I've read Mistborn Era 1 and 2, SA1-4, Elantris, Arcanum Unbounded, Warbreaker, White Sands (Prose), and Dawnshard I was not a biggest fan of Sarene or Spook, but their stories were interesting. I had no interest in Zane whatsoever.

Since you are always in free fall, all of the forces ballance out which creates the sensation of floating. You can create a similar effect inside the atmosphere by flying on a parabolic trajectory in a standard aircraft (look up "Vomit Comet")

Myth busters made a balloon out of lead foil! Ultimately, what you are saying is quite possible, it is just more difficult and less effective than the alternative. Airplanes and helicopters are faster and can fly much higher than any airship capable of useful payload. Now, if a society never figured out heavier than air flight or how to make effective internal combustion engines, that is a complete different story. - Mars
