  1. I recall Brandon saying something about how souls can stick around in the Spiritual Realm for a while after they die, which was the case with Kelsier. Also, the Returned clearly prove that it is possible to revive the dead, at least for Endowment. That happens shortly after death though, so presumably they're still in the Spiritual Realm at that point and haven't yet moved on to the afterlife.
  2. The way I've always seen it is that Elantris is a power amplifier, and when outside its range AonDor goes back to working at its normal strength. In fact, Raoden notes that in Teod, AonDor was about the same strength as it was when Elantris wasn't working. I think that AonDor itself will work anywhere on Sel, but it's only strong in proximity to Elantris. I'm pretty sure Brandon has said somewhere that the Shaod must have existed before Elantris was constructed. You have be living near Arelon for that to happen, but I don't think the selection is caused by Elantris. It is however, probably the reason they constructed Elantris in Arelon. I also don't think AonDor itself would get any weaker than it was in Teod, as long you were still on Sel. Notably, the other magic systems don't seem to vary in strength due to location- the Dakhor aren't noted as being any weaker in Teod than they were in Arelon, despite being much further from Fjordel, and Shai doesn't seem to have any problems using Forgery outside her homeland. So I'm inclined to think that AonDor is only different because of the Elantris-amplifier-Aon. The way I saw it is that it's your place of birth that affects what your spiritual DNA is, which determines what magic system you'll be able to use to access the Dor.
  3. If it cuts off their access to Preservation, they wouldn't be able to use Allomancy for the duration of the effect, although we don't know enough about aluminum in Mistborn to guess how long that might be.
  4. Probably brass or zinc, as those are the external metals.
  5. I strongly suspect that at least one Atium alloy with one of the mental metals could be used to send an Allomancer to Shadesmar.
  6. Given that the Seons lost all ability to communicate or reason if their owners became Elantrians during the Reod era, this is probably at least partly correct.
  7. This brings to mind Brandon's comments about Returned, namely that drabs can't Return the same way someone with Breath could. That seems to support your theory, as Breath most likely acts as an anchor to the Realms.
  8. I kind of doubt that there were already people on the Shardworlds other than Yolen before Adonalsium shattered. At least, there certainly weren't any on Scadrial, as we know Ruin and Preservation created the humans there. I suppose it's possible that some worlds could have been colonized by worldhoppers, but I'm inclined to think that most of the worlds that have Shards would have been populated by people the Shards created.
  9. It's occurred to me that the Knights Radiant must have been able to make Shardplate and Shardblades somehow, and given that they didn't seem to use fabrials, there's probably a Surge related to it. Dalinar might have this ability, which would fit with his character thematically.
  10. Actually, Alloy takes place before WoK chronologically. It's the second Mistborn trilogy, which has yet to be written, that occurs at about the same time as the WoK.
  11. I really doubt Shallan will be looking for a romantic relationship anytime soon, not after what happened with Kabsal.
  12. This is a very good point. The chapter headings aren't something I'd considered before, but they do seem to strongly indicate that Shallan is in Order 6, and Jasnah Order 5. As for Soulcasting organics, there's no reason that being in that particular Order would have any effect on her ability to Soulcast organics. Yes, number 5 on the Soulcasting chart is aligned with plants, wood, and moss, but that doesn't necessarily mean that being in Order 5 grants any special abilities with Soulcasting that Essence. Soulcasting is a Surge all on its own; it probably functions the same way regardless of which Order someone is in. The different Orders must gain access to it from a different kind of spren-bond, but the actual act of Soulcasting is probably the same for both Orders that can do it. In chapter 72, Jasnah comments that it's harder to Soulcast something that isn't the pure form of an Essence. Presumably, you need a better comprehension of what it is you want to transform when you're working with something that isn't an Essence, and Jasnah simply doesn't know a lot about biology. Granted, this is conjecture, but it seems logical to me.
  13. Everything can be used for sex. Everything.
  14. Well, maybe. I sort of doubt it, though. It's seems unlikely to me that people could be brought back from being dead- even only mostly dead- without something fairly major happening, given that the only actual resurrection we've seen (the Returned) requires the Splinter of a Shard.
  15. I disagree with a few points here. I'm not going to go into detail, because that would take forever. Suffice it to say that Sanderson's villains tend to be very complex characters, usually just as much, if not more so, than the protagonists. There are many different ways to depict shades of morality, and the one Sanderson generally follows is that most people are not truly evil. Most people in Sanderson's works feel justified in doing what they do. Even Ruin isn't really evil. Destroying things is just what he does. This is of course, not such a good thing from the perspective of the people he kills. I wouldn't say that this is any less realistic than the darker tone of Martin's story. It isn't necessary to make someone cynical to have them be a 'realistic' character. Idealism is just as viable as cynicism. At it's simplest, an idealist is someone who believes that people are good, and a cynic is someone who believes that people are bad. This has nothing to do with how heroic or villainous the character is. A murderous zealot can be an idealist, and the most morally upright people can be cynics. For me, how much I enjoy a series has less to do with how cynical or idealistic it is than with how those viewpoints conflict with events in the story. And I would say that Brandon's works are not totally idealistic. Note how Elend decides that he cannot always follow an absolute set of principles in the real world. He never gives up his ethics, but he accepts that sometimes he has to choose between the lesser of two evils. Despite this, he still retains his basic faith in humanity. Elend would be a much less compelling character if he abandoned his morality.
  16. Fair point. I guess we don't really know enough about the specifics yet to say whether or not someone could alter their appearance that way.
  17. It's not as if any other Feruchemist can steal their attributes from other people, so it would be utterly bizarre if a Nicrosil Ferring could. That's what Hemalurgy is for, after all. The Human attributes we've seen in Hemalurgy are Strength, Senses, Mental Fortitude, and Emotional Fortitude. There are probably more that we don't know about yet, too. I highly doubt that storing Investiture could affect all these things. That sounds really overpowered. Seriously, that would be almost as broken as Atium. Most likely Investiture just increases Allomantic strength. As to compounding Investiture, yes, it would probably give an Allomancer effectively unlimited power while burning a metal.
  18. Sazed explicitly says in the HoA epigraphs that the mists, the Well of Ascension, and Lerasium are the same thing in different states of matter, and he should know. Of course, we're talking about the body of a Shard, not a natural substance. We have yet to see a phase shift of a Shard's body. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but for anyone other than a Shard to do it would probably require a much better understanding of the fundamental principles behind the Shards and the Realms than anyone on Scadrial currently possesses. Also, I've always assumed that the Cognitive aspect of a Shard is the mind of the holder. This provides a possible explanation as to why you can't take up a Splintered Shard; each Splinter is probably attached to a separate mind, and the conflicting consciousnesses would prevent anyone from holding the entire Shard.
  19. I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that the Windrunners were Order 1.
  20. That kind of transformation might be possible with modern medical knowledge, but there's no way someone on Roshar could do it.
  21. As someone else reminded me recently, it is possible to use Awakening to affect other people directly. Vasher is able to alter people's memories, and that opens up all kinds of possibilities.
  22. There are a few nontheistic religions. Jesker, as described by Galladon, for example.
