Captain Coffee

I'm looking for something to scratch a very particular itch. Are there books you know of that feature vigilantes or superheroes like Zorro in a fantasy setting? It seems like there should be lots of that kind of thing, but I've done some digging and I'm not seeing much.

I loved it. I loved Hoid's voice, and the thrown in random Cosmere stuff. I thought that it really worked for both the completely uninitiated and for people who are really Invested in the Cosmere. To a new reader, the magic was silly fun, but I kept being like, "Oh, yeah. That totally would work." I loved that Tress perceived herself as normal. I loved that Hoid called out her calmness and thoughtfulness as the things that made her a unique heroine. The Dragon negotiation was amazing. Also, even though I read it digitally, the way they used the green, red, and black ink was so cool. The book is absolutely beautiful. I will have to get a physical copy.

I have wondered if Lumar is a planet that has been, for some reason, entirely moved into the cognitive realm. That could account for weird physics.

I'm not sure who the audience is, but I thought it was Kaladin for a while. It should be a deliberate Princess Bride parody with Hoid telling the story to a fully adult Kaladin who is trying to sleep.

I guessed it almost immediately when curses came up, and I remembered Tress thinking about princesses in stories. I was like, "Is Brandon going to have this girl kiss a rat to turn him back into Charlie?". But, as the story went on I started to doubt. By the end, I was assuming he was just a familiar, so I was surprised that I had originally been right.

I feel like SP 1 specifically calls out its own references. If you are aware of the Cosmere at all, you will get a lot. Like, the book often calls out what planets things come from by name.

This is all great advice, but Warbreaker is my favorite. I'd do that one.

And, I believe he said he would be making a video of it in addition to the written one.

I'd like to think that Vin could have merged them in Protection, which encompasses both Preservation and Ruin. Kelsier could eventually get to that too. I think Sazed could eventually, but it will take him longer because he is more chill

I had always read the "golden skin" line to mean they were tanned, but in a world where there are crab people and people who are red and white I probably should have taken that line more literally.

There are of course far more than these, and they shift. But, I thought a top 5 would be an interesting exercise. 1. Kaladin 2. Wax 3. Lightsong 4. Steris 5. Dalinar

Warbreaker is my favorite Cosmere book. I had trouble getting into it until Vivenna got to Hallendren. But, I struggled with the beginnings of all of the first few Cosmere books I read. I eventually started going back and forth between reading and listening to the audiobooks. It is a lot easier for me to listen to a few hundred pages of setup than to read it. I liked all the characters. I think Siri and Lightsong are fun to read, and the court intrigue/mystery is fun. I also liked Vivenna. She went to save her sister, and it was only crazy luck that Siri's marriage worked out so well. Neither Siri nor Vivenna had any reason to believe it would be a good thing. I think Vivenna is right that the economic system of Hallendren is exploitative, even if she is a little naive in her thinking about it. It does need to change, but her approach wasn't going to work. As for the sex thing, I was surprised how central sex was to the plot, but it didn't bother me. It seemed like Brandon was trying to stretch his ability to write situations like that with out doing anything he thought was personally wrong. I think it was an important thing for him to try. I've also heard people dislike that the battle at the end isn't shown, but I don't think that matters. Once the phantoms are activated, the end of the battle is a forgone conclusion.The politics, the love story, and the personal level combat are the real conclusion of the story. Also, I always assumed that Vasher and Vivenna ended up as a couple, so I was surprised that they didn't seem to be when we see them later. But, on a reread, that was my assumption, the text does not say it.

Whimsy is my top pick. I love coming up with a crazy idea with no practical purpose and seeing how it goes. Like, I was in a ginger bread house competition this weekend, and I convinced my team to make a historically accurate gingerbread cathedral (Well, graham cracker cathedral, really). Having my own planet to mess around on sounds fun, but also cruising around the Cosmere trolling other Shards sounds awesome. I like that it is morally neutral, so as long as I was careful, I don't think the power would bend me to do things I found objectionable. Or, Ruin. Seeing Kelsier and Wax as agents of ruin has changed my perspective on it. A good person with the shard of Ruin should not have their own planet. They should travel the Cosmere destroying unjust systems. Ruin as the Shard of Revolution sounds awesome. So, I either want to make weird stuff or mess with stuffy and/or evil powers. I learned something about myself today.
