  1. I don't know that I agree with that. There's been plenty of books labeled "teen" or "young adult" that I've read that had "f*ck" in it.

Additionally, and sort of as a side note, I really dislike the idea that books have to be targeted towards a certain age range of readers. What makes this a teen book? The main character's age? Kaladin was 19 when Stormlight Archive started, which is practically the same age. How old was Siri, in Warbreaker? 16? Neither of those books are considered young adult. So is it lack of explicitly adult content? If so, that's kind of ridiculous. It implies that only teens and young adults can be the "target audience" of literature that doesn't contain explicit content, which is just flat-out wrong. Does including explicit material in a book make it better somehow, and therefore only suitable for more experienced and mature readers? Not in the least.

Sorry, I don't mean to go on a rant but this sort of thing always bugs me.

Funny thing about that: I was at the bookstore today, and looking in the young adult section because I wanted to check how much "Firefight" and "The Rithmatist" cost, and there was a copy of "The Hero of Ages" there as well. However, there was also a copy of "The Hero of Ages" in the adult fantasy section. The only difference between the two is the cover: The copy in the adult section had the cover with Vin and Elend standing back to back, while the copy in the teen section had the cover with Vin standing atop of a dead koloss. (The second one offends my sensibilities as a Sanderfan, since Vin doesn't have an obsidian dagger and her hair is tinged red, but ANYway,) What struck me as strange was that Vin looked 25-30-ish years old on the one in the adult section, while she looked like she was 12-15-ish on the young adult version.

In any case, random anecdotes notwithstanding, I think that the difference is that young adult novels are more marketed at teens, so they deal more with themes that teens will identify with, and also always use first-person viewpoint for some reason. For instance, if "The Hunger Games was marketed and written for an adult audience, I imagine that it would deal more with how the games are terrible and can't be stood for, as well as themes pertaining to that, instead of it that being a backdrop to Katniss and her quest to find Peeta. I think that were it written for adults, the backdrop and center-stage roles would be reversed.

    Mockingjay spoilers

Also, the twist at the end of the last book, where Coin is evil and stuff probably would have been fueled less by Primrose getting exploded and more about how what Coin was doing was wrong to the morals of the book, seeing that Primrose was more a a thing personal to Katniss, whereas the rest was more about hunger-gamesing being horrible.

Finally, I think that most books are written with what kind of book they want to be (Middle-grade, young adult, adult, children's, whatever.), and some things that would be deemed inappropriate for that age group would not be included in the final copy.

P.S. I could go on about some other books, but I won't subject you to that. I have a bad history of being ill-disposed to/despising young adult novels.

  2. Mostly it was the fact that chull (while incredibly cute [what??? They are!]) happens to be a replacement swear here. Guess that kind of leaked through. :P Though I don't know if Horneaters eat chull either...

Well, I didn't know that, having only three days experience. Also, I'm beginning to get the feeling that there was something fishy about the cookies I was offered. I distinctly recall there being some mention of Horneaters eating shells. Perhaps not specifically chull shells, but that was implied. (Also, I need to add "Chull" and "Horneater" to the dictionary.)

  3. I can't believe he would charge an extra fee to ship to Canada... Canada is not international...

I wanted to order something as well, if I can get myself to it.

Well, Canada is technically not the U.S., even if FedEx only has to ship it an extra 70 kilometres. Darn shipping costs. Also, what makes you think Canada? I could technically be in Mexico. Or in international waters.

  4. I wasn't under the opinion Horneaters actually ate chull dung. Rock just dumped it in Sadeas's soup. Because, you know, chull dung. Sadeas deserved it. :P

I was referring to their shells. If you thought I was referring to Sadeas's food, I may have to rescind my earlier comment.

Also, you know you're a Sanderfan when you debate the value of using chull in food.

  5. Best. Book report. Ever.

Even if it took 20 pages, it would be so fun to write! Example: WoR. 10 pages on Stick.

You know you're a Sanderfan when your book reports all have ten pages discussing Stick. (Even if it's not a book written by Brandon Sanderson.)

  6. Well,  I don't think Steel Inquisitor-ing pays much, other than having superpowers and a high rank. As for the Obligators, I think you might be underestimating just how much witnessing they do, since, apparently, they witness everything "As simple as promise to come to a game of shelldry." . Also, they run the bank, so that has to count for something. Finally, according to the wiki, the Canton of Resource handles "trade, transport, and taxation", so I guess there are taxes.

  7. Assuming that Marsh knew what a Shardblade does, and doesn't let Szeth hit him in a lethal spot that wouldn't usually kill him, Marsh would probably win because of his raw allomantic power and 400-odd years of experience. Having said that, there's no guarantee that a Shardblade would do the same thing to an Inquisitor, since they don't really die like humans. They die when their Hemalurgic Spikes are separated, but is severing one's soul from something the same as separating their spikes? I just don't know. I'd have to say Marsh would probably win.

As for the most powerful non-shard beings in the cosmere, I'd have to say these      , in no particular order:

Susebron, due to his great amount of Breath, if not experience.

Marsh, who, as WayneSpren said, is basically the Lord Ruler+.

The Nightwatcher, assuming that she isn't secretly Cultivation

The Stormfather, since he seems to be in a similar weight class as the Nightwatcher, assuming, again that she's an uber-spren.

Frost, just because he's a dragon.

  8. I originally heard about him when I read the "Babel Clash" article between him and Brent Weeks. I marked him down as an author whose books I wanted to read eventually, but he mostly slipped to the back of my mind. However, one day, at my local Chapters, there was a free booklet celebrating the release of "The Way of Kings" that included the first five chapters of Mistborn: The Final Empire, and Part One of "The Way of Kings. I read the excerpt from "Mistborn" soon after, and it was near Christmas, so I asked for a copy of "Mistborn". I read it a few months later, (I have a very expansive reading list) then bought and read books two and was finished within two weeks, because Brandon Sanderson writes in the kind of way that allows for that.

  9.

As a herpetologist, I encourage increased reptilization.

It can never hurt to have a few extra reptiles around. Unless that reptile is Smaug.

...wow. Quite the interesting life you've got there. :P Welcome!

*And I believe the preferred terminology around here is "Sanderfan".

My life always sounds more interesting when I talk about dogwood berries and British spelling  :D .

            Sanderfan. I must remember that.

  10. I have no idea where harmony travelling to Roshar came from. He was obviously still in Scadrial in The Alloy of Law, which Brandon Sanderson has stated happens at roughly the same time as The Way of Kings. (I can't find the quote, but it's somewhere.) I think that Harmony would probably have more raw power than Odium, but certainly not by a 2:1 scale. Given that Ruin apparently has very poor future-seeing abilities, and, according to the Letter, Ati was not originally as dangerous as Rayse, I think that Odium would be far more powerful than Ruin. However, Preservation has very powerful future-seeing powers, since preservation is a long-term thing. Preservation would have less raw power than Ruin since some of it is in the humans of Scadrial. However, even with that, I think that Harmony would have roughly the same future-seeing power as Odium. So, I imagine in a plain Shard-on-Shard cage match, Harmony would probably win. However, I think that Rayse is a far more cunning and dangerous Shardholder than Sazed. He also has far more experience in wielding the power of his Shard than Sazed. I think that it would probably be a very pitched battle, probably decided by the humans and other assorted minions. Also, if any other Shards intervened, which, given events up 'til now, seems unlikely, the tide of the battle would likely change, which I'm only adding since, assuming this hypothetical conflict would happen on Roshar, Cultivation, and possibly some Nightwatcher-calibre spren might join the battle.

  11. Since I can't come up with anything more original, Hello! As you probably figured out by reading my nameplate, I go by the name of Evil Reptile. (It's a long story.)

I love reading,  folding origami, listening to music that can be described as "metal" or "rock", and swimming.I live at least seventy paces to the left of nowhere, depending on what you consider nowhere. My favourite food that's actually considered food is pizza. My favourite colour is green, and "favourite" and "colour" just got a red underline denoting that I used the British spelling. My favourite kind of stick is bamboo. My weapon of choice is words that nobody but me cares enough to know, and my poison of choice is dogwood berries. (Also a long story.)

Anyway, I have read all of Brandon Sanderson's cosmere novels (but not novelettes or novellas or short stories), Steelheart, and I hope to read everything of his that I haven't. I write for fun and have never finished a story. Especially the one that actually had more pages of maps than story. I hope to one day convince everybody I know to read more fantasy books. I look forward to becoming a member of the Sanderson-fanian community.
