  1. We have WoB that Hoid can move forward in time, but does not live all of those years. Allomancy can be used to make time bubbles that move the user forward in time and it's implied that compounding can enhance allomancy as well. Hoid is a feruchemist, and quite likely a mistborn as well. So I think that Hoid uses feruchemy to enhance allomantic Cadmium and move forward in time.
  2. I've been wondering about this lately. We know it's not possible to Soulcast gemstones, but magic systems from different worlds can often exploit loopholes (like Zahel using Stormlight instead of Breath). Is it possible to make metals for use in the Metallic Arts using Soulcasting? One thing to consider would be if metals on the other Shardworlds have the same link to Preservation that they do on Scadrial. We see Hoid using Allomancy in WoR, but he could have got the metal from Scadrial.
  3. I was wandering, if a character had both Allomancy and Feruchemy powers, could he fly by using an iron ring on one hand to store weight to becoming very light, and to use steel to push on that ring and fly in any direction he is pointing at?... That sound like a very cool method to fly through the Cosmere. And with delirium you can break the sonic barrier!!!!
  4. So I'm not sure if someone has had this theory before but here goes. I was reading "The Nature of Copper" and I came across this: "Bronze is a pushing metal, sure, so it allows you to sense what you would not have been able to otherwise. But wait, when you think about it, how is that really pushing anything? So I propose that all humans have some innate ability to sense investiture and bronze pushes that to a point of being actually useful and noticeable." -lord Claincy Ffnord I think this makes sense so I started thinking about how individuals with hemalurgic spikes have "open minds" that are easier to influence and control. This seems to indicate that people have innate mental defenses that can protect them from allomancy (and other types of mental control like Ruin's). So I was thinking that Copper (an internal pulling metal) might pull those defenses up making their pulses harder to "hear" with bronze as well as defending against emotional pushes and pulls. Problem: Copper is an internal metal and this would involve also pulling on the defenses of those around you. Proposed Solution: Copper already influences something outside the allomancer. It protects allomancers in a cloud around the smoker (If it didn't it would be much less useful. I guess it would still protect the user from emotional allomancy though). I have no idea how this works because it's an internal metal but it does. Side Note: If people have internal mental defenses that protect them, could you steal this with a hemalurgic spike and spike yourself to protect yourself from outside control. This could negate that weakness in hemalurgy (being controlled by emotional allomancy), although since getting another spike would itself make you easier to control it might take a lot of spikes, do nothing, or actually be harmful. -Also, since burning copper defends against all but the most powerful emotional allomancers, could you protect your mind from being taken over by burning it (if you were hemalurgiclly spiked and needed that protection)? Feel free to destroy my argument with logic or WoB.
  5. Draft 1: Forging The Spiritweb Forgive me for length, it is long, and hopefully complete. Disclaimer Let's begin by describing... The Nature of Investiture: Next, what is the spirit web? According to Cannon, lacking a better defenition than this, I have provided my own. (there is another descriptive quote under the topic of Hemelurgy, below) The Spirt-Web, is the sum total of all physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and other ties a person object or thing have to other people objects or things. The comparison to a physical web might be useful for many purposes. For a person, This Web defines who they are. To start our analogy, there will be several strands beginning at the center (the person in question) and extending outward, linking to past events, future hopes, current desires, descriptive attributes, and other details that accurately depict the SOUL of the person to whome this spirit web happens to belong. In addition to these, there will be many additional strands. Some of these additional strands will link to people, or ideas to which this person is familiar. There will be strands that connect one attirbute this person has attained, with others. Memories will form, Etcetera, etcetera. So far, this explains (sort-of) why the Spirit Web is approximately equal to the SOUL, as far as practical discussion is concerned. But what about mystical abilities? Yes, every mystical ability described in the Cosmere uses the spiritweb. Every mystical ability a given person has will either have it's own section of the spiritweb describing its function, or will utilize some pre-existing part of the web that they individually, or that all people possess. A Note on sDNA
  6. Seekers have described listening for allomancy users as listening for a pulse or a beat, and have referred to the waves of metals being burned in almost musical terms. I'm wondering if anyone has drawn a conclusive parallel with them and the Listeners (parshendi) since they also hear this music behind the scenes of consciousness. My thought is that they are both hearing the background patterns of investiture trying to force its way into our world like happened in Elantris. If so, then I think the Mistborn may be able to offer some secondhand knowledge of Listener forms to the Parshendi, and the Elantrians may be able to deduce the different resonant frequencies of their forms. Thoughts?
  7. So I was rereading HoA and when Vin is wailing on Inquisitors near the end and drawing on copious amounts of mist I noticed a lot of similarities..... It says that she breathed in the mists It also says something along the lines of there was a storm inside her or swirling or raging (don't have the book in front of me) It also said it was smoking off of her skin and that she breathed it out Let me qualify by saying that I am realatively new and haven't tried to scour all theories for this, so if I'm restating something I would love a link to the discussion. If not, Is there a correlation between stormlight and the mists more than just both being gaseous manifestations of the shard? It seems pretty intentional to me. I would love to hear your comments, questions, reprimands etc.
  8. This all comes from my friend, but he doesn't post here, so very little of this is my actual idea. We were just wondering if The Lord Ruler had the ability to worldhop. If anyone in Scadrial's history could, it would be him. I believe it's WoB that every Shardworld's arcana has at least one trick that allows for worldhopping. Scadrial has three arcana that we know of. The Lord Ruler was the unquestioned master of Allomancy and Feruchemy. He could use his feruchemy to power his allomancy; nicrosil speculation aside, we have no idea how he did that and no canon examples of anyone doing the same. He prolly knew more hemalurgy than anyone there's ever been on Scadrial. He had exclusive access to the god metals, one of them in enormous quantities. However Scadrian worldhopping happens, odds are very good that The Lord Ruler was at least theoretically capable of doing it. Then there's his Ascension. In that moment when he held Preservation's power, he could well have gained cosmeric knowledge. The way Sazed realized his Powers were once a part of something greater, Rashek could have realized there were other Powers out there, too. I realize it's all speculation. I just wonder if it's something The Lord Ruler was aware of.
  9. Hey everybody, first time posting and excited to join the community! Figured I could share some things about myself. Favorite Allomantic Metal: Tin Favorite Sanderson quote: “Belief?" "Yes," Sazed said. "Tell me, Mistress. What is it that you believe?" Vin frowned. "What kind of question is that?" "The most important kind, I think.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn: The Final Empire I've read Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, and I am currently reading Wheel of Time: Book 5. What are everyones favorite Brandon Sanderson quote and metal?
  10. There have been a lot of discussion among the Real-World!Scientists that there ar more than the 'Normal' Five Physical Senses. (Sight, Sound, Taste, Touch, and Smell.) Harvard thinks there's 11 Senses. (Internal, Time, Temperature, Kinesthetic, Pain, and Balance.) This sight beleives there could be as many as 21 senses. (They include Pressure, Itch, Body Position, Tension, Stretch, Thirst and Hunger,) So, could a WindWhiperer (Tin Ferring) store any of these Senses? Obviously (If you read the articles) storing some of the senses (Tension, Stretch, Kinesthetic) could seriously mess you up, and wouldn't have a benefit to tapping. Another question. Can you only store Human senses? Dogs and birds have another sense that humans don't. Magentoception. Magnet field Detection. If you gave feruchemy to a dog, could it store this sense? I'm willing to bet that if he did know of the 21 possible senses, he used 16 of them.
  11. So I was just thinking of the WoB saying that there are ways to boost Allomancy with Feruchemy, similar in effect to compounding. And I thought, " What would happen if you were burning a metal Allomantically and then stored the investure in a nicrosil metal mind?" What I think would happen is you would store the effect and would then be able to boost your allomancy whenever you want. I'm not sure about it, but I really like the idea and it makes sense to me. I apologize that that was poorly phrased but its the best I could write. This might have been brought up before, but I didn't see anything. Well go ahead and gather your axes and machetes from the bin to the left.
  12. So as I'm looking at a quote from Brandon: Now, as we've understood it, this means that whatever power Allomancy taps into, Feruchemy can siphon it off. Taking it into a larger context however, you can realise that this means that an End-Neutral System can effectively be powered by a End-Positive System. Imagine a Feruchemist Worldhopping the Cosmere, only to return to Elantris after an exciting day - as they arrive, they activate the Aons they have inscribed on their MetalMinds, and instantly they are fully recharged. That's only where the possibilities begin! (I've just realised that using Stormlight to fuel Awakening is essentially Compounding - good on you, Vasher). Sorry if this has been realised before, but I just had my mind blown and needed an outlet. I've also very curious to see how this relates to End-Negative Systems, or even Reverse-Compounding (as I believe we have WoB that the Lord Ruler enhanced his Allomancy with Feruchemy). On another note, I'm going to begin compiling notes on how to make the most overpowered being in the Cosmere. Examples of this would be abusing this version of Feruchemical Compounding, an Awakened Mistcloak, Nahel Bond Spren, Awakened sword, Honourblade, etc,. I would be most delighted to see if anyone else can come up with some overpowered combinations.
  13. I am rereading all of the Cosmere books and in HoA when Spook removes the Spike giving him Pewter he is overwhelmed by all that he could ignore using Pewter and he lets his Tin dim so that he no longer feels everything like he usually does. But when he Flares it again this happens. "With a scream of pain. Spook flared tin. As the metal always did, it brought a wave of sensations-thousands of them, shocking him at once. Pain. Feeling. Hearing . Sounds, smells, lights. And lucidity." emphasis mine. Wouldn't having all of those sensations at once cause him to to go into shock, instead of bringing him lucidity? I thought about it and what I came up with is it doesn't increase his senses, as much as it increases his mind making him more able to process the wide array of information his senses give him. ( I'm not sure if people know this but people hear and see far more than we think, we just can't process the information so it gets ignored. ) Not making him smarter just more observant. Anyway, thoughts? Am I completely bonkers or am I on to something? ( If you aren't quite sure what I'm asking/saying just ask and I will try to clarify. But remember I am a New Zealander and we basically speak another language. It's so hard trying to translate Kiwi into American )
  14. So the Sanderson store online has allomantic symbol decals and I'm having trouble deciding which to get. I've narrowed it down to pewter (my favorite) or I get the steel symbol to put over a heart decal, because that would be Epic... Out of curiosity has anyone bought one of these decal sets before? Was it easy to install? Is it a good size? Etc.
  15. It seems to be a commonly accepted fact that Preservation fundamentally changed allomancy before he sacrificed his consciousness to trap Ruin. It is said that he took away cadmium and bendalloy from the "official" ranks of allomantic metal and replaced them with atium (and malatium?). Two things: 1) Did he actually change the way in which allomancy works? Or did the people just not know about those metals yet? (I tend to believe the latter… but feel free to change my mind!) 2) If allomancy was fundamentally changed for that period, how was it changed? Was it the introduction of new Mistings or what? If it's quite obvious that what the answers are, please link me to the source (i.e. the wiki page, specific q&a, etc.). If not, the debate is on!
  16. Has anyone else ever noticed that The symbol for Kaladin with the crescent and the spears looks like a horizontally transposed Allomantic Bronze symbol? Do you think he's going to snap soon? I mean he's been thru SOME bad stuff but I think he's due for a little more punishment. (Note this is totally facetious and I'm kidding) I've thought this since the first time I read the book so I'm a little surprised it's never come up here before.
  17. I keep coming across talks about how two new metals are left to be revealed, but I have my confusions regarding this matter! Is this statement made in reference to harmony's statement in the 'words of founding', because I believe that chromium bendalloy were discovered only after the trilogy, and the two metals might refer to these two metals! Or is this statement made in reference to miles 'hundredlives' last words: 'One day, the men of gold and red, bearers of the final metal, will come to you. And you will be ruled by them.'???
  18. Technically, if you ignore your electrum shadows (made easier if your eyes are closed) your future won't change, will it? So if you ignore your electrum shadows, like it seems Vin and Elend did, would your future really change? Of course, if you not paying attention made it not change, then you'd pay attention, so it would change. But thats a paradox... so..
  19. It has occurred to me that the Lord Ruler had FULL MISTBORN powers as well as FULL FERUCHEMIST powers. Not to mention Hemalurgy AND access to almost all metals. Being a full Mistborn + full Feruchemist means that he could Duralumin-Flare-Hemalurgy-Compound-Ultimate-Healing. Not to mention EVERYTHING ELSE. He could store ultimate weight and EXPLODE Kredik Shaw as well as probably most of the world. With that much power, how could he even possibly let Vin get close to him? He could probably just use Chromium as luck and Vin would just die spontaneously or loose her powers or something. Was he really that sure of himself that he couldn't kill her, or was he tired of living? Did he want to die?
  20. So apparently all metals are allomanticlly reactive, but some just have the effect of killing you. If you were to burn Lead, you could die. So when does an alloy become a bad alloy? Kelsier said that the Purer the metal is, the more power you get, but if the alloy is off, you still get Power. So if you're burning 98% tin and 2 % lead, then the lead doesn't do anything. Yet, if you burn 91% tin, and 9% lead, you get pewter. When does a metal become a weak Alloy? is 96% tin 4% lead a weak Tin or a Weak Pewter? Is it Both? I'm assuming that since you can burn all metals, they all have they're own sDNA, but how is the sDNA of a non-allomantic metal deadly? and how do two types of sDNA combine to form a new alloy? When does a pewter alloy have enough lead to become deadly? For that matter, if Aluminum destroys the sDNA of metals, how can it possibly be alloyed with Copper? Recap, When does a percentage become weak? Deadly? How does it become deadly?
  21. I would like to take the time to again warn that this post CONTAINS SPOILERS. It also contains some of my own theories. I will outline why I think there is something wrong with how Atium works in Allomancy and give suggestions on how I think it should work. If you find any mistakes in my logic or you have a reference that discredits one of my assertion please comment with it. This theory is something I want to be proven wrong on. Brandon's Allomancy/Hemalurgy/Feruchemy magic system is something I absolutely love, yet I cannot reconcile the issues I've found. Basis/Lore I feel that the way Atium works is incongruent with the logic of how Lerasium would indicate it would work. In the beginning it was said that humans did not exist on Scadrial, Ruin and Preservation had to work together in order to create them. Preservation had to promise Ruin that she would let him destroy the world (as is his nature) in the future if he would work with her this time. It was also said that Feruchemy came ages before the other metallurgic arts. I think that Ruin and Preversation created Feruchemy as a consequence of their collaboration. Allomancy (Net positive): Preservation’s power arrived during the first ascension, through Rasheck sharing the Lerasium beads with his most loyal companions. Allomancy generates greater force/energy than what is consumed from the metal. Hemalugry (Net negative): Ruin’s power and would be innate in the world. Some of the power is lost when using hemalurgy, the one with the spike always has a weaker version of the ability than it's original owner had. Ferucehmy (Net neutral, but not net zero): Exists through the merging of the two powers. Weak now, strong later. This is where I start to see the incongruent behaviour. Lerasium is a god metal, and everyone is capable of consuming it; Skaa or noble alike, and grants full-fledged Mistborn-dom. Brandon said that being a god metal, Lerasium has special properties in how it rewrites your "spiritual DNA". I feel that Atium should be the same way; everyone should be able to consume it as it is also a god metal. Atium and Lerasium are the physical manifestations of shardic power, and like actual shards they should both also be able to be picked up by everyone. This is probably the reason behind why Lerasium can be consumed by everyone. Atium’s Allomantic Effect Firstly, Preservation was attributed greater foresight. This is how Preservation was able to win out in the end and not have to give in to Ruin. Thus, why is it that Atium gives foresight as an allomatic effect? Secondly, if Lerasium’s allomatic effect grants the power of net positivity, then Atium’s allomatic effect should grant net negativity. I think that Atium being net negative, it would possibly have these effects... 1) if you are a Mistborn it would turn you into a normal human being. 2) if you are already a normal human, it kills you as ruins nature is destruction. 3) If you are a Misting it would turn you into something akin to a spren with a nature that would be dependent on the type of Misting you were. 4) If you were a Ferring, it would only partial destroy you, leaving only a fragment of your physical/spiritual/cognitive aspects behind as a shell of your former self, which depends on the type of Misting you were. 5) It’s hard to say what you would be if you were a Feruchemist and burned Atium. You could be destroyed, as your net negativity would be greater than your net positivity, but it could vary. An interesting idea would be that you cease to exist but the three aspects of you (your physical/spiritual/cognitive aspects) would be fractured into separate beings, locked as metaphysical building blocks across the three realms. Atium-Lerasium Alloy Thus, the alloy of Atium and Lerasium would grant Feruchemy and not the ability to burn Atium as a Misting; as in the the creation of humans the merging of the powers created net neutrality.
  22. Let's have some fun! There are 16 metals in Allomancy, and 16 shards. Atium replaced the temporals metals with itself (a temporal metal of greater effect), because Preservation felt it should do so. Ruin was notable for not being able to see into the future well at all, but Atium let people see the near future very clearly. Using these facts, let's extrapolate! Assumptions: Each Shard's metal would replace one existing metal The shardmetal's effect would be superior but of the same basic type to the one it replaced The effect of the shardmetal should be some weakness of the shard, not their strength Atium replaced Electrum in effect, but took the place of Bendalloy (External, Pushing) which is opposite in that quadrant. Hemalurgy is more of an external pushing magic than an internal pulling one, so that corresponds So, in that case.... Tanavium Would replace the Internal, Pulling, Physical metal; Tin Tanavium grants the user a sense of absolute presence sense within an area, and the expanded mental capacity to comprehend and sort it. When burning Tanavium, the user would have complete positional and sensory knowledge of all objects, people and animals within a concentric spherical zone, with the knowledge becoming less precise the further away from the Allomancer they are. Honor is great at making bonds (mental), good at fixing people (enhancement), and decent at seeing the future (temporal). So his weakness is physical. He tends to do things internally (Nahel Bonds) and he pulls (inhales and attracts) rather than pushes Aonium Would replace the External, Pushing, Mental metal; Brass Aonium allows the Allomancer to dampen all mental affiliations to other things and people, effectively forcing a person to be unable to think about those things. An Aonium user could create an extremely focused (devoted ) person by dampening all thoughts except on the subject desired. Or they could dampen a specific subject, such as yourself, making you effectively invisible to that person as it would become impossible for them to think about you. Aona is great at making regional magics (physical), good at making enhanced Elantrian people (enhancement), and unknown at seeing the future (temporal). But the Aons and other programming languages are the ones that require the most specific cognitive input from the user, so that is Aona's weakness. Aona works mostly externally (glowing things and extra mediums like soulstamps and permanent aon writings) and pushes (affects other things more than the user) Skaium Would replace the Internal, Pushing, Mental metal; Bronze Skaium allows the Allomancer to not only sense any nearby usages of investiture, but flare or dampen them as well as sense and distinguish them. Flaring would act similar to nicrosil, while dampening would act similar to chromium, but more controllable. While you could not control the type or effects of the investiture, this would allow you to prevent being attacked by other allomantic abilities from a distance, or to enhance them, though with a finer grained detail. The abilities would be thwarted by a coppercloud. The allomantic strength of the user would determine how far you could seek, and how much you could dampen/flare their abilities (which would also be function of distance as well). Skai is great at making regional magics (physical), good at making enhanced Bone monks (enhancement), and unknown at seeing the future (temporal). But the Bloodsealing and Dahkorness both create/require things of lower than average intelligence (skeletals, fanatics =P), so mental is again the weakness. Skai works mostly internally (using blood, making zombies and adding bone growths) and pushes (magics affects other things more than the user) Endowmenteel Would replace the Internal, Pushing, Physical metal; Pewter Endowmenteel when burnt grants the user enhanced strength, speed, durability, health, and the enhanced mental capacity to control it in the form of skill. While active, the user has enhanced physical attributes of all types, heals quickly, and has an instinctive knowledge of his physical capabilities, similar to Kaladin when he holds Stormlight. The stronger the strength of the allomancer, the greater these capabilities. Endowment is great at giving powers (enhancement), good at seeing the future (temporal), and okay at increasing mental capacity (mental). Awakening and breath both give relatively few physical advantages, so physical is the weakness. Endowment works mostly internally (Breath) and pushes (breath effects the outside world, and awakening imputes itself onto objects) Cultivatium Would replace the External, Pulling, Physical metal; Iron Cultivatium not only allows the user to pull any metal towards them, as if attracted by a magnet to their center of gravity, but any object. It obeys the same general rules as Iron, except metal is not required. The strength of the pull is related by how close to metal the substance is - metal pulls VERY easily, and much more strongly than Iron. Stone and other non-organics pull well, dead organics pull poorly, and live organics very poorly. Cultivation is great at seeing the future (temporal), good at granting boons probably (enhancement), and the boons have strange mental effects often (mental). This leaves physical as her weakness We don't know how endowment works, but all the internal metals are taken, so it will have to be External, and cultivating seems more pulling, so we're gonna go with that. Bavadinium Would replace the External, Pushing, Enhancement metal; Nicrosil Bavadinium when burnt by an allomancer would have the unexpected effect of surging the spirit web of another person the Allomancer is in contact with. This ability would increase the allomantic abilities of the subject permanently - snapping any unsnapped allomancers, pushing practiced allomancers into savancy. In addition, any existing allomantic metals would surge compounded with the energy burnt from the Bavadinium user, causing a multiplicative nicrosil effect to take place. Strong Bavadinium allomancers would be able to cause single mistings to rarely gain a second misting power along with the above effects (usually one adjacent in the allomantic table) at a very low power. This is often dependent on the individual sDNA of the target. Flaring Bavadinium could occasionally force the awakening of an unbalanced Mistborn, with partial savancy as well as a broken spirit web with damage similar to hemalurgic effects. Bavadin's weak area might be Enhancement. I'm gonna say... External and Pushing Raysium Would replace the Internal, Pulling, Enhancement metal; Aluminium It's fitting that Odium should get the cosmere-strange Aluminium as his metal, though I did not have that in mind when I analyzed his abilities. Raysium, when burned, destroys an Allomancer's investiture, scattering and damaging it beyond repair, turning the Allomancer into an ordinary person, even possibly a slightly spiritually damaged person depending on their allomantic strength. Flaring Raysium would take the person to a similar level of spiritual damage as being hemalurgically spiked, without the accompanying physical trauma. Odium is great at seeing the future (temporal), good at making evil monsters (physical), and plays a lot of mind games (mental). Enhancement is what remains, right? We don't know how Odium works, but judging by all the monster unmade he makes and their abilities, such as death rattles, thrill, corrupted spren, parshendi void forms, etc... I'm gonna say his abilites are Internal and Pulling.
  23. I hope this topic can focus specifically on speculation about interacting magical systems. The topic should be general enough to allow meandering thoughts. Let me kick off with a few quick theories: A forger can create essence marks that can change a misting or ferring into a full mistborn or feruchemist: The idea here is that the cognitive realm can influence the spiritual realm just as it can change the physical. All current mistings and ferrings are descendants of full mistborn or feruchemists. The forger creates an essence mark that changes their history so that the power was passed in full rather simply in part. I imagine that the essence mark would be more involved the more generations that separate the individual from their mistborn or feruchemist ancestor. Bonus: A twinborn can have an essence mark created that grants them both full mistborn and feruchemist powers. Scary. An Individual with a bonded Seon on Roshar can manifest effects based on the Seon's Aon: Seons and spren are very similar in nature and form a similar bond to humans. The idea is that they are similar enough that the Seon bond would allow a human to absorb stormlight just as the Nahel bond does. A necessary supporting theory is that the region locking of Aons is due the process that the Dor is brought forth; however, the shaping of the investiture is independent of region, thus investiture fed directly to an Aon would cause a region independent effect. So an individual full of stormlight could feed it through the Aon in their Seon in order to create effects.
  24. We know based on compunding that it is possible to change the spiritual frequency of a metal through feruchemy. This allows the allomancy to power the feruchemical charge as opposed to the initial metallic charge, which leads me to wonder, what about a hemolurgical spike? I know according to a WoB (which for the life of me I cant find) that you cannot compound another feruchemist's charged metals, so this may be a case of "It's not yours so you cant burn it," Still, if it where possible to burn that spike, would it power the stolen Investiture type? Could you power regrowth with allomancy and copy a gold compounder? I know there isnt gonna be much information out there on the answers to these questions, jsut wanted to get people's opinions
