  1. So, my thoughts have been going in weird circles lately, and I just thought of something. Humans can, theoretically, bond with Lesser Spren in what's not quite a Nahel Bond, but something that would still produce some effect, likely something that bends how physics applies to the subject, making them extremely light, or buoyant, or make them immune to air resistance, that sort of thing. However, I realized that in cases where we see that happen, i.e the Greatshells or Singers, they all have Gemhearts. I began to wonder how a Human could bond a Lesser Spren without one, and how they could improvise the equivalent of a Gemheart to do so. I eventually realized that some animals like Skyeels may not have Gemhearts but can still bond with Spren, so the Gemheart may not be necessary. However, I then remembered this: Roseite Aetherbound, like Prasanva, have a chunk of crystal embedded in their bodies, which could act like a Gemheart. So, a couple of questions here: Can Roseite, as a crystal, hold Light or a Spren inside? If it can, would a Roseite Aether Bud count as a Gemheart? Like, if a Singer saw it, would they get distressed thinking your Gemheart formed in your hand like a genetic defect? If you can infuse the Roseite bud with a Spren, would trapping one inside act like a bond, and could you then use it to do things like achieve weightlessness, or change forms like a Singer?
  2. It occurred to me that the Aethers have some parallels in the greater Spren of Roshar, and are equal in number. Bearing that in mind, I wanted to attempt to postulate what the six unknown Aethers might be. I'm also including the Rosharan Essences in spite of there only being ten. I would guess that their list is merely incomplete due to the significance of ten in their mythology. Known Aethers and their possible Spren equivalents as well as the Essence I assume they are associated with: - Zephyr Aether, Zephyr Essence: This seems pretty obviously the Stormfather. - Verdant Aether, Pulp Essence: Ditto the Nightwatcher. - Roseite Aether, Lucentia(Crystal) Essence: This one strikes me as the Sibling because of the building things angle. - Crimson Aether, Blood Essence: The closest thing to a connection I can think of is Nergaoul but that is literally just because of the color red. Stabbing things seems very on theme though. - Sunlight Aether, Spark Essence: - Midnight Aether, Tallow(Oil) Essence: Re-Shephir. Possible other Aethers based on the remaining Unmade and Essences: - Ashertmarn, Sinew Essence: Some sort of flesh based Aether, possibly with regenerative qualities. - Chemoarish, Talus Essence: Stone based Aether, though this seems extremely similar to Roseite. Maybe instead of building things it breaks them down. She is called the Dustmother. - Dai-Gonarthis, unkown: - Moelach, unkown: - Sja-Anat, unknown: - Yelig-Nar, Vapor(Smoke) Essence: - Bo-ado-Mishram, unknown: -Unknown, Foil(Metal) Essence: I'm looking for input here so any suggestions are appreciated. Any thoughts on the two missing essences would also be welcome. Thanks in advance.
  3. We know that Brandon has wanted the Aethers to be important for a long time. We see that the Shades on Threnody are vulnerable to silver which kills Aethers. They also have a significant physical resemblance to the Midnight Aether and Midnight Essence. My theory is that the Evil on Threnody is the Midnight Aether and that the Shades are manifestations of it.
  4. Noticed in the OB interlude involving Mem and Mraize that Mraize asks Mem if he got the aether out of his garments. Makes me have a little fun theorizing that Mraize might’ve visited Scadrial and interacted with Twinsoul, thereby getting the aether stain. Just a fun thought.
  5. I noticed some similarity between the two magic systems. Users of the powers risk dehydration and both are reliant on a microorganism that seemingly metabolizes Investiture. I wonder if this is just a coincident or if there is a closer connection between the two. I've also had pointed out to me that the clothing that TwinSouls wears is rather similar to what the Diem wear but I attribute that more to the cultures they are based on having a general similar aesthetic rather than something in universe.
  6. Hi there! I have only read Elantris (and Sel stories) and Warbreaker, and I'm about to get into Scadrial. But, as it is, I have read as well the first 5 chapters Brando gave us of the Secret Project 1, and it mentions aethers... What do you guys think? I would love to know a bit more, and if it strictly isn't spoiler... Could I read Aether of Night (knowing it isn't canon) without spoiling any other cosmere content that is canon? Thank you so much!! Also, PD: I know since I read it somewhere that aethers are mentioned in Oathbringer, but know no more than that.
  7. So recently Brando Sando has given increased attention to the Aethers, and as we rapidly apporach the Space age of the Cosmere they are going to become ever more relevant so what Aethers will make the cut, and which will not. Also Aether of Night spoiler warning in case that wasn't clear. So in Aether of Night there were 6 Aethers Verdant Amberite Corprite Beastarian Illumous Night However not all Aethers made the cut I think the one most likely to get cut is Beastarian, as it never really fit with the others, Night and Illumous are also suspect as Brandon seems to be leaning towards them not being from a Shard. However some Aethers are arguably near Hoid's level of power even if not quite there So I think those two are safe, even if they might not appear in their current form. I'm pretty confident in Amberite and Corprite being safe, especially as spacecraft become important. So we have 5 Aethers, but Brandon has said we can excpect to see 12 We also know that Aethers have reached multiple worlds, So I think it's safe to conclude that at least one of them grants the ability to cross realmatic barriers, though whether this will be included in Illumous and Night I can't say. Additionally We can be fairly certain that they will keep their paired opposites dinamic as Khriss thinks that the discovery of Anti-investiture to be of great importance. Keeping track of the seas and their colors
  8. Well, there it is and I get why he said that world building was demanding. Can you have twelve moons around a planet? The short answer is only for some time. It requires a repulsive force among the moons to be stable. Orbital mechanics So the question that opens up to me is simple. Are the moons the Aethers?
  9. So, the Aethers produce spores. Can we assume that their ultimate goal in that regard is reproduction? I would think so, but it is not absolutely clear. Given by the description they could also be an inapt form of attack or a likewise not very successful attempt at communication. Nor do these possibilities rule out each other. Does this tell us anything about their life cycle? So far it looks like: moon -> spore -> vine, but there it ends. Are human bodies just the wrong host or culture medium for the spores? (Aether of Night) (Threnody) Is the witch who was mentioned the first one to bond an Aether?
  10. How much did you like aether because I'm loving it so far it's a very good book of course compared to Brandon's normal work its not that good but compared to most novels it's pretty good
  11. This was originally written by me to post in the Discord because someone asked, so it's pretty hastily written, though I have gone and tweaked a few things people pointed out as wrong. Disclaimer aside, here's what I remember of Aether's magic. Full spoilers ahead. --- Magic revolves around "Aethers", things that you can bond, and give power. Amberite is a gem embedded in the palm, and I think Verdant was a vine around the wrist. We don't see what the others look like. I don't think Aethers are sapient, although I believe it was hinted they do have minds of a sort. There are 4 main types: Ferrous, Bestarin, Verdant, and Amberite, and two "god" Aethers, Night and Illuminous. --- Ferrous allows a user to become a machine. Permanently. Really sounds like they get a rough deal, to be honest with you. There may be more to it, we unfortunately get little information on it in the story. Bestarin allows its user to graft animal parts on. I think some have claws, for example. They can also heal by grafting on animal skin. Verdant allows the user to essentially control and grow vines from the Verdant on their wrist. They can use it to climb things, to shoot balls of vine that wrap people, etc. The vines it makes are also edible and make up a large portion of the diet of a lot of people. Amberite allows growing "amberite" crystal from the one embedded in the palm. It's very tough, and can be used to grow armor around you, a sword extending from your palm, trap people, etc. Note that someone can be strong or weak with an Aether. For example, the main character has Amberite, but incredibly weak. He can barely grow a sword, and can't grow armor. Some of this is due to the strength of the "bud" you're bonded with, but some people just plain aren't powerful. --- Now, the God Aethers. Night allows teleporting yourself, your clothing, and anything you're holding (this includes people: if you hug someone you'll take them with you). Illuminous allows teleporting others but NOT yourself. And then it gets weird. You see, the god Aethers are actually part of the Shardpool, and some weird things can be done. For example, someone bonded to Night can essentially project themselves to an avatar made from the liquid in the Shardpool (similar to Midnight Essence). It can also be controlled into pretty much any shape. I expect this to be removed, because it's wayyy too OP. For whatever reason, only Night seems to do that, however. Illuminous was never used to do those, but that might just be a plothole rather than it not being able. Considering they're supposed to be "the pure power of creation" or something, Illuminous being so weak compared to Night is odd. Each Aether is made by one of two gods, who wanted to counteract each other. One made Bestarin, so the other made Ferrous to make things they can't destroy. One made Verdant, so Amberite was made to cut it. Finally, the two gods made the God Aethers, to just be OP as hell. Illuminous is associated with Verdant and Ferrous. Night is associated with Amberite and Bestarin. The God Aethers can supercharge Aethers made by their god. For example, one character could barely make a blade with Amberite, but could make a full set of armor after bonding Night. Once again, this strangely seems to be Night-only. Someone with an Aether by one god CANNOT use the God Aether from the other god (I think it's still unknown whether they can use normal Aethers by the other god or not). There's a lot of worldbuilding behind the history of the Aethers, but that's a quick rundown of all the relevant stuff I remember. --- Something else to note: there may be more now than when he first wrote the novel. Syl started as a character in a planned rewrite, as an Aether of Wind most likely, for example. This is part of why we think Aethers might be sapient now, I believe (as well as the Liar of Partinel sample chapters, where he experimented with moving Aethers before deciding against that). Fun fact, that means that at one point he had them down as pre-Shattering, although that likely changed when he decided against them being in Liar. --- Anyone else who's read Aether, please add to or correct what I said here, I have a horrible memory.
  12. Brandon has previously said that Darro would be appearing in the Nightblood novel. However, the answer wasn't clear whether it would be as a worldhopper or transplanted character, so I PM'd him on Reddit to ask. His answer was that he's not sure yet, as a lot of things about the Nightblood novel are still undecided. However, he's leaning towards Darro being a native Nalthian, because (while "things in Stormlight" have canonized it, presumably meaning Mraize's gem) he's not finished with the worldbuilding for the Aether world yet.
  13. Saw this post, and the Intent "Anguish" makes me think of the Fell Twins, specifically "Despair" (which one is that, by the way? my thought is Agaris = Despair and Makkal = Slaughter, but I don't remember a confirmation). We also know that it is possible for Vessels of Shards to have children, and that Vessels having children "would have an effect" on the child. The latter two WoBs to me imply that the Twins could exist still in a similar form to how they do in Aether of Night, and a Shard with a similar intent to one of their names does make me curious. Now, I'm not definitively claiming that "Anguish" (for lack of a confirmed name) is actually related to the Twins, it's just something that caught my eye as either a possible connection or evolution of one of them.
  14. Here's a thought: if you were to bond a Bestarin Aether and lose, say, an arm, could said arm be replaced with that of a Kandra?
  15. So i know Brandon said AoN wasn’t canon, but the magic, or at least parts of it are. I don’t really have the time right now to read the book, but I’m still interested in the magic system. Could someone explain the basics to me? Or am I breaking some rules by asking?
  16. Okay, so we know there are four regular aethers, and two "god" aethers, but could there be others? I personally thought it would be pretty cool if there was another set that works by charging things with different energies: One thermal radiation (Incendous) and the other electricity (Galvane). What do you think? What would make cool aethers?
  17. So I've heard good things about the Magic in Aether of Night and would really like to know about it as it is apparently still canon but I was never able to find a copy of Aether of Night or any description of the magic online. Could someone please explain the magic to me? I would really appreciate it.
