  1. How do you think a misting with an external enhancement metal would (or wouldn't) affect an Aviar's abilities? It doesn't seem that they keep any particular store of investiture in their bodies that could be burned/wiped away, so would it work a bit like how a Leecher burning chromium while holding onto a shardbearer can keep them from summoning their blade, but actually destroying a shardblade with leeching is near-impossible?
  2. This is a thread for thinking up cool aviar powers NOT discussion about what powers they actually have confirmed. I have 2 ideas: Aviar that can create illusions Aviar that can hypnotize lesser animals
  3. How do Aviar get the Investiture they need for their ablilities? Do they have limits for how much they can draw on that Investiture?
  4. If you gave a single Aviar all the powers normally available in Patji's system via Hemalurgy, turning them into something of a parrot Inquisitor, and then Bonded it, would you be able to become a Mistborn version of Patji's magic system?
  5. If you used a Hemalurgic spike to grant an Aviar a piece of a Radiant Spren, would the person who bonded the Aviar gain Radiant powers?
  6. Aviar seem to draw a small amount of investiture directly from the spiritual realm to fuel their powers, without needing to use a catalyst, like how Allomancers need to. If someone could Hemalurgically take an aviar power, could they use this to get ‘free’ fuel for any other manifestations of investiture they might have, such as Surgebinding or Allomancy?
  7. While Sixth of the Dusk, I noticed that many of the creatures on Patji have a sort of "mind sense", that allows them to track and detect you by your mental signature. The Aviar seems to naturally be able to share their powers with someone they've bonded, but those powers can be taken by hemalurgy. Even so, it's apparently more complicated than taking most other invested arts, since the aviar has power over the bond, similar to radiant spren. But what if you try to spike powers out of the other creatures of Patji? They (presumably) don't rely on a bond to generate their powers, so you could take those with hemalurgy no problem, right? Although, do they even have the same range of abilities, or are aviar simply superior to them in this way? And one last thing about this concerning hemalurgy, does this mind sense count as an invested power, like allomantic powers, or is it an innate attribute, like strength or intelligence?
  8. Is it only an aviar’s bonded companion that gets their power, like the spren of Roshar, or do the aviar benefit from their own talents as well? If someone could modify themselves somehow to be able to eat the same worms that provide the aviar with their talents, would the person also get those benefits, or would they need to bond with someone else to make it work?
  9. Allomancers, surgebinders, and most other magic users need an influx of kinetic investiture in order to use their abilities, but it seems that aviar talents don’t. So, does this mean that Aviar grant their talents to people as a passive effect of having static investiture, similar to the heightenings of Nalthian awakeners?
  10. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I am relistening to Oathbringer in preparation for RoW, and I noticed when Shallan sees Mraize while he is undercover with Sadeas' troops that Mraize has a green chicken with a wicked looking beak. Could this be an aviar from First of the Sun?
  11. Thanks to Sak, we know that birds not native to the Pantheon can also become Aviar Thanks to Mraize, we know that people not native to First of the Sun can Bond AvIar We know from this WoB, that Kandra in the guise of a bird cannot become an Aviar: What about birds from other Shardworlds? Could they eat the parasitic worms on Patji's Perpendicularity and become Aviar?
  12. The life cycle of the parasite giving Aviars power has some implications. It is clear what advantages the Aviars are getting out of the symbiosis. They are not eaten because they are concealed. Going to the perpendicularity as they are hatched is a behavior that is strongly selected for. But what is in it for the worms? At first glance a worm whose bird is eaten dies. So he won't reproduce as often. Right. But a worm whose descendants don't reach the perpendicularity cannot grant powers. In fact, we must doubt that they even survive. The worm is adapted to the perpendicularity after all. So the selection pressure ends after one generation. So how did this work? Something returns the offspring of successful symbionts to the pool. I guess it is the chicks themselves. The coevolution could happen because birds are using the same orifice for defecation and reproduction. That way the eggs of the symbionts get attached to the eggs and to the hatchlings after hatching, who then transport them back to the perpendicularity where the cycle begins again. Hence continous selective pressure to grant powers is created. But it would not work with mammals (except monotremata).
  13. Is it only the Aviar that can manifest abilities after eating the parasites in the Patji's fingers? We know that Sak, a non-native bird was able to develop powers. But is it limited to only birds? I think there's a WOB about humans not developing powers after eating them, but what about other animals? What is special about birds that allows them to access the investiture?
  14. Why do people spend a lot of money on aviars? That may seem like a trivial question at first. They are magic and give you powers. But let's look at the details. First, exclusivity: As far as mainlanders know the rule is one aviar per person at a time. Hence if you get one aviar you cannot just add to your powers, but you choose that power closing off the other possibilities. Second, the masking birds sell. Mating feathers from Kokerlii would attract a trapper. Why would you buy an aviar hiding your mind on the mainland? The predators of the Pantheon are limited to it and the waters near it. There are only a few hundred trappers. Every one of them already has a masking aviar. The Ones Above can detect aviar with a machine. Hence the masking ability is useless to them. So they want another aviar which conveys a power not found on other worlds. There must be something on the mainland that you need to hide your mind from. What could that be? It seems to me that the likeliest answer to that is other aviar. Now what is an ability we have seen on First of the Sun, not seen elsewhere? The most striking is outright telepathy. I conclude that there is an aviar that enables you to read minds.
  15. So in the stormlight archive there is a character in the ghostbloods, named mraize and in one scene he is said to have a "chicken" (Rosharan for bird) which brandon has confirmed to be a Aviar. Any Ideas on what it's power might be?

    Sixth of the Dusk

Something I threw together for a February drawing challenge, couldn't find a section for the Sixth of the Dusk- so I hope this is the right place to share!
  17. A thought recently came to me. It has been mentioned that of all of the current cosmere stuff, Sixth of the Dusk is the latest, chronologically, in-world. The Ones Above are theorized to be spacefaring Scadrians from MB Era 4. They appear connected. Of the Aviar powers we've seen, they seem remarkably similar to Allomantic abilities. Aviar that show your death are similar to both atium and electrum, whilst Aviar that shield your mind are reminiscent of copper. There are predators like nightmaws that have an ability similar to that of bronze. Basically, that parasite over at Patji's eye is animalian Allomancy. You eat it, you gain Allomantic powers that are similar to human ones. This seems plausible, but do you fine folks see any holes in this?
  18. So just a general question about the aviar. Are they unique species that Brandon created specifically for the world, or are they species that exist on earth? If so what would the analogous species be?
  19. Prior to the release of Khriss' essay on the Drominad System by Tor, I included a question for Brandon to answer in my pre-order. I wanted to know if Patji's Eye was a perpendicularity on First of the Sun, and if so would a creature like a Nightmaw worldhop. The first part is a RAFO...and probably a legitimate "read and find out" because Khriss more or less confirms this without saying it's Patji's Eye. However, Brandon did answer the second part of my question: non-sapeint creatures can worldhop, but it's hard. My motive for this question was that a long time ago I wondered if Thunderclast were from other worlds (probably not) and if Aviar could be on other planets on their own accord (I originally thought maybe Denth's parrot could be an Aviar). So for fun, I wanted to see if Nightmaw could worldhop, because come on, how crazy scary would it be to run across a Nightmaw on Roshar or Scadrial or Nalthis?! Now I also imagine every horse in the Cosmere is a Ryshadium that wants to kick every stranger in the head. All in all, this isn't a big WOB, but it's at least somewhat interesting.
