  1. Oh man, Square Enix accidentally released the new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 reMind and has confirmed it’s coming out January 23!
  2. Just beat FF12. Now I’m going to go in with New Game + where this time I’ll do the side stuff with the Japanese voice acting and at 4x speed.
  3. I’m back from vacation in Florida. It’s good as always though there were some rude people on the Disney Cruise this time and some people getting a little too intimate with booze. Went to B&N for Black Friday and got these items: Doctor Who The Macra Terror (had no idea it was out here already so had to get it), A Storm of Swords, White Sand 3, Starsight, the leatherbound Jurassic Park duology and the leatherbound of Christie’s And Then There Were None with a couple other stories. When I got home my birthday present, Godzilla the Showa Years, from my sister had arrived (technically I bought it but she sent the gift cards for it) and it’s going to be interesting how I’m going to store this since it’s pretty tall. When I went to pick up the accumulated mail from vacation my preordered Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Shattered Grid hardback had arrived as well so I’ve got quite a bit as ‘birthday’ presents.
  4. Still playing FF12 and am having a little trouble with Daedalus in Giruvegan. I keep getting him down to the final 10-20% and he decimates all my characters. Kind of wishing that they had let Reddas join for this segment of the game. Might as well go with some leveling up to try boosting my characters stat wise.
  5. Finished All Systems Red. Would’ve finished in one sitting but I kept being interrupted. It’s an interesting story that makes me want to read the other novellas in the series. Now I’m going to start on Wilds Cards by George R. R. Martin.
  6. Finished Scratchman over the weekend. Started out creepy in the first half but the second half turned into a kind of Wonderland in hell story since it got whimsy and silly. Kind of funny how people turning into scarecrows was creepier than old scratch himself. Tom Baker isn’t my favorite Doctor but I do enjoy his run but even I can see how much of a vanity project this story was and I’m not mad about that since the book was enjoyable. It was hard to figure out how this would’ve worked as a film so maybe that’s for the best. It was also obvious which parts were added for this ‘novelisation’ (can something be called that if the filmed product never came to be?) since there were scenes that couldn’t have been thought of at the time, like the Doctor meeting one of his newest bodies (when you read the descriptives it’s obvious which Doctor it is) and Sarah Jane seeing her future that includes her appearance in K-9 and Company, School Reunion and even her show. Its good if you want more Doctor Who in your life and are curious about an aborted film project. Well gonna take a short break and go All Systems Red with a certain murderbot by Martha Wells.
  7. So like the title says what’s the weirdest or strangest thing you’ve heard someone say about you? I’ll start. One of the weirdest I’ve had was a teacher at the school I work at think I was both a student and that my mom was my wife! What leaps of logic brought her to the choice of “Young enough to be in middle school but old enough to be married to someone in their 60’s”? Also the married assumption happened because apparently she’s never seen two people with the same last name and it automatically means husband and wife and I guess assumed all her students were married to their parents by her logic.
  8. Wanted to try getting the Ultima Weapon in KH1 but I was getting sick of synthesis item hunting so I decided just to go ahead and fight the final boss. Might go back to get the ultimate weapons, fight the Phantom, Ice Titan and Sephiroth and maybe attempt the Unknown but I want a break so I’m heading into FF12
  9. I got my first Criterion Collection film last night. The film is Godzilla. It was pretty good and the HD transfer is fantastic considering the original film is gone and all they have is a 35mm fine-grain master positive. They also include Godzilla, King of the Monsters which I’m finding to be dull compared to the original which I couldn’t stop watching but find myself wanting to stop watching the Americanized re-edit almost the whole time. Can’t wait to watch the supplements which consist of: 1. Commentaries for both versions provided by film historian David Kalat 2. Interviews with actors Akira Takarada and Haruo Nakajima and special effects technicians Yoshio Irie and Enzo Kaimai (these are all separate interviews but I’m listing them together like the back of the box does) 3. An interview with composer Akira Ifukube 4. A featurette detailing the photographic effects featuring special effects director Koichi Kawakita and special effects photographer Motoyoshi Tomioka 5. An interview with Japanese film critic Tadao Sato 6. An illustrated audio essay about the Daigo Fukuryu Maru which inspired the opening of Godzilla 7. Trailers for both versions of the film. There is also a 16 page booklet featuring a 6 page essay by Village Voice’s film critic J. Hoberman and a page talking about the transfers. Considering how strict Toei is with Godzilla it’s great that this set has as many supplements as it does, especially with the respect Criterion gives to the film. I am so impressed with this release that I’m now a Criterion collector now. Trying to figure out what to get next but I’m thinking of Hitchcock’s Rebecca and The Princess Bride.
  10. Has anyone put a book down, either during the reading or after finishing, because something in the pages you just read was a little much for you to continue going at that moment? So far I have two. The first was a couple different moments from A Game of Thrones. I’m currently on my second which is Fairest by Marissa Meyer. When reading the other Lunar Chronicles books you know Levana was married to a guy named Evret and that she loved him very much. Hoo boy it’s worse than that since she’s manipulating him, brainwashing him, wearing his recently deceased wife’s face and forcing him to sleep with her (if you catch my meaning here) and that’s before she marries him. I’m at the point where she’s broken him down enough to force him into the marriage and it only took her a couple weeks to do it. This book was written so that readers could understand and feel sympathy for Levana but it’s made me more horrified of her if that’s how she treated the only person to show her kindness. Oh and during all these scenes she’s 16 so she’s a devil child as well. I’m going to keep reading this book (it’s only 222 pages and I’m literally halfway) since I want to know what happens to her sister Channery and her death, how she went through with trying to kill her niece and how she started as queen.
  11. Just got to level 50!
  12. Finished Storm Front. Would’ve finished much earlier but got a bit sidetracked around the middle so I didn’t get back to it for a couple weeks. Pretty good book that was smart and funny (actually snorted at one point) so I’m definitely going to pick up the rest of the series. Now that October has come back I’m going to do some horror themed reading. Going to start with Doctor Who: Scratchman and after that I’m going to read The Walking Dead comics I have.
  13. I’m one level away from my goal on Kingdom Hearts. It took two hours to get to level 49 and the EXP is about the same but I don’t have the energy to go another two hours right now. If I start again tomorrow as soon as I get home from work I should be able to get to level 50.
  14. There was a demo for FF12 included with Dragon Quest 8 when they were on the PS2. There isn’t one for Zodiac Age though. edit: In answer with your gambit off question if I’m remembering correctly turning it off would be counterproductive for you since I think not using gambits causes anyone who isn’t the leader to do their own thing, meaning 100% AI control, while having them on gives you a measure of control by giving the character AI a checklist of priorities. Here’s an example of what you can do if you get the right gambits from the shops: 1. Attack non-leader monsters (they’ll attack everything except the one you have targeted) 2. Attack monster with weakness 3. Heal status ailment [insert ailment here] 4. Use cure on party members when HP below 50% 5. Use ether on party members when MP below 30% Pretty much it will prioritize 1. until the conditions can’t be met (in this case the monster is immune to physical attacks and requires magic to damage it) which will cause it to move to 2. and so on until it reaches the bottom of the list and if it can’t meet any of the conditions then the character will do nothing and die from being attacked. The way it’s set up you can have one character prioritize healing and magic over attacking, another prioritize status effects (which is very useful between battles since that character will keep applying them when they wear off) and then you the leader can focus on killing the monsters. In the OG version you couldn’t do this with guests or summons but in Zodiac Age you can change their priorities so you can control their behaviors as well. The only thing that can really describe the system is it’s a hybrid of an action RPG and MMORPG stuck smack dab in the middle of the two. There’s more control than FF13 but a little less control than the turn based games since combat is in real time like in FF11 and FF14. In terms of total control to no control over party members it goes FF1-FF10 (ATB allows you to input everyone’s actions in battle), FF12 (you can set action priorities), FF13 & FF15 (I think control is similar to 13 where party uses best action possible but I haven’t played it yet), FF11 & FR14 (since your party is other people). edit 2: found a video that explains the system much better:
  15. Kingdom Hearts in general is a pretty easy game series, especially compared to FF. If you do get into the series here’s the exact order you need to play them so that surprises stay surprises: KH1, KH reChain of Memories, KH2, KH 358/2 Days, KH Birth By Sleep, KH reCoded, KH Dream Drop Distance, KH BBS0.2 and KH3. A lot of casuals skip the non-numbered ones without realizing they bring up characters and concepts that culminates in KH3. Thankfully all the titles, minus 3, are in the package known as The Story So Far. In there 358/2 Days and reCoded are movies but they give the gist of what’s needed to continue so you only need to play 7 games, one of which is about 3 hours since it’s the prologue to 3. Also in the package is a movie called X [Back Cover] that brings up a couple things seen in 3 so make sure to take an hour to watch it. Well the gambit is a form of choosing what your characters do, you just preset it beforehand so if you know a boss is weak to fire you can have the gambits set so that your party takes advantage of that weakness. It’s just annoying since you have to find and buy the different gambits in order to really customize them and you have to change it when facing certain enemies so if you have the perfect setup it’s a pain to figure out a new setup on the fly to beat the enemy.
  16. My 7 Doctor Who DVD’s came in! I think these were done like a DVD on Demand printing since the disc art goes all the way to the edge of the dvd (makes it look cheap to me but I don’t really care since I want to see all the classic episodes) and the underside is purple instead of the standard clear/white/mirror. Since this is a second print run the copyright now says 2019 instead of the years the sets originally released and the dvd logo has been replaced with a very different typeface/font. 27 to go unless they announce more animated episodes!
  17. The story holds up pretty well to be honest, it’s when you get to KH2 everything starts going off the rails. Gameplay wise it’s primitive when compared to the newer games but it has a charm with how simple Sora’s attacks are as a novice fighter. One thing I didn’t like about FF12 OG version was the gambit system, the thing where you decide your party members actions by importance. Zodiac Age completely overhauled the battle system by getting rid of the License Board and replacing it with the Zodiac Board, it’s a job system where each of the 12 boards is a different job. At a glance both systems work the same but functionally it’s different since in the original everyone has access to everything while the jobs limit them to certain abilities, weapons and spells. Definitely worth giving a second chance if you enjoy the job systems of the older games.
  18. Sure is! Despite continuity errors later on it’s still fun to watch. Also taking the time to listen to the commentaries from the cast and crew.
  19. Doing a rewatch of Once Upon a Time from Season 1-7.
  20. Update on my Kingdom Hearts challenge. I’m now Level 46 at 31 hours on Destiny Islands. Almost to Level 47 and it’s at the point of needing around 6000 EXP to level up and close to 2 hours now. I am seriously going to be ripping through everything once I leave the Islands. After finishing this I’m just going to play FF12 The Zodiac Age to have a break from Kingdom Hearts. Already figured out which jobs I’ll have the characters use so I’m ready for it.
  21. American Horror Story 1984. So 80’s and actually pretty spooky like the horror films from that time and taking some beats from both Halloween and Friday the 13th. One of the billed star characters is Richard Ramirez so that’s one character who’ll survive this season for real world reasons and the fact he shows up in Hotel for Devils Night. Kind of nice seeing Billie Lourd play a character who doesn’t seem bored all the time. Also loving Emma Roberts as a nice girl for once.
  22. I was watching something Doctor Who related on YouTube yesterday and had started thinking “maybe I should think about getting the complete season Blu-rays of the classics” so I went to the bbc online store to see how much the sets were and to my surprise they had some of the out of print DVDs available. I cross referenced my list of serials I don’t have yet and managed to check off 7! I’m still going to get the Classic season sets but have them more as a supplement to the DVDs since I already own the DVD and Blu-ray of Spearhead from Space so I don’t mind having double copies here (I only mind when the content is exactly the same with no extras added in the Blu-ray)
  23. Update on my Kingdom Hearts challenge. I’m now Level 43 with 23 hours on Destiny Islands. This is getting so tedious to do 7 more levels.
  24. The Big Boss. I like Asian martial arts films funner to watch than western ones, mostly because the Hollywood versions tend to crowbar in a “might is not right” or some other moral message while the eastern ones are more “hey let’s have some fun with martial arts” since it’s fun to see the silly brutality over “kung fu is violent!!!” anyday.
  25. 17 hours into my Kingdom Hearts Final Mix Level 50 at Destiny Islands run. Just got to level 40 and it’s now at the point where I’m leveling up once an hour and that time keeps increasing so it’s not going to be 10 hours to get to level 50. There have been a few times already where I wanted to end the challenge and go onward but I really want to finish this challenge so much. I don’t know how people doing the Level 100 at Destiny Islands challenge do it since it’s so monotonous and dull that I’ve resorted to listening to other stuff on YouTube just to escape the island music and the fight sounds of the same 5 kids. Pray for me!
