  1. Perhaps Nalan/Heleran were trying to draw out Kaladin by attempting to assassinate Amaram (Nalan may have been able to sense a surgebeinder in Amarams army, but not sure exactly who) However, Elana's comment makes sense as well: IMO, I think the true agenda of the skybreakers is not yet realized. Too many things going on to simply say they are only interested in eliminating surgebinders. Nalan is the Herald of justice.. I can see that he may feel justice in killing radiants in reaction to the recreance, and yet he has let some live (i.e Lift, Shallan -her mother made an attempt but not Heleran, he must have known about Jasnah) Maybe he is not powerful enough to kill all the surgebinders, which is why he must recruit others like Szeth. But I think his motives are much deeper than prolonging the desolation, especially now that it has finally arrived. Killing surgebinders, or certain surgebinders may fit in with his agenda, but it can't be all there is..
  2. Wasn't Shallan's brother, Heleran, said to be a Skybreaker? I think one of the Ghostbloods made this connection. To add to this: If Heleran was a skybreaker, and Amaram (whom he attempted to assinate) is not a surgebinder, wouldn't that expand the purpose of the skybreakers past merely trying to eliminate surgebinders? (Assuming he was on a skybreaker mission and not acting on his own agenda)
  3. Wasn't Shallan's brother, Heleran, said to be a Skybreaker? I think one of the Ghostbloods made this connection.
  4. Maybe a bit of a tangent here, but.. Doesn't Taravangian describe other 'large' spren in his chapter and perhaps in the Diagram epigraphs? I seem to remember him referring to at least 2 spren (names escape me right now). One having to do with the deathquotes, and the other was implicated in being able to interact with humans to some degree. I DID however correlate Taravangian's large spren to having more of a Odious nature than that of Honor. If Honor has large spren, than so must Odium- 'void spren', (listeners Gods?) Point being.. I don't believe that other than Stormfather, we can definitively personify the other 2 large spren that can bond with a bondsmith. And the epigraph referring to only 3 bondsmith at a time, does not imply that there can only be 3 at a time, rather that this was the custom. Infact, the quote implies there was a possibility to exceed 3 at a time, but was thought to be seditious. On the other hand, Stormfather can talk to Kaladin as well as Dalinar, which leads me to believe that Stormfather may be able to bond with multiple KR at a time as well. I love this topic, and all the input on this thread is well thought out. However, I do still think its too early to make any strong conclusions about which particular spren bonds with a bondsmith. This seems to me like a BS RAFO, but one I am anxious to RAFO.
  5. 1)Why would Jasnah go to Scadrial in the first place? It had to have been a mistake on her part. I believe that she even states to Hoid that she 'had to go somewhere quick in a pinch' or some such. But was Scardriel some random place, or had she been there before? 2)If this theory is applicable, would this mean that she can world hop on her own, independent of KR surging abilities? Or is world hopping actually a KR surge ability? Not sure if Elsecalling is referenced anywhere else in the series, but is that a surge, or a whole different type of magic?
  6. At the end of WoR, Kaladin is on his way back to Hearthstone at some point. Could he reconnect with Laral somehow? Could Laral be the equivalent of Dalinar's 'Shshshshsh' to more clearly define this 'Shadoladin' as a parallel to 'Navani Gavilar Dalinar'?
  7. It was my understanding that the Sunmaker was an Alethi king. The king that in fact ended the Hierarcracy (spelling?) However, this does not make Sunmaker the king, and Sunmaker the Herald (supposed) mutually exclusive. I have been absolutely intrigued on the hidden identities of the Heralds ever since I finished the book the 1st time, and this may actually fit. Its possible, however, going on some of the a fore mentioned theories that the Brightcaller was a Herald and his/her order was the Sunmakers, and the Sunmaker (Alethi King) was actually a KR, perhaps the last Sunmaker?
  8. @Meg Heard, I will be sensitive to this issue in the future. Just lazy when it comes to creating spoiler tags, but I will try harder in the future, promise. OK, ok, I just thought that you were the one who said chulls weren't greatshells in the first place so I was trying to not to sound condescending here to you or anyone else who had that interpretation. P.S. I hope I didn't get on your bad side, because I think a lot of what you post is intuitive and I agree w/ you on a lot of topics.
  9. @FlashWrogan I can accept that the greatshells were not fabricated, and that would most likely mean that they are natives of the planet. However, they do seem very rock like. Maybe they are a natural evolution of the planet, and perhaps Cultivation could have something to do with that evolution. Either way I feel that they were present at the times of the Desolations, if not directly involved than perhaps bystanders that got caught up in the battle. Maybe the same type of battles happened in the Desolations where both sides fought to either destroy the greatshells for power, or even that the Herlads and co. fought to protect them as they are supposed to have 'said' importance to the ecology of the planet. Hmmm, now theres a thought...
  10. Meg, thanks for answering my questions. As I am in the middle of my second reading of the book (going at a slower pace) I am sure I will get to the Meg-RY part eventually All this speculation on the Chasmfiends/pupating greatshells is leading me to ponder their origin. After looking at the link to the coppermind page on greatshells (chulls are considered greatshells here, but that may or may not be cannon) it reminded me of some important things: Greatshells have violet blood... In the prelude chapter, it is mentioned that Kalak saw 3 kinds of blood: red, orange, and violet. If I'm not mistaken Parshendi have orange blood. So, we know that during the Desolations humans, greatshells, and Parshendi (or some form of the Parshedi) fought during these battles. The real question is who fought against who? It is easy to assume that Humans fought against both other species. And this is probably right. If that then, why are the Parshendi now fighting the Chasmfiends (or pre-chasmfiends)? Here's a theory on that: If humans are from Yolen (or created from beings of Yolen i.e. Ati and Leras's creation on Scadrial) and are essentially aliens on Roshar, then perhaps the Parshendi and Greatshells are natives to Roshar -Meg you mentioned the Aimians, perhaps they were natives as well. Or, it is possible that these 2 species were created by the Shardholders on Roshar, but more specifically Odium was directly involved. It seems that there is a strong connection from both of these species to being originally wrought from stone. Greatshells: They create a crysalis- geological cocoon, they have a Gemstone as a heart, and so on.. (heck even the plant life seems very rock like) Parshendi: Marblized skin patterns, ability to create a carapace layer (not rock like, but so close to the crustaceans on the planet i.e. greatshells) We know that soulcasting can transform one type of matter to another, so that type of magic is feasable, if say someone or something changed rock, stone, crystal, etc. into a living being. Also, I believe that Sigzil mentioned a story of a Makabaki woman who used some type of magic to create her children from rocks. That being said, is it possible that the greatshells and/or Parshendi are living fabrications of geological substances? If this is true, than who would have created them and to what purpose? It seems that Odium may to fit into this equation somehow, based on the nature of the 2 species. Now, as for the Parshendi and their gods/God... Is it possible that they have forsaken their true god (Odium) because they have evolved into a more enlightened species? There were many religions/cultures in our own (Earth) history that had a vile and destructive nature (i.e. Mayan, Aztec, Babylonian, and I hope I'm not offending anyone here, and this is a stretch). Once these cultures became enlightened, either by choice or submission, they for the most part gave up their pagan or destructive beliefs and adopted more virtuous ideals. Could this be what has happened to the Parshendi in a way (I am basing this on BS's Eshonai reading, and am aware of a possible spoiler, but honestly this is SA forum not a WoK forum)? Could the Parshendi have come to the realization that their God/gods are of an evil (hateful) intent, and have chosen to forsake their religion? To me it seems that eventually they will become ally's with at least some of the righteous factions in this story. Perhaps the voidbringers are one of the forms of the Parshendi (sorry but Szeth mentioned the voidbringers having surgebinding qualities, so that leads me to believe that they are humanoid and sentient... not greatshells). And perhaps if the Parshendi are voidbringers, as Jasnah and Shallan believe (just because some characters believe one thing doesn't make it true, but in this it makes sense), then maybe the voidbringers will eventually become goodguys, this will throw a wrench into Odiums plans, and the true baddies will eventually be the 10 deaths, i.e. Thunderclasts, midnight essences, etc. I am completely aware that this theory is a HUGE tangent on the topic, it has most likely been discussed before (you guys are extremely sharp), and it doesn't really describe the purpose of the Chasmfiend pupation. But I believe that understanding the true nature of the Parshendi may be major key to realizing the importance to the Chasmfiend phenomenon. Feel free to poke as many holes in this as you all like... I'm not totally sold on any of this, its just specualtion, but if anyone has anything to add, or point out, it would be appreciated, as many minds are better than one in critical thinking and case evaluation.
  11. Also.. Is there a connection to the Parshendi calling the Chasmfiends their gods? But then attacking them like the Alethi do? What about a connection to the SA2 reading where BS explains that the Parshendi were wary of Gavilar bringing back there gods? Is that black gemstone that Szeth hid have anything to do with this all?
  12. Aside from from Chasmfiends, How many Greatshell species have been mentioned? 2, maybe 3? Whitespines (what the heck is that exactly?) Some aquatic ones (no name mentioned) And were Chulls classified as Greatshells? Anywho, was it mentioned somewhere that there were an extinct form of greatshells that were overhunted in some distant land to the east for their gemhearts? Do all greatshells have gemhearts? How long have gemhearts been in use in Roshar? Do you HAVE to have a gemheart to make a stormlight gem? Can they mine them? Are these even relevant questions?
  13. This makes sense. The ability to hold Stormlight like a surgebinder seems to me that it would enhance the Plate, and perhaps even the Blades as seen in Dalinar's visions. I'm not sure if all of your specifics are spot on, the process could be more simple or even more complex... but you seem to be on the right track.
  14. This is an old topic I know, but I had some thought along a similar path and I thought it best to avoid any possible necrothreads... That being said, First off, I think that these all are valid, well thought out points. I definitely like the Stone Shaman = Taln disciples theory a lot. And I can accept the possibility that Szeth does indeed carry Jezrien's blade or perhaps another honorblade, although it could be any number of things. My question is this: Does anyone see Szeth as an agent for Odium, even if unknowingly? Or perhaps, a KR type that has been corrupted. What does it really mean to be Truthless in that regard. Is that somehow ties to Shadesmar, where you seem to need truth to access? Are the blade and surgebinding skills part of a tie to Odium or Honor, or both? He mentions having dutiful honor binding him to his purpose, the will of his masters. But he also, is perceived as having uncontrollable hate. He even goes so far as to call himself 'hate' if I'm not mistaken. Tanavast mentions to Dalinar that if Odium chooses a champion it may be for the best. Im not implying that Szeth is said champion, but I do feel there is a connection between Szeth the Truthless and Odium. As already posted earlier, Szeth references the voidbringers and his 'punishment' demands that they don't exist, yet his honor demands they do. And it was also said that when he dies he will go back to the place that sounds a lot like Damnation (and where the Heralds would have to go after they die) Here an observation to that: So the Heralds are immortal... but hey can die in battle... What if... Szeth was once a Herald, heck even perhaps Jezrien. He dies somehow couple thousand years later. He goes to Damnation. Odium is like, "Hey buddy, you broke the Oathpact, now you mine!" He is then brought back to Roshar as Szeth (its a stretch I know, Szeth's a Shin and doesn't fit the description of a Herald). He has little knowledge of the past, kinda like Syl, yet knows things he shouldn't, like surgebinding. Maybe the reason he is called Truthless is because the Stone Shamans were awaiting the return of Taln, and instead they got a corrupted version of a Herald. Of course this is all based on speculation, and it all leads to more speculation about his assassinations and who is really behind them... To wrap it up... back on topic here.. What if his blade IS the 3rd kind of blade, but those blades were crafted by Odium, and if he WAS a Herald than his original blade is still in the SP somewhere being guarded by the Parshendi (only half serious there, but still..) Or maybe it is Jezrien's blade after all.. Who knows? Its fun to guess though!!!
  15. Wow! Thats sweet! Thanks Cheese. Dont know why that didn't pop up when I searched for the topic.
