  1. Greetings, my fellow artists! First of all, I wanted to let you all know how excited I am to see more fanworks finally going up here on the site. You guys are seriously awesome, and I love seeing what the fan community has to offer. Keep it up! That said, I wanted to remind you all about our gallery. You can find it by clicking on the link I just gave you, or by scrolling all the way up clicking on the lovely Gallery tab at the top of your screen. Not only will you have neat features like comments, artist captions, and a nifty personal gallery that shows up in your user profile, but your artwork will also appear on the front page! At least, until enough people submit to push yours off. We are fortunate enough to have been given the Gallery software by our generous contributors, so we'd really like to see it get some more love. (NEW 8/25)That said, the Fan Art subforum has officially closed, and all its threads have moved to the Creator's Corner board. When sharing your fanart with us, from now on, please direct all your submissions to the gallery rather than posting them in a thread. You're still welcome to discuss your fanart here in the Creator's Corner, of course, but the gallery really is the best way to show us your stuff. Thank you, and happy creating!
  2. As you guys might have seen in the news topic, I've kicked off an art search for the Coppermind, so we can better illustrate the worlds and inhabitants of Brandon's work. One of my favorite parts of wiki-walking has always been admiring the pictures I found, and it's something I've sorely missed when it comes to the Coppermind. Rather than pulling random images off Google and Deviantart, though, I decided to invite our brilliant fanartists out there to contribute directly, choosing the works they contribute and how they're credited. I want to make sure we have a place to discuss the search in case people have questions or anything they'd like to add, but since a news post isn't the best place to do that, here we are. Don't forget to spread the word - if you happen to know any awesome fanartists, let them know that we need their help! The more people participate, the better the end result will be. Thanks, guys!
  3. Aka, me! I've been looking to get involved with 17th Shard for a while now, and I finally had the opportunity to find my niche (other than the RP, that is). So here I am, in charge of the wiki. It's still under construction, but we're working on it. Don't forget: the more all of us contribute, the better the wiki will be! Anyways, feel free to post here or contact me directly if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the wiki, or if you want to know what pages we need. I'm looking forward to working with you all!
  4. Hi everyone! I'm KChan, and I'm your friendly neighborhood lurking admin. I haven't really poked my head out onto the main forums in a long time and I feel really bad about that. I was wondering how to work my way back into the swing of things when Chaos suggested an AMA, so here I am! Ask away!
  5. I'm not sure what made it look like a minion, but it's actually from an old Scott Pilgrim avatar creator thing a bunch of my friends and I did when that movie came out. I liked how it looked so I just started using it as an avatar. It's actually still online, somehow. LORD RULER YES. Also, one of my best friends lives near Wellington, so you never know!
  6. I primarily hang out in the general discussion areas. Sometimes I browse theories and RPs as well, as I'm big into RPing. That's why I'm on MBI so much. I also used to hang around the intro forums, handing out Welcome Cookies. I have no idea where that image got off to, though. My current superpower is probably finding weird random crap on the internet. It used to be ripping towel racks out of walls, but that hasn't happened in a while. I would probably choose something like telekinesis. Super useful and also fun! A few! Most of them though I've met through the site and met up with in person after; there are only a couple who were the other way around. The admins of course I all consider friends, though we've only hung out in person at signings (never met Weiry though, unfortunately). I got to hang out with Feather and Little Wilson during Words of Radiance and they're super rad people. Moru and I have gone to a couple conventions together and she's one of my best friends. Kuri Shardweaver is my fiance! <3 MerryBerry has been one of my best friends since high school. I hang out with Borborygmus in person when we're in the same state; I even went to a veterinary conference with her despite not working in the field, which was a really cool and educational experience even though it sounds really bizarre that I went. I think I convinced another friend to join but he only posted once. XD We haven't set a date for the wedding yet, but we're thinking summer of next year. Trying to iron out what we've got to work with for a budget before we start booking things.
  7. The map has me a little too far east. I'm actually in Clearwater, FL. ^^
  8. My first name is Kerry. -chan is an affectionate Japanese suffix. Back in like 8th-9th grade, my friends started calling me "K" and "K-chan" and it just kinda stuck. I have a number of friends who still call me that, including my roommate. XD I don't like having hyphens in my online usernames, so it got shortened to KChan. I'm basically KChan or KChan323 on everything I register for that isn't adult-related (bill pay websites, etc). Also, "K" by itself is kind of not so good of a screen name. XD
  9. Enter the thread ninja! Editing now! A whole freaking lot, that's what! XD Among other things, and in no particular order, I: Bought a house and moved into it Got engaged!!! Began a new career in a new field as an apprentice optician, and since moved up to be the person who actually makes the glasses Still haven't finished the sweater I began knitting like 5 years ago. But I started on the sleeves!!! Learned how to build a computer by building my own Rescued a cat (any Sharders in Florida who want a cat? Seriously, we can't keep him; he was literally thrown into my yard out of a car the other day. He's fine, but needs a home that isn't my back porch) Went to Yellowstone! So awesome! Generally was a useless derp who played video games instead of checking the site like I should Some other stuff. Some cool, some less so So yeah. It's been nuts. XD Also, I do actually need math lessons from you at some point. Sine, cosine, and tangent. XD A pretty long time! I first registered back in 2010, then took on a bunch of wiki work and became a mod. Back when we first installed the Invision Power Suite (anyone remember when that was? Like 2010 or 2011 I think?) I offered to help with skinning and became an admin. EDIT AGAIN: According to Chaos it was 2/11/11. So I have an adminversary and everything! I'm learning stuff from this too! XD
  10. So messing around with Google's new +1 system, I decided that the first thing I should "Like" is 17th Shard. Upon doing a google search for the site, I noticed a pair of rather unexpected links in the results.
  11. So, in my Wheel of Time journey, I've always been fascinated by the Aes Sedai. Frustrated, sometimes, but fascinated nonetheless. Here we have an organization of powerful women - in more ways than one - who shape the events of the world. But at the same time, they're still human - perhaps more so than even they themselves would prefer to admit. So. That said, one of the questions that often comes up in my discussions with other WoT fans is: which Ajah would you choose? Even my male friends get in on it, pretending for the sake of conversation that Asha'man had Ajahs as well. For me, it's a tossup between Green and Brown. On one hand, I'm a total bookworm and can easily spend all day reading. But on the other, I'm extremely active. I teach martial arts, I like guns (when used responsibly, of course), and of course, there's the requisite (and somewhat stereotypical) liking of men. I've always got along better with men in general than I have with women, and many of the female friends I do have also get along with men better. I have a temper, though it's not always easy to bring out. That said, many of my WoT friends have told me that they always saw me as a Green, so in the end, that tipped the scales for me. What about you guys? What's your Ajah, and why?
  12. Listen to us develop this theory live, in real-time, in the first episode of the Shardkeepers Podcast! [A link will go here when it's available. For now, use your imagination.] So, while recording the Shardkeepers Podcast, I was hit with a sudden lightbulb about magic on Sel. A lot of credit goes to Chaos here, since talking about his theory is what caused me to think of it this way, so a big shoutout to him. Anyways, I think I've figured out a feasible way to explain what's going on on Sel, and specifically, what's up with these "region-locked" magics, so to speak. First, we need to take a good look at the nature of the Shards on Sel. For that, I want to turn to the dictionary definitions of their names, so I went ahead and grabbed them from dictionary.com. You can see them right here: For Devotion, my interpretation of current theorizing trends is that we tend to focus on the first two definitions primarily, but I want to invite you guys to make sure and include the third as a possible interpretation. Devotion, however, is pretty straightforward. Meanwhile, Dominion -- well, Dominion is interesting. I've read a lot of things associating Dominion with Definition #2 - control, domination - probably in part by whom we tend to associate with that particular Shard. However, I'm beginning to think that we're not looking at Dominion in the right light. I think we need to view Dominion primarily as it is portrayed in Definition #3 (though #1 and #4 are pretty applicable as well, so include those if you like). Bearing with me so far? Okay? Good. Okay. So. We've got Devotion, which like I said before, is pretty self-explanatory and not that hard to expand a definition on. We've also got Dominion, thinking of it in the sense of a territory or domain instead of the commonly perceived role of domination. That covers the nature of the two Shards we're dealing with here. In order to continue, let's talk about what we know about the Dor. First, I have a quote from Brandon on our very own forum Q&A. I pulled this from Windy's archive, which is much easier to sort through than the actual thread, so I can't link to the exact post, but I'll offer free rep to anyone who can find it for me. Anyways, here's the quote: So. This is interesting. Obviously a lot hinges on this, but for the sake of this theory, I will be operating under the assumption that yes, the Dor is powered by both of them. Moving on to this reddit post (formatting mine): Okay. So. Pretty self explanatory here; I don't need to expand on it any more. Moving on to the next post: Interesting. We've seen the bit about being born in a particular region on Sel before, very clearly spelled out in Elantris, but the idea of rewriting a connection is new. That, however, is for a different theory. Right now, I want to focus on that affinity. What is it, exactly? The answer, I believe, lies in this post (emphasis/formatting mine): Okay, so obviously we're not dealing with Odium or Scadrial here, but look at that italicized sentence again. "People born on Scadrial have an Identity tied to it and its magic." Note the capital I here. Is the Identity of the people of Scadrial that ties them to its magic in particular the same as the affinity that ties people on Sel to their local region's magic? It certainly seems that way. So, how are we looking so far? To sum it up, here's what we have so far: The Dor is (assumedly) fueled by both Devotion (presumed to be: dedication, attachment, assignment) and Dominion (presumed to be: domain, territory, nation). All regional magics on Sel are different manifestations of what is, essentially, the same magic. Everyone on Sel is born with an affinity for their region's magic. This affinity, for the sake of this theory, is assumed to be Identity. Now, I'm sure a lot of you already know where I'm going with this. Sel is a very special instance of magic in the Cosmere: not only are the magics region-based, everything seems to arrange very neatly along cultural and political borders. Why is this? What separates these region-based magics from one another, and what causes this almost-too-tidy separation? The answer, I believe, is the Shards themselves, Dominion and Devotion, and how they interact with the Identity of the people of Sel. This is where my interpretation of the name Dominion is key. Look at the people in our own world. If you were born and raised in America, you tend to view yourself as American. Those from England tend to think of themselves as being English. Sure, we're all citizens of Planet Earth, but when asked what country we're from, we're probably not going to tell people that we're Earthlings. We're going to say English, American, Australian, Canadian, whatever. Now, apply that to the people of Sel. Here we have the Arelish, the Jindo, the MaiPon, and all the rest. All of the peoples on Sel have their own cultural and national Identity, and why shouldn't they? It's a perfectly normal thing to do. The Emperor's Soul taught us a lot about how Identity works. How we view ourselves has a huge impact on who and what we are, and on a very fundamental level at that. Particularly in a setting where Identity has profound cosmological implications, is it really so hard to believe that it would affect the manifestation of a magic system powered by Shards named Dominion and Devotion? And so you have this vast array of magics, each varying manifestations of the same magic, each tied to a certain part of the world. A culture, a way of life, a country. A Dominion. What would the citizens of a country usually feel towards their people, their way of life? Some measure of loyalty, patriotism, or maybe just an association with their cultural identity and who they are. Devotion, so to speak. Of course, we have the unusual cases. Those living close to the Arelish border have sometimes been taken by the Shaod, but that's really not so strange when you come to think of it. Living on the border between two nations, it is only natural for some people to associate somewhat with both of them. Galladon, despite being a Dula, spent much of his life in Elantris, quite possibly giving him the Identity needed to be chosen by the Shaod. The Jindoeese have a very strong cultural Identity, giving them a tie to their region's magic no matter where they live. To sum it up in a very cheesy way, the magic you have access to if you're from Sel depends on which Dominion to which you owe your Devotion. And that, my friends, is how I propose magic on Sel works.
  13. It's been well over a year since the last installment of the 3 Word Story franchise took the General Discussion forum by storm. Threads have come and gone, leaving our old friend buried behind pages and pages (or maybe just one page; I was too busy doing homework to count) of posts. But, my dear friends, the wait is over. It's time. I present to you: The rules are the same as always. Post 3 words that add onto the story. Pay attention to the Quick Reply box so you don't get ninja'd! For the sake of coherency, I suggest we make compilation posts every couple of pages so we can actually read the thing. And don't forget to make sure your out-of-story comments are distinguishable from your contribution! Ready, start! One time, when
  14. Anyone here read Homestuck? I'm almost caught up now, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. When I first started reading it, I wasn't really sure if I'd like it, but I got more and more into it as the story progressed. One of these days, I would like to get a group together to cosplay all of the trolls. Allllllll of them. :::
  15. As the topic states, welcome to 17th Shard! I know we're all saddened by the loss of TWG, but I'm also really excited that 17th Shard is able to give a wonderful community a new home. I'm KChan, also known as the Highprince of Stuff, and all my contact information can be found in my profile, so if you need something or just want to chat, drop me a line! The best way to get started here is simply to look around and start posting! You'll find a shiny new section just for Dan Wells, the new Reading Excuses forum, and - of course - more Brandon Sanderson discussion than you can shake a Shardblade at! Not that you'd want to, of course. That just sounds really, really dangerous, and is kind of a silly idea to boot. In order to get to know the staff better, I suggest you head on over to the Introductions forum. There you'll find the Get to Know Your Overlords 17th Shard Administration thread, along with the highly entertaining Staff According to Will. And to get to know what the various member groups do, take a look at our About page, which I will be conveniently linking you to right about here Also, don't forget to introduce yourself! It's a great way to get to know your new internet buddies, and also a great way or those of us who weren't very active on TWG - if at all - to get to know you. Once again, Welcome!
  16. So we all wish that we had superpowers, I'm sure (if not, why the heck don't you?), but we often fail to realize that this world has bestowed on us some actual powers which, while often lame - hence the title of the thread - and generally useless for saving anybody (or, to be fair, taking over any worlds), can be pretty dang "super" in their own way. So what are yours, and how do you know you have them? I'll start with a couple of mine: Real Life Soundtrack - I have both the appropriate and inappropriate varieties of this superpower. No matter where I go, no matter what I do, music will follow me. Songs will come on the radio or on shuffle play that are either so perfect for the situation it's creepy, so inappropriate it's actually funny, or so ironic I feel the urge to tweet about it (I don't, though. You're welcome). Even when I'm writing or RPing, music will often come on that either propels the scene to new heights or totally kills the moment. I can even think about a song and it will come on the radio. It's like I have a telepathic link with all music, everywhere. Limited Super Strength - This one, oddly enough, mainly manifests when used against towel racks. I have ripped towel racks (yes, more than one) out of the wall more times than I can count. One of them several times. I never try to destroy them, it just happens. I don't even have to touch the rack itself. I can take hold of a towel that's just hanging innocently on the rack and the entire thing will come crashing down like it's trying to eat my face. My strength also likes to manifest versus bookshelves, or generally at any given moment when carrying a heavy object will get me weird looks from the general public, but nowhere has it been more apparent than versus the towel racks. So, tell me your powers! And if you're feeling particularly daring, you can try giving other members of the thread a superhero name.
  17. Who here is excited for the Words of Radiance release? I know I am, but then, that's probably a silly question to post on 17S. Anyways, it's a long way to Utah for some of us, and since we can't all be here, we'll be livestreaming the event. You can read more about it here. And, of course, use this topic to discuss it when it starts. Have fun!
  18. Sorry, you'll just have to read the book. I will say though that I was NOT expecting it. Totally blew my mind.
  19. You can also get the ebook in the meantime, if you can't wait for it to ship.
  20. Wow, derp. That's what I get for not reading the entire other thread. XD; Sorry about that. I'm sure the staff can work it into our plans for the signing, though! Were you planning on just mailing the cards out?
  21. Will you be in the area at all the weekend before the event? A bunch of staffers will be camping out, so you could swing by and coordinate with us.
  22. I'll be arriving on Friday and camping out. If you were at Alloy, maybe you'll recognize my ginormous tent.
  23. So, we've been telling you all that we would have a read-only TWG archive up for your perusal. I'm happy to announce that that we've finally placed a link to it on the forums! You can find it as a redirect forum under the Related Works category. You can also click here to go straight there. Enjoy!
  24. I've dispatched Vice Admiral Chaos of the U.S.S. Inquisition to come to your aid. He will be arriving at your location from Deep Space Kredik Shaw shortly. Try to hold on until then.
  25. What is your status, Commander? Are you in need of backup?
