  1. I initially started reading Skyward in April, but at the time I couldn't find the strength to go further than the first couple chapters. I found Spensa insufferable, because of her dramatic overconfidence. Her characterization, added to the obvious incoming failure of her pilot exam, made me feel so stressed and embarrassed... I had to put the book down. It wasn't Brandon's fault so much as my own personal taste in characters. Fast forward to a few days ago, I needed a good story to dive into so I picked it up again. And... well here I am. I ended up loving it! Spensa's character still irked me from time to time, but increasingly less as I progressed. However, I don't understand how all characters seemed to accept her from the start, and even appreciate and respect her, for some. Like, please, you're telling me nobody in her flight found her battle cries and overall attitude cringy and/or annoying? Am I the only one who can't stand people like that? (I don't include Jorgen since they got into a personal conflict almost immediately) Anyway, I loved the story and I don't regret waiting till now to give it a second chance since I now only have to wait a week for book two hehe
  2. I am pretty sure this has already been discussed in the thread, but I think that what @SLNC means is that the whole Adolin-revives-Maya-and-becomes-a-Radiant plotline is just one of the many things that fall on Adolin's laps without having him face any kind of conflict. He manages to revive a blade without knowing it, just by acting like his usual self, and because the blade he's been carrying all this time just so happen to fit his natural personality/behaviour as a guy who likes helping people? (yep, this is a bad rephrasing of a point made earlier...). Conflicts and change are what makes a story/storyline interesting. But there isn't any in the Adolin-revives-Maya-and-becomes-a-Radiant plotline. A journey involves an evolution in a character, however, for now, it seems as if Adolin just has to keep doing what he's already doing.
  3. @Zoja Oh so THAT's what it meant ! I remember laughing out loud at Adolin's comment, but like you the word "axalacious" confused me and I completely missed the joke. Without you I still wouldn't get it, so thanks! I'm curious as to how they'll translate that bit
  4. For so long I was afraid of this massive thread ; then someone referenced it elsewhere and it caught enough of my attention as to make me consume the last 10 pages. And... wow. There was so much there I had not seen, things that I find so fascinating. Especially all the symbolism surrounding The Girl Who Stood Up, but also the analysis (I think it was @Dreamstorm ?) of Adolin's thoughts toward Shallan and Kaladin. It got me so excited! I admire you guys for your dedication to dissect these texts and characters! It also gave me food for thought, as much about the books themselves as about my own opinion/preference on the matter. During WoR I really enjoyed Shallan and Adolin's romantic storyline. Then the chasm sequence happened and... storms, from that point, Shalladin became my guilty pleasure. I can't tell how much of my inclination comes from an objective "they fit together, no other character would be as good for them as the other one, they are clearly endgame" and a completely subjective basic fangirly "omg the two mains together i ship iiiit". But at the same time, I still appreciate Shadolin scenes and a part of me understands how the marriage might be a sustainable development for both characters. I think it was a few pages back that you discussed the importance of Shallan making the choice of getting married. I agree with both points of view: yes, it can be seen as a hurried band-aid solution for Shallan to keep her human anchor in order to not confront her deep personal problems (+ the "going further in their relationship" part), but it is still a decision, a step forward in the way that she thinks she knows what she wants, and she takes it. (But then, why not show the wedding ? Even through a secondary character's POV, in order for the scene not to feel redundant with Dalinar and Navani's own ceremony...) As for the love triangle, it could be interpreted as a means to show Shallan's bewilderment. So many things can happen in book 4, and since Shallan's issues won't magically disappear no matter what happens, I would like to think that her marriage is not doomed and that it can provide new and interesting situations for her to discover some of the answers she lacks. Furthermore, I am not sure Shallan could handle things better on her own, since that's what she has already been doing since the beginning of the series. Maybe marriage will bring her and Adolin closer and help her deal with her baggage? Sure, their relationship doesn't have the healthiest foundations but this is not to say that it will stay this way. Just as Shallan and Kaladin's relationship would not nearly be the same without the chasm scenes, a lot can happen in the following book(s) plot-wise that can drastically alter Shallan and Adolin's dynamic, for better or worst. There is a lot of holes in this approach; hell, even as I am not really convinced by it, so much is left in the dark. Even if Shallan liking Kaladin could be justified as a way to illustrate her fragmentation, why make Kaladin like Shallan? And why not show the wedding? PS: I see I am not the only one who chose today to manifest myself for the first time! ( @Peanut English is not my first language either so it may not be worth much coming from me, but hadn't you said anything, I don't think I would have picked up on it!)
  5. I disagree but I understand where you're coming from because I too was expecting something spectacular and striking, and the revelation kind of left me hollow. But I feel as if that was the point. Her death was frustratingly almost accidental, and IMO that's what makes it all the more tragic and painful. It was the product of just another war decision. It highlights the fact that it is Dalinar's usual bloodthirst and eagerness to crush his enemies that killed her, both psychologically and literally.
  6. Someone just mentioned Rlain's POV and yes I agree. That one caught me off guard in the best way. Cause everybody likes Bridge Four, their camaraderie, warmth, loyalty, confidence. And then Rlain's POV hits you. I love how he managed to convey both his frustration and his love. You understand him and even get upset on his behalf. Around the end, I got worried, because so much pent up feelings are not good and could lead him who knows where. And then, Kaladin. So simple and yet so evocative. I started breathing again. This is painted as just another ordinary moment, but one that still requires understanding, courage and trust, from both characters. Storms, Brandon, when I think you can't surprise me anymore.
  7. Elantris ! I picked it up randomly a few years ago at my local library, finding the summary intriguing, and started to read immediately to have an idea of the content. That first scene with Raoden got me hooked right away. I wouldn't stop reading so when I finished the first book (this edition was split), my brother looked up Brandon's other works and ordered the first book of Mistborn along with the complete edition of Elantris. I think that's the first time I really fell in love with an author. After I finished the last Mistborn book, that's only then that I made the connection with another fantasy book I had bought in English even before i read Elantris. It was the WoK. I remember i liked the prologue but didn't understand English well enough at that time to go on much further. So my first time is technically with the WoK but really, it's Elantris.
  8. Thank you for your answer ! I think I'll wait until I have finished the main Cosmere novels before digging into all that stuff
  9. Haha, I'm glad I made you laugh, even unintentionally ^^ Oh ok ! I should really read those books ! Thank you ! Well actually, I didn't know about the Cosmere until yesterday, thanks to this site. I've never pictured Elantris's and Mistborn's worlds as being linked. I researched it a bit, and found out about Hoid, but I have no memory of him. So I'm a bit lost between all of that ! (I feel like such an outsider... ^^' ) (sorry but what is WoB ?) Oh really ? That's funny, I would never have imagined that ! These names don't really seem French, even though Kelsier as "Kell-see-ay" does have a ring to it ! (funnily, it sounds a bit like "acier", the French for "steel")
  10. Thanks ! Sorry but who are the Sticky Sticks ? Haha, thanks Hi, and thanks ! No I don't mind at all I will start by your second question, because it is the easier : 2) Well, it is not that I dislike Oblivion, but I was so different from Morrowind, the environnement was so much more classical than the landscapes in Morrowind ! I did not get caught up in it the way I did in Morrowind. And I bought it in English to have all the extensions, so there was a lot of things I didn't understand, both in game and as regards the gameplay. But I plan on giving it another shot soon 1) Love this question ! It's gonna be a bit tricky but I'll go my best. - I pronunce Vin like "veen" even though vin exists as a word in French, meaning wine, and is pronunced [vɛ̃] (I had to go look for the phonetical symbol because this sound doesn't exist in English). - I pronunce Venture the French way, which is [vɑ̃tyʁ] (almost none of these sounds exist in English either) - Elend, Kelsier, Marsh, Dockson... I pronunce them all as in English, I think, but with a French accent, if it makes sense. - Ham is Am (Fleur Delacour style) (even in French, they tried to give her a French accent, which was a bit confusing) - Sazed is [sazɛd] There are also several characters who don't have the same name in English and in French, especially the ones with nicknames : - Breeze becomes Brise, and the pronunciation is the same, except for the "r" - Clubs becomes Clampin ( [klɑ̃pɛ̃] ) - Spook becomes Spectre ( [spɛktʁ] ) That was interesting ! I had never taken an interest in phonetics before, so it may be messy or even wrong.
  11. The Aeneid, by Virgil, 'cause that's classy and I was curious.
  12. Hi guys ! ^o^ I don't really know how the thought occured to me, but five minutes ago I just wondered "hey, why have I never looked for a Brandon Sanderson community ?". So here I am, ready to join you and talk about my favourite author with you guys ! My name is Margot and I'm French, so beware, my English may not be great ! I am nineteen, and a fan of Brandon Sanderson's work since I picked up Elantris in my local library 5 years ago, even though the Mistborn trilogy is what made me truly fall in love. I also liked Rithmatist and Legion. And The Way of Kings has been on my bookshelf for a reaaally long time but I've never got around to starting it (mainly because it is in English, and when I bought it I didn't understand it well enough to enjoy it). Well, apart from all that, I love mangas, fantasy (such as the Farseer Trology) and French Sci Fi, period novels, ... I'm also a huge Morrowind and Skyrim player. And I love Youtube adaptations. And Pokémon. How could I forget Pokémon ? If you have any questions, I'd love to answer them !
