There is something incredibly freeing and also heart-wrenching about giving away books.
In other news, I still have an overflow pile of books and one of the supports for one of the boards in the bookshelf is missing.
-
I rode my bike today, for the first time in months! It was incredibly cold and I got kinda tired, but it was so awesome! And I got a bunch of random books from the library! It's like browsing!

So, Shard, I have a question.
How do you people?
I realize that that might not be the best question to ask on a site full of bookworms, but seriously. How do you:
- Talk to people outside of when you have to (for a project, job, etc.)
- Make friends
- Maintain friendships
I'm at a loss.
SpoilerPlease help, I have two weeks to figure this out.

Figure out what people like and ask them about it. Truthless of Shinovar likes rock climbing. So if you ask him about it, he'll talk about it. If they ask you a question, respond. Depending on how they stand - it can get complicated - talk long or talk short then ask another question about them.
-
I have no idea. Sorry.
why did i even respond -
1. Small Talk: fake it til you make it. Every time I’m forced to make small talk with someone I don’t really know, it’s just, literal fight or flight response. Just ultimate panic mode. But you just have to keep smiling and asking/answering questions. Also, let me introduce you to the magic words “let me let you go.” Easiest exit out of a conversation ever, especially phone calls.
2. make friends: extracurricular activities work pretty well for this. Common interests and all that.
3. maintain friends: Don’t be a jerk, don’t be friends with jerks, don’t actively avoid them or go months without talking.

join discord -
Y'know, that's not a bad idea. Joining an RP. My parents won't let me join discord.
Someone give me details about Siren's Call? Please?
-
Post on there and we can discuss it on the thread.

Status: I figured out how to get myself to read The Wheel of Time! The trick is to look at a bunch of fanart, be intrigued, and then remember you have to return the book to the library soon.
Anyway, are there some good summaries for book one? I don't remember much, and I'm a little lost.
How much do I not remember? I don't remember the name of book one. That's how lost I am.
-
I'm sure that one of y'all knows how to do this.
My Chromebook got tetchy and stopped letting me use my earbuds until I let it update. And now I can't figure out how to open things in new tabs with my stylus. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix that?
Also my dog ate a pincushion. Is this what adulting feels like?

After hammering out the first verse of 'Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory': I never said I was a good singer, just that I was enthusiastic.
Also, adding eighths to the Star-Spangled Banner is fun.
-
My eyes are itching really bad because it's allergy season, and all I can think about is the etymology of words for vehicles. Obviously carriage - horseless carriage - car, but what about trailer? Van? Truck? Where'd those come from?

-
YES
-
car (and carriage, etc) probably came from carrus (meaning cart)
-
I knew cart fit in there somewhere, but I wasn't sure how.

2,000 posts!
Did I stay up a little late on purpose just to hit this?
SpoilerNo. What made you think that?

I don't think we need to derail every single update where someone hits a marker by summoning me? Let's maaybe tone that down a little

Today, I had a great idea. A nativity, but made out of the random figurines I've collected.
This is an excuse to collect stuff. You can make me recognize that I'm a magpie, but you can't make me stop.

Nope. I guess I third.
-
I collect hotel pens and bouncy balls. And I used to collect rocks.
I guess I also collect books, but I actually use those. -
Lol, I collect Brandon Sanderson books. But so far I only have the first Mistborn era and books 1-4 in The Stormlight Archive.

Question: what do you call a group of doctors?
Followup: How many doctors does it take to make a bevy of doctors?

In the past couple days, I've gone up a good 150 posts.
Thanks, FOTT!
I may actually hit 2,000 before my Shardiversary at this rate.
Also, I've been listening to Sabaton a lot, and it's great, until I try to sleep, and then I have history-based metal music stuck in my head.

Umm... *MAGIC*
I don't know, it's just natural for me. I like to involve myself in conversations and make friends, plus my RP characters tend to have the same quality.
So for my RPs I guess it's my FOMO manifesting itself... in the way I play the RP characters.
It's convoluted, but it's the best explanation I can come up with on the spot.
-
Makes sense.
-
*thumbs up*
Yeah... I guess that's it? I might have to come back to this.

Last night, the ongoing family joke of trying to get me to add hot sauce to anything continued. (I don't like it and won't put it on anything.)
I had the irrational urge to just grab and drink the stuff.
Where did that even come from?
- Show previous comments 1 more
-
That is weird... Maybe it came from curiosity? Or to prove yourself? Who knows!
-
Of course not. I don't want to die of sudden pepper overload.

But Vapor'll add it to anything.

My dog: barks at her big brother during Super Bowl
Me: kicks both outside to settle grievances
They come back in, and what does she do? Bark at her brother again. They were both sent outside during all songs for this reason.
Also she's never dealt with stairs before, it's hilarious, she has no idea what to do.

I was testing my new desk layout, and I drew my Fellowship characters! I think the pencil came through pretty well. This isn't exactly how they look, but it's an idea.
I was gonna draw Martin drawing a rune, but I for some reason was thinking in monochrome and colored the scars black.
A note, the black ink on Martin's jacket is where he's ripped patches off.

Maybe one day she'll come back.

Hey, we're gonna find her in Side Tales!

Really? Neat!

You know that feeling when you've tried everything and it still doesn't work?
Yeah, I think it's uncontained rage and technology brings headaches.

oof I'm sorry

Okay, think about this for a second.
The Fall of Numenor, but combine it with The Illiad.
I don't know, I just woke up with it.

This is kind of stupid. And I doubt many people will see it. But I want, and need, to say this.
I've made myself a persona, on and off the Shard, that is built on being kind. On being supportive. On being quiet, and a little bit naive, and a little bit disconnected from the world. And that quietness and naivete and disconnect is real. I am that person. The problem is, being that person can be exhausting.
I want to be a kind person, and I try to be. Making someone's day brighter is something I love doing. But it creates a sort of stained-glass window effect. People see what I want them to see, because it's easier. It's easier for me to be the happy, smiling person who puts a smile on someone's face when they need it most, than to say 'hey, I could really use something funny or sweet or silly right now'.
It's tiring. It's isolating. And when it comes to a head, I feel stuck behind the pretty colored glass that I made.
And that's where I am now. It's rough. But I'm done. I can't keep pretending that everything is perfect in my life. Sometimes I feel that way. My family is great. My situation in life is good. So I feel like I shouldn't say anything, even when I can, because there are other people who need the support more, who don't have what I'm so lucky to have.
One of the things I'm lucky to have is the Shard. There have been countless times where I've been down, and tired, and all I want to do is scream into the forest and then sleep for a week, and I run across a goofy comment in Sharder One-liners, or a interesting tidbit in a book discussion board, or a especially beautiful piece of fanart, or a meme that makes me crack up.
It's not a bad think to be supportive, and I know that. But what I have to learn is how to be supported.
So thank you. You all are amazing, amazing people.
