    Doll Customizing

I'm customizing a series of Monster High/Ever After High dolls to be characters from the Stormlight Archive! Currently I'm working on Adolin Maya Renarin Kaladin I have plans for Shallan Veil Jasnah I also have a Funko Pop that I intend to make into Dalinar

This is made from just cheap Daiso (Japanese dollar store) UV resin, but the mold-making material is top-of-the-line. Not all of the fingers came out quite right, but that's because of bubbles and can be fixed with the proper technique. Now I just have to figure out how I'm making the wrist joint. Still, crystal hands! I'll probably make longer nails from clear bits of plastic straw and glue them to the tips to make them even more like claws.

Because I like to make things hard for myself, I'm playing around with casting Maya's hands out of clear resin, to make them look like they're made of crystal like in the books. This early test run came out much better than I had any reason to expect!

Party in the front, business in the back.

I really like how it came out.

Renarin's hair from the side. I like to think Adolin takes him to the best barber in the war camps and talks him up and this is always the inevitable result.

The poor boy. He's doing the best he can.

Starting on Kaladin's wig! Gotta glue those wefts underneath the cap so I can pull the hair back enough to show off his brands without revealing the underside. I think he looks very bishonen atm. Eat your heart out, Adolin.
  9. Thanks! I'm kind of working off these images by beanclam for inspiration.
  10. This is the video I'm mostly working from: This woman makes the most incredible shoes for Monster High dolls, mostly for girls. Check her out~!
  11. You should see the tutorials on YouTube that I'm working from! I stand on the shoulders of giants.

Adolin's wig is almost done! I might try taming it a bit so he looks less like an anime character, but that's pretty accurate to how I picture him, personally.

I made her a little dress so she wouldn't be all naked lol. It's just a placeholder for now, but the cloth's a really good texture and with some painting and detailing it should look pretty great. I'm so happy with the way the new crystals look. The sharp geometric lines contrast nicely with the organic forms of the body and when I add more vines it should look like they're growing out of her.

I really like the way the paint job brought out the texture of the body; it goes a long way to making it easy for me to make her look organic.

They look like rocks rather than crystals, even though they're real quartz! XD I think I'm going to just go with some tacky crystal beads and really play it up.
  16. Unfortunately, they're smooth and opaque enough that they just look like rocks and not "crystals". So I think I'll return both sets and go with some cheap acrylic beads that will really sparkle and jut out appropriately. But I learned a lot on this first pass! Gotta play to the back of the room, as they say.
  17. So Wyndle is described as being made of living vines speckled with smooth flecks of quartz, while Maya is made of dead vines with crystal hands. Do you suppose she also has crystals amid her vines? How big are they? Are they also smooth, or are they jagged? Tell me your mental picture of what they look like!
  18. I'm kind of using this gallery to post process pictures, partly because there are a lot of small decisions along the way and I'm looking for other people's opinions to help me make up my mind!

Everyone's favorite deadeye cultivationspren, or the start of one, anyway. I'm so pleased with how the wood texture of her body looks, and I plan to paint it a little to bring out the effect even more. (Her head and hands come from a Howleen Monster High doll, while her body is from Ever After High's Cedar Woods.) To hide some of the "pegs" and make her a proper cultivationspren, I'm going to add some crystals, but I'm going back and forth on whether to use the small pink quartz (which are more book-accurate) or the big blue ones (which are more dramatic). What do you think?
  20. That's the danger of doll modding lol. Making a doll's wig cap, for instance, requires wrapping their head in plastic, covering that with a piece of scrap cloth fastened around the neck and face with rubber bands, and painting it with layers of glue to make it stiff. I don't put any clothes on them while I do it because I don't want the clothes getting glue on them, which is harder to clean up than hard plastic, and my husband generally complains...

Papier-mâché boot bases modeled by the doll who will be Shallan, because none of the boys can fit into them right now.
  22. From the album: Doll Customizing

Papier-mâché boot bases, with toe last in the foreground. These will help me make the patterns I'll be cutting out of fake leather and stitching/gluing together!

Wefts to make Adolin's much-celebrated hair. I'm still working out what percentage of black streaks I want to add in. They're a touch more yellow than blonde, but these are the colors I had on hand, and I don't want to lose momentum.
