  1. As many of you may have noticed, there is a thread for the upcoming SW VII (so excited, by the way), but how about the books, and all the games and comics? This thread is basically just to allow for sharing of SW awesomeness without being restricted to SW VII. So I'll start: Who here has ever heard of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic? I must say, it is quite possibly the best $5 I have ever spent. It has given me over a hundred hours of enjoyment, and is like a playable novel. EDIT: For Seonid, this thread is not meant to step on your toes at all, I just wanteveryone to be able to appreciate the full spectrum of Star Wars. Peace is a lie, there is only Passion, Through Passion I gain Strength, Through Strength I gain Power, Through Power I gain Victory, Through Victory, my chains are broken. The force shall bring me, A full Irish Breakfast, Complete with both White and Black Pudding.
  2. okay. confession of a bookaholic. I first read Elantris when I was thirteen and loved every second of it. I must of reread it... a lot of times. but then the wear and tear of receiving a handmedown book kicked in and all the pages fell out so my parents threw it away(G rated version in case children are reading). two years later I had completely forgotten who had written that book but I still loved the memory of Elantris. then one day, on my kindle, I instinctively bought The Way of Kings in a seemingly against-my-will fashion (later I would learn that his books simply did that to new readers) and read it in a day-and-a-half. I. Loved. Every. Second. I started buying his books in bulk, infinity blade, legion, and Steelheart. and then I realized... this was the guy WHO WROTE ELANTRIS!!!! What the flip? so what are your Sanderson face palm moments? Or the seemingly coincidental happenstance situations that prove that heaven is real? When did you become Cosmere aware? and most importantly... how long did it take you to read TWoK?
  3. I am not familiar with what the writing tropes in literature actually are and i was wondering to what extent does Brandon, and other authors, use them? What are common Fantasy writing tropes? Does Brandon ever make a mockery of the use of them? I felt like that is what he was doing in The Stormlight Archive with Rosharan society having such strict Gender specific roles. To me it made me look at the whole idea of Gender specific roles as ridiculous. Did he ever do something like that with other writing tropes that i never noticed? Finally, is there a trope that Brandon consistently uses across most of his books?
  4. Hello, people of the interwebs! It recently occurred to me that I'm not really sure which genre most of the Sharders prefer. I would assume that they all at least enjoy fantasy novels, since good ol' Bandersnatch writes mostly fantasy. My personal favorite happens to be (surprise, surprise) fantasy! Sword and Sorcery, High Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, Heroic Fantasy, I love all shapes, forms and versions. I love the swords, the close-up-in-your-face-take-your-head-off action scenes. I love the world building behind it and getting to know all of these different creatures and races and landscapes. I love the magic, whether that is the classic fireballs and summoning spells or the innovative drinking metal kinds. I love the medieval setting, with armor and horses and castles and keeps. I just really enjoy fantasy. What genre do you love, and why? Vote now and let your voice be heard!
  5. Hello Everyone, For a School project that i am doing i have to make a presentation to my Librarian on seven books that i have read, and in the presentation i must recommend whether the book should be added to the library's collection, or i can recommend that it be removed. The decision to add or remove must be based on the gender stereotyping found in each book and what people will learn about the role of gender from reading it I am basically done with the presentation but i feel like i am repeating myself throughout the presentation and i have run out of good ideas/examples. So i thought that i would turn to the community that i know best and that i have found to be extremely intelligent and fair in regards to discussion/argument of a topic. Which is why i humbly come to you now. The seven books (Note that i can use an entire series as a single book) that i have chosen to analyse in terms of Gender stereotyping are as follows: 1) Stormlight Archive 2) Mistborn 3) warbreaker 4) Elantris 5) The Painted Man (Peter V. Brett) 6) The Name Of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss) 7) The Black Prism (Brent Weeks) I look forward to the discussions we will have around this sensitive topic. if i do use any ideas or comments from our discussion i will reference it completely.
  6. So I have this summer reading for my new high school an I'm stuck between five books on reading. First is the Divided We Fall Second is Brave New World Third is The Good Earth Fourth is Feed Fifth is Catcher in the Rye If any of you have read the books and could put my path in the right direction I would be eternally grateful. Also if anyone on here goes or use to go to a dual enrollment school can you share your experiences on that, did you benefit from it?
  7. So, I noticed that we are all about fantasy books on this forum, but are there any sf fans beside me? If there are, then let's talk about sf books. Myself, I absolutely love sf books, some of my top 5 books ever are sf, and I do read quite a lot of this genre. I absolutely love Isaac Asimov books (especially the series about Robots), Ender's Game. And just after I finish the remaining Cosmere books (I still need to read Warbreaker and short stories), I'm going to read Echopraxia by Peter Watts, because I've read his Blindsight before and that is probably the most brilliant book I've ever read. What are your favourite sf books? Do you prefer hard or soft sf? Let's discuss. ; D
  8. I was wondering if anyone else was a fan of Melissa Keil and her novels.I for one love her style of writing and her first book, Life in outer space, is one of my top five favorite books. Her second book, The Incredible Adventures of Cinnamon Girl, is also an exceptional story. For those who are unacquainted with her works I would recommend checking out her blog.(http://melissakeil.com/).
  9. If you could be any character from the Mistborn series which would it be? Would you be one of the good characters? or would you chose to be one of the bad? Going forth on that theme if you could chose a character that that didn't have certain powers although you liked the attributes which power would you give them? Try to keep the post from giving away spoilers so those that are still reading the books can take part without having plots ruined for them. (ME INCLUDED AS I AM ONLY 1/3 THROUGH THE 3rd BOOK)
  10. As the Cosmere is a universe that will eventually spread over ten planets and forty books I think it's safe to say that we would all like a Companion Encyclopedia at some point that fleshes out more of the history and universe not told in the books. Now, in a lot of ways, Drgonsteel will probably be are Silmarillion, as it will explain the key origins of almost every foundation in the Cosmere. Such as Hoid, the Shards, there Holders and Adonalsium. So in a way that's covered. But what about something like "The World of Ice and Fire" but for the Cosmere? Maybe written in universe by Khriss, the 17th Shard or even Harmony or one of the other Shards. If something like that where to come around what would you like it to include? For me it would be.. - Official character portraits for all of the main characters and shards.By the artists who did "The World of Ice and Fire", it would be amazing to have real good looking official art of all of them finally. (And also help the Coppermind actually look professional.) - Detailed descriptions and maps of all the Major Shard Worlds. - Expansion on each one's history if we don't get that in the books themselves. ( For example:TLR's early days when uniting the world, the first Fjordell Empire, Sunmaker uniting Alethkar, etc.) - Expansion on lore characters who aren't Hoid or the Shards (Like again, Sunmaker, Alendi, the First Returned, etc.) - Comparing the different Shards, there magic and how much the Holders were each changed by there intent. (Also maybe musing about which Shards got along, either from there past as humans or how there intents interact) Ars Arcanum style. - Authors musings on what is happening in the Cosmere, like there reactions to the end of Mistborn or the Stormlight Archive and what they thought about it. - More official info on the three realms and how they work. - A detailed list of Hoid's alias in alphabetical order, done by Nazh who complains about having to do it that way. What else would you guys like to see if we got something like this?
  11. The majority of us here are obviously fans of fantasy and/or scifi, so I'm curious, fantasy fans: 1 What are some of your favorite non-speculative fiction authors? 2 Favorite non-fiction author? 3 And favorite non-literature writer? Mine are probably: 1 Charles Dickens, Thomas Pynchon, James Joyce and Mark Twain 2 Joseph Campbell 3 Maynard James Keenen, Tarantino, and Kevin Smith
  12. If we lived in the Cosmere, how would our songs, quotes, movies, etc. be changed? For example: Now Your Just Some Bridgeman That I Used to Know. (Now Your Just Somebody That I Used to Know) Cosmere Wars (Star Wars) Hoid Who (Doctor Who) Settlers of New Skadrial (Settlers of Catan) Studio Shash (Studio C)
  13. Hello fellow sharders, After being clinically obese since I was 2 years old, dozens of medically-supervised weight-loss attempts, and cortisol levels off the charts preventing me from being successful, I'm finally going in for bariatric surgery (VSG for those in the know) on Feb 12. That said, I'm going to be laid up for a while recovering before I can return to work, tooling around the yard, or hiking. As one Sanderfan who's read all of his works several times over to the rest of you, any suggestions for other books or movies I might enjoy while still on large doses of painkillers?
  14. Hi all! I am sure I'm not the first to think of it, but I have an idea that we'll probably have characters of 10 different Knights Radiant Orders for the next books' flashbacks. So who would you consider the most possible candidates, if that's the case? So far we have 2 books published and know about next three. That'll be: Kaladin: Windrunners Shallan: Lightweavers Szeth: Skybreakers Eshonai : ? Dalinar: Bondsmiths Then, if it's true that Renarin have a book, there will be: Renarin: Truthwatchers Also I think it's very possible for Lift to have her own book, which will cover Edgedancers too. So the ones left are Stonewards, Willshapers, Dustbringers and Elsecallers. For Elsecallers I REALLY hope for Jasnah, I'd like to know her backstory, and for Stonewards I'd say Taln. So what do you guys think about that? And does anyone know what order Eshonai could be?
  15. So I have a 3 month old baby who is fighting a few bugs right now. My wife wanted to prop up the crib to help her breathing and went to our bookshelves.... This horrified me because I know she's looking for thick books, and lo and behold the first thing she grabs was my first edition WoK. I quickly thought on my feet and told her that since there's no other book that thick it'll be uneven since we'll need two books to prop up the ends... Assisting in the book search we happily settled upon her twilight books (whew). Does anyone else have any unorthodox uses for the WoK hardcover or unorthodox uses you've managed to avoid?
  16. Just curious.. Personally, I'm a big audiobook fan.. I own every book Brandon has released on Audiobook. I find I don't really have the time to read anymore but can multitask and listen to books to make my work day go faster. I'm big fans of Michael Kramer and Kate Redding. They are married if you didn't know.. (Kramer is the Narrator of WoK, Mistborn, and he and his wife did the entire WoT series)
  17. I was reading TWoK again and noticed some things that reminded me do LDS Book of Mormon stories and doctrine so I decided to start this thread. Brandon has said time and time again that he never intentionally writes his religion into his books. He has said that it does have some influence on him, as does everything in his life, so it does influence it from time to time. This thread should remain peaceful and not turn into a flame war. I'll start off with these two things I found. Kaladin dodging all the arrows from the Parshendi reminded me of Samuel the Lamanite and how he was protected from arrows. This line by Taravangian, "It is better for man to sin than for a people to be destroyed" reminded me of 1 Nephi 4:13 where it says, "It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." What have you found?
