  1. A while back I said I might be done with the Shard.  Well, this is my official statement of that.  I had good times on here with y'all, but it's time for me to move on.  I do have a tumblr, but since it's almost completely Formula One, I won't mention it here.

    Peace out, everyone.

  2. 'It's cheaper at Barnes and Noble' said no one ever, except me buying the Vivere album from there because I 'don't have enough songs with lyrics on my iPod', completely ignoring the fact that I still won't be on aux because most people around here like lyrics they can understand, which means not Romance languages.

That is all, the Spotify rant will wait for another day.

YAY! I LOVE BARNES AND NOBLE! It's literally my favorite store. I went there yesterday :]

  3. I'm trying to brute force my sleep schedule back into something that will let me wake up early with little consequence (this is also blamable on my new Formula One interest) and it's so boring.  Now I'm spending three hours laying there doing nothing instead of one.

Also I watched Pompeii last night.  Solid volcano, excellent plot, in that it's very easy to say 'no it didn't, ignore that last bit'.

  4. New Interest: Formula One

...How did we get here.  I don't even like driving my own car (iPhone crylaugh emoji that the Shard doesn't have a sibling of)

Great question.  Would you believe me if I said a roundabout journey from The Silmarillion?

To be honest I have very little idea what's going on, but that's to be expected for being a week into an interest, for me at least.

  5. Several things:

    • If you have the chance, and you haven't been, go to Yellowstone.  That was the fricken coolest.  200% increase in geysers seen, 400% for bears seen in wild, just neat geothermal things (fumaroles!)  And also the colors.  Holy cow, there's so many of them, no wonder artists love that place.
    • The fact that I can't logic my mental health using controlled, manipulated, and responding variables is actually kinda annoying, but eh.  At least the picture's getting cohesive?
    • Oppenheimer's coming out, and I am actually remarkably excited.  I'm not usually big on movies, it's very hard for me to be comfortable watching one the first time, so I usually don't.  But I really want to see this one.
    • I'm currently weirdly at peace with the fact that I have very few people who I am in regular contact with (by which I mean go and do things, hanging out) and I don't know what to do with it, cause I'm in that weird spot where most of my friends are just enough older than me that they're leaving and I'm not yet, so on one hand, what's the point?  On the other, I know I need interaction, it's just exhausting to seek it out because it doesn't come naturally in the slightest.
    • The Sun Eater is still a very good book series, I just reread book three and loved it.
    • I have three Secret Projects on hold right now, and have read none of them, which is utterly hilarious to me (Tress is soon, though)
    • I know I'm barely active on here at all anymore, but I think I'm going to be less so.  Tbh the wider internet kinda scares me (Not y'all, the Shard is lovely) and I really need to double down on figuring out how to be a functioning, healthy member of society before I spread my wings and immediately spiral into tragedy.  I'll still peek in occasionally.  And I like talking with y'all.  The trouble is that I forgot how to do that, I think, and relearning is something I have to do IRL so I can carry that over.

Catch you on the flip side!

  6. So, I was browsing the library website, as one does.  And I was struck by a thought.

Stated quickly, the most recent three trends in particularly YA literature (that I am aware of) have been paranormal romance, dystopia, and fae.  What do you think the next one will be?

I'm getting the feeling it's going to be retellings of Greek mythology.  I've seen a surprising amount of those cropping up.  But what do y'all think?

      Para Romance: Bcos Twilight

      Dystopia: Bcos Hunger Games

      Fae: Bcos Brando Mull

If it's Greek Mythology then it's because the people who grew up on Riordan are starting to write now. Given Sanderson's unprecedented impact on the fantasy community I can see a lot of Hard Magic + Hard Worldbuilding being the next big thing. I can also see a lot of shounen-style novels cropping up with the advent of popular animes like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan.

    3. DramaQueen

      DramaQueen

I think the Rick Riordan things would be classified more as Children's Literature than YA.

    4. Spren of Kindness

      Spren of Kindness

I was never big on Percy Jackson, so I can't be certain, but I was under the impression that PJ and Rick Riordan were more middle grade. (As Queen pointed out while I was writing this)  But that actually dovetails quite neatly into Fadran's point!

  7. I got a new plant, and I'm very happy about it, because this one can live on my windowsill.

I really like plants, guys, they make me very happy :D  I mean, it's so nice to have green things around!

  8. Prom poetry?  Nah, pickup poetry.  A collection of poems about roadside frustrations.  Selections include:

A Roundabout Would Really Improve This Intersection, Do You Really Need That Big A Truck?, and Please Don't Let My Manual Roll Back On This Hill Into The Guy Tailgating Me.

Coming soon, to an esoteric cashless inner-city bookstore two hundred miles from you.

  9. Guys

    Guys I'm kinda disappointed

My top sci-fi series, The Sun Eater, had a Kickstarter for a special edition of the first book.  It went live yesterday.  I found out today.  There were only 500 physical copies because the original publisher would only allow that many.  They all sold out in the first hour.

And that cover art is really pretty, folks.  I'm a sucker for pretty cover art.

But this is also really cool, because I like seeing this guy succeed, he's pretty darn talented and it's always cool to see someone's work do well.

Anyway, it's a pretty neat series.  Y'all should check it out if you like epic sci-fi tragedies

  11. So, my current story writing method is to hand write, and then type what ensues, right?  It helps me pace things better.

Here's the thing.  Sometimes, I don't want to type.  Sometimes, I get in the groove, I understand the vibe, the words fairly spill out, I've got such a good grasp on the characters.  And then, all of a sudden, I have twenty pages I need to type.

That would all be well and good, I can put on some music and spend a couple hours laying on the floor typing.

Except I type really aggressively.  Extremely so.  So I'm honestly surprised it took so long to find out that the floor is thin enough that my dad had to ask me to stop because he could hear it down below.

In other news, I think this is the first thing I've written where I went to check the Geneva Conventions just to see if I was making my character as bad as I mean for him to be.

That could be a funny video game character, actually - The Librarian.  Individual of indeterminate age who says cryptic/strange things occasionally.  Your only warning of their approach is the sound of furiously clacking keys growing louder

  12. If I had a nickel for every time the same person asked me if I'm Amish, I would have two nickels.  Which isn't a lot, but you would have thought he would learn after the first time.

  14. It frustrates me so much when I figure out exactly how all my problems connect and the vocabulary to explain not only the problems, but how they connect, and then that moment of understanding fades and I'm back at square one.

Maybe I need a string board.  Cause that would definitely not cause some people to question the validity of my statements that 'actually, I'm doing pretty good right now', y'know?

Anyway, I'm really glad that it's almost Christmas and that therefore, Christmas Eve candelight service is tomorrow, and that may actually be my favorite part of the holiday.

Not having school is also really nice though, I need recovery time.  I mean, I like learning, but this environment is not my favorite way to do it.

  15. Once upon a time, there was a girl who liked to write.

She had been telling stories for a very long time, and she had always had an active imagination, even if she was very quiet around most people.  When she was twelve, she actually started writing and even completing some of her stories.  It was exciting; and it was fun.

And then a lot of things happened.  The world.  School.  Her own mind.

For years, she didn't manage to complete anything she started writing, and she was barely writing at all.  The fun was gone, replaced by worry that one misstep could ruin everything, and make people hate her.  The excitement was gone, too.

It's been a long time since I cracked ten thousand words on anything.  I finished a short story a few months ago, the first thing I had finished in years.  That didn't even break five thousand.  I had lost it.  I'm still not sure what 'it' was, but it was gone.  Writing had lost it's light for me, and no surprise.  I was going through some pretty bad years, and honestly, they probably aren't over, because that's life.

But I think it's getting better.

I didn't just hit ten thousand words.  I've hit fifteen.  And I'm nowhere near done.

I don't know what changed.  Strike that.  I know one thing that's changed.  I stopped caring what other people were going to think of how I put together this silly language we call English.  But why did that change?  I have no idea.  I've been trying and praying for years, and I think maybe I was starting to think that I was never going to love writing again.

    Turns out, that's not true.

This is going to sound cheesy as all getout, but here goes anyway.  Life gets better.  The trick is, it's really hard to make that happen on your own.  You need help.  And that can be hard too.  But it's so worth it.

I'm writing again.  And that's a small thing, but it's also a pretty big thing, because I'm writing again.  And it feels really good.

    1. DramaQueen

      DramaQueen

Oh, yay! I'm seriously so happy for you, that's wonderful.

  16. Ah, writing.  In which I stare at a Google Doc for ten seconds with the wheels spinning, but without any traction, and then slink off to Google what the door of a truck bed is called.

Tailgate.  The word I wanted was tailgate.

I'm really glad that scene's over, though.

  17. This is a complaint against spellcheck, which seems to think I need to pick a side on British and American English.  I'll use 'grey' and 'demeanour' followed immediately by 'honor' and 'labor' all I want, thanks.

I don't even know when I started mixing them, though.  That's something I'll wonder about for a while.

  19. I got a bunch of my dad's old CDs today.  I'm so happy!  Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and assorted others, including Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition and Night On Bald Mountain!

Plus, the soundtracks to The Phantom Menace, Apollo 13, and Gettysburg, and the original cast recordings of Phantom of The Opera and Les Miserables.  Today is a good day, indeed!

  20. So my family's watching Andor.

I now have a deep desire for a show about a young woman who works in a laundromat who gets involved with the rebellion/revolution, but like.  In a tangential way.  Witnesses uprisings and protests and all that, sees the city get more dystopian and tense over time, but also, still works at the laundromat for basically the whole show, and the plot is more focused on the effects of the rebellion on the main cast than actually overthrowing anything.

    Who's with me?

    1. Turtle

      Turtle

I’m with you this sounds awesome- I love side stories like this where you get to really see the way the story’s events affect people outside of the main conflict. Honestly I think the lack of stuff like this is a big part of why the sequels weren’t great for me

i think the flip side to this would be a young woman working in mid level coruscant during end of the old republic and seeing how that corruption was already there and watching as the already incredibly dystopian planet became worse and worse, and just hoping there wouldn’t be any annoying customers at the laundromat

  22. The absolute whiplash I felt when I went to the next song on my required listening playlist for my music class, and it was Fur Elise, by Ludwig von Beethoven (190 songs I have to know the names and composers of, ah!) and it was primarily flute.

It was actually a pretty neat version, I'm just used to Fur Elise being For Piano, it just is.

  23. So, I watched The Rings of Power, and in the middle of Episode Two, the power went out, and it was already late and uncomfortably warm without fans running, so we didn't finish, and then yesterday I went to see Top Gun: Maverick again, so it's not until today that I finished the two episodes out so far.

Not really spoilers below, but I don't want my thoughts to color what other people might think going in if they haven't seen it.

    Spoiler

I dunno, folks.  I walked away from my interrupted viewing feeling middle-of-the-road, but now I've started documenting my thoughts in a Google Doc, and I apparently have a lot of negatives.  I also have three pages of thoughts, from two episodes, and I'm not done with writing about episode two.

Will anyone ever see those notes?  Probably not, since I'm not going to do a status update for every episode, and most likely no one wants a ten to twenty page dossier from a pretentious bird.  But I'll have them.

Anyway.  There were some things I liked.  There were some things I didn't like.  I wrote the words 'bootleg Aegnor and Andreth' which I really never thought was a phrase that would come about.  Many explanations were given to family members who lovingly tolerated the excessive amounts of lore I delivered.  To be fair, they did actually ask.

  24. Approximately twenty-five hours ago, I was driving down a pretty normal town street.  Two lanes, one for each direction.  There's cars behind me, there's a car approaching in the other lane.  And behind that car, lo and behold, what do I see but a motorized skateboard and the helmeted rider upon it, coming down the road.  And he was doing the speed limit too, which seems quite fast compared to other skateboards I've seen.

That was weird.  I looked it up and it was legal 'n everything, but you really don't see that most days around here.
