  1. If you read Elantris and Warbreaker and half of Mistborn, you are pretty much fully cosmere aware anyways. The only books you would have missed out on are: The Emperor's Soul (Elantris novella, almost no cosmere information) Last part of mistborn you didn't read which gets pretty cosmere heavy in the third book, but not really related to SA directly. Alloy of Law is pretty light on advancing any cosmere storylines. Steelheart, Rithmatist and all his YA stuff are not cosmere.
  2. I agree that Nightwatcher is probably to Cultivation what Stormfather is to Honor. Evidence for this seems to be that Lift's spren refers to a mother who people can visit and grants boons in the same way as Syl speaks of the Stormfather as her father. However i tend to think that Bondsmiths are all bound to the Stormfather as the quote: would simply be "Their spren were understood to be specific" otherwise. And also I tend to interpret 3 to be a standard number, not really a max. As for the stormfather surviving, I think it has to be either his reluctance to grant shards/become a shard, or he abandoned his bondsmiths after some event believing all is lost like he currently does, possibly Honor's death? I tend to think its the former though
  3. I assumed Wyndle was of Cultivation because the way he talks about his mother, while also mentioning that 'He' is gone and that is why he thinks 'She' has given up on humanity. Whether honorspren are a type of spren or more of a title, maybe different types of spren argue over the title, because it makes them seem closer to their 'Father' or more pure of his intent?
  4. Ah, i hadn't read the Ym interlude. And i have heard that there is a stoneward in the Starfall chapter but rereading it i am not seeing any specific evidence? Am I missing something or is this from WoB? Either way it could be a majority thing, or more likely nothing at all.
  5. I believe Marianmi is correct. The power itself is not related to the shard's intent (Ironpulling, Lift's friction) but more how the basis of the investiture works. I believe Sazed tweak was to make snapping easier, which has no affect on the powers themselves. As far as other splits are concerned I took a closer look at the Radiant Chart. First the chart is pretty clearly split between male (top) and female (bottom). As far as i know every surgebinder we have seen so far falls into an Order with a leader of their respective gender. Further, it would seem male order's dominate physical heavy surges (Pressure, Gravity, Division etc) whereas Female orders dominate more cognitive surges (Transformation, Illumination, Growth, Travel depending on how it works). I thought this was a curious coincidence because of how Alethi gender roles play out. Women are more focused on scholarly pursuits from philosophy to engineering compared to almost all the Men we meet are either warriors or physical tradesmen of some kind. Maybe this is due to historical KR Order focuses? In fact an argument could be made that as you go from upper right to lower left in either direction surges go from physical to cognitive (this means there are some cognitive/physical overlaps with genders, which makes sense because I don't think Brandon would make that a clear cut distinction but rather that maybe one gender is more predisposed to perform surges relating to one realm versus the other). Lastly, the growth division connection again depends on how division is performed as it could overlap with the idea of either Entropy or Vibration (stealing this! better term IMO)
  6. Thanks for everyone's replies, gives me a lot more ideas and I'll write up something longer later today. Stasis is a very interesting idea, also maybe growth is a kind of temporal affect? One surge speeds up time around an object...the other slows time? Not sure how that fits into growths healing.
  7. Surgebinding is just the act of using any surge right? The sticking together of two objects is a Full Lashing. Hoser as far as the relations I am thinking of how the surges are used, rather than the outcome which it appears you are comparing. As far as reaching on a few couples, travel-gravity remains to be seen and very well could not fit at all. It really depends on how the travel is performed. Is it a quick trip through Shadesmar? Is it some high speed flying? Are they spinning the world and staying still!?!? (no, they are not) As far as pressure and friction being related rather than division, think of how the surges are performed, not the outcome. You aren't really combining two things with atmospheric pressure, but making a forceful bond that makes moving them in relation to each other very difficult, whereas friction is making movement between two objects much easier. Division used by Skybreakers and Dustbringers we have only seen the affects of in the prologue and it seems to really be tearing things apart and breaking them down (smoldering rocks) where growth used by Lift with the seeds is controlling (possibly very intricately) how something grows and forms. Obviously if one couple doesn't work the whole theory is bust, so i think it depends on how travel works, which hopefully we will discover with the information to come in WoR on Elsecallers. Also thank you for the responses! Lastly I realize Explorer's are an unlikely KR order, but do we have evidence that Explorer isn't one of the last unknown Radiant orders? Can parshendi be KR? One order that is unknown has Travel and the spot I am throwing dissipation in, so I thought Explorer would fit well. The name seems off though obviously compared to the compound names of all the others. Spiritmovers? Phaseshifters? Moverdudes?
  8. So after reading the Lift excerpt I took a closer look at the KR and the surges like I assume most people did. Now we all know how Brandon likes his magic ordered. And taking a closer look at the surges i tried to make a little more sense out of them and here were my thoughts (sorry if this has been shared before). Like allomantic metals, i think each surge has a companion that it is opposite to in intent. Growth-Division Pretty straightforward, one controls creation the other is most likely more destructive Illumination-Transformation One deals with changing something entirely versus changing appearances Friction-Pressure One makes someone (possibly objects they invest into as well?) very slick whereas the other can make things stick together Travel-Gravity This one might be more of a reach, hard to tell as how travel works is pretty unknown, but I think the correlation is a safe bet. Really all depends on how Travel is performed. So this leaves us Surface Tension or whatever he decides to call it. My understanding of what this would do is strengthening a material, making it more rigid (possibly used in the creation of blades and shards?). The opposite of this would be a surge which I am going to call Vibration (credit to Count for the better name). I think this would work one of two ways. 1) Vibrating a materials or one's own atoms so that someone could pass through an object. 2) Making a material more brittle, which could be used to destroy armor, or quickly create tunnels or escape routes (even though transformation could do this as well in a different way) . Now correct me if I'm wrong but dissipation would be used by Stonewarders and possibly Explorers if that is an Order. Explorers this would make sense, as they would have Travel and Vibration, allowing them to go practically anywhere with relative ease. Stonewarders fits pretty well also. Tension to strengthen one's own items and themselves, and either destroy an enemy's armor or the ability to ignore it (pass through them) with Vibration. Pretty good combo for a guardian. Thoughts? Am I crazy? spoiler - probably Argument against - Coupled surges above don't make any discernible pattern in the Knights Radiant symbol from what i can see. Some are even shared by an order while other's are far apart. Maybe one is from cultivation while the other is Honor? Growth and what Wyndle says about his mother make me think that he is of Cultivation at least. Syl is pretty clearly of Honor.
  9. I agree with you that Shins surgebinding is most likely not from Cultivation, just throwing it out there. However I do believe Brandon stated Szeth does not have an honorspren.
  10. This is something i touched on in a cosmere thread, but i thought it might go better over here and I wanted to gather my thoughts on the subject into one place. I believe Cultivation is focused on Shinovar, and most likely created the Shin. Brandon stated in an interview that Honor did not create everyone on Roshar so this makes sense. Further, soldiers in Shin culture are looked down upon while farmers are treated almost as princes. This is because soldiers can only destroy, while farmers can create and grow, which I assume is along the lines of Cultivation's intent. Also the land itself is different and has a much greater capacity for farming and growth than the rest of Roshar. This leads me to believe that Cultivation created the mountains that break the highstorms and is possibly worshiped in some way by the Shin. Finally this makes me think that this connection with Cultivation may be why Szeth doesnt need an honorspren, as his surgebinding is powered through a connection with Cultivation while Kaladin's is through honor. If this isn't the case than maybe we haven't seen the magic related to Cultivation yet (which I feel is more likely). I believe it is mentioned that one order had powers of healing and regrowth, which would make sense to be tied with Cultivation and possibly this ability is still held by some Shin. Or maybe I am way off base here.
  11. Thanks for the welcome and the link! After reading that post and a few others I am going to revise my first post. I dont think Spren are of honor as Seons are of devotion, as Brandon stated in an interview that spren are of nature and not really aligned good and evil. This means to me that different spren probably fulfill several different shardic intents(probably a better phrase) or none at all which is what most of the spren seem to do. However honorspren may be the Seons for honor. But they still seem different as having a Seon doesnt seem to grant powers like bonding with spren does. But there is clearly more of a connection between a Seon and its master than just the relationship, or the Seon wouldn't be affected by the Shaod when their master is. As far as cultivation goes, i still don't see the connection with the Old Magic, so maybe it is a mysterious third shard like the thread you linked states. Maybe we havent seen cultivation's influence on a magic system yet, or maybe soulcasting is Cultivation?(although that doesn't quite seem to fit as nothing is being 'cultivated', just traded) Which brings me to a new theory which has probably been presented. Cultivation is focused on Shinovar This makes sense to me as the land itself lends itself to Cultivations influence. Also the Shin people praise farmers for creating and growing, whereas soldiers are looked upon poorly because they can only destroy. This sounds to mean like a social structure created around Cultivations influence. Lastly Brandon did state the Honor was indeed splintered, but he says it like its more of a judgement call which might mean one of two things. 1. Splintering isnt a black and white occurence, there could be different types or more likely... 2. I am reading way to much into his statement. This is also where Brandon states spren are of nature. Source Edit:seems that I was beaten to linking this by about a minute. I am defeated. Also thanks for the links Windrunner, i know that the wiki is just guessing here, I was just using them as starting points for some ideas.
  12. So this post is actually two theories that Im sure have probably been mentioned but i wanted to get peoples opinions. Spren I noticed that on the wiki it states Cultivation is probably tied to the old magics. However I am not sure that is the case. The Old Magics are only tied to Nightwatcher which is a spren from what i recall. Spren seem to be related to Honor (in fact i think they are related to Honor in the way that Seon are related to Devotion) for two reasons. 1. Honors intent is listed in the wiki as "seeks to uphold oaths and agreements, and to make things binding". It is mentioned that spren when measured in any way are locked into that measurement, and stop changing whatever has been measured. As if they are bound to that observation (only when it is recorded as well, as in it is some sort of contract). 2. The Old magics are described as a type of contract or agreement between the Nightwatcher and the other person, which again sounds more like it has to do with Honor than Cultivation, who i assume would have an intent more focused on a net positive investiture by building or growing something, rather than an agreement like this which seems more net neutral and akin to Honor. Splintered Shards This again has to do with Spren, but also Seon and Skaze. These three beings correlate to the three splintered shards Honor, Devotion and Dominion respectively. Seon clearly carry out devotions intent by being always faithful to their masters which seems to be their only goal as described by Ien in a Raoden flashback. Spren are a more diverse group that have more mysteries attached to them, but as I loosely tied them to Honor above i will assume the same here. Skaze are said to be the equivalent of Seons for Dakhor, but would obviously have to fill Dominions intent. So instead of being faithful, maybe they would respond only to the most powerful master, or they themselves try to maintain power over others in some way (although this seems unlikely as we already have a picture of the hierarchy of Dakhor, unless the Skaze somehow influence Wryn). Now Brandon has stated that Seon arent quite splinters like the Divine Breath of the Returned, but that thinking is on the right track. So maybe the difference is the Endowment willfully creates returned, whereas the three shards above are gone (splintered) and that is the difference? Are seons the remnants of Devotion now? (likewise for Spren and Skaze?) The problem with this seems to be that would mean that these three beings didnt exist before their shards were splintered which seems unlikely, or maybe they simply have changed since the splintering and now have sentience due to their shard being split? Anyways I am rambling and it is late. Thoughts? Ideas? Edit: I have changed my position a bit in a post below. Pretty much i now am only looking at honorspren as the Seon equivalent, and i also expanded on Cultivation, stating that i think her (believe she is a woman) influence is focused on Shinovar.
