  1. Concerning the shadesmar travel. I feel like an obvious reason was missed, especially since it was talked about a bit earlier. The pool or gateway is 'unstable'. Perhaps, as Discord becomes more prominent the pool is increasingly become more unstable for travel?!
  2. Any D&D gamers here who played Eberron? I keep envisioning the Rosharan version of the Lightning Rail. Metal plinths sticking out of the ground in a line with mounted fabrials that repel crem. The train is like a Maglev with fabrials mounted underneath the train that repels the specific metal of the plinth. The train has abrasion fabrials to resist the wind.
  3. Edgedancer; Brandon Sanderson,Ch 6, pg 59 Grimy Little Girl: Has food. GLG: The lady in charge, she has good (a lot of?) food. Lift: Has food for kids? GLG: Has food for kids. But mean too, cold, that one, her eyes are like swords. Doesn’t like kids, but has food for them. Really puzzling. Lift: Maybe because of other people? Like the other people, they give her spheres, if she gives food to kids? GLG: Maybe, maybe that’s right. Puzzling, but crazy too. Real crazy. … GLG: That ruckus above, the food from the sky. Everyone talking about it. That was you, huh? Lift: Yeah GLG: You’re a (stranger?) [important?] Lift: Yeah GLG: You care? Lift: I care GLG: People, they don’t care.
  4. From the description, I had the impression of goats.
  5. A thousand! I thought is was more like 60.
  6. On dear ol' mother Earth, the invention of the steam engine kicked off the industrial revolution. So I had two questions. Does the existence of modern fabrials and the exploration thereof constitute the beginning of the Rosharan industrial revolution in and of itself or do they need to create a motor/engine? If they need to create a motor/engine what form would it take? Would it be entirely some form of fabrial? OR would it be a hybrid of physics and investiture (say a steam engine with the water heated by a heating fabrial) or something else entirely? If you were the fabrial engineer how would YOU do it?
  7. Soulcasters cannot create polestones(the 10 different types of gemstones). IIRC Shallan says as much in the early chapters of the Way of Kings.
  8. Yeah, I remember reading that. Was wondering how feasible gunpowder would be on Roshar. Of course all of that would imply that they could come up with the formula in the first place. After all it was chemist/alchemists looking for immortality drugs here that led to it's discovery. And given the existence of soulcasting fabrials I get the impression that chemistry is fairly primitive on Roshar.
  9. Could you soulcast the ingredients for gunpowder? Charcoal -- Emerald/wood and plants Saltpetre (potassium nitrate) and sulphur -- Topaz/rock and stone Just aiding the war effort
  10. Correct, But then I made no inferences about Truthwatcher Spren. Rats you're right! I didn't remember the Listener ability to see spren. Rock, however, is a special case as he is able to see her even when others cannot.
  11. No the map in Oathbringer shows it location closer to the center of the continent.
  12. I would like to suggest that (admittedly not all evidence is in) that spren to the right of Bondsmiths and Truthwatchers on the double eye are invisible. While those to the left are visible and employ different means to hide. Syl and Wyndle are invisible and no one has mentioned noticing Malata's Dustbringer spren. Pattern remains visible and hides on objects. Ivory changes size to hide. Timbre at first has to hide in pouch.
  13. Hey Harycrapper! What reading are you referring to? Do you have a link?
  14. Leave it to me to throw something up on screen without explaining my concept well. I was trying to display a gestalt of the spren/attribute/outlook/relationship of the orders. Not so much what each spren is about or the attributes or what surges they may share, but what the general FEEL of the orders . I am trying to flip it on its head, the fact that some of the spren share names of what i am describing is secondary (sort of like saying the spren was named AFTER the concept was conceived from Brandon's viewpoint.) Arrgghhh I have this thing in my head and I cant explain it well! And yes I did pick/choose the eight orders because the other two FEEL like statistical outliers. As if they don't quite mesh with the others as yet.
  15. Hello all. If this has been discussed before forgive the redundancy. So thinking about the Double Eye of the Almighty and of course the lines between the orders it occurred to me that if you removed the Bondsmiths and Truthwatchers you get a chart of something like this. I am interested in feedback and critiques. Thanks all. P.S. Please note the opposite corners.
  16. First of all Fanboy fanatics do not rant, no we definitely and most assuredly do not! We expound! Yes! We definitely expound, at great length, mind you. Reading that last chapter in OB, I'm pretty sure that the overcharge is done by opening the perpendicularity. Possibly, but I'm none to sanguine about it. Stormfather was something of a one-off as Tanavast gave it his proxy when he died. So to speak. Because as I said, that is one big battery, supplying the needs of a city, a whole entire city! One gem at a time wouldn't make a millionth of a dent in the energy needs. In fact when they tried to infuse stormlight into it it had no visible effect. I believe that it was siphoned away so quickly into the 'wiring/strata' of the city it didn't even glimmer! I really don't think so. See that is the thing that was bothering me. The black one does more or less match the description of an Inkspren, but the white one doesn't look anything like a Reacher/Lightspren.
  17. OK, I dusted off an old map that speculated on the location of the Aimia and Shinovar OGs, because I started thinking about the fortress at the center of the Purelake, and I remembered that one of the Oathgate radials I drew, crossed through the center of the Purelake. And then of course I remembered Feverstone keep, that we know almost nothing about other than it is close to RallElorim and is on a plain. I of course wondered could it be a Coastal Plain in the rain shadow of the mountains? And then I wondered is it just pure coincidence that one of the radials just happens to cross through the Horneater Peaks and the Cultivation shardpools? The same radial, BTW, that Kholinar (the first gate captured) is on? So thinking about those two fortresses, I started thinking, yeah the Oathgates are cool and allow all the good little people move around, but these gates were built for WAR as well. And gates in the middle of cities are not very defensible, sure they can be locked and all, but come on?! If you were building a vast infrastructure like this wouldn't you want some safeguards? So I wondered, maybe there is a reason that the Purelake fortress is on a radial. And maybe Feverstone Keep as well. Maybe there are other fortresses scattered around Roshar, and they have oathgate rooms at their centers! Ok by that point the speculation train was running on full steam. Jumping tracks. Whoo boy. Urithiru. The middle of all of these Oathgates. A city tower. An Arcology. Cities need power to run. City wide heat, water, sewage, air circulation stormlight for quickly growing crops etc… Not to mention possibly having some sort of defensive array, or intra-tower teleportation pads or remote viewing screens, Mickey mouse alarm clocks. Lots of power. But all Urithiru has is a battery. A big honkin battery maybe, but just a battery. Ok people say that the Sibling is supposed to make it run, but show me a single location where Spren empowered a single thing? Yes they direct function, but they don't provide the actual power for it. Stormlight does. So just how the heck is that pretty battery filled? Well, we will just lower this itty bitty cage of gemstones down to the storm… Nahh. Well, the people using the Oathgates give extra stormlight… What? How? How is it collected and transported to the battery? OK, what about Bondsmiths? Just open a perpendicularity near the battery and bam! Full power baby! Ummm, first we don't know if all Bondsmiths could do that, or for that matter if any of them could, until Dalinar came along. It's been RAFO'd. Second, do you really want to be opening a GATEWAY to the Cognitive and Spiritual realms at the heart of your fortress city? That's just begging for some sort of desperation attack. Hmmmm. If only we had some way of collecting Stormlight from across all of Roshar… Hey gancho, we have this pretty array of gateways all around Roshar, why do they have to do just ONE thing? Why do the Oathgates have TWO spren? One of them certainly looks like a Giant Inkspren, but does that other one look like a giant bronze spren to you? Lets face it, a giant spren of the Elsecallers should be more than enough for shuffling stuff around through preprogrammed fabrials. So what is the white one's function? We know it's sentient, but it doesn't match up to any other higher spren that we've seen on camera. Maybe it's there for an entirely different reason, maybe it's there to funnel stormlight back through the network to provide power to the city?! So, you ask, why isn't the battery full? After all, it's been sitting there doing nothing for millennia. Well maybe the gates need to be unlocked. What about the Stormseat gate, it's unlocked now? Maybe it needs to be exposed and not covered in crem. What about the Thaylin gate? Bahh! I need a drink.
  18. Interesting. This was a good read. However your use of the word Devotion got me thinking. How do you think these line up? Yes Harmony is a double shard but it seems to fit.
  19. Also oddly enough there is another time dilation effect. Shallan thinks about the fact that the spheres are still retaining light long after they should have gone dunn. I can't recall if the thought was before or after the Re-shephir banishment. . I also have a vague memory of (WoB?) concentrated investiture causing time dilaton.
  20. Has anyone noticed that so fall all of the spren to the left of Truthwatchers are always visible? And so far, the two that we are sure of, to the right of TW are invisible. Pattern remains a visible shape. Ivory can shrink/grow Xxx remains a comet that has to hide Wendle and Syl are invisible except for Wendle's residue dust. Or has this already been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere?
  21. I dont think that is strictly accurate. For one thing Shallan, Ehlokar AND Gaz have all seen full bodied Cryptics prior to gaining surgbinding. Each in their own way. Shallan in Kharbranth when she autodraws, Ehlokar in mirrors and Gaz to the side of his missing eye. AND/OR Second, don't forget that this isnt Shallann's first go round with Pattern. Who knows what she saw when she was a child?
  22. Yup, I've read all of these. (Like I said, fanatic. LOL ) There are about 4 or 5 that skirt my questions. Actually maybe I should edit my post to state that most of my questions are from the viewpoint of someone standing in the CR and observing. But, ideally I'd love to see what all of the ardents on here think/speculate about some of these questions. Or for that matter do they have questions.
  23. Questions about the Cognitive Realm… Ok, I maybe taking this to a slightly fanatical level, but dammit I have soul wrenching questions here! So pick a few and discuss. Please. Or dredge up a few WoB's for my education! Thank you. Do ALL humans look like flames in the CR? What do Parshendi look like? What do Radiants look like? Do they still look like flames? Do they look an amalgam of their spren and a flame? What do Elsecallers look like? If an Elsecaller soulcasts an object (cognitively enters the CR), what does she look like while doing so? Does she look like an insubstantial version of her physical self? If so did her 'flame' change to look like her? Does she look like herself but outlined in flames? Does she look like a blend of herself and her spen? Does both herself and her spren appear in the CR? If an Elsecaller transports to the CR physically, does her flame suddenly transform into her? Or is it surrounded by stormlight and then she appears where her flame was? When you encounter a location in the CR where a village or city of sentients are in the PR are all of the flames about the same level above the beads in the CR? When humans are in a multilevel structure in the PR, are their flames floating higher above the beads than when they're at ground level in the PR? If the flames ARE NOT floating at different levels then what happens if one human is directly above another in the PR? Do the flames superimpose over one another in the CR? Are the Heralds visible in the cognitive realm? What do they look like? Can a herald/radiants cognitive appearance be attacked in the CR? If they are FULLY in the physical realm, why aren’t they metal, like the spren? Do the spren need to eat? (Their version of it anyway) If so, what do the spren eat? Are they simply ‘refreshed’ everytime there is a highstorm? Or do they consume something from human emotions? Or do the physical spren use the highstorm and the emotion spren use sentients? How do higher spren use stormlight as an exchange medium? Yes they use perfect gems for storage, but what about additional stormlight? With the closure of the oathgates and people forgetting where cultivation's perpendicularity is located, getting new amounts of stormlight in the CR is difficult at best. And there was no evidence of gems recharging in the CR. Or is it as if they're using the gold standard and have been doing so with a static supply of stormlight for a very long time? And if that's the case, then how do you account for spren such as cultivation spren using up the stormlight supply to manifest objects in the CR? Wouldn't they be having a shortage after such a long time? How do lower spren navigate the sea of beads? When an anticipation spren wants to get near a nervous human that is in the center the Rosharan supercontinent in the PR, how does the spren move through the ocean of beads to get near him? What keeps them from sinking to the bottom, just as physical humans do? True they don't need to breath, but they do need some way of maneuvering presumably.
  24. Curious. Do we know what the perpendicularity looks like from the Cognitive Realm side?
