  1. Hello After looking around the Internet and not finding the Alethi Standard Phenome Script in font form, I decided to create a quick one myself. I would love to hear what you think, and if there already exists one that I couldn't find, please tell me! I used Nazh's notes and the description in the coppermind to create this
  2. Am re-reading Oathbringer and can't help but want a Total war game based off the Kholin conquest of Alethkar. They'd need to add new mechanics for the regeneration of shardplate, and for equipment and customization for more than just the army's general so you could have multiple shards in a single army (and ideally make the unit pathing less stupid but let's be honest that's just how Total War works). Extreme High Storm attrition would make places other than cities important to hold, and of course, capturing enemy shards and enhancing your own shardbearers would be a central mechanic. The Thrill would prevent armies from breaking when they fight near it and it would move to battles with high casualties, berserking units that are winning. Potential problems: The Blackthorn in full shards at max rank and accompanied by the Thrill could singlehandedly destroy the standard 2000 men most total war games allow armies to max out at. solution? smaller maps, but larger max army sizes with a 'reserve' mechanic that allows troops to be held back off the map until sent in. It would also be the first total war game to have a reasonable explanation for why your armies don't need supply lines because of soulcasters
  3. Are certain names and words in Stormlight Archive of Indian origin, eg. Navani, Narak, Shallan, Amaram?
  4. Hello! I've been remaking some of the maps from the Stormlight Archive books the past few weeks and posting them to Reddit. People there seemed to like them, and suggested that I also post them here so that others can see them as well. So here I am, doing just that. So far I've adapted 3 of the maps in the series into my own style. The main Roshar map, a map of Shadesmar, and most recently a map of Alethkar. All 3 of them were a lot of fun to make and turned out really well. I've received some interest in people buying prints of these, but I'm unsure how to go about requesting permission to print these out and sell them, and don't want to step on any toes. If anyone knows a bit about how I'd contact Brandon or Dragonsteel Entertainment to request permission, I'd really appreciate it. And while it's a long shot, I'd also love to ask them what they think about including one of these in their 10th Anniversary editions of Way of Kings or Words of Radiance. (I think the images might have been compressed when I uploaded them, so here they are in my Google Drive, uncompressed: Alethkar: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1plOlOIFv8d-B0kM9CrJO_Vs7cimGMhEZ/view?usp=drivesdk Roshar: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10RAxGyBKuFX_xiagJ6YIDXDPofrL4N-I/view?usp=drivesdk Shadesmar: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Tx_WcUFkjveL0B3QXfhQtHF18mU3HhgD/view?usp=drivesdk
  5. I got the impression (unless I read it somewhere and forgot) that Elhokar wanted to lead the raid on Kholinar because he expected to die, but he wanted to bring Kaladin because he thought he would make sure it would succeed. Maybe he intended to go out with honor or glory, or maybe he just wanted to get himself out of the way. Or maybe he really did want to be responsible for freeing his city, and wanted to have a hand in it. Thoughts?
  6. I've searched through the forum and haven't found any threads specifically discussing this, which is a little surprising. If such a thread exists and I missed it, I apologize. Now on to the topic. What's the deal with Aesudan Kholin, Elhokar's wife? In the WOR prologue, we learn that Jasnah was contemplating having Aesudan assassinated by Liss before changing her mind and having her merely spy on the queen for the time being. But why? what's so special about Aesudan? Who is she? What sort of threat does Jasnah believe her to pose to her family that she is willing to go as far as have her assassinated? Sure Aesudan, as shown in Lhan's interlude chapter in WOR, is definitely not a really good person nor a good ruler, throwing lavish parties and being excessive, wasteful and out of touch with and uncaring of the common people. All of this make her a terrible person but it's not enough to justify Jasnah's actions against her. Like Jasnah had to have been convinced that Aesudan was serious bad news for her family to even contemplate going as far as an assassination attempt. Not to mention Jasnah had this planned while Gavilar was still alive, so Aesudan wasn;t even queen then. There's also the fact that Bordin, said to be one of Dalinar's most trusted servants, had been left behind in Alethkar to spy on Aesudan, or at least this is what Mraize claims. If that's true then does that mean Dalinar shares at least some of Jasnah's suspicions regarding the queen? I highly doubt he knows about Liss and Jasnah's almost assassination attempt against Aesudan since I'm sure he wouldn't have approved of it. But both Dalinar and Jasnah must now something about Aesudan that warrants having people spy on her. And how do the Ghostbloods know about, for that matter how much do they know? Is Aesudan somehow connected to them? Or maybe she's associated with the Diagram or some other secret organization since Roshar seems to be crawling with them. I think it's pretty obvious that there's more to her but what? There's something else mentioned in the Lhan interlued that might also be relevant somehow: Why is that? What has she done or things she's done that led her to believe the Almight might be displeased with her? I don't have any concrete theories about this yet myself, gotta do a little more investigation, dig a little deeper, look for more hints and foreshadowings and things like that if there are any in the relevant chapters before forming one. But I figured I start this discussion here to see what you guys think and if any of you have any theories/ speculations of your own or know of any WOBs regarding this because this is something that has been on my mind since I finished WOR.

VORIN HAVAH EXPLAINED! (Yay for Syl in havah!) FIRST STEP During Mr. Inkthinker (Ben)’s AMA in 2016, I asked him about how Vorin havah actually looks like and where Brandon’s inspiration came from. He’s really a super nice guy and here’s his detailed answer: (Example art by Michael Whelan) SECOND STEP New info about the replaceable hem! Here is what I got from Tumblr user polk1986: THIRD STEP This time we have a Ben original! The official havah design! Hooray! I also asked Ben about specifics of the high collar: So... Based on all the aforementioned resources, I rendered something new this year: (My new take on Shallan) (Young!Navani) OLD STUFF My old havah design (Ver. 1.0): Inspiration: Traditional costumes from China (Qipao / Cheongsam), Vietnam (Ao Dai), India (Sari), Pakistan (Shalwar Kameez) and Central Asia
  8. At the moment i have just finished my second reread of WoK and one line started me thinking, i do not have the exact quote but it is a quote by dalinar in the first chapter after interlude two. To paraphrase it says that if there were a war between alethkar and vedenar, it would be so big and destructive, it would probably out shine the higherachy war where the ardentia tried to take control. To me this seems like overshadowing as it would cause lots of drama, and would serve odium. I have to go so i cant add more, but what do you guys think
  9. This is just a theory. It's probably too simple to be the whole story. But it makes sense, and I think it could be useful for (among other things) identifying Alethi characters in foreign lands, and creating Alethi OCs for fanfiction. In Writing Excuses, Brandon once mentioned a linguistic paradigm for "classical" Alethi names. He didn't describe it in detail, but he said it was invented to explain 'Dalinar,' which didn't really fit with the Vorin naming convention. He also said that 'Kaladin,' which he came up with by altering 'paladin,' conveniently fit this new classical paradigm. He also said this, in a 2014 interview: But there's a much simpler pattern in these names. And here it is: A simple alternation of Consonants (C) and vowels (V). (C) V C V C V C The initial consonant is in brackets because it's optional. It can be dropped, so names begin with a vowel. But the rest of the sequence doesn't change. No double vowels or double consonants. (Digraphs, like Th and Sh, count as one letter because they represent a single phoneme.) This holds true for the following Alethi names. Dalinar Adolin Renarin Gavilar Elhokar (assuming Lh is a digraph, the Alethi version of a double-L in English) Kaladin Meridas Amaram (coincidentally also a proper Vorin name) Aladar Arafik Avarak Avaran Alabet Lamaril Jakamav Kalishor Isasik Salinor Talanor Thanadal Tinalar Helaran (not Alethi, but close) Notice that all of these are men. This paradigm is only used for male names. As far as I can tell, all Alethi men have either Vorin names, or names in this pattern. (Vorin meaning palindromic, with one letter added, subtracted, or changed.) The only complication is Restares, whose name is neither Vorin nor classical. It violates my classical pattern because of the "ST" in the middle. But since Restares hasn't been confirmed as an Alethi, this may not be a problem. I'm wondering if anyone can see any additional patterns or rules that govern this system. Just for fun, I will now list some names from other Cosmere works that conveniently match this pattern. Galladon. Aredel. Luthadel. Aledin. Aradan (Yomen). Bevidon. Bavadin! Devanex. Dukaler. Galivan. Goradel. Heberen. Ishathon. Caberel. Nikolin. Arelon. Opelon. Duladel. Seraven. Enelan. And now some names from outside the Cosmere, to illustrate the general fantasy-friendly vibe of this paradigm: Saruman. Denethor. Boromir. Faramir. Azeroth. Suramar. Dalaran. Selidor. Eragon. (Po) Dameron. Caladan. Muradin. Mogenar. Telamon. Galadan. Malekith. Malacath. Akatosh. Zenithar. Kynareth. Erikur. (Obviously it also fits many not-so-fantastical names, like Cameron and Oliver. But let's leave reality out of this. Although Pokemon also fits.)
  10. Full pic here: More Alethi Fashion Hesina and Lirin, Laral and Roshone, Inkima and Jakamav And bonus picture: Kaladin, Adolin, Shallan and The Stick at the beach.
  11. I made a theme song for the Kholin family: Kholin Alight! Shattered Plains Here it is: https://soundcloud.com/ostrichofevil/kholin-alight This is the main theme. It is not done! I eventually will write themes for Dalinar (maybe with some Kaladin), Adolin, Renarin, and Jasnah (maybe with some Shallan). EDIT - This project is now called Shattered Plains
  12. It seems fascinating to consider what will happen politically in Alethkar and Urithiru after the events of WoR. In fact, the developments in Sadeas' highprincedom alone will be amazing. In the wake of Sadeas's death, I imagine people will think twice about opposing Dalinar. Whether Adolin's actions are discovered or not, Dalinar and Elhokar are likely to be leading a unified Alethi contingent of highprinces. Aladar is now working with Dalinar. Ruthar is largely de-Sharded. Sadeas is dead. Amaram may be tried for murder and killed, but I doubt it will go smoothly. Can he make a bid for Sadeas' province in the wake of Sadeas' death? Kaladin is likely to be a hero in Sadeas' home province very soon. While I doubt he wants to be a highprince, I could imagine him taking the position temporarily to protect people from the likes of Amaram. This is after the end of nations. People will just be struggling to survive the Voidbringers and the Everstorm. Nahn, dahn, lighteyes, darkeyes, Alethi, Veden and Azish may all cease to matter. Presumably Kaladin organizes the defenses of Hearthstone and then moves to the capital with a plan to protect people. Unless Jasnah shows up, he will be the de facto leadership of Alethkar until the Oathgate is opened. Kaladin is no longer taking orders from Dalinar. While he obviously respects Dalinar, he will do what he thinks is right. He doesn't seem to have any interest in organizing the activities of the other Radiants either. If Shallan tells Kaladin about the phonetic glyph trick that Amaram uses and Navani gives him half of one of those fabrial pens, Kaladin could maintain communications with Urithiru. He could also use scribes and other pens that have their mates in Urithiru, but it might be awkward to set up. I guess Dalinar and Shallan will be deciding what is done by the people at Urithiru. Their goals will presumably be to find other proto-Radiants, unlock the Oathgates and organize defenses against the Voidbringers. What do people think?
