  1. I'm afraid that Adolin's fight with Sadeas at the end of WoR will put him in danger of retribution from the Skybreakers. Does anyone else see that as a concern? He also has a personal vendetta against Szeth, is it likely Brandon will kill him off in the next couple books?
  2. Super cheesy and so sweet your eyeballs grew tastebuds. Then those tastebuds shriveled and died at the sugar overload. I started this over four months ago and repainted it twice. Now it looks a lot better compared to my first attempt on getting it down on paper. Original sketch: Ugh I really love drawing unashamed fanservice pictures that make the Cosmere fanclub look like the inside of a sport team's locker room. And another pure fanservice picture: Alethkar School of Witchcraft and Wizardry And one last piece of silliness and Adolin because for some reason I really like both. THE OFFICIAL ADOLIN KHOLIN HAIRCUT CHART
  3. Roshar OT4 is the best! I’ve been considering this pose for ages + + + I also have two Lift pieces
  4. esamitch

    Shadolin

Be still my beating heart I love these children more than life itself I didn't think I would but I do If they're not endgame I'm gonna flip a table
  5. Szeth's assassination attempt. Imagine this upside down for extra effect. Shardblades can't be Lashed because they are invested objects. And they dissolve into mist when you let go of them, unless you concentrate to make them stay in the physical world. Adolin was thrown to the ceiling and was probably concussed, and his Blade disappeared. But let's just suspend disbelief in the name of artistic license.

    First Base

You've got to wonder if touching a girl's safehand is a big thing to those prudish Vorin Alethis. Maybe this is what young Alethis do at Feasts when they play spin the bottle. Yeah, maybe I kinda prefer Shadolin over Shalladin or Shallastick.
  7. Made with a 15x15cm square of kami paper. I couldn't find what colour Adolin's Blade was, so I just went with grey.
  8. Major characters! CLICK HERE to open up full size. CLICK HERE to open up mini version to use in the new profile's cover photo. It fits!! I drew Sadeas to have a punchable face, and Amaram to be less punchable because he's supposed to be a smarmy smug wannabe-Radiant who looks like a normal dude from the outside. I imagined him to be late 30's or almost or about 40, because Jasnah was 34 as of WoK and he was her almost-husband. Taravangian is supposed to be like a wise sage kungfu master grandpa, who looks harmless. Taln wears yellow because topazes are the gemstone of the Stonewards, but later I looked it up and found out that topazes can come in other colours than orangey-yellow, but it was too late for that. Wit has a medieval pageboy haircut because his job is to something like a King's minstrel and his blue eyes are somewhere in between light and dark.
  9. I know these are not all what people would consider "main characters", but we're up to book 2/5 and this is who I decided were the main plot movers and shakers so far. When I read SA for the first time, I was struck by how vibrantly colourful the world was. Many readers see Roshar as a grim world on the edge of apocalypse, and WoK especially, drawn in their minds in shades of crem beige and bridge brown and grey, if you are a visualiser type of person who associates mood and tone with colours. I drew this originally as a bookmark so I could have cool colours while reading other, more boring books and textbooks and stuff. As usual, it's better in full resolution: OPTIONS > VIEW ALL SIZES > LARGE Or see below: Adolin's spren is dead and can't talk back. Sad. I have no idea what Parshmen and Parshendi are supposed to look like. There is one little chapter heading picture of Eshonai in silhouette, and after reading WoR, I got the picture in my head that Stormform and Shardbearer Parshendi were shaped like red skinned Predators (from the movie series) with red and black dreadlocks. I also thought about the Tsurani Cho-ja from the Riftwar series, and the Formics/Buggers from the Ender series. Image dumping time. Szeshonai (Eshoneth?) is OTP Sometimes books read like comic books to me and when I read a good chapter of anything I want to get my first impression of it down. It's pretty interesting to compare sketches from the first reading to sketches drawn after a re-read several months later. Thanks for reading to the end. Now here's a picture of Kaladin getting a haircut.
  10. esamitch

    Adolin

He's one of my favorite characters, but I had no idea how to draw him until recently! I'm toying with the idea that sidecuts are popular among the young Roshar nobles, and Adolin would be able to use it as a way to be fashionable without compromising a (moderately) tame military haircut.
  11. Before the homecoming game, the cheerleaders decorate the football team's lockers. In Alethkar, girls write prayers for their gentleman suitors to burn before a battle or a duel. This is how I imagined the preparation room in the dueling arena, and the glyph painted prayers for good luck and victory. In my mind, Soulcast rooms are a homogeneous shade of beigey brown that get decorated or carved later if people want to get fancy about it. And Alethis like curved architecture because it's functional, and it translates to curved archways and supports in building interiors because fashion. Those are real Shardblade stances! 12. I drew a suggestion out of a hat a little while back, and "Portrait of Adolin Kholin" was what came out, so here it is =) I had a lot of fun with this one, and man the black and blonde hair was tricky. Still not sure quite how I feel about the way that I solved it, but ah well. I'm thinking that next I'd like to create some scene with both Adolin and Kaladin. Would give me a chance to revisit Kaladin now that I've learned a thing or two more about portrait painting =) Let me know what you think!
  13. View in full resolution for maximum effect, please. OPTIONS > VIEW ALL SIZES > LARGE Character reference sheet for the Kholins and friends. Now you see what a bore Dalinar is by forcing all the men to wear uniforms 24/7 24/5 when all the girls get to wear pretty dresses with jewels and braids. I originally thought the havah was an overly complicated, fussy dress but after drawing them multiple times in multiple designs I've come to like their elegance and visual sleekness. Super large res for people who like collecting images or inspecting details: And for those unrepentant self-indulgent people (sadly including me on occasion) who like this kind of stuff - ALTERNATE UNIVERSE EDITION!! Would AU Kaladin own the Bridge Four t-shirt and the slave brands beanie from the Sanderson store? Who knows. And now you see why Shallan thinks all Alethi are huge. The Kholins' average height is higher than the national average in my country. The more times I draw a character, the more they evolve as I get a firmer grasp of how the written description translates to a picture that evokes the character traits and impressions of their personality that stood out most to me. When a character doesn't have viewpoints then I have to rely on other characters' relationship with them, and the occasional physical description that only comes in a line at a time. Renarin and Navani are hard for me for this reason, Renarin especially since he just fades into the background. And I don't think there's even a description of Salinor's blade that Adolin won in a duel and gave to Renarin.
  14. They say love means never having to say you're sorry. No apologies. BOOTS. They say diamonds are a girl's best friend, presumably because they give the best reading light. They, whomever "they" are, might also say that a girl's second best friend, the boring and reliable one who is always tasked with being party mum and giving the "he's no good for you" speech, is a good pair of sturdy boots. They also say an army marches on its stomach. They are wrong. FULL SIZE: ...and for all the people out there who prefer to bowl for the other team and wear their hearts on their sleeves rather than their socks, here you go: ...still no apologise.
  15. It is a fact of life that any longrunning - or doorstopping - series requires a fanservice filler episode (AKA, Interlude) for padding in between the heavy drama. Unfortunately for the Kholins, the Shattered Plains has no hot spring bathhouses. However, Branderbot 2000's imagination has managed to contrive a lighthearted situational comedy where Shallan is asked to write a report on Nohadon for Navani, and fills it in with some sketches of the King of Alethela. The delightful Adolin and his endearingly awkward younger brother Renarin volunteer their help. And of course Shallan accepts, in order to practice her feminine skills.

    BOY☆FRIEND

Since Shallan is a MAGICAL☆GIRL (boring clerk desk job by day, spy by night) she needs a BOY☆FRIEND - because when you've got files to steal and evil lighteyes to peep on, those pickle jars won't open themselves, and you won't have time to unsqueak those squeaky door hinges. Adolin Kholin happens to be the best BOY☆FRIEND. In fact, he took the title of Best BOY☆FRIEND from Relis Ruthar in Alethkar's annual BOY☆FRIEND competition. All the other potential BOY☆FRIENDs think that showing off their skills with long stabby things in the arena make them good BOY☆FRIEND material, but Adolin showed them all that pushing someone onto the sand and giving them a good long cuddle is what decides who the real winner is. Highjudge Istow does not approve because she is, unfortunately, not a MAGICAL☆GIRL. Anyways, made this a while ago and couldn't decide on a size for the glyph in the background. I think the size difference between MAGICAL☆GIRL Shallan and a Shardbearer is pretty endearing. It could give Siri and Susebron a run for their money but Susebron probably wins because he's a MAGICAL☆GOD☆KING☆HASUBANDO. Full image below. Let me know if you want a higher res copy. :-)
  17. So I hear using forgery to get dressed in the morning is considered excessively wasteful to most people. But hey, if you can do it, why stop? Let's see how far we can stretch reality... The result is the Cosmere equivalent of one of those Flash dress up games people used to play back in 2006. View in full res for best effect. Hint: (OPTIONS > View all sizes > 1800x700px)
  18. Did some doodling late one night while I had the "Scroll of Stances" page from Words of Radiance open, and decided to scan it in and do something with it. Now I have a nifty new desktop background. :-D Drawing Shardplate used to intimidate me and now I think I have gotten more confident with it. I still prefer bigger, bulkier looking designs because it feels more dangerous and threatening - a Shardbearer jumping into a fight is described like being hit by a boulder. If you want the desktop bg version, send me a PM.
  19. On my first reading I was under the impression that Shardplate was like Space Marine power armour, 8ft (250cm) of stabby stompy. How the heck did Kaladin get Helaran then? On further reading and wiki perusing I found that it was smaller than I originally thought. Since Shardbearers wear their clothes under their Plate and require special megahorses, I felt that they still needed to be heroically oversized compared to a normal Alethi. Some thoughts I had while sketching this: - Shardplate weighs ~250kg. You can still walk around with half busted Plate but you will feel the weight of a 15kg gauntlet when your elbow section shatters. Shardbearer training probably involves lots of squatz. - Helmets differ the most between suits of Plate and add several inches to your height. There must be empty space inside if you can get hit in the face several times and not die. Also Adolin's helm has little cat ears. - The Havah is a dress with a strip on the bottom that touches the ground and eventually gets dirty, but is meant to be replaced. I drew it as a separate petticoat underneath. You can't sew, cut seams, and resew on good silk because it ends up leaving little fraying pinholes on the fabric. - Adolin is shorter than Kaladin outside of Plate, since Kaladin is repeatedly described as being taller than everyone he meets except Rock. But whatever their height happens to be, Shallan is still a perfect little spoon size for either.
  20. Branderbot's newest offering to the series is, once again, a solid contribution to the genre. Unlike the ghost-written parody version by "Sandon Branderson" (it's super serious and no fun at all, don't read it guys - it totally sucks compared to the Branderbot romances), tensions get resolved in a conclusive way. And by this I mean that a villain is done away with karmic justice, of course! (what did you think I meant??) Our dear Shallan has managed to stumble across Adolin in Urithiru, desperate for someone to take his shirt...along with his coat and very possibly his pants. Who knows what may happen next? The only thing we are certain about is that Shallan is now feeling very appreciative of her perfect Memory.
  21. Lately I have been obsessed with drawing cartoon bunnies, so I figured that I might as well draw some Stormlight Archive bunnies.
  22. I've noticed a few users that have a particular favorite character that they adore and identify with very strongly. These users tend to be experts on their pet character. I thought I'd make a list of them so that anyone with questions about those characters can go to the resident expert. To start I have two, feel free to comment with others, I'll add them to the OP. Stormlight Archive: FeatherWriter: Renarin Kholin Maxal: Adolin Kholin Venture Mistborn: Siri Mail-mi, ScottLeft: Spook Emerald101: Elend Reckoners RPG: Reckonersverse Kobold King: Mizzy TwiLyghtSansSparkles, Edgedancer: Obliteration
  23. So, I've seen a lot of discussion about whether or not Adolin would end up being a Radiant. At first I thought that would be just a little too cliche, especially with the rest of his family, but then I started thinking about the Shardblade he already has, and I started wondering... would it be possible for Adolin to actually bring back the spren in his Shardblade? He already shows it an incredible amount of respect, and thinks of it to some degree as an actual, sentient being (talking to it before duels, refusing to give it a new name, etc). I know Kaladin and Syl have already talked about whether or not you could bring back a "dead" spren, but as far as I could tell, nothing conclusive was decided. My brother is convinced I'm wrong, but as I'm currently borrowing his copies of the books he can't disprove me. Thoughts?
  24. Adolin. Here’s the argument: Voidbinding is literally “binding the Void.” It is the magic Honor devised to ensnare Odium in Greater Roshar. As a magic, it combines the elements of both Honor and Odium. Preview of yet another unpublished post: Roshar’s three magics are Surgebinding (Honor and Cultivation); the “Old Magic” (Cultivation and Odium); and Voidbinding. Honor used Voidbinding to create the Old Magic – binding together the Minds of Cultivation and Odium (Cognitive boons and curses) – and Stormlight (binding together the gaseous Physical investiture of all three, the only Shard “Power” actually on Roshar, with one and maybe two exceptions...) This is all I want to get into for now… The Honorblades are Voidbinding fabrials. That’s why they were created. The True Desolation has come. Nale seeks to recover the Honorblades from the Stone Shamans and reunite the Honorblades with their Heralds. One “drooling” Herald is unable to answer the call. Coincidentally, that Herald’s Honorblade happens to be in Urithiru at the moment. Also coincidentally, young Adolin is about to be exiled for murder. Dalinar will save Adolin from execution by relinquishing “Taln’s” Shardblade and requiring Adolin to turn over his own. These will go to men chosen by Ialai as payment for her agreement to reduce the death sentence to exile. (I am SOOOOOO sorry Maxal and the other Edgedancer adherents. You make such a good case. But narratively, I think this one works better. Maybe the recipient of Adolin’s Shardblade will become an Edgedancer because of Adolin’s prior attentions.) She will see her rise to power (controlling three Shardblades now, once Oathbringer is found) well worth her husband's death. She will maintain power by rotating Shardblades among different suitors, a more wicked version of Penelope awaiting Odysseus. Dalinar will search his honor and conclude that he can give Adolin the Blade Kaladin gave him, not realizing that it's an Honorblade. Like Voidbinding itself, Adolin balances within him two competing “mandates” (intents): honor and hatred. On the one hand, Adolin is a decent, honorable man. He takes genuine delight in the company of any person no matter how humble (the bridge waterboys). He will also stand up to protect an unknown prostitute against aggression. He sounds a lot like Jezrien to me in both his humility and his humanity, even when his young self still wrestles with pride. He’s portrayed throughout the two books as a “lead and protect” kind of guy. But he also became “irrevocably enraged” (italics in original) when he “snapped” the moment before killing Sadeas. That’s Odium’s domain, and Adolin now lives there “irrevocably.” As I pointed out in this post, “irrevocable rage” emanates from “immortal hatred.” So that’s the argument. And before you object, first answer me why Adolin is the only character with so much black and blond hair? Metaphor? (Please don’t bring up that Jezrien was blond. It’s JUST a metaphor… until the Honorblade’s identity spren chooses to replace the “drooling Jezrien” with Adolin, who then becomes fully blond...) Thoughts?
  25. Hey! I've been working on a few drawings recently and I thought I would share them now! So tell me what you think of them! Also if you want to suggest any other ideas of what to draw from the stormlight archive that would be great. The first drawing is my depiction of Adolin. I kind of what to work on this some more, but I thought it looked good enough to show you guys. Adolin is suppose to be really good looking with messy hair in a military uniform. My second drawing is my new depiction of the NightWatcher. Now there isn't really a description of her in the book so I really had freedom to draw what ever I wanted.
