  1. I just finished reading secret history and I started thinking about the origin of the metallic arts. We know that the original allomancers were created from burning lerasium and that hemalurgists are created from their rituals, but as far as I'm aware there isn't a definitive origin to Feruchemy. I'm pretty sure Feruchemy is a combination of Preservation's and Ruin's investitures, think Sezed said something about this but I can't remember anything beyond him saying that it was end neutral for the power it gives. It is passed down, but if we can assume it's anything like allomancy, it was probably given to the ancestors of the terrace packmen. I can't imagine how it would have been given to them though. The first idea that came to my head was burning harmonium, but not only is that not chronologically possible, if that was the origin of Feruchemy I think it would have come up near the end of era 2 considering how much harmonium was thrown around by the end. The only logical thing I can think of is that Preservation and Ruin worked together to create it when they first created life. If we know this and I'm just unaware I'd like to be informed, but if not I'd like to hear other theories as to where Feruchemy comes from.
  2. -> Download Version 0.10 here! <- Hey, y'all! First thread on this forum. I'm a student at Future Games in Stockholm, and this is a pet project I'm working on between classes. I'm working in Unreal Engine 4 and its Blueprint visual coding system. I started this a couple of months ago when I was just done with the Hero of Ages and really into the allomancy magic system. I'm currently on Shadow of Self. No plot spoilers! Goal The goal of this project is to make an FPS-style Mistborn game, where you can play around with some schmexy allomancy. As a fan-made game, this will stay free-to-play. Caveat I want to make a good game representation of the Mistborn books, but some things are blocking the way. School. My time is spontaneously devoted to this project. Me. I'm not the most passionate die-hard fan, I just like the idea of a properly made game, as in true to the material. Controls. I want that feeling of being a cool Mistborn, jumping through the mists, throwing things around. But. Computer/console controls are severely limiting to a magical power that should take your whole body to control (Yeah, who knew, huh?). I want the player to have a good time, regardless of having read the books or not, so I will keep controls from being overly complicated. More advanced moves from the books will probably not be possible, so I will focus on making the general moves feel really cool and make sense for the player. Current features These are the features that I have right now. These will be updated as I go along. The most recent additions are in bold. 3. Hey guys, I've been working for a while now on the prototype for The Children of Preservation, a Mistborn themed 2D Platformer. It started as a fan tribute to Mistborn, I wanted to learn Unity with a cool project. But the first version had a good response from the community (I shared it mostly on Facebook groups). So I worked to make the prototype a bit more immersive, added more metals to burn, and other features like Hemalurgy. Before you try it out, I want to make sure you know a few things. 1 Everything needs to be polished. 2 I made custom artwork for the prototype so it was more immersive, but I'm no designer. The artwork would improve for a full version of the game. 3 I appreciate any feedback. Please don't hold back any notes. Those will be really helpful if there's a full version of the game. You can download the prototype for free here: https://dnxgaming.itch.io/the-children-of-preservation You can also take a look at the short teaser I made: Sadly, I don't have the resources to make a full version of the game on my own. I would need either a crowdfunding campaign or a publisher to get the right people and amount of time to develop it. In order to get that I would need a license. Which is not going to be easy. So, I'm asking for the support of the community to give the concept some momentum. If you want to see a full version of The Children of Preservation with awesome graphics and polished mechanics please drop a review at Itch.io or like the Facebook Page. Thanks!
  4. Copper Allomancy doesn't entirely make sense to me- it seems to smother the rippling effect created by Kinetic Investiture and simultaneously can smother the effects of Emotional Allomancy on the Smoker. That sounds a lot like if someone were to suck the energy out of soundwaves you could deaden the sound it would make. . . only, you can pierce a Coppercloud with sufficiently strong A-bronze, making the cloud useless. I see two possible explanations for this; 1. A Coppercloud makes a sort of bubble, similar to A-Bendalloy or Cadmium, and within that bubble the Copper actively hides the Pulses made by Kinetic Investiture, but does not actually remove them. A sufficiently strong Seeker can pierce this cloud however, allowing them to sense the Pulses hidden within. 2. The second (and I feel more likely) explanation is that a Smoker is actually absorbing the Pulses of nearby Kinetic Investiture (if I recall correctly, this is how Vin describes it when she senses Copper being burned), but the Smoker is not strong enough to absorb all of the Pulses, meaning that a strong enough Seeker can still potentially sense Pulses through the Cloud. This also could be why they are immune to Emotional Allomancy and why they could theoretically shield other as well (WoB)- they absorb the waves of Investiture that emanate from the Soother/Rioter, preventing it from ever reaching its target. If #2 is true, I think it may be possible to become a strong enough Smoker (via Hemalurgy, F-nicrosil, or external Investiture reserves) to make it impossible to sense any Pulses no matter how strong the Seeker. For example, let's say a Smoker with ten times the strength you'd normally find is strong enough to completely absorb all Pulses from regular powered Allomancy (stronger use of Investiture is easier to detect). Even if a Seeker with one hundred times the strength of that Smoker was to attempt to pierce their Coppercloud, there would be nothing to detect, so they'd sense nothing.
  5. It is known that if you alloy Lerasium with another type of Allomantically viable metal you will create a metal that will turn you into a Misting that can burn the type of metal alloyed with the Lerasium- alloy Lerasium with pewter, for example, and the burner will turn into a Pewterarm or improve their Allomantic pewter. However, turning someone into a Mistborn is a side effect of its usage. There's more to it. And I just read the Allomancy table on Lerasium and it says "Pure Lerasium transforms a person into an Allomancer or drastically improves their Allomantic powers. In alloy form, it produces various expanded physical and enhancement effects, including the creation of Mistings." (Link) That makes me wonder what those effects are, as turning into a Misting is simply a side effect of those alloys, apparently. I know nobody knows any of those effects at this time, but are there any educated guesses people are willing to share?
  6. Usually, I make posts about crazy hypothetical uses of a magic system (usually Hemalurgy), but every once in a while, it's nice to make a relatively simple one, like guessing the maximum destructive force of a duralumin Steelpush. In TLM we see that not Wax (Dumad) is able to casually toss transport trucks around at his enemies with a low level of Allomantic power and a single quick mouthful of metal flakes. What kind of destructive potential would an Allomancer with a stomach packed to the brim with pewter and steel with a pinch of duralumin be able to do destruction wise? What about a Lerasium Mistborn trying to do the same? What if The Lord Ruler were to do this? Actually, TLR could easily shrug off being run through, so he could just take a large pair of solid steel and pewter bars, stab himself, and burn those as extra fuel. What kind of destructive potential would we see then? Basically, what's the maximum destructive force of a Steelpush via the Metallic Arts?
  7. Greetings, fellow Rioters. If you burn zinc to influence others' emotions, this is the place for you to discuss tricks of the trade, highs, lows, etc. Remember it's bad form to use allomancy on fellow rioters here, so none of that unless both parties are fine with it. Let's try to get as many rioters here as possible. GjornHrathen
  8. When rereading The Sunlit Man I noticed somthing intersting. When a scadrian uses an allomantic push on Sigzil she appears to be using some sort of a metal device on her arm. This implies that she used this device to give herself allomancy simliar to the bands of mourning, so does this mean that devices that can grant allomancy are now commonplace on scadrial? And if so what are the implications for mistborn era 3 and 4?
  9. I found this quote last night and it changed the way I look at Allomantic pewter; (I removed the mild Warbreaker and SA spoilers inside) So, this means that a Pewterarm can control more about what their Allomancy does? I always thought of A-pewter being a more passive metal, where you could train to use the effects, but you couldn't control it as you do steel and iron. This also would explain some of the fundamental differences between the Blessing of Potency and Allomantic pewter; Potency really is just a static boost to your Spiritual Aspect's natural physical abilities, but because of that it's narrower in its scope. Allomantic pewter has more potential, including some sort of mind-over-matter. What else do you think A-pewter could be used for?
  10. Feruchemical Bendalloy can store water and nutrients inside a Metalmind. But what are the limits of this? Most importantly to this topic, since an Allomancer can sort of metabolize metal, could they store metals they swallowed in a Bendalloymind? If they could, it would be a way to drastically increase their Allomantic reserves whilst keeping them highly portable. It also might be a way to bypass Leeching to an extent, since only Metalminds being currently tapped can be Leeched- the Allomancer could just tap a Bendalloymind for a hit of metal after being Leeched and then stop tapping to prevent their Metalminds from being Leeched. You could also use duralumin (if they had a Hemalurgic spike providing its use) in bursts and replace your metal reserves in the blink of an eye, all without needing to hassle with vials or canteens. I now really, really like this idea.
  11. If a Bendalloy Misting can exclude specific objects and people from their bubble (as we see Wayne do), could a Cadmium Misting Savant exclude themselves from their own bubble? It probably wouldn't be quite as powerful as being a Slider, but it would be pretty close, especially since they already innately have the ability to make larger temporal bubbles than their counterparts.
  12. This is a sister poll to one I did recently on the pure metals. This time around, I wanna see just the alloys. Certainly easier than the pure metals, but I’m curious to see how it shakes out. And I’ve got a few more tricks in my back pocket. If you had to be a Metalborn of alloys, which would you choose and why?
  13. So at the end of The Lost Metal, with a duralumin spike, wax pushes off the top of a skyscraper and makes it to the ship miles away. It specifically says that the steel beams are bent backwards. This got the engineer in me thinking. How large are steel lines. Stress is equal to force over area and the size of the steel lines affects this greatly. A second question with this is: can a coinshot push off of multiple steel sources right next to each other in order to get a stronger push?
  14. Talked with my brother about the thread on safely burning Harmonium, including @Trusk'our's idea to Plate the outside with another allomantic metal. While Duralumin allows for massive bursts of power of other metals, instantly burning all available metal, Duralumin itself burns at a constant rate. Combine this with this WoB that Trusk'our found: Here's the idea we came up with for a Mistborn or Hemalurgist with access to A-Duralumin and other Allomantic powers, for this example we'll use Steel. You have a sizeable bead made of concentric layers of Steel sandwiched in between layers of Duralumin, and for consistency a rod of Duralumin that runs through all layers to the core of the bead. The idea is that as you burn Duralumin, the thin layer covering the Steel burns away giving you access to a Duralumin-enhanced Steelpush. This burns the Steel immediately reducing the bead to the next thin layer of Duralumin. Burn that thin layer of Duralumin away and you have another charge of Steel at your disposal. This would let you rapid fire charges of Duralumin-enhanced Allomancy. It would even let you alternate metals or burn two simultaneously. Here's a rudimentary cross-section: D:Duralumin S:Steel DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS ... Or D:Duralumin S:Steel P:Pewter B:Brass DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD SSSSSSSSDDPPPPPPPP SSSSSSSSDDPPPPPPPP SSSSSSSSDDPPPPPPPP DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD SSSSSSSSDDSSSSSSSS DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD BBBBBBBBDDBBBBBBB BBBBBBBBDDBBBBBBB DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD PPPPPPPPDDSSSSSSS PPPPPPPPDDSSSSSSS PPPPPPPPDDSSSSSSS ... Fly over with Pewter and Steel, land with Steel, blast the area with massive Soothing, go to town with unenhanced Pewter and Steel unless you decide to use Duralumin again. etc. Thoughts?
  15. So, I have been roleplaying a gold savant over in the Alleyverse forums (which if you like roleplaying and haven’t checked out, you totally should look at!), and I had to fudge some things. We have really only had two instances of A-gold in the books, and information on what exactly goes on is very conflicted (see the differences in the Ars Arcanum wording and the Coppermind wording). So, that got me thinking: how does A-gold work? Now, we have very little to go off of. But, let’s start with the basics. Gold is a temporal metal that shows you two alternate versions of yourself when burning it. Past that, it gets weird. These alternate selves don’t seem to be able to interact with you in any meaningful way, and don’t really exist. Now, you can sort of interact with them, as we saw with Vin reaching out to touch her gold shadow. Now, she also seemed to be controlling the shadows, in a way. Here’s a section from the book (chapter 27 for any of you keeping track): So there’s something weird there. The user also thinks through both thoughts, and intrinsically knows them. They can’t seem to communicate, but maybe they can see each other, given the whole touching thing that goes on in book one. It is very unclear. They also seem to no longer have their physical self anymore, as both of the instances seem to refer to splitting into two and being two people, not three. Do I have any idea how that would work if you are burning it for more that 15 seconds? Nope! But that’s what we have to work with Now that we sorta kinda get how the shadows manifest, let’s talk about the shadows themselves. In the two instances we see them, the shadows appear to be alternative present selves, like if you were to essence stamp yourself. Now, here’s where things get inconsistent. The Ars Arcanum seems to suggest that you see your, and I quote, “past selves or alternate present selves” which, given the wording, seems to imply that you can either see an alternate present self or an unaltered past self. But given that that would be really rusting weird, let’s just say you can access alternate selves. Whether or not they can be younger than you are is kind of unclear (I seem to be repeating myself quite a bit). So what of these alternate selves? Could they be anything? Theoretically, but with the stuff we have seen, they seem to be opposites of each other in some way, and seem to be very relevant to the moment. Vin saw a noble and a thief, Miles saw a vanisher and a lawman. Now, both of these people were very inexperienced with gold, so I’m sure you can stretch the capability of your shadows past just differences in currently relevant occupations. So, now that we’re sort of on the same page about what A-gold does, let’s unravel it a bit. Specifically, I will be looking at this from a lens of Intent, Identity, and Fortune, the three weirdest mechanics in the Cosmere. Starting with Intent. Could you be conscously aware of what shadows want to summon, or where they manifest positionally to you? Would you have the ability to move the shadows independently of yourself, or have three or one self (either just you physically present and seeing out of your own eyes or your two gold shadows and you) present? I would say with savanthood, anything is possible, but to what degree could a normal Augur that isn’t ashamed of their very existence pull that off? I don’t know. On to Identity. I think this is probably more relevant than Intent, as who you are affects what your shadows could be. If you are sure of who you are, the shadows would likely be less variable than if you feel that you are the way you are now due to pure happenstance. To take that a step further, let’s put F-Aluminum into the mix. What happens when an augur stores identity? Personally, I think it would increase the variability of the shadows. Maybe one of them wasn’t even born an Augur! Now what would happen if they have access to an unsealed identitymind? Well, then they could increase their identity. What would that do to the shadows? If storing increases variability, tapping would decrease variability. Eventually, maybe gold shadows wouldn’t even appear! The possibilities are interesting for sure. Now on to the last one: Fortune. Why do I bring this up? This is all about the past. Well, in a way, it’s about the future. The gold shadows seem to show people what they need to see, but what if you burn it for more than 15 seconds? What if you shadow up a fighter because you will be getting into a fight? This is certainly an interesting question. Personally, I think it is certainly plausible. Gold is really weird, and who chooses the shadows certainly isn’t the one burning the metal. Well, what are you folks thoughts? Is there more potential with being an Augur than just getting nausea on command? Could you manipulate this realmic power to your own desires?
  16. People have suggested that A-bronze could be used to help counter a Lightweaver's ability to hide, but what about Steelsight? Would, say, a Steel Inquisitor be unable to see a Lightweaving and therefore ignore it? Or, assuming that isn't possible, could they learn to have a sort of x-ray vision due to learning to ignore certain stimuli (more info on this topic here), therefore allowing them to automatically tell if a something is a Lightweaving or not? What are your thoughts on this matter?
  17. Mistborn normally don't have noticeable Resonances due to the large number of powers they have- such Resonances effectively get washed out of their system. But what if you non-lethally spiked a Mistborn of all but two or three of their powers? Would they then develop a Resonance between multiple Allomantic powers? Perhaps if they found a way to heal their Spiritweb (ahem, F-gold Hemalurgy) they could experiment and discover some new Resonances that wouldn't normally exist (the cost wouldn't be worth the benefit really, but hey, hypothetically I think that it'd work).
  18. I need to know if I'm missing something or if this just works. If someone were to be a Nicroburst Misting and Soulbearer Ferring would they not be able to gain infinite amounts of investiture? They could store some limited amount of investiture, eat the metal mind, and because of what we know regarding compounding, could end up with 10x the investiture they put in. Could they not then return the newly gained investiture into a new metal mind and repeat and therefore "farm" investiture. Furthermore does this not break the First Law of Investiture, "Investiture can not be created or destroyed. It follows it's own version of the laws of Thermodynamics.". And if it is not breaking this law would it just be taking more and more investiture from the Shards of Preservation and Ruin? What stops this person from taking all the investiture in the shard and effectively becoming the shard? I guess my question is do we know how exactly Nicrosil Compounders will work?
  19. This is a theory that has been brewing in my head for some time, concerning Steel Compounders. While extremely powerful, an effective limit is placed in the form of air resistance. Thus, they cannot tap too much speed, lest they literally burn up. While an interesting case study of Sanderson's Second Law of Magic, I have always found it to be frustrating. So, I started thinking of ways to circumvent this issue. This is no novelty. Many have already conceptualized combining the [Stormlight Archive Spoiler] with Steel Compounding, which would be an effective way of going about eliminating the issue. However, such inter-planetary interaction isn't likely to occur for some time. So I started thinking of ways to make Steel Compounding safer using only things available on Scadrial. This leads to my theory. Could a Steel Compounder take a brass medallion (or a brass spike) and begin storing heat? With the use of heat Feruchemy, all heat generated by the air resistance would be siphoned away, preventing any damage to the Compounder. With enough metalminds, no heat would linger long enough to pose any threat, allowing the Steelrunner to speed up. Of course, the faster the Compounder goes, the more heat will be generated. This may eventually prove too much for the limited nature of Feruchemical storage. However, the Steelrunner would not be forced to last long. Eventually, they should be able to accelerate enough to break the sound barrier, thus ceasing the accumulation of heat. This is how I think Steel Compounding can emerge even more powerful than before. What's worse, Hemalurgy isn't even necessary. Southern Scadrian medallions solve that problem quite beautifully. I do not know if this theory is sound, so feel free to comment below with any corrections or counterarguments. ~Longshot97
  20. There was a creative challenge that my friend told me and I wanted to share here (feel free to do it if you want to): Basically you are coming up with 2 (you can do more but best to go with an even number 2,4,6,8 etc...) new metals which are fully functioning for the metallic arts. Criteria is bullet pointed below: The metals and their alloys must exist in real life (no god metals) Metals can belong to any of the four quadrants (physical, mental/cognitive, temporal/hybrid or enhancement/spiritual) but both the pure metal and its alloy must belong to the same one. Same goes for external/internal. You cannot make up your own quadrants to categorize them in. The pure metal must be a "pull" metal and its alloy must be a "push" metal. The metals must have an allomantic, feruchemical and hemalurgic power which fit with their quadrants Their hemalurgic power cannot grant allomantic or feruchemical powers. i.e. must be a human attribute <optional> The metal has a kandra blessing with a name. i.e. Blessing of <insert name of blessing here> Come up with a misting and ferring name for each metal. For example, here is my own creation (hidden for those that don't really care and for length):
  21. Steelsight can potentially be used to let an Allomancer see into other rooms through the walls (Wax used this trick when pursuing the Marksman in SoS), but for individuals (such as Steel Inquisitors) that use it to fully outline the world around them they can only see as far as an eye could normally (Vin was able to temporarily blind a Steel Inquisitor with pewter dust to the face in TFE). But does it have to be that way? We've seen that Spook was able to ignore his eye bandage in order to see the world around him. Perhaps if a someone with Steelsight were very, very skilled (or a Savant) they could use a similar trick to have an x-ray like vision of the world around them.
  22. I was scouring the Arcanum for a completely unrelated other idea relating to Hemalurgy and A-bronze when I came across this: This would mean that it is in fact possible to give a very thin coating of a non-Allomantic metal over a bead of Harmonium (just enough to cover it and keep it from reacting to your body's moisture), then burn the Harmonium. So, maybe burning Harmonium doesn't have to be about Compounding Health after all.
  23. Greetings, people of the Shard! Some of you may not remember me; I haven't been active for a while, and back then I used a different name (long story). I've been quiet for the last couple years because I went back to school, and I've been focusing on my studies. But they were fun studies. I've been learning to make games. And the final project for one of my classes was a game jam. And the theme was just vague enough that I used it as an excuse to finally prototype a Mistborn game, built around Allomancy. I know a couple of people have already done something like this, but this is my take on it. https://jezrien.itch.io/magno-the-robot A few notes: Being a game jam project, this entire game was built in under 48 hours. As a result, it's a little rough. It should definitely be viewed as a prototype demo, not a real game. The physics of allomancy had to be simplified a little. You can't modulate the strength of your pushes and pulls. The magnitude of the force is always the same. When you push/pull on a metal object, it does not apply force to both the object and Magno. It just compares the object's mass with Magno's mass, and applies force to whichever is lighter. When a smaller metal object is pressed against the floor or a wall, it does not realistically 'acquire' the mass of the floor or wall. I.e. you cannot launch yourself into the air by standing on a small metal object. (But you can with large ones!) The game is only available for Windows at this time. Sorry. I might continue to iterate on this prototype. If I do, all of the issues listed here will eventually be dealt with. I hope you like it! 24. I was just wondering at the arcanum entry about electrum. Obviously seeing ones own future and being hit there or here changes what you do so it countered atium. Maybe it is a general anti-assassination power, with a few seconds use, it I find would be difficult to rely on unless you had the resources to burn all the time and who knows what happens when you get to an extent where you have an electrum savant, might it be minutes? Hmmm. We don't have much limits here. Atium was used more like what you see in the movie Next I feel, knowing what everyone is to do. But I feel even seeing what happens to you, it would be something like the movie Next anyway, because it had to do with him and it makes sense in my mind that way. But obviously it isn't that powerful, so I'm kinda wondering now... What are the limits of Electrum, do we even know from a q and a with Sanderson yet?
  25. I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the nature and synergy of different Invested Arts lately (mostly because I've been creating some of my own for the Combined Shard Names thread) and I'm a bit confused. A-Copper is rather cut and dry in what it does. It blocks Allomantic Pulses, and it makes the Smoker immune to Emotional Allomancy. But when you consider it, what is is doing to cause those effects? It also blocks Life sense, can presumably block a Singer from accessing the Rhythms, and can block your thoughts from detection (presumably). How does that work? I'm having trouble following what exactly it's doing, Realmatically. Thoughts?
