  1. So I'm on another re-read of WoR and something caught my eye in the scene where Dalinar and co first notice the strange writing on the wall (I'm using kindle so I can't give pg numbers). Now I read in another thread somewhere where it was put forward that Renarin was the one responsible for writing the warnings, based on his ability to see ahead as a Truthwatcher and wanting to warn everybody without attracting attention to himself. In this scene Dalinar wakes from his vision and tells it to Navani and everybody leaves him alone in his room, at which time he promptly falls asleep. This scene stuck with me because he mentions how weird it was for him to fall asleep during the day. The second Surge of the Truthwatchers is Progression which is the 'Surge of healing and regrowth.' My theory is that Renarin was somehow able to use this surge to put Dalinar to sleep so that he could etch the warning without anyone noticing him. What do ya'll think? I don't know if this has been discussed yet or not so feel free to tear it up.
  2. Dalinar betrayed to the parshendi by Sadeas.

  3. Ok in the Prelude to TWoK Talenel (Taln, Talenelat, Talenel'Elin) dies and his honorblade vanishes, so that there are only 9 left in the circle. In Words of Radiance, doesn't Dalinar bond Talenel'Elin's honorblade? And if Dalinar DID bond the honorblade, as WoR mentions in multiple places that Dalinar had bonded "that madman's blade". Why, at the end of WoR, does the blade that Dalinar has bonded start screaming inside his head after Dalinar swears his second oath, and The Stormfather refer to the blade as a "monstrosity"?? Especially if Szeth had an honorblade, and it did not scream in Kaladin's mind.
  4. At the end of WOR, when Dalinar bonds with the Stormfather, he is told (WOR ch. 89) he must be a "Radiant with no Shards," and the Stormfather refers to the blade he has a "monstrosity." When he summons the Shardblade that he had bonded with in order to give it up, he hears screams. My problem with this is, wasn't that blade the blade that was found when Taln collapsed at the gate of Kholinar (procured by Bordin, and later left in a cave to ensnare Amaram)? Shouldn't that be an Honorblade? If so, it isn't a dead spren so it shouldn't scream when he touches it (the same way Szeth's blade doesn't scream when Kaladin holds it, see WOR ch. 87). It doesn't seem like it could be a different Shardblade that Taln got somewhere, because [speculation] when he got to Kholinar he had just manifested (he was wet, like Shardblades that are just summoned And then he collapsed and the blade didn't dissapear). So, I decided to reread the part (WOR ch. 76) where Dalinar summons the blade and explains to Amaram that he had bonded with it before having placed "the madman's Shardblade" in the cave. And wouldn't you know it: The description of the blade Dalinar has is "wider than most" and "cleaverlike." That is almost the exact opposite of the description of Taln's blade at the end of (WOK Epilogue), "long, narrow, and straight, shaped like an enormous spike." Dalinar is not a liar. He thinks he bonded with "the madman's Shardblade." But, he is wrong - the blade he bonded to was some other blade. The question is, what happened to Taln's Honorblade. 1) Dalinar didn't tell the full truth to Amaram, and Dalinar does know about the Honorblade, but it is somewhere else.... Dalinar bonded with some other blade and used it to trap Amaram after obtaining the Honorblade. This seems unlikely. 2) The Honorblade was switched at some point between Kholinar and the Shattered Plains. Likely suspects: Hoid (who traveled with Bordin and Taln for the first few days before bailing) or Bordin (the servant in charge of the transporting). It would indeed be problematic for Dalinar if Bordin was disloyal, because Dalinar considers him to be a faithful servant. Thoughts?
  5. For all that's been written about it, I don't think the aftermath of Sadeas's murder will be a big part of book 3. It will be important for some characters but there'll be much more important things going on. But I have some thoughts on this I'd like to share. Two quotes from chapter 50 "uncut gems": I don't think many people are going to morn Sadeas's passing, to put it mildly. I've not seen any indication that he was popular or well liked anymore. In particular, for many people in Dalinar's camp, the reaction is more likely to be the reverse - grim joy that the bastard finally got what was coming to him. Dalinar lost several thousand soldiers at the end of tWoK, all because of Sadeas. The new bridgemen soldiers would hardly be well disposed to Sadeas either. Also, a number of lighteyes died during the bridge collapse assassination attempt. Let's put it another way: most of the people in Dalinar's camp would probably think Adolin deserves a medal. Dalinar exiling Adolin (or similar) would not be popular at all with them. This could potentially open up a dangerous rift within Dalinar's camp. Please note: I'm not arguing whether Adolin's actions were moral or not by our standards or that the law is a popularity contest. I'm trying to consider the likely in-world implications. Also, I'll assume for the sake of argument that Adolin is generally considered guilty and/or confesses to the murder relatively quickly and that Dalinar will come down hard on him. I'll also assume that Kaladin won't play much if any part in this (off to see parents) This wouldn't be the best start for Dalinar's Oath to bind men together. I also think that Dalinar is partly to blame for giving Sadeas way too much leeway. Yes, Dalinar was in a difficult situation but I think he was partly motivated by his old friendship with Sadeas. Ditto Amaran - I suspect that letting him run free will turn out to be a big mistake. Being benevolent is all well and good but there are downsides. It also rather unfair and inconsistent if Dalinar is harsh with his allies and soft with his enemies. So, what can be done? I don't think Dalinar will be willing to simply pardon Adolin and he'd certainly not want to have him executed. It seems the minimum possible punishment would normally be exile. But it would be surprising to see Adolin simply walk off the stage (let alone be executed). I suspect that Adolin will be imprisoned until a final punishment is decided. So again, what can be done? Based on what we know, I think maybe the best option would be to retro-actively get Sedeas declared to have been a traitor to the Throne and have his title of Highprince stripped. I think that would help a lot - I get the impression that killing a Highprince is automatically a much bigger crime. Given the mitigating circumstances maybe Adolin's punishment will boil down to time in jail and losing a rank. Of course, there's a lot we don't know about Alethi law - maybe this would be a non-option but it seems reasonable to me currently. So who is going to put together a compelling case, enough that pretty much everyone would accept it (including the other Highprinces)? My bet would be on Shallan and Renarin with some help from Navani. The main "opposition" would be Ialai. So, why Shallan? For brevity's sake I'll just consider what I think is the most likely reaction: Shallan has killed people herself (Tyn the day before she met Adolin), she was very much aware that Adolin hates Sadeas since she put together a plan to have Sadeas legally killed in a duel (to help/impress Adolin). Morally, she might not see much difference between legally killing someone in a dual and what Adolin did. So, I think Shallan would be surprised but not horrified - she would understand and not condemn. In a way, it could help them get closer since Shallan could feel that she could discuss her dark secrets with Adolin. The more Shallan cares about Adolin the more likely she would be to take action - if she doesn't care much about him and if supporting him would become a liability for protecting her bothers then yes she could just walk away (which would really hurt Adolin I think). So, why Renarin? Certainly events in WoR clearly showed him willing to risk life and limb to help/protect Adolin. Of course, we don't know for sure how Renarin would react in these particular circumstances. I suspect he will feel quite conflicted at the beginning - he respects his father too. I could certainly see him getting behind a plan to retro-actively strip Sadeas of his title, or something along those lines. So, could Shallan and Renarin work together, despite the events towards the end of WoR? I'd say so - there were mitigating circumstances on both sides and greater understanding would definitely help (and apologies). Before things got bad, Shallan and Renarin were getting along fine and Renarin was arguably more useful and faster on the uptake than the trained scholars (!). So, in summary: Adolin spends a lot of time in the slammer with a proverbial axe hanging over him. His fiancée and brother lead the fight for him. Sadeas's widow is the "new" (public) opposition. Dalinar stews in the middle, thinking lots of deep thoughts and worries about his own people and own sons. There's lots and lots of other possibilities but this is my main prediction currently - which I expect will be utterly wrong in practice
  6. So, I was perusing the wiki, when I found this: http://coppermind.net/wiki/The_Highprince_of_War And I know Sanderson has changed the flash back sequence, so that Dalinar's flashbacks are in 3 (most likely). But look at this part. This is very vague. However, now it is time to speculate.Do you think Dalinar will die before we reach book five?
  7. Brandon has begun writing on Stormlight 3 in earnest, and today Brandon revealed that the flashback character for this Stormlight book will likely be Dalinar. This may come as a surprise to some, as the previous working title for this book, Stones Unhallowed, as well as Brandon's initial plan suggested Szeth was to be the flashback character. However, more recently, Brandon said that it could be either of the two, or Eshonai, depending on which information needed to be revealed first. While Brandon hasn't officially decided, he won't know for sure until he finishes writing the sequence, he is definitely "leaning that way". The other flashback characters in the first five Stormlight books will be Eshonai and Szeth. Since the original plan was a Szeth, Eshonai, and Dalinar order, it seems likely that we will have Eshonai for book four, and Szeth for book five. That will be it for the first half of the ten book Stormlight sequence. There's a time jump between books five and six, and Brandon will take a break from Stormlight books to do some other projects, like the Elantris sequels and the modern-day Mistborn trilogy. Update 1 to include info that it is not 100% certain just yet. Update 2: Brandon has further clarified that he is currently writing the book assuming it is Dalinar's book, and that the current working title is Oathbringer.
  8. I sat on this piece for a while in a near-completed state thinking that I just didn't have the time I needed to get in and really finish him up, especially as far as detailing out the uniform and stuff. Then I thought: what the heck? Just let this be an exploration into Dalinar's face, and I'll worry about the uniform and stuff on a future piece. I've done a few portraits straightforward like this, and though they've been great practice, I'm really wanting to do something with a bit of action to it to keep pushing my education forward. So I present: my take on Dalinar. I've spent a lot of time and iterations of drawing Dalinar over the past couple of years, and he's been pretty unique in that I've had a relatively clear idea in my head of what he would look like. I'm happy to say that this drawing matches my inner image of him fairly closely =) Not to say that I wouldn't do a redesign someday if I really felt the need. Enjoy! And thanks brandon for writing such a well-rounded, complex-and-challenged-but-also-trying-to-be-good-despite-nearly-everyone-being-against-him character. Love this guy.

  10. Alright. So I was thinking about music and stuff and listening to some a little bit. And I'm like, "Hey! This song reminds me of Hoid!" And thus created was this article. Feel free to post more music for more characters/ more music for some of the characters already listed here. Hoid's Music: Tarantella https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_HwBYBPeNg Kaladin's Music: Child of LIght Hymn of Light* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6w222S7ia0 Shallan's Music: Child of Light Woods Darker Than Night (For the timid Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfeXBePMLf8 Shallan's Music: Child of LIght Bolmus Populi (For the happy, outgoing version of Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TxMSzHdmh0 and Child of LIght Dark Creatures (For the Shardbearing, Lightweaving Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btKf2zVQP7E Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Child of LIght Jupiter's Lightning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBgV-RVPL8 Navani's Music: Child of Light Patches of Sky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4jB2XHJAW4 Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: Child of Light: Metal Gleamed in the Twilight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVLWMPOT4s Szeth's Music: G/S Burned Tower Remix PokemonRemixStudio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUlJA7YC_dk Hope you enjoy listening to these. They're all amazingly composed/recomposed by talented people. Kudos to them! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are some revisions I have for them and why I picked them: Hoid's Music: Intriguingly mysterious, like Hoid himself. Kaladin's Music: Reminds me of the battle scenes with Kaladin. Sort of like him trying to do what's right and best for others, and being simply amazing, pulling through every ordeal. Shallan's Music (Timid): This music sounds rather timid, like it could be played right after a tragedy, and it sort of reminds me of Shallan's conflicted childhood. Shallan's Music (Happy): This is a very cheerful song, as if there were no wrong in the world, sort of like how Shallan acts. Shallan's Music (Confident): Reminds me of the fact that she just goes through every trial. Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Doesn't this song just say "Shardbearer Champion" and "Blackthorn" to you? It does to me. Navani's Music: This one just seemed to fit Navani's personality. Especially in the Words of Radiance. Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: This sounds incredibly fierce and evil, like Stormform. Szeth's Music: This one sounded conflicted, confused, and insane. Like Szeth. *Or should I say STORMlight?
  11. I wrapped up a Dalinar portrait study recently with the intent of updating this: It's been sitting on my digital easel for a while as I basically procrastinated getting into finishing up the uniform and such, but I eventually decided to just let it be a face study and move on with life. So without further ado, here's my interpretation of Dalinar Kholin, one of my absolute favorite literary characters EVER. I feel good about this one, in that I feel like I'm learning and making progress with each portrait. It's fun/painful to look back and see where I came from, but hopefully I can keep up the growing and someday maybe Brandon will hire me to paint a piece or too (wink wink, Brandon Sanderson. Wink. Wink.) Lastly, I wanted to throw in a little preview of the next piece of fanart that I'm starting into. It's just a rough sketch right now (and I mean seriously ROUGH), but it's starting to take the shape I want, and I figure that if I throw 'er in here, I'll be held a bit more accountable to actually get the thing done in a timely manner. It's a scene that I'm kinda hoping to make into part of a series, and it'll be called Kaladin, Healer - 1. To be followed by future Healer scenes, and then things like: Kaladin, Warrior or Radiant or Betrayed, or whatever. If y'all have good ideas for scenes or themes to mix into the series, I'd love to hear them! Here's the rough: p.s. When I previewed this post, the little rough drawing is SUPER tiny. Anyone know how to up the size of the thing? I couldn't figure it out...
  12. Hello 17th Shard World, This is my first entry in the forum. I've been putting some art up in the gallery and someone recommended that I post them here too so that they'd reach a few more souls. The cell-shaded, cartoony looking ones are all several months to about a year old, so there's lots that I look at and want to change in them.. I'll do a few more reboots soon. Hope you all like 'em! Let me know what you think. You can see them, and some more stuff on my website if you ever have a mind: grantmhansen.com
  13. I made a theme song for the Kholin family: Kholin Alight! Shattered Plains Here it is: https://soundcloud.com/ostrichofevil/kholin-alight This is the main theme. It is not done! I eventually will write themes for Dalinar (maybe with some Kaladin), Adolin, Renarin, and Jasnah (maybe with some Shallan). EDIT - This project is now called Shattered Plains
  14. Hi everyone, this ir my first post and I´m not a native english speaker so please be patient! I was just rereading WoK´s last chapter, In the top room. For those who not remember, is the one in which Dalinar learns the Almighty is dead. This specific quote caught my attention: There´s also another reference, in one of the epigraphs: What is a Dawnshard??? What does it mean to "bind any creature"? And why is it so important? This is killing me, please tell me what you think
  15. So, at the end of WoR, when Dalinar bonds the Stormfather, the Stormfather refers to Dalinar's blade as an "abomination". Is not Dalinar's blade Talen'elat's Honorblade? Why would the Stormfather refer to it as an abomination, when it is not a spren corpse?
  16. Just listened to the end of WoR for the umpteenth time. It is the first time I noticed the stormfather pluralizing shards when saying Dalinar will be a radiant without shards. ...uh... Why was it pluralized? It is unnecessary to add that pesky little "s". It is probably just a literary thing. Here I begin to read too much into things... I get that he won't have a shardblade, but is he now permabanned from shardplate as well? Discuss
  17. Brandon said recently that he's now undecided as to who the flashback character for Stormlight 3 will be. Remember that he previously said it will be Szeth. He even had a title in mind, "Stones Unhallowed", though he did say it wasn't final. "Skybreaker" was also a possible title for Stormlight 3, in reference to Szeth's new role as a follower of Nalan. But now that Szeth being the main POV is no longer a sure thing, I've decided to create a poll, just for fun, to see who you guys think the main character should be.To help you decide, here's what I think will most likely happen to Szeth, Dalinar, and Eshonai in Stormlight 3, and how these things relate to the past (in other words, what their flashback scenes might be): Szeth Szeth+Nightblood will kick major shin. Szeth's beliefs, and how his religious leaders betrayed him in the past, will definitely color his interaction with Nightblood. It will be interesting to see the development of his views on what "evil" is. Nalan will show Szeth what it is to be a Skybreaker in modern Roshar. If Szeth accepts the role of being a Knight under the Herald, this will signal a conflict with Taravangian, his previous master. If Szeth no longer feels any obligation to follow the holder of his Oathstone, he might actually kill Taravangian for his crimes (this was predicted as a possibility in the Diagram). A flashback scene in Szeth's POV, depicting the start of his Oathstone-based servitude, would serve as a nice contrast to his showdown with Mr. T. Szeth will return to Shinovar with the intent of vengeance for being wrongfully made Truthless. If Stormlight 3 is going to be his, then the circumstances leading to his becoming Truthless should be part of the flashback sequences. DalinarDalinar will resume his mission to unite the Knights Radiant to fight the Desolation. He will have to unite people from different countries, many of whom might not be willing to follow an Alethi Highprince. Dalinar was in a similar position before when he and his brother Gavilar were trying to unite Alethkar. It will be nice to see how Dalinar the Bondsmith might handle this problem differently from Dalinar the Blackthorn. Kaladin's Squires, knowing that their leader is a Knight Radiant who is therefore higher than any normal lighteyes, might start doubting Dalinar's authority over them, especially if Dalinar commands them to do something they think Kaladin might not like. Remember that Kaladin's Squires can use Stormlight, so Dalinar's status as Knight might mean little to them, especially now that he has no Shardblade. Again, the current Dalinar would probably handle this differently from Blackthorn. At least, I hope so. EshonaiIf Eshonai is still alive, then she will probably continue her struggle with the voidspren controlling her. There might still be a chance that she will break free from Odium's grasp (I'd hope so, or she'd just be another Marsh). Her flashbacks would focus on her dreams of traveling as a youth, and the her feelings of being trapped by her people's isolation from the world, which led her to set out on the expedition that would expose her people to the Alethi. If Eshonai is dead (or presumed dead for most of the book), then the focus will be on how Rlain and any remaining (non-Voidish) Listeners will escape being transformed by the Everstorm. Rlain's bond to Kaladin might be helpful here. If they decide to fight in the Desolation, then they will go against people of their own race, people now controlled by Odium. The flashbacks would probably depict the various discussions Eshonai and the other Parshendi leaders had with regards to their hated gods and the Alethi threat, perhaps revealing a secret contingency plan that might save the world even when their gods do return. ***Myself, I vote Eshonai. She may not be the most interesting Stormlight character in my opinion, but that's only because we haven't really seen much of her. She was barely in Way of Kings. And in Words of Radiance she was, frankly, kind of pathetic, being mostly a tool for Venli's ambitions. I fear that if Stormlight 3 doesn't make her more interesting, she'd be wasted as a character. That's why I hope she'll get the flashback sequences.
  18. The Stormfather seems pretty irritated and unwilling to help Dalinar with being a Bondsmith. He said that he won't become a sword for him. Was the Stormfather just as annoyed back in the days of the KR? If so, the Bondsmiths never had Shards of their own. Even if the Stormfather was willing to help, how would he be the Shards for all three Bondsmiths?
  19. For the past 24 hours I have been scratching my head about Zahel, in theory, actually being Vasher. While I'm not totally against this fact and would not mind it in the least of ways but I feel like there is something that is pointing to a Dalinar/Vasher tie-in. At first I was trying to tie the two characters together (Dalinar = Vasher), it sounded good in my head but Dalinar's background can easily be argued against, the tie-ins would become to complicated, plus I do not think Sanderson would make things that crazy, it is just not his style and then it hit me, Dalinar's wife. "Navani settled back, sipping her wine, safehand lying across her lap. 'Dalinar, your sons told me that you once sought the Old Magic. Why? What did you ask of the Nightwatcher and what curse did she give you in return?' 'I told them that shame is my own,' Dalinar said. 'And I will not share it." Here's the fun part, Shashara is a Returned. Prior to her Return, there is no record of her past life which makes me wonder, aside from Nightblood being on Roshar what else could possibly bring Vasher to Roshar? Maybe trying to figure out Shashara's past or maybe he does know and he wants to be around someone that knew her during a "simpler" time in her life? Yes, I agree the timelines would be and are different for each world within the cosmere but lets be real, that is the interesting part. Let me know what you guys think.
  20. So, this is an opinion piece of mine, and a discussion of Dalinar and Kaladin. In my opinion, Kaladin is by far the better hero character. Here's why. Major events in Kaladin's life include: seeing his brother killed because of an incompetent and selfish squadleader, watching his men get killed by and being enslaved by a corrupt brightlord, and possibly foresaking his freedom (and life) in order to go on a suicide mission to rescue a highprince who had allied himself with Sadeas. Major events in Dalinar's life include: Getting so freaking plastered that he allowed his brother to be killed by Szeth, putting himself in the best possible position for Sadeas to betray him, and being bailed out of said betrayal by Kaladin. Kaladin's major mistake so far was his plan to allow Moash to murder Elhokar. While this is quite a bit of a transgression, Elhokar WAS indirectly responsible for Kaladin's troubles (his brother, the shardblade, etcetera), and Kaladin has proven to have severe depression and PTSD. As soon as he thinks of Tien, he loses grip with reality. Dalinar's mistakes are a... bit more varied and numerous. Let's see here: getting drunk in the prologue, allying himself with Sadeas, allowing Roshone to retain a degree of power, and naming Amaram the head of the Knights Radiant while simultaniously not realizing that there wasn't anything special about Kaladin (or Shallan). Also, Dalinar really hasn't had to address his mistakes. Kaladin and some of the highprinces bailed him out Sadeas' betrayal, and nobody other than Kaladin (with Amaram) has really harped on Dalinar for the others. You could argue that Gavilar's death is punishment enough, but I really don't think that works, especially if Gavilar was a twisted as the Sons of Honor. I really don't think that the same argument can be made for Kaladin. Between the bridge runs, fighting Szeth, and saving Dalinar, Kaladin has almost single-handedly made up for his and others' mistakes. I know that I should probably reserve this judgement until Highprince of War comes out, but at this point in the series, I think that Dalinar is relatively undeserving of the leadership of the new Radiants, and that Kaladin is simply a better hero. Also, while I commend Dalinar for not taking the throne, I really think that he should have. For him to put the entire kingdom in jeopardy just so that he could keep an outdated promise to his brother is a bit selfish. If he had the support that he said he had, he should have at least overseen Alethkar during the Parshendi war. Elhokar was in no way ready for the throne, and Dalinar could have used those few years to stabilize the kingdom and demonstrate to Elhokar how to be a better king. To me, his refusal to take at least temporary control was the wrong move. Sorry if this is a bit disjointed and/or ranty. What do you guys think of this? Who do you think is the better hero? Or the better character?
  21. Hello to all! It's my first post here, please be kind This piece is a rough faceshot sketch of Elhokar and the ten highprinces, drawn by pencil. (Full resolution: [x]) To know who is who, here is the key: (Full resolution: [x]) I did a keyword search for the exact description of each character, but still couldn't find useful information about Bethab and Thanadal, so I had to make some wild speculations. Actually I'm not so sure about the appearance and outfit design for all of them, any suggestions are welcomed =) (I did have a try, though )
  22. So, my though that Cusciesh is voltron spren has now been pretty well debunked, I would like to propose a grander, more elaborate theory/thought. Based on the epigraph above, we see that there are usually 3 Bondsmiths at a time, regardless of how large other orders may be or not. It may be that the Stormfather can bond more than one Radiant at a time given his power level, but I'm not inclined to think so. In tWoK/WoR, we hear of only 3 Spren who are very large and very in charge of what they have going on. The Stormfather: proven to Nahel bond with Bondsmiths Cusciesh: definitely spren, probably related to the KR the Nightwatcher: gives the "old magic" but we don't know what that means really and presumed to be a Spren My theory is that each of the 3 bondsmiths are bonded to one of these Spren, and that in some way, these 3 spren are similar in the way that honorspren or cryptics are different. I.e. not all Honorspren are like Syl in temperment, nor all Cryptics like Pattern. I don't have a lot to back it up really, other than that there are 3 very large Spren floating around Roshar and there are only 3 Bondsmiths at a time. Only other mention of Bondsmiths shows that they had a unique ability and they alone could address the divine duties and natures of the Heralds. I think that is because they are bonded to the 3 single most powerful/knowledgeable/oldest Spren on Roshar Well, there it is... let me know your thoughts!!
  23. Okay, this will be a bare-bones theory. I've only read WoK twice and WoR once, I don't have either book with me, and I'm at work. Oh, and I'm also not crazy-genius-into-this like you all are (compliment!). I did a quick search but didn't see this covered. So feel free to flesh out or dismiss. I theorize that Adolin will be Dalinar's squire for several reasons: 1. I can't stomach him being a Radiant at this point. There are already too many Kholin Radiants. I also think that his story arc needs him to deal with suddenly NOT being the best, most powerful, and most desireable for the first time in his life, and it needs to deal with that fully. 2. He may have already used Stormlight. In the duel, he admits that taking on two Shardbearers is possible but difficult, and yet he ALMOST defeats four on his own before he starts losing and Renarin and Kaladin jump in. 3. If anyone were a squire to Dalinar, it would be Adolin. I think it would flow nicely from their relationship in WoK as Adolin learns to understand and respect Dalinar's views more and begins to see the strength his father has. 4. The only REAL evidence: he doesn't feel the Thrill when fighting Eshonai. The lack of the Thrill was a big part of Dalinar's arc in WoK, and I don't think it's just happenstance that Sanderson specifically mentions Adolin not feeling the Thrill. Being a squire to Dalinar would explain it. So yeah, thoughts?
  24. Before speaking his oaths to the Stormfather, Dalinar has a vision perhaps “stronger” than the others. The Stormfather says he didn’t send it: “No vision was sent this morning…A simple dream. Not of me.” I believe that Dalinar’s “dream” is a vision from the spiritual realm. The vision suggests that Dalinar had access to the spiritual realm as a boy. Now that he has unburdened himself of his guilt for “letting Gavilar die,” the visions reintroduce themselves. Dalinar is a Bondsmith, with Divine Attributes of “pious/guiding.” He may need spiritual realm access to accomplish his tasks. Dalinar’s sensitivity to the spiritual realm may be why the Stormfather chose Dalinar to reveal his visions to and to bond with. In the dream, Dalinar stands in darkness, then turns about and sees furniture and furnishings he remembers (emphasis in original): “My house, he thought. As it was when I was a child. Back before conquest, back before Gavilar… “Gavilar…hadn’t Gavilar died? No, Dalinar could hear his brother laughing in the next room. He was a child. They both were. “Dalinar crossed the shadowed room, feeling the fuzzy joy of familiarity. Of things being as they should be. He’d left his wooden swords out. He had a collection, each carved like a Shardblade. He was too old for those now, of course, but he still liked having them. As a collection. “He stepped to the balcony doors and pushed them open. “Warm light bathed him. A deep, enveloping, piercing warmth. A warmth that soaked down deep through his skin, into his very self. He stared at that light, and was not blinded. The source was distant, but he knew it. Knew it well.” In sequence, the first noteworthy aspect is the snippet, “back before Gavilar…Gavilar…hadn’t Gavilar died?” I interpret this phrasing to mean that Dalinar replaces one chain of thought with another. The unfinished thought refers to something other than Gavilar’s death that we do not yet know (and probably won’t find out until Book 5, Dalinar’s book). I suspect Dalinar remembered something that Gavilar imposed on him that for a long time cut Dalinar off from the spiritual realm and these visions. Some may disagree with this interpretation, believing Dalinar pauses because he remembers that Gavilar is dead. I think my interpretation is supported by the sequence of the “back befores” – the second seeming to come earlier in time than the first as Dalinar’s thoughts are returning to when he was a child. Regardless, the proper interpretation of this snippet doesn’t really affect the overall conclusion. I include it because I believe it is a look forward to what will come out in Dalinar’s book. The second noteworthy aspect is the emphasis on “things being as they should be.” “Should” states an ideal to which to aspire. The spiritual realm is the place of ideals. The paragraph further implies that Dalinar is done playing with swords, wooden or real. This bit foreshadows Dalinar becoming a shardless KR later in the chapter. Now the key passage, how he “knew well” the distant light, that it enveloped him in a “piercing warmth” and did not blind him when he stared at it, that it soaked “into his very self.” The “sun” in the cognitive realm is cold, but this light source embraces Dalinar down to his soul with warmth and comfort. Every aspect of this description reads like a spiritual experience, Moses standing before the burning bush. Further evidence: the surgeon stitching Dalinar’s wound during the climactic battle is amazed that Dalinar can still use his arm after so much scarring from prior wounds. SOMETHING must have supernaturally healed Dalinar over the years. Perhaps it was an incipient bond with the Stormfather, but I think it has more to do with some sort of spiritual bond. My thought is that the light source represents the remnants of Honor in the spiritual realm, just as the Highstorms represent it in the physical realm and the Stormfather represents it in the cognitive realm. Investiture, according to Brandon, exists in all three realms. Perhaps the spiritual realm has infused Dalinar with some limited self-healing power comparable to the resurrecting power of Divine Breath. But such speculation is best explored elsewhere than a post that is already too long.,. What are the implications of a KR with access to the spiritual realm? The epigraph about Melishi the Bondsmith provides some guidance. I’d appreciate hearing what others think on this subject.
