I’ve searched about this theme through many discussions, but I’ve not found it yet; feel free to redirect me to that post if it already exist. There are many topics where people try to divide surges between physical, cognitive and spiritual ones; or inspired by Allomancy try to find a Push and a Pull version of every surge (like normal and reverse Lashing). I would like to add an element to the discussion and try to speculate together what we’ll see in the next books. Reading about Dalinar using Spiritual Adhesion to employ Connection my heart jumped: could it be that every surge have a manifestation in each Realm? I’m not the first who thought this, and we have some WoBs: So, Adhesion has the more Spiritual use among the ten, but each one has some application. What could them be? Only Bondsmiths can use Sp. Adhesion, what if some abilities or traits we have already seen, prerogatives of different orders, were alternative uses of the Surges? Scadrial magic system is the most completed for what we know, and it has references to Qualities like Connection, Investiture, etc., I’ll try to take that classification as a standard. (that’s the reason for the BoM spoiler alert) Here is a try of myself to classificate what I’ve thought, with the following legend: Known, supposed by me, in a place I suppose but could be questionable What is written in the line of an order is related to the resonances specific of that order. Surges .pdf And the explanation: I’ve considered the powers we have already seen almost as Physical, with the exceptions of Regrowth (progression) and Repair (tension): for what I understood they can restore the physical aspect of living or unliving starting by his/its cognitive aspect, reminding me forging, somehow. We have seen how the Lopen and the paralytic bridgman regained their lost limbs thanks to Stormlight-lesser-auto-Regrowth, because they considered those still part of them. Another thought: it seems to me that full-power-Regrowth is equivalent to Feruchemical-gold-Heal, specially after we’ve seen how Renarin use it in the battle (like would Miles Hundredlives or Wayne). I also read this WoB as another similarity between Feru-Gold-Heal and Storm-Self-Regrowth. Shallan’s eidetic memory seems to me similar to Copperminds use: she doesn’t remember everything, she decides to “take a Memory” to draw it later... Could this be a cognitive ability related to lightweaving, maybe? From the WoB about “Spiritual Transformation” we understand it cannot be a proper Transformation, but from his words the idea is likely near to the truth... A resonance between Transformation and Lightweaving? If so, is it related to the Physical aspect we already know or to their Spiritual affinities? Or a mix? We know that Lightweaving must have some Spiritual aspect from this WoB: We don’t know much about Cohesion, and it would interesting to guess what’s about, and I’ll try to start with the Spiritual aspect. If we take a water drop its cohesion acts to mantain the shape, sticking water to water; its adhesion to a surface (a leaf, for example) acts to stick the drop to it. So, looking to the Feruchemical table, if Spiritual Adhesion is related to Connection, could Spiritual Cohesion be related to Determination or Identity? I like the idea, because this analogy works well also with what we know about Stonewards’s behaviour: resolve, stubbornness. If it’s true it could be not a proper “active power”, but a passive one, or something useful for a resonance. For Windrunner I’ve wrote about two type of resonances: the “windshaping” Kal does in OB part I, which is not known if is a combination of Gravitation and Adhesion or the start of a Shardplate, and the high number of squires. Maybe it is only related to the leadership that many Windrunners have, but if we would like to follow this stream of hypothesis it could be related to a passive use of Connection, or a resonance between a passive Connection and the Spiritual Gravitation.
