  1. I was reading this theory Yata opened up a little while ago when I had an interesting thought. Halfway through voicing this thought as a reply to the thread, I realized that it was sort of a tangent from his discussion. So here we are at an entirely new theory. Where do the metallic arts come from? Sanderson has said that the ability to use metallic arts is part of the physical DNA of the inhabitants of Scadrial (which explains why it is hereditary). We know that magic systems spring up sort of as a natural result of shards and planets interacting... But Ruin and Preservation created Scadrial, so it is hard to say how much of the three metallic arts were intentional and how much was natural. Let us consider how god metals work. Right now, we know of three: Atium, god metal of Ruin. Lerasium, god metal of Preservation. Trellium, god metal of Trell. Atium follows the standard rules for any metal. It can be burned in allomancy by either a mistborn or an atium misting. Lerasium, however, can be burned in allomancy by anyone at all. Why can anyone burn this metal in particular? Maybe this is because lerasium is the metal of preservation and allomancy is the magic of preservation... What about mistings though? Is it possible for someone to be a lerasium misting, if anyone can burn it already? Maybe the genetic trait for being a lerasium misting is actually what makes people mistborn, since it likely results in a strong connection to lerasium? And what of trellium? Who can burn trellium? Presumably, a mistborn can burn trellium, since it looks like a mistborn can burn any metal (even non-allomantic metals, although it would probably kill them). Would there be trellium mistings though? Assuming lerasium is special in that anyone can burn it, trellium is probably something like atium, which means there would be trellium mistings. And yet, where would the trellium mistings come from? Surely there weren't always trellium mistings. For most of Scadrial's history, trellium didn't exist. Why would the human population on Scadrial possess the latent ability to burn a metal that did not yet exist, and may never exist? If the three metallic arts are intentional, that means Ruin and Preservation deliberately embedded the genetic potential for being a misting into the humans on Scadrial. This would imply that without shardic intervention, Scadrians would never produce a trellium misting. It wouldn't be in their genetics. But if the metallic arts happened more naturally, that means the genetic potential for being a misting could be more fluid. This would imply that as Trell invested in Scadrial, this may actually have created a trellium misting trait within the human population. Suddenly people would start naturally being born as trellium mistings in reaction to the fact that trell invested in Scadrial. These are some rather interesting questions I think. I personally believe that lerasium mistings are indeed actually mistborn, and that the Scadrian population will indeed start manifesting trellium mistings naturally. But this is more about the questions themselves than about my opinions on them. I open up the discussion to you all.
  2. So, from what I have previously read here in regards to Sixth of the Dusk, it seems like The Ones Above are thought to be from Scadrial, correct? It does make some sense because they have similar technology to what we have seen with Southerners and they are on the only planet that we know is approaching interstellar travel at the moment. I do wonder if there are any WoBs or other information that I haven't seen to confirm this though. Another question I have is this: In what way do the 'machines' work using what we know of the metallic arts? I mean maybe bronze could be used to sense more than just Allomancy and that could probably work for detecting Aviar, I suppose (It wasn't actually described how the smaller machine "shows things" to the user). The translation function confuses me though. In Bands we saw translation using connection worked in the opposite method. Connection attaches a person to the attributes of the place they are in. It is only really useful for visitors. How could Vathi use it to read a language from another world? Any thoughts?

    Savant drawbacks

Right, so most of us know that if an allomancer flares a metal for large periods of time they can become a savant. Now when savants were first mentioned it was described as a dangerous ting, because it has drawbacks. The best/only example is Spook. While burning tin his senses were heightened to a ridiculous degree as seen in the third book. However when he stopped burning tin his senses became stunted and almost useless. With the review out of the way I was wondering...What is the drawback for steel? I just learned that Wax is a steel savant, witch makes sense it explains his steel bubble thing, but what is the downside. If he isn't burning steel the side affect is what he becomes worse at sensing and pushing on metals? For pewter the drawback is the savant becomes weaker and much more prone to exhaustion (at least that's my assumption) it is the opposite affect of when burning pewter. So what about steel, or bronze or any of the other metals really. What is stopping all the other types of mistings from savanting themselves. If there is no downside there is no reason why anyone else can get stronger. So the question is two things really: What is the drawback of being a Steel/Bronze/copper/etc, savant? + Why don't we see alot more savants running around?
  4. Like the title says. Does the Emotional Allomancy work on Animals (or other species) ? I lnow it works on Hemalurgic Costruct but they are beings Human-based or Mistwrath-based (and in the end the Mistwraths are Human based).
  5. I just find this cool animation inspired by the Vin's training to explore her Mistborn's power. https://www.behance.net/gallery/41884613/Mistborn-Luthadel-Wall-Animatic I think it's an amazing work and of course I am not the author (I maybe may drawn a static picture of a bead of metal)
  6. Hey guys here is a song that I wrote! I am working on composing soundtracks for various cosmere stories, and this is an example of what I like to do with music. I'll post various soundtrack ideas as I complete them, right now I am working on a couple songs for both Stormlight Archive and for Mistborn, although hopefully I can also get some Elantris and Warbreaker in there too. https://soundcloud.com/alex-watson-12/the-lightning-boy Also here is the Wav file if you are interested. Feedback please!! The_Lightning_Boy.wav
  7. So, basically, I was just wondering if there is a definite answer to this question; How does Steel Feruchemy work? The title really says it all. I've looked around, but have not found a definite answer, and was wondering if anyone knew. If not, I have an idea, but I'd like to make sure that there is not another, correct answer, before I make a fool of myself in the Cosmere Theories section.
  8. I suspect that Sigzil might be a Allomancer. In WoR ch.71, Teft along with Sigzil was doing nightwatch and waiting for Kaladin to make a comeback from chasms. And Teft kept talking about Envisagers and his past. But it's... kinda strange. Quote two paragraphs here: Sigzil seems to let Teft tell a lot unknowingly... is it just my overthinking, or he's actually burning Brass to let Teft speak? He was asking Teft something in the beginning of the chapter, so he does have a motivation---but that's not the topic here. We all know his mentor was Hoid. What if Hoid, accidentally or deliberately, made him become a Allomancer? Extra: We also recognized Nahel Bond. But have anyone thought about Who the hell Nahel is? What do you think?
  9. Wax used the Bands of Mourning tapping amazing amount of Investiture from its reserves, at the point he began to see the true structure of the Cosmere. We know that someone become a Sliver after keep an huge amount of power, the power expands his soul and when the power was there no more, it leave some residual. We know also that a Lerasium Mistborn is near of the amount of power needed to become a Sliver (from a WoB). Therefore, may Wax and Marasi have becomed Slivers ? Any idea ?
  10. Hello everyone here is what I'm going to ask you: pick 2 powers from magic systems in the cosmere, tell me which ones they are and explain why you picked them up.( it can be two powers from a same magic system( feruchemy pewter and gold for example) For me it's allomantic steel and feruchemic iron because in battle you can just fly around if you're a powerful enough allomancer and if someone tries to shoot you, you can change your weight and you can make yourself lighter to fall more slowly so that the shoot misses because you weren't where your opponent thought you were.
  11. How does the Third Heightening compare to allomantic tin? What, if any, overlap is there in the powers? Would a tineye have been able to notice the subtly different colors of the trap door in Mercystar's palace? Is there any real benefit to being a tineye at the Third Heightening? Obviously it's an improvement over just the Third Heightening, since you could also see things farther away, but does tin already give you the ability to distinguish shades the way BioChroma does? One possible advantage; while a tineye might be able to tell that the two reds in front of him aren't identical, he might not automatically know which is the "pure" hue the way an Awakener could. Thoughts?
  12. So I don't know if anyone has discussed this possibility before, but the Bands of Mourning seem like they could be replicated relatively easily for an artifact of that magnitude of power Step 1. Create an exact physical copy of the bands Step 2. Compound Nicrosil and put the extra investiture into the new copy Step 3. Profit??
  13. I've been re-reading Mistborn and something hit me as I'm thinking about these powers preparing to hit the cosmere-scale of the story. Does a copper cloud hide all active use of Investiture AND does Brass enable a Seeker to detect any use of Investiture? These skills seem like they'd be really helpful for spying knowing that Scadrial is going to eventually explore other worlds in the cosmere, I'm wondering if we know anything about these powers yet.
  14. So, what kind of things involving Metalborn would you want to see? (or even without Metalborn, but set on Scadrial) Any kind of scene, be it action (fight, chase, novel application of powers) or non-action (passing a law enforcing Metalborn registration, or idea for a new transport system), anything. I've seen people comment that there should be a Steelpushing fight on skyscraper construction site. I personally want to see two Coinshots/Lurchers going at it without any metal on them... except the fact that somebody detonated a metal dust grenade in the room (like that silver dust bomb from 1:58) so the room is filled to the roof with metal dust. I think that it would be quite awesome to see more of using metal dust. Also, molten metal. As for the another idea, BoM spoilers

  16. I noticed there wasn't a thread on Mistborn Era 2 Meyers Briggs types so I figured I start one. These are my guesses Waxillium Ladrian- INFP Wayne- ENFP or ESFP Steris Harms- ISTJ Marasi Colms- I'm not really sure for her. She is rather intellectual but fascinated by morals of others. Marasi has been known to make rash decisions in times of danger. So INxP Alikk Neverfar- I don't think we've seen enough of him to type him thoroughly but I feel like he's an xNFJ. Any Ideas?
  17. Hi guys! I have been thinking a lot about how Allomancy and Feruchemy are genetic, and how the blood lines are being diffused, and realized that unless something big happens about it, it will probably almost die out. There are already no new Mistborn or full Feruchemists being born after just 300 years, and even though Brandon Sanderson has said that there will be a Mistborn assassin in the modern day trilogy, I don't see how even weak Mistings or Ferrings could still exist in the sci-fi trilogy unless Harmony gives some sort of power boost to mankind. There were no Mistborn, and only weak Mistings, before the Lord Ruler gave people the Lerasium, and Feruchemists only were around because the Terris people were so secluded and only ever reproduced with other Terris people. So I think that either Harmony gives someone Lerasium, or does something else about the Allomantic and Feruchemical potential in people. Unless he does, the sci-fi trilogy will be really boring.
  18. So, as we all know, being a Sanderfan can lead to certain...conditions. I have decided to compile the ones I know of, if I miss a significant one please feel free to post below!! TBTBB (To Broke To Buy Books) CTP (Compulsive Theory Posting) TMDCD (To Many Dead Character Depression) BNSWB3 (Broken Nose Started With Book 3) (exclusive to Alcatraz Fans) DD (Delusional Daydreaming) AO17SS (Always ON 17th Shard Starvation) There you have it!! There is only one positive side effect HAPPINESS
  19. It recently struck me: More detailed analysis: Is there any WoB on such things? What are your thoughts?
  20. A thing that bothered my mind for a long, long time. How did people of Shardworlds discover the magic in the first place? You see, some are far easier to discover than others. Here's a list. Sel AonDor: Medium before Elantris was built and easy after that. It only requires to wave your hand in the air. At some point someone definitely tried to draw the shape of the country and it went from there. ChayShan: specifical movement. Easy. DakHor: no idea how they discovered it in the first place. Scadrial things get a little complicated when you start to consider the alloys, but there always is some pure base metal around. Feruchemy: easiest of the three - Feruchemist feel a natural draw when they touch the metal, nothing complicated, really. Allomancy: the most unintuitive of all the Shardworlds. How on the tenth name of Damnation would somebody get the idea to swallow metals???? Sure, after Rashek Ascended he easily kicked it off, but we have WoBs on Allomancers being born before. How did they discover their powers? We have a WoB on Alendi being a Seeker. Hemalurgy: even more unintuitive than Allomancy. Not only would somebody had to have the idea to stab somebody and after that get the idea to stab himself with it, but also bindpoints come in play. No idea how it was discovered in the pre-Rashek times (there is a WoB that it was used). Nalthis Breath is noticeable and when somebody said the right words things happened to it. And after that it's just research. Roshar Spren bond people naturally and Stormlight can be inhaled reflexively (as seen many times before Kaladin knew what he was doing) and Surges can be used intuitively. On the easy end of the scope. Discuss.
  21. So as I've been listening through the books again and reading through the forums, I've been trying to figure out something. If magic comes from the Shards, then which Shard made Allomancy? According to Sazed, Allomancy is of Preservation, but look at most of what it does. Most of the applications are short term and often destructive. That sounds more like Ruins pervue than Preservation, yet the mists (which is of preservation) react to Allomancers. My theory is thus: Because Ruin and Preservation couldn't do much of anything without the other having a hand in it (read: the constant struggle for either to get anything done at the end of HoA) then all three Metallic Arts carry both within them, but favor one or the other. Feruchemy is the art of preserving, hands down. You store away your attributes for later use, either in a time of need or to supercharge what is already there. It's long term and deliberate, it's of Preservation. But, there is enough of Ruin in it for copperminds to suffer the same corruption as non-metallic recordings. Allomancy is the flip. It's short term, and often only for immediate or near to immediate use. It relies on metal as a catlyst to burn the investiture inside the person. It is closer to Ruin, which is easiest to see in the power Atium gives. Quick bursts of flashing insight in to the immediate world around them, making them better to kill. While we don't know if that notion of Atium helps to kill is a product of Atium itself or the world it lives in, Elends final chapters make the thought ambiguous. Allomancy favors Ruin, but is birthed by Preservation. That Lerasium burns for everyone says something. Hemalurgy is the most directly built by Ruin. It is destructive in nature. However, I find it ironic that it does, albeit not perfectly, preserves the power it stored. It's leaking, but it's holding in the power. This is me just trying to get my thoughts out and seeing how other people see it. I'm not sure if it's been discussed before.
  22. Hey guys. I thought of a possible method of compounding allomancy. You can go over the basics. Allomancy. You eat the metal you can use then burn it. Different metals burn at different rates. You can cause the metal to burn faster to get more power. However, there is an upper limit to how much power you can get. Feruchemy. You store up attributes like speed, weight, or memories in a piece of metal that can store it. You have to spend an amount of time storing in order to use an equal amount of what you stored for an equal amount of time. If you have enough weight, you could become as heavy as the Earth for a few instants. There is no upper limit, but it is an in=out system. Compounding. If you have both Allomancy and Feruchemy, you can compound. We only know how to compound Feruchemy, but it can give some insight on how to compound Allomancy. Ferucompounding works by storing an attribute, then burning the attribute stored inside to increase the amount of attribute that is available to you, and then storing that attribute in a different metalmind. So my theory on Allocompounding works like Ferucompounding. You take the metal, burn it, then store the power released into a metalmind. This may seem a bit useless, but remember, Feruchemy(which you are now doing) has no upper limit. So you just use the power you just stored up, and use it at twice as powerful that you can do in order to compound Allomancy. Thought? Opinions? Ideas? Edit: I think there is a WoB around that says that you could store allomantic pewter in a pewtermind, but the amount and/or effort involved makes it easier to ferucompound pewter. On a different note, if this method works, you could allocompound and ferucompound at the same time.
  23. What would happen if you were a twinborn with pewter? I know that when you use the same metal for both feruchemy and allomancy you get a drastic increase in what that metal is used for so with pewter you would obviously get a massive increase in strength, but would your muscles get so big that you would have problems moving? That happened in Dragon Ball Z when some of the characters were trying to get to the next level of Super Saiyan during the cell saga. Just curious if anyone had any ideas.
  24. It seems that all people must undergo some form of stress to gain their powers. Mistborn need to "snap" and experience some form of traumatizing physical or emotional stress to gain allomancy. The Elantrians need to be taken by the Shaod. The Returned somehow gain one incredibly powerful breathe when they return, although anyone can get enough breathe to become powerful. The parshendi must transform in the middle of a highstorm, and surgebinders must form the nahel bond with a spren. Kaladin, at least, was physically, emotionally, and mentally stressed before he figured out the oaths. Thoughts?
  25. So, what if you were to burn duralumin and then aluminum? Could it potentially wipe your very ability to use Allomancy? What about duralumin and chromium? Instead of wiping someone's metal reserves, you destroy their Allomantic ability completely. Not sure if it would even work that way, (and who would be stupid enough to try duralumin and aluminum anyway) but... thoughts?
