    If the afternoon is called the afternoon, then why isn’t the morning called the beforenoon?!

      English language does care about pronunciation. If the pronunciation starts with a vowel sound, you say 'an.' If it doesn't, then it starts with 'a.' For example:

      "Unicorn" starts with the "y" sound--a consonant sound. And no, don't get all elementary-school on me about how y is technically a vowel sometimes. It isn't in this case and I'm not putting up with that scud.

      "One" starts with a "w" sound--also a consonate. It'd be "a one-sided argument," not "an one-sided argument."
