  1. Interestingly enough, I didn't really make the connection between the whole Old Vorinism thing and the Apostasy until someone mentioned it on this thread. Just goes to show you that even an LDS practitioner doesn't always grasp some references to the beliefs. I always saw it as a parallel to the old Roman Catholic church and their ideas of having the priest teach the crowd and not really letting them have any information. One of the ardents that Adolin speaks to says something to the effect of, "Now we let people worship and get to know the Almighty personally, instead of trying to preach to them what we believe." Which, now that I think about it, is an LDS/Christian belief: having a personal relationship with God. The practitioners of Vorinism also believe that the Almighty is their divine father, I think. I'm pretty sure I can find a reference somewhere, but I'm too lazy to actually go look it up. I also love the character of Jasnah and the depiction of her beliefs. It's very refreshing to not see another Hollywood atheist. Even better, her character in the book is thought of in high esteem by the other characters who personally know her very well. Atheists are not raging Christian/religion haters who want no one to believe in God. Nor do all religious people wish to convert everyone in the world. Jasnah's "live and let live" approach warms my heart. We can all have tolerance for everyone, regardless of what we believe. Speaking of tolerance, I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for being so thoughtful, intelligent, and considerate. This is an extremely delicate topic matter, but I knew you guys would have the dignity and sensitivity to manage it well. Well done to everyone who has contributed!

    Vin

That's probably the best picture of Vin I've seen in a long time. And I've seen tons of Vin pictures.
  3. It is when you're reading a very serious section about Dalinar talking about the Codes and the Way of Kings and you can't stop reading it in Terry Crews' voice. Wearing nothing but a bath towel. And pec jiggling. It's all about, you know, "The way you achieve a goal is more important that the goal itself," and then you instantly think, "DOUBLE SUN POWAAAAAAAH!"
  4. Wanted to make a Twilight version of Stormlight Archive, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I'll put a basic summary of my ideas below. Shallan is Bella, Adolin is Edward, Kaladin is Jacob, extras are extras. Follows the basic plot. Also realized halfway through how creepily similar Cullen and Kholin sound. Replaced "vampire" with Knights Radiant, changed the SPARKLES to glowing, and somehow this allows Adolin to read minds (Meyer has never been consistent on her lore anyway). The three vampires at the end of Twilight are from the Dustbringers, and the Volturi are the Skybreakers (which are also scarily similar, in the sense of tyrannical police force). I think I somehow managed to shoehorn in Lopen as the guy who almost kills Shallan with his chull, but not sure. Rosalie would be Jasnah, because she has an awesome story that is unfortunately left in the background compared to the TROO WUV of the main plot. Dalinar is Carlisle, Navani is Esme, Renarin is Jasper, and that's as far as I got. I think I quit right around the moment when I realized that Kaladin would be crushing on Shallan and Adolin's newborn child. Also, Adolin would always be described as "Adonis-like", "with tousled blond/black hair", "rich chestnut skin", "strikingly blue eyes" or "windows to the soul". Shallan would have, "Fiery red mane", "delicate, pale skin", and other such nonsense. Misspellings would abound as Meyer has protection from editors. Shallan and Adolin's honeymoon would be an island off the west coast of Alethkar. After experiencing sex for the first time, Shallan would become obsessed with getting more, despite Adolin harming her and leaving bruises. Eventually, Shallan would become a Knights Radiant and live in happily freaking after land with Adolin and her perfect newborn daughter: Lift. I think I threw up just writing that.
  5. Great. Now because of you, I cannot unsee Dalinar shouting about Old Spice, breaking the Fourth Wall, and jiggling his pecs.
  6. When you nearly get caught laughing in the middle of a quiet English classroom because you're on 17th Shard. No lie: When Tor was handing out the WoR previews, I had to catch up on the school laptop. It took every ounce of self control I had to not break out screaming in joy and frustration. It HURT.
  7. This made my freaking day, along with SAFE ABS and Elhokar thinking he's going to be assassinated because of the rock.
  8. Voted for Jasnah because of a heck of a ton of new information. Still love Kal, depression and SAD and angst and all.
  9. As I've mentioned in another article, you need support teams. Anyone who's played any sort of RPG that involves a party system or cooperative play knows this very well. For every DPS player, you need a Tank and a Support (generally a buffer and a healer, depending on the game). Sometimes the DPS is the Tank, but that's beside the point. In my little model that I've just created (DPS (Damage dealer) Tank (Damage absorber/glorified meatshield) Healer, and Buffer), I have one active fighter (the DPS) and three passive fighters. This fits Jasnah's model of one warrior, three noncombatants. In this situation, I would say that the Windrunner/Skybreaker/Dustbringer is my DPS, the Stoneward is my Tank, my Edgedancer/Truthwatcher is my healer, and my Buffer is any of the rest (doing little stuff like Soulcasting and other such things). However, that is all in a combat zone. So, what if they aren't in combat? The handy thing is that the Orders have Surges that can be used for mundane tasks and double for battlefield capabilities. Since three out of ten orders are almost solely combat oriented (Windrunners, Skybreakers, and Dustbringers), there's your 1/4. The rest have more support/tanking abilities. I would imagine that these would be the orders that are diplomats, ambassadors, policing forces (in the case of Skybreakers) and other such duties that Jasnah describes. Going back to the OP Question though, I'd say that 4 is the max amount of Kholin Radiants I want. You need some contrast, and I know of at least one that doesn't really fit the mold for a Radiant (I'm looking at you, Elhokar).
  10. Nope, I was getting my boots signed. I didn't have any books on me, so I figured that it would be funny and a good shout out to WoR. Apparently he'd never signed boots before, so there was another bonus.
  11. So I was getting my boots signed at Comic Con when Brandon suddenly presented me with this opportunity to be awesome. http://t.co/iDV2Nh7kiE EDIT: Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it.
  12. Dang that quiz is hard. Could have gotten more if not for the fact that you actually have to spell out Versus in the Alcatraz books.
  13. I'll give you a massive hint: It's not a Cosmere book.
  14. Dang. Okay... A red two layered liar.
  15. Harmony. Mentioned in one of the tenets of Pathianism (spl?). BTW, if I get it and more than two days pass, someone take it for me. School is eating up my time like a leviathan.
  16. Queen proverbially and literally slams the door in Kaladin's face? He's got a Shardblade, so he can just cut open the door. However, is the Queen even still in control? There are riots through Kholinar before the Everstorm comes. The city is in a state of sheer chaos and anarchy. A natural disaster the size of Hurricane Katrina will not help things. I'm seriously expecting her to be dead, along with her son, when/if Kaladin gets there. As for Kaladin's credibility in Hearthstone, the Shardblade alone should be enough to convince people he's okay. Remember, Shardblades being won by darkeyes is insanely rare. Kaladin remembers a grand total of four darkeyes who managed to win one. He even says that it's a legendary event when he gets his. To the people of Hearthstone, a Shardblade cannot just be stolen. It's inconceivable to them. It'd be like telling my friends that I stole the entire cache of gold in Fort Knox. Now, will Roshone spin this to his advantage and call Kaladin a thief (if he's even still alive)? Most definitely. But I think that by the time that Kaladin gets there, the people of Hearthstone will have had enough of his crap. Or they'll be desperate for any sort of help. Keep in mind that their village has been devastated. Seeing a familiar face, even if it's the face of a slave who carries a suspicious Shardblade, will be a welcome sight for them.
  17. That is... beautiful. Officially nominating this to be Syl's theme!
  18. If Stormlight Archive was written by every Dystopian Teen writer ever... (No disrespect to fans of the genre, but I find it incredibly repetitive and reeks of jumping on the Suzanne Collins bandwagon. Hunger Games I believe is actually well written). Well, first off, Shallan would be the main character for the entire series. Having a male main character? That's just silly. Females are so much more interesting than males. Already done in the source work, but she would have an insanely tragic backstory. She would be much more obviously mentally scarred by the backstory, and either work for the Evil Alethi Government, or just live with its corruption. A catalyst will ensue and she is suddenly on the run and fighting the government. Predictable plot twists ensue as the already-shown-to-be-insanely-corrupt government is revealed to be... insanely corrupt. Didn't see that one coming. Shallan will have a mentor, who will die. Grieving over the loss and adding 55 pounds to her emotional baggage, she will encounter a similarly tortured male who is also a rebel, may possess tattoos, and generally is the edgy type. For humor's sake, I will suggest Kaladin to be this male character. They will instantly hook up with no explanation, randomly make out (or have sex, depending on how "edgy" the book is) at very awkward points, and bare their respective backstories to one another. Somehow despite both Kaladin and Shallan having lasting emotional trauma, their love is so powerful that it instantly heals all of their psychological problems. In comes the boy next door. Again for humor's sake, I suggest Adolin to be this character. Shallan will suddenly become confused as she inexplicably also harbors feelings for him, despite never having evidence to suggest this in the book. She will string both Kaladin and Adolin along before finally choosing one (which one varies according to the author. It's pretty much a 50/50 chance, so flip a coin). They will proceed to make out again (or have more sex), defeat the Evil Emperor with sheer grit and pluckiness, and live happily ever after. There will also be obligatory deaths, just to provoke the reader to throw the book against the wall. Dalinar and Jasnah will die. Whichever suitor Shallan didn't pick will die (so those shippers will shut up), and Shallan and her chosen suitor will proceed to have Babies Ever After. As for the other characters, Sadeas would be the Evil Chancellor to Emperor Elhokar, Dalinar would be the leader of the rebellion, Renarin wouldn't be in the book, Jasnah would be a tactical advisor, and Bridge Four would be a rebel squad under Kaladin's command. Hoid would be a mystical hobo that gives Shallan random advice whilst she is caught in a moral quandary. Bonus points if he is inexplicably black. Odium would be a sequel hook that is not explained for three books. Rant over. Proceed with your lives. EDIT: Thanks to Grey Pilgrim for reminding me about the awful abomination that is First Person Present Tense. Predictably, this book would have it as well. EDIT the Second: The book would not be called The Stormlight Archive. That's too long for our fragile reader heads. It would simply be called Stormlight, to confuse readers into reading it because it's similar to Twilight.
  19. I feel like can go for either Shallan remembering killing her mother, or Kaladin trying to defend Elhokar while having lost Syl. The title also matches their mood perfectly. They feel like they're truly alone in the universe.
  20. Welcome to the forums! 1. I honestly have no idea what Brandon was trying to do here, but it was probably just a Parshendi scouting group that they accidentally ran into. Perhaps they were Parshendi that were trying to escape from Narak when Eshonai went nuts and tried to change everyone into stormform? I really don't know, but hoser makes a good point. 2. She knows, she's just consciously forgotten it. After Kaladin kills the chasmfiend, she mentions that she couldn't have sent her illusions out on Pattern, because... so she must know about it. Whenever she uses the Shardblade, she also remembers her mother's murder, so there's another hint. Basically, she's trying to detach herself from the memories of her mother's death, so she just refers to it as a Shardblade. Like hoser, I really liked that part of the book. 3. Yeah, I admit, it's a little cheap. But Brandon has actually foreshadowed this sort of thing very well (he usually does). In one of Dalinar's visions (WoK) he sees a Stoneward use a healing fabrial. It's hinted that Nale uses the exact same sort of fabrial to heal Szeth. Also, I've seen so many resurrections in fiction that this last minute healing really doesn't bother me. 4. To stick that memory in there right when Shallan is in the thick of the action slows down the pace, derails the storyline, and makes no sense. I'd be supremely bothered if right when people are dying and the Everstorm is right on top of them, Shallan has a flashback to the time when she killed her mom. It'd be like Metroid: Other M, where Samus gets a guy killed because she's suddenly in shock from seeing Ridley show up, even though she's fought Ridley hundreds of times (really just poor characterization in that game, really). Shallan's so caught up in saving everyone that it'd be really weird to suddenly space out. It's after all the action's died down that she has to confront the truth. Just like how after Kaladin saved the bridgemen, he actually has to face his PTSD, depression, SAD, etc.
  21. Buy. I can see a very lucrative business going on here once the FTL drives get going. Take your magic with you to other worlds on the cheap. There will be Investiture vending machines once FTL happens.
  22. I'm a big fan of throwing him into the ocean. You see, even with his shield, air can still go through it (otherwise he'd suffocate while shielding himself), and even if he shielded the entire time underwater, his air supply would run out pretty dang fast. His healing ability would be negated (unless he somehow manages to instantly transmute materials into oxygen as part of the healing process, which sounds very unlikely to me). He is only shown to Tensor steel and other inorganics, but at the bottom of the ocean, the pressure alone would guarantee that he can't get out, if only due to the sheer amount of water. Now, how do we manage to throw him in the ocean? Take him by surprise by gassing him instantly. Air is shown to be able to flow through his shield and he probably can't tensor it (running on the assumption that he can only tensor solids). His healing factor would be a problem, but in the fight with Steelheart, Prof gets tired. If we pump enough gas in, he'd probably succumb to its effects. Next, put him on a plane. Covered in snakes. Poisonous snakes. Yes, really. Fly out to the ocean and put Prof in a bamboo box at least three feet thick with no holes. Seal it with organic glue of some kind. Weigh down the box with whatever heavy material you deem fit. There's not too many things out there that are really heavy and organic, so I'll use giant trees. Place the box with the trees attached into a submarine able to withstand tons of pressure. When you deem it deep enough, jettison the box with the trees and wave goodbye. If you still think this is not enough, you can flood the box with anthrax or something.
