  1. That... is not a bad solution. Thank you so much!
  2. (Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this!) I'm trying to find two copies of The Emperor's Soul, in Spanish, preferably paperback. So far, I've found pretty much every Sanderson title in Spanish *except* this one (even White Sand!). I'm not sure why my Google Fu has been so weak on this matter, but I'm running out of ideas. I'm located in the U.S., which might be part of the problem? Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks, all! Edit: the title translates as "El Alma del Emperador", if that helps.
  3. This EXACT point just jumped out at me. I believe Lift's metabolic conversion of Investiture is a result of her unique position relative to the Cognitive Realm, so it makes sense to me that there's a Cognitive aspect to the Royal Locks as well.
  4. Very good point! I wonder if it would be the same if the Returned tried to completely suppress their divine Breath, and were otherwise drab. Or would "completely" suppressing a Divine Breath just kill them outright?
  5. This seems to touch on some of the finer points of how Identity works. I agree that BioChroma seems to have some unique properties in this regard. Does a Breath "remember" its person of origin? If I give my Breath to someone else, and then they give it back, is there any difference in how it would function? I could see something inherent to the mechanics of BioChroma "re-keying" a Breath whenever it's passed to another living being, allowing the recipient to use it without the normal Identity-related restrictions. Similarly, it wouldn't surprise me if attributes stored in a Breath were only accessible to the one who originally stored them, even if the Breath itself could be used for all standard BioChromatic purposes without being affected by the stored attributes. This would get pretty messy, if one stored in a Breath, gave it away to someone who already held one or more other Breaths, and then needed it back. Unless storing something in a Breath assigns it some kind of Investiture meta-tag, it might become virtually impossible to track where that specific Breath ends up. I would LOVE to see some kind of infographic showing the relative Investiture capacities for various vessels. A metalmind of X% purity [metal], a sphere of [gemstone] [X% cut perfection], [quantity] of Taldain sand, one Breath, etc.
  6. Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for, thanks! That last question is going to drive me nuts, though xD Edit: Arsteel, possibly?
  7. Been meaning to ask this to Brandon directly, but then I realized I could probably just post it here and get some great feedback! Does the process of Returning affect the subject's Identity (in the realmatic/investiture sense)? If, hypothetically, a feruchemist were to store something in a metalmind, then died and Returned, would they be still be able to tap that same metalmind? Or would their Identity have changed, making them essentially "unkeyed" from it? Similarly, if a Returned became a feruchemist and stored something, would that metalmind be inherently unkeyed?
  8. So I just finished my....Nth+1 reread of Warbreaker, and for some reason I had a completely new theory (wild conjecture) pop up in my brain about Vasher. (Disclaimer: I am relying on personal memory of some things that I'm pretty sure have been confirmed via WoB, but I haven't taken the time to track them all down. Links to confirm or disprove anything I posit are welcome and appreciated!) . . . So Vasher is a pretty accomplished and knowledgeable guy. One of the Five Scholars, Returned, and a worldhopper. As one of Nalthis' Five Scholars, he's extremely well-versed in the mechanics of Awakening and BioChroma. As of Warbreaker, he and Shashara are the only ones known to have created a BoiChromatic Entity Type 4 (Nightblood), ever. Khalad's Phantoms are also a pretty noteworthy accomplishment. He may not be the best teacher (yet), but he clearly understands the subject, and probably figures out quite a lot intuitively when he's actually trying to break new ground. As a Returned, we know he's hundreds of years old, and currently functionally immortal. However, he still doesn't remember anything from before his Return. This...opens up a LOT of possibilities. As a worldhopper, we know he has knowledge of the greater Cosmere, experience studying and utilizing other forms of investiture (see Zahel living on Roshar and surviving off of Stormlight instead of requiring a weekly Breath infusion), and has even attempting to mimic foreign magic systems via Awakening (Nightblood being based on a shardblade). To that last point in particular, we know he was a worldhopper before the events of Warbreaker. Now, let's put aside Vasher for a moment and take a quick look at Lightsong the Bold. At the climax of Warbreaker, Lightsong's high priest Llarimar gives Lightsong a complete, unabridged info dump about his former life - something that is absolutely forbidden by the tenets of their religion. But it serves to prove that there's nothing actually preventing Returned from obtaining this knowledge, beyond custom. Without the religious restrictions in place, there's nothing stopping a Returned from reacquainting themselves with their past lives (by being informed by others...or perhaps by studying the extensive notes of their life's work that a great scientific mind would undoubtedly have kept?!) Back to Vasher. The Iridescent Tones did not exist at the time of his Return, so it's entirely possible that he reacquired knowledge from his past life. At the end of Warbreaker, he tells Vivenna that he does not remember anything from before his Return, and he also promised her early in their relationship that he would never lie to her. I'm actually inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was being sincere about never lying to her outright...however, I could definitely see him misleading her with such a semantic loophole, and also being hesitant to share such information with her at that time. So what does all this mean? Well, what if Vasher had become Cosmere-aware before his Return? What's to say he hadn't already worldhopped before then? That he was even a "normal" human before then? Did he have a standard human lifespan? Did he possess other forms of Investiture? It might explain his significant talent for exploring the mechanics of Awakening, or his willingness to attempt emulating foreign magic. Could he have been around for other major pre-Warbreaker events? Heck, could he have been present for the Shattering? Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
  9. I think this is a fantastic notion! If true, it certainly bears huge ramifications for the Cosmere, in terms of future planning by Rayse/Odium, Hoid, and any other "high level" players.
  10. Oh, good call. I love that song, and it is a good fit
  11. You, sir, are amazing! Thank you so much, that's prezactly what I was looking for
  12. I was recently struck by a Completely Awesome Brilliant Idea for a small personal project. It requires high-quality images of various characters (and possibly locations?) from the Cosmere books. I'd prefer anything that is considered "canon", if there is such a thing (the book covers?). Google image search is proving a little less helpful than originally expected. Would anyone mind pointing me towards any such images? Any and all direction will be greatly appreciated!
  13. On the way to work today, I heard a song on the radio. By the end of the first verse, it had sparked a really strong "skaa" vibe in my brain, evoking images of the downtrodden masses (and maybe a hint of the skaa rebellion's spark just starting to heat up...) that really fit with my own vision of the book when I first read it. This got me thinking about what the "soundtrack" of Mistborn would sound like, if it were stitched together from existing songs. What sort of bad-chull tune is playing when Kelsier strolls out of the Mist to eradicate an entire manor house of nobility at the end of the first prologue? What melancholy piece might give us a glimpse into Sazed's heartbreaking crisis of faith after the Siege of Luthadel? I'd love to put together soundtracks (of indeterminate length) that could re-tell Brandon's stories. Obviously this is an extremely subjective undertaking, but I'd bet there are at least a few songs out there that would resonate with the majority of the 17S community. If nothing else, it might be a fun group project/game, no? The only "rule" that I came up with is "no songs from actual musicals". It just feels too much like cheating to me, but who knows, maybe I'd change my mind if presented with a really good example. (Similarly, non-lyrical pieces strike me as a bit too abstract and open to individual interpretation for this sort of thing. But again, I could absolutely be proven wrong!) What say you, 17S folk? What do the soundtracks of the Cosmere sound like? Edit: I didn't realize the forums had thematically appropriate swear filters. Laughing so much over "bad-chull"
