is willing to sacrifice both sons to gain power. Straff’s ambition made him ruthless, rapacious. Odium feared Ambition for a reason. Preservation – Leras (as himself) Ruin – Ati (as himself) Hoid – Marsh? Both Hoid and Marsh have acquired many magics they weren’t born with. Both have highly distorted, barely human souls. I’m guessing on this one. Hoid’s regret about participating in the Shattering also sounds like Kwaan, Rashek’s uncle who discovered Alendi. Either way leaves five Shards for the five remaining Mistborn crew members. My broad-brush speculations about their corresponding Shard’s magic: Ham – skeptical magic. Spook – passionate magic. Breeze – manipulative magic. Clubs – artistic magic. Dockson – organizational magic. Dockson’s the only non-magical original crew member. Brandon hints Leras may have been a pre-Shattering magic user. Hoid was a pre-Shattering Lightweaver. If the Mistborn pattern persists, all Vessels in the Dragonsteel “crew” except one will use pre-Shattering magic.

Hello to the 17th Shard! This is my first time visiting the forums, but I've been a follower of coppermind.net and the Cosmere for over a year now. Has anyone here read Dragonsteel yet? What are your (no spoilers) thoughts/opinions of it?

Dragonsteel is a rare and super valuable metal, which starts as a liquid form of ink, distilling in small pockets within the Pits of BYU. When used in feruchemy, it stores canonicity. While filling a dragonsteelmind, you and the rest of the world around you become less real, and subject to large amounts of change without affecting anything outside the bubble. By properly tapping a large number of charges, it's possible for you to become canon in a different work entirely. However, you need more charges to create a lasting impact; a small number of charges gets you only a cameo appearance, which is hardly canon at all. Hoid initially was unable to tap more than the smallest amount of canonicity, as he was a feruchemist and had limited reserves to draw upon. However, having stolen the lerasium beads from the Well of Ascension, he has gained the powers of a mistborn as well. Hoid is now, therefore, a dragonsteel compounder. And free to become canon and create changes in any story he wishes. At least, that's my theory. I think it explains all available evidence about Hoid. For instance, his origin story and all possible sources of dragonsteel are, like Dragonsteel, now noncanon. Hoid is becoming canon in more and more novels, as well - and he always shows up in vaguely the right place because you can't become canon unless there's a novel to be canon in. All known reserves of Dragonsteel have, on multiple documented occasions, vanished mysteriously, and we know that Hoid loves to steal important things. As I have not read Dragonsteel myself, I neither have - nor wish to have - any evidence against this theory. It is therefore impossible to disprove, and thus perfect in every way. Well, unless dragonsteel is, in fact, Dragon's Teel, the sesame oil of dragons. Which sounds like some sort of delicious hot pepper coating for bagels. I want some
