  1. He's a self published author who kind of reminds me of a loosely/poorly edited Brandon Sanderson with similar story telling skills and similar writing speed. I haven't seen him mentioned anywhere around here, so I came out of my normal lurking/consumption mode to ask about him! If you have read any of his books what were your opinions?
  2. I'm reading Will Wight's Of Darkness and Dawn. Will is a self-published author that I stumbled across lately who reminds me of a poorly edited version of Brandon Sanderson - which to me is still high praise. His Travelers Gate series is pretty good story telling. . .
  3. I believe There's actually WOB on the dragon part. Ok found the reference - it's not recorded, so it is a soft word, but it's at least more than speculation.http://www.tor.com/2013/08/15/the-way-of-kings-reread-epigraphs-to-part-two/
  4. I'm in the camp of Adolin being an Edgedancer. Adolin protecting the whore in the first book matches best with either the Windbreakers (protection) or the Edgedancers (caring about those who are forgotten) - and I doubt that the Brandon wrote that scene as a throwaway scene. In conjunction with his care for his blade, not just talking to it, but honoring it and remembering it, I believe an Edgedancer fits very well with Adolin. In conclusion, it would make sense for an Edgedancer to be the first to heal their blade, as healing and caring characterize Edgedancers, and those two characteristics would be ideal for restoring a shardblade. Edit: Leaving 'Windbreakers', but I meant Windrunners.
  5. Its worth noting that Stormlight isn't specifically a "fuel" for Surge Binding on Roshar, but somewhat more similar to Breaths on Nalthis. Why do I say this? Because Kaladin can take the Storm-light back up after infusing with it. To me, this means that gems are only special because they retain Stormlight for longer than say a rock - and they pick up stormlight during storms. A non-infused gem though isn't of any more use than a rock, so I would doubt that any of the shards would be blind to it. Of course, Preservation and Ruin were blind to all metals, not just Allomantic metals, so this line of reasoning isn't necessarily the soundest.
  6. Based on the Eshonai interlude, I believe it is highly unlikely that the Parshendi are immortal. Eshonai specifically thinks about the elderly listeners! Why would there be elderly if they were immortal? Emphasis is mine. Note that this actually implies that there is a significant knowledge gap between the elderly listener population and the general listener population. This is a possible indicator that the listeners are long lived enough to live through significant changes in culture. If the songs originated a thousand years ago, but the elderly were only 80 years old, then it is unlikely that large amounts of additional deterioration of the songs would have occurred in the past 70 years since the eldery learned the songs. However the elders do have significant insight into the old songs, so they are old enough to have observed significant cultural change to the Listeners. If the elders are 200 years old, or 800 years old, or so on, then a significant amount of change could have occurred in the listener culture, and the elders would have special insight into the changes to the songs, and what the songs used to say. This is doubtful though, because we know that recent Listener culture HAS changed significantly in the relatively recent past. They've started to learn new forms, which must have a profound impact on their culture. Its possible in the excitement of learning new forms, they've forgotten to pass down the important songs to their children? In any case, the Listeners are very unlikely to be immortal. Edit: I wonder how warform was discovered! That seems to be a fairly odd form to randomly discover. Was Nimble form discovered before or after war form? Questions, so many questions.
  7. One circumstantial argument is that half shards could be fairly easy to make if all they took was crusting a shield with gemstones, and then leaving the shield out in a storm. Admittedly they'd have disadvantages such as the gems being knocked loose, but the advantage of being able to stop a shardblade would more than compensate for that. So, given that there doesn't seem to be any halfshard like objects that are composed of gem encrusted shields, I strongly suspect that gems are cuttable.
  8. Is there evidence beyond Harmony's name leading to the belief that Harmony's intent is actually Harmony? I'm confused how the mixing of Ruin and Preservation could result in a completely different intent than either of the originals rather than some strange hybrid. If you mixed another pair of antithetical shards would you get Harmony v2.0*? It seems somewhat unlikely to me. That said, I have no idea what else Harmony's intent could be, as any mixture between the intent of Ruin and the intent of Preservation seems like it could only lead to insanity - unless it was a completely neutral intent, which just doesn't seem fair. Digressing further into a mini theory, Adonalsium quite likely didn't have an intent in the same way that one of the shard's do, so its possible that Harmony has reached that state again on a smaller scale. And if that's true, that could be attractive to Odium, who doesn't want to corrupt his own intent by polluting himself with other intents. Would adding neutral intent shardic essence to shardic essence with an intent dilute that intent? *Of course with higher resolution, a faster processor, and. . . oh wait.
  9. On this topic - how does Galladon get off of Sel? It apparently isn't TOO difficult for the 17th shard to transport individuals at least out of Sel.
  10. That's the great thing about a forums like this is that we get to discuss and beat things out together. I like the theory, and I'm wondering if there could be an equivalent spren to a "Wednesday spren" in Roshar where Cognitive aspects really seem to be very expressed. Could a Parshendi that bonded to a Wednesday spren always stay in Wednesday? It sounds somewhat silly, but I'd imagine there could be some interesting possibilities.
  11. Have you read Talion? I think it was his first novel, and while it has it's flaws it actually has interesting villains/anti-villians, and an interesting plot that's decently executed. That said, I haven't read much of his later stuff, it sadly didn't seem to follow up on the promise of Talion.
  12. I agree that if Amaram publicly admitted to receiving the shards from Kaladin it could complicate the situation. Yes people would question Kaladin 'giving' the shards over, but in some ways the publicity behind it would work against rumors that he'd stolen the shards as if he'd stolen the shards he want to hide it. But he doesn't have to admit publicly to receiving the shards from Kaladin. Alternatively he could a) be evasive (Which definately has its problems, but they are possibly surmountable) Lie - and send Kaladin and his men elsewhere - say the shattered plains as a reward for their killing the earlier brightlord. c) Always wear shardplate and never talk to anyone ever again becoming an anonymous killing machine that only eats cheese and then only in extreme privacy. I think regardless of a) or , moving Kaladin and his men elsewhere would not be a bad idea - and likely would not be perceived badly by Kaladin, as he wants to go elsewhere anyways. It could also be wise if a public announcement was made, but it would very likely be perceived by others as a sign the announcement wasn't really true. I agree that it's an obvious alternative that is way better than what Amaram did. I guess Kaladin could later claim that he'd been forced to turn over the shards, but his rumor starting would probably be blunted. Agreed. Any enemy of his would only have to track down Kaladin or break the loyalty of one of Amaram's close lighteyes to get the whole story, and could easily use the information to destabilize Amaram.
  13. Wouldn't allegations of murdering and enslaving dark eyes in order to steal shards be much more likely to cause unrest or other problems? In my eyes that is the one of largest weakness in a utilitarian justification for Amaram's actions. Note that he didn't kill all the witnesses, and it's unlikely that all the witnesses had demonstrated more loyalty to him than Kaladin had, so Amaram is opening himself up to rumors started by his men.
  14. Just because we don't know something with complete certainty doesn't mean that we have to assign equal weight to all the possibilities. I don't know for certain that the moon isn't made of cheese as I've never been to the moon and tried to eat it*, but I can say that while it may be made of cheese, it almost certainly is not as the preponderance of circumstantial evidence is against the moon being made of cheese. Similarly, without any reasonable evidence that what Amaram was doing was necessary beyond his own and Restare's beliefs (which are themselves of unknown value), we can reasonably say that while Amaram may have been justified in some framework which we can only guess the details of because we have no evidence for it, its more likely that the killings were unjustified based on the evidence that we do have, such as the already demonstrated loyalty of Kaladin and his men (charging a hostile shardbearer for Amaram's sake), Another way to look at the whole situation is to judge Amaram as Amaram judged Kaladin and his men. To use Moogle's summary, If there's even a 1% chance that by killing Amaram, 100 people's lives could be saved, than Amaram should be killed (per Amaram's suggested philosophy, I'm not saying that's Moogle's philosophy). In this vein it could be argued that Kaladin - knowning that he has in the past saved thousands of lives and will likely save thousands more - should do his best to kill Amaram as Amaram represents a threat to Kaladin. It would be the "safest way" of ensuring that Amaram won't act against Kaladin again, possibly preventing Kaladin from saving thousands of lives. *Been to the moon yes - tried to eat it no. Stupid spacesuit.
  15. If he has the second heightening and the associated perfect pitch he may be able to learn accents much faster. I suspect that perfect pitch of the second heightening would grant the ability to perfectly distinguish between different tonalities as well as musical pitches.
