  1. I've always wondered if maybe the Dalinar's asked the Nightwatcher to help him forget his wife making that his boon and not his curse... the Oathbringer conversations almost support that theory. What does everyone else think his boon and curse are?
  2. I just wanted to make sure everybody will notice this piece of art based on WoK. It's not mine, but it's so awesome!
  3. So i've been thinking about Dalinar's message, "Unite Them".... This could be about the Alethi, but it could also be much more... For example Unite them Shards? Unite the people of the Cosmere... Unite the Heralds... Unite the KR... Thoughts?
  4. Hey there fellow fans, I posted up a series of portraits and moment paintings to the 17th Shard Gallery featuring the Kholin family a few months back, but failed to ever mention it in the forums. :/ Thought I'd bring it up now for your viewing pleasure. And if you like 'em enough, I'm selling prints on my online store at gmhansen.storenvy.com. Here's the Gallery post. Cheers!
  5. So I was reading the Tor analysis (X) for the way of kings as I've finally managed to make two of my friends buy and read the books with me in a reread (for them it would be the first time). In the commentary the author writes that Kaladin is more honourable than Dalinar, while I've always felt that it was the other way around. Dalinar constantly tries to do the right thing and not jump to conclusions- While Kaladin is very often (in my opinion) driven by his emotions (even though he got over that in WOR after he decided to not kill Elhokar). Im just wondering how Kaladin can be more honourable than Dalinar (other than the fact that he has an honourspren and is supposed to be honourable - i just feel like Kaladins non honourable actions weigh more than Dalinars)
  6. I grow bored at times, and occasionally random lulzy-conversations spark some interest into that boredom.
  7. The recent Oathbringer prologue and it's subsequent discussion got me thinking on a theory I had way back when WoR was released, and I think I have some pretty convincing evidence in its favor now. I think that the Bondsmiths are able to directly and purposefully affect the spiritual realm and the spiritual aspect of individuals. A relevant quote on the Bondsmiths is as follows: "So Melishi retired to his tent, and resolved to destroy the Voidbringers upon the next day, but that night did present a different stratagem, related to the unique abilities of the Bondsmiths; and being hurried, he could make no specific account of his process; it was related to the very nature of the Herald and their divine duties, an attribute the Bondsmiths alone could address." - WoR Chapter 58 Epigraph This Epigraph heavily implies that this Bondsmith created Parshmen out of Listeners, that the method used is specific to Bondsmiths, and that it relates to "the very nature of the Herald and their divine duties" which I strongly suspect is referencing the Spiritual Realm. I think that this power would function similarly to the effects of hemallurgic chimeras, but dependent on the Bondsmith's will rather than knowledge of spiritual bind-points and a physical spiking. If my theory is correct then it makes the below Hoid conversation much more intelligible and slightly prophetic, especially since Brandon has said that everything Hoid says in this conversation is significant: "[Wit] looked directly at [Dalinar]. "Adonalsium." Dalinar frowned more deeply. "What?" “Nothing,” Wit said. He seemed preoccupied, unlike his usual self. “Nonsense. Balderdash. Figgldygrak. Isn’t it odd that gibberish words are often the sounds of other words, cut up and dismembered, then stitched into something like them—yet wholly unlike them at the same time?” Dalinar frowned. “I wonder if you could do that to a man. Pull him apart, emotion by emotion, bit by bit, bloody chunk by bloody chunk. Then combine them back together into something else, like a Dysian Aimian. If you do put a man together like that, Dalinar, be sure to name him Gibberish, after me. Or perhaps Gibletish.” I also think that it explains what Dalinar is seeing in WoR in the below passage: "Dalinar stood in darkness. He turned about, trying to remember how he’d come to this place. In the shadows, he saw furniture. Tables, a rug, drapes from Azir with wild colors. His mother had always been proud of those drapes. My home, he thought. As it was when I was a child. Back before conquest, back before Gavilar . . . Gavilar . . . hadn’t Gavilar died? No, Dalinar could hear his brother laughing in the next room. He was a child. They both were. Dalinar crossed the shadowed room, feeling the fuzzy joy of familiarity. Of things being as they should be. He’d left his wooden swords out. He had a collection, each carved like a Shardblade. He was too old for those now, of course, but he still liked having them. As a collection. He stepped to the balcony doors and pushed them open. Warm light bathed him. A deep, enveloping, piercing warmth. A warmth that soaked down deep through his skin, into his very self. He stared at that light, and was not blinded. The source was distant, but he knew it. Knew it well." Let me know what you guys think and what the implications could be if this theory turns out to be correct.
  8. I was reading The Way of Kings and I am a little bit confused about one thing. In Chapter 52, Renarin mentions the Old Magic to Dalinar after one of Dalinar's visions, and then, "The empty place in his memories where [Dalinar's] wife had once existed had never seemed as obvious to him as it did at that moment." When I read that, I guessed that Dalinar had forgotten his wife as a result of a curse from the Old Magic. Later on (I can't find the source material), Dalinar becomes a little more explicit with relating the loss of memories of his wife to the Old Magic, saying that he did consult the Old Magic, but will not reveal his curse. I am wondering two things. First, am I correct in my guess about whether this is his curse or not? (I have just finished The Way of Kings, so this is the only spoiler I am okay with for material from later books.) Second, if I am correct, did Sanderson intend this to be heavy-handed foreshadowing, or is he trusting in the intelligence of his readers to understand this about Dalinar without being explicitly told? Also, I am relatively new to using forums, so I would appreciate any advice related to structuring my posts.

Here we got the skirtlike takama, a kind of Alethi traditional warrior’s garb =)
  10. OK, so you know how in Mistborn if you swallow metal you can use powers, etc. etc. We all know that stuff. Same for the Stormlight Archive. If there's a nearby source of stormlight, you can abbsorb it and use powers. But here's the thing; at the end of HoA, Vin absorbs the Mists and Ascends. The same could be true for the Stormlight Archive; if you absorb enough Stormlight, you could Ascend. You could dismiss this by saying 'even if you swallow a lot of metal, you don't ascend'. This is true; but remember this. The metals commonly used in allomancy are channels for power; the power isn't in the metal itself; rather, you use it to channel power from preservation. If you take a metal with the power actually inside of it, say, lerasium. If you have enough of it (enough to become a savant), you ascend. This could be true for the SA as well. Since Stormlight holds the actual power and is not a channel for it, if you had enough, you would ascend to become Honour. Again, you might say 'but Vin could absorb the Mists because Leras let her, and he chose her to be the next Preservation'. If you think about it, this could be true for SA as well, more specifically, Dalinar. Think about it. The Almighty (Honour) gave him seizures (not much of a gift, but still) so that he could see recordings of him. He chose Dalinar, the same way Leras chose Vin. Admittedly, Honour has been Splintered, but could it come back together for a new Shard? Quite possibly. Please tell me what you think of this down below. (by which i mean tell me whether I'm a deranged lunatic or a child prodigy)
  11. So far the best use of "living" shardplate is in the chapter Starfall where we see a windrunner dismiss their helm seamlessly, and it has a glow to it unlike any "dead" shardplate. The major theory on this is that the shardplate is each intellectual Spren's cousin spren gathered and used as armor wind spren for Honorspren, etc. However I think that the Radiant's themselves are the source of the shardplate. It could be another layer of skin as it were, an attempt by their bodies to make themselves less porous and give the leaking Stormlight a place to be held in. The reason I think it's a new magical skin is because it regrows when fed Stormlight. Wouldn't the dead wind spren inhabiting said plate be unable to regrow once the bond is broken? It is Another effect of the symbiotic bond between the spren and their Knights. Thus giving the knights another means of protection while ensuring that their knights always have a source of Stormlight. It's something I haven't found a specific thread on yet.
  12. So... I was wondering why Dalinar hears att scream when summoning the blade he took from Taln in order to pin Amaram down as a liar. When the Stormfather accepts his oath on top of Urithiru he (like Kaladin and Renaren) hears the scream of the dead spren of which it is "made" from (lacking a better word). But if it realy was a honorblade Dalinar was holding it should not have that effect on him. Kaladin, after picking up Szeth's honorblade, notes that he does not hear anything and remaks on it. Is the blade Taln carried att fake, did someone swap it- if so when, and who?
  13. Spoilers for those who haven't finished either Stormlight Archive books. As we all know Odium has shattered Honor's shard and killed its holder. However, as the series goes on it might be impossible for the main characters to fight against a shard holder, without another shard holder. I think that they might have to gather the shattered remnants of Honor's shard and remake it. I don't know if this is possible, but I think it would be interesting to have one of the main characters take up the shard to fight Odium. As for who would wield it, I think it either has to be Kaladin or Dalinar. Dalinar already has the Stormfather as his spren and is set to be a very powerful player in the days to come, but on the other hand there is Kaladin. He already holds an honor spren and these first five books are more or less built around him and I believe that he will be the champion that Honor hinted at in the visions he sent Dalinar. I prefer the idea of Kaladin becoming the new holder of Honor's shard since I feel that it would show the most growth of a character who went from a slave all the way to a God.
  14. An early happy new year! In celebration of the year of Stormlight 3, I drew something from the flashbacks XD
  15. I took a venture into stylized characters a little while back (I've come back to more representational stuff recently so as to better learn the rules, and then go BACK to stylizing with a bit more confidence) and decided to do the 25 essential expressions meme with my version of Dalinar Kaolin. It was a lot of fun =) let me know what you think! grantmhansen.com
  16. Here's another stylized character I did a long while back. Like... almost a year ago... Wow. Iiiiiiiit's Dalinaaaar! Kinda my favorite character in the Stormlight Archives. This guy rocks. I'm going to be revisiting his portrait very soon. And moving his ears down among other fixes =) Let me know what you think! grantmhansen.com
  17. Just occurred to me that Dalinar could, in response to Sadeas' murder, take the fall of Adolin legally if (or when) the consequences eventually come to fruition. Thoughts on this?

    Dalinar

From the album: Stormlight Trading Cards

Okay, granted, you've seen some of these images before. But I'm still very pleased with this Dalinar.
  19. I just finished a reread of The Way of Kings. Something in the last vision Dalinar receives stood out to me. He is obsessed through the whole book about uniting the High Princes, because of a vision he had. He has that same vision again at the end of the book but it is extended. In the extended version we learn that Honor is the one who sent them and that Odium has killed him. He is again told to "Unite Them". But who must he Unite? Note: I removed Dalinar's thoughts and dialogue for clarity. It is right after Honor points out the star systems being destroyed by Odium, while still looking at those star systems, that he tells Dalinar "Someone must unite them". Honor is not just saying Unite the High Princes, or the Knights Radiant, or even all of Roshar. Honor is thinking on a much, MUCH bigger scale. Unite the Cosmere!
  20. I am not confident about what I am about to ask, So if I am being stupid tell me. At the end of Words of Radiance Dalinar became a bondsmith after bonding the stormfather. Then he summoned his Shardblade (Taln's Honorblade) heard screaming after which he unbonded it. As for as I know Shardblades are dead spren and when a Knights Radiant touches them he heards screams but Honorblade are different. Honorblades were given to heralds by Honor and are not spren. When Kaladin took Szeth's blade , He heard no screaming as he heard when he touched a Shardblade. So My Questions then are: Dalinar heard Screams when he touched an Honorblade but Kaladin did not why? Maybe because Dalinar was bonded to one and Kaladin was not OR if not then........................ If a knights radiant can touch an honorblade So does it imply that Dalinar's blade was not an honorblade but rather a shardblade? if so then the madman Taln is not the Herald? Was the man switched or just the blade? Could it be due to different orders of Kaladin and Dalinar? Or does it have something to do with Dalinar? Maybe he is not who we think he is.
  21. After looking back through the end of WoR, I noticed something odd. I know that there's one Interlude that happened in the Purelake, but it doesn't suggest at all that could happen. Any evidence or theories?
  22. This has been in my head for a while, and I keep forgetting to post it, so hopefully it'll not be as rambling as I worry it will be xD Forgive me if this has already been speculated/shot down elsewhere! So, Brandon has been rather close lipped on the origins of Shardplate, if Kaladin is going to get his own, and we've theorised all kinds of things, like the Plate being made of non-sentient Spren locked into Plate forn the same way Spren are locked into non-living Shardblades... My thought/random theory is this. When a Radiant reaches the final Ideal of their Order, or progresses far enough, they create their own Shardplate... but through Stormlight manipulation. "But Rawrbert, you crazy, mad, lovable, handsome fool," I hear you say, "What would make you think that? Shardplate has to be more than just hardened Stormlight!" Well, you flattering reader, let me explain my way of thinking. We've seen Shallan can dim the Stormlight from her skin to blackness, and we've seen that as a Radiant progresses through their Ideals that holding and using Stormlight and Surges becomes easier and more natural to them. And from what I recall from Dalinar's visions, when he was fighting with and saw Radiants in their prime, their Shardplate glowed at the joints with inner light correspondending to their Order. What we DIDN'T see... was their skin glowing. At no point (Unless I'm recalling incorrectly, as I don't have the book in frony of me at the moment.) does Dalinar mention that the Radiants he sees' skin glow with light at all. Now, he doesn't specifically say that they AREN'T glowing, but that seems like the kind of detail everyone's favourite war dad would notice, especially when he instantly remarks on the glowing Plate in his head. This, along with Shardplate being powered by infused spheres, and that it can regrow when fed Stormlight, makes me think that a Surgebinder will be able to convert the Stormlight that would make their skin grow, or escape from their pores, into Shardplate, when they become proficient enough with metabolising/using it. This would also explain why the Radiants in the visions were able to summon and dismiss part of their armour at will, by simply reabsorbing the Stormlight they've hardened around their head to create a helm, or around their fist to make a gauntlet. I suspect the reason Brandon didn't have Dalinar see the dismissal/resummoning of the armour pieces to keep us guessing, since if it formed first from mist or from light we could pretty easily narrow down how it was happening. ^^ Of course it COULD maybe be summoned from the Cognitive Realm, a perfect ideal of armour for each Radiant.... Anyway, thoughts? Praises? Insults? ^-^ Hit meh!
  23. This is just a theory. It's probably too simple to be the whole story. But it makes sense, and I think it could be useful for (among other things) identifying Alethi characters in foreign lands, and creating Alethi OCs for fanfiction. In Writing Excuses, Brandon once mentioned a linguistic paradigm for "classical" Alethi names. He didn't describe it in detail, but he said it was invented to explain 'Dalinar,' which didn't really fit with the Vorin naming convention. He also said that 'Kaladin,' which he came up with by altering 'paladin,' conveniently fit this new classical paradigm. He also said this, in a 2014 interview: But there's a much simpler pattern in these names. And here it is: A simple alternation of Consonants (C) and vowels (V). (C) V C V C V C The initial consonant is in brackets because it's optional. It can be dropped, so names begin with a vowel. But the rest of the sequence doesn't change. No double vowels or double consonants. (Digraphs, like Th and Sh, count as one letter because they represent a single phoneme.) This holds true for the following Alethi names. Dalinar Adolin Renarin Gavilar Elhokar (assuming Lh is a digraph, the Alethi version of a double-L in English) Kaladin Meridas Amaram (coincidentally also a proper Vorin name) Aladar Arafik Avarak Avaran Alabet Lamaril Jakamav Kalishor Isasik Salinor Talanor Thanadal Tinalar Helaran (not Alethi, but close) Notice that all of these are men. This paradigm is only used for male names. As far as I can tell, all Alethi men have either Vorin names, or names in this pattern. (Vorin meaning palindromic, with one letter added, subtracted, or changed.) The only complication is Restares, whose name is neither Vorin nor classical. It violates my classical pattern because of the "ST" in the middle. But since Restares hasn't been confirmed as an Alethi, this may not be a problem. I'm wondering if anyone can see any additional patterns or rules that govern this system. Just for fun, I will now list some names from other Cosmere works that conveniently match this pattern. Galladon. Aredel. Luthadel. Aledin. Aradan (Yomen). Bevidon. Bavadin! Devanex. Dukaler. Galivan. Goradel. Heberen. Ishathon. Caberel. Nikolin. Arelon. Opelon. Duladel. Seraven. Enelan. And now some names from outside the Cosmere, to illustrate the general fantasy-friendly vibe of this paradigm: Saruman. Denethor. Boromir. Faramir. Azeroth. Suramar. Dalaran. Selidor. Eragon. (Po) Dameron. Caladan. Muradin. Mogenar. Telamon. Galadan. Malekith. Malacath. Akatosh. Zenithar. Kynareth. Erikur. (Obviously it also fits many not-so-fantastical names, like Cameron and Oliver. But let's leave reality out of this. Although Pokemon also fits.)
  24. A while ago I saw someone mention the possibility to make some facepalm memes with that official Szeth art drawn by Mr. Inkthinker. Considering this, I almost laughed like an idiot because Szeth's pose is just so perfect! Then I began to draw other SA characters, using exactly this pose. Till now, we have Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar and Jasnah facepalms. The most interesting part must be the sentence below the title. I'll probably do more because people are asking... So, perhaps a set of Cosmere facepalm memes? Should be awesome. (And I can't wait to do a Sazed/Harmony facepalm.) Full size: https://1.bp.blogspo...palm+Meme+s.jpg
