  1. Just because they produce similar effects doesn't mean they're the same magic system. I would consider them completely different systems: on Sel, AonDor uses symbols to access the power of the Dor, while on Roshar the investiture--stormlight--is used directly.
  2. Um actually, it says the exact opposite of that. "and Invia wrote of them, 'capricious, frustrating, unreliable,' as taking it for granted that others would agree". Invia used those adjectives with the assumption that others would agree; in other words, this was a common feeling at the time.
  3. Actually, I find this idea kind of compelling (even with the pokemon jokes.) Many spren, like windspren, seem to be mindless manifestations of natural forces. If one of these spren were to somehow gain additional investiture, could that push them over the line into sentience? (Similar to mistwraiths gaining spikes to become kandra.) And, if this is correct, maybe the source of that additional investiture colors what type of spren they become?
  4. Is this some kind of crazy typo, or is Warbreaker Prime really that different from the published novel?
  5. I read through that encounter again and noticed something else. Taravangian says "If only we had a Shardblade." I think he was fishing for another way to determine if Jasnah was a surgebinder. I agree with OP's hypothesis. Whether he caused the rockfall or not, Taravangian was definitely trying to figure out if Jasnah could surgebind.
  6. Jasnah = Jas nah. I believe H can replace anything, so that just leaves the S and N not matching up. Pretty close if you ask me. I have no ideas regarding the other three.
  7. It's also interesting that he asked Jasnah about how she got her soulcaster after the incident in question.
  8. Actually, Dalinar and Gavilar are both very close to symmetrical--only the consonants are off.
  9. Do we know the chronology of when he actually went to the Nightwatcher? Or do you just mean that maybe he was less smart that day, and realized it on a smarter day?
  10. Somewhere in Hero of Ages it's explained that this difference is due to Ruin's influence in some way.
  11. I thought their description was the same as Shallan's symbol-heads.
  12. Cool, thanks. Regarding Kaladin's healing, it seems to me Brandon doesn't do special cases. If Kaladin has some unique ability, there will be a reason he's special. We don't have a reason yet that I can think of. My feeling is, we know as little about the Radiants as the characters in-world. We're learning right along with them. To reference the earlier quote, Brandon said that shardblades cut the soul. Kaladin healed such a cut. Therefore, Rosharans have a way to heal the soul. To me it seems pretty clear cut (heh.)
  13. Hi all, I just decided to join after seeing a post I could possibly comment on. I usually just lurk in most communities, but you may see me pop up every now and again. I was introduced to Sanderson's writing when a coworker suggested I read Mistborn several years ago. I devoured the trilogy, then bought Elantris immediately thereafter. Since then, I've read Alloy of Law, Warbreaker, Emperor's Soul, and both Stormlight books. Each world is individually fascinating (though I found Nalthis the least interesting personally) but to discover the Cosmere... that was completely breathtaking. I learned of it some time ago, and was only really aware of Hoid's cameos (and the mindblowing reveal at the end of Words of Radiance.) After browsing around on the Coppermind I learned of some other world hoppers I'd completely missed, and it just blew my mind. So now I'm reading it all again, and paying attention to people's descriptions, mannerisms, names, and speech patterns(!) Suffice it to say, I am in awe of the grandeur of this thing Mr. Sanderson is creating. I just hope it doesn't take him too long to finish!
  14. Hi, this is my first post here. Hope I'm not making an chull of myself... Words of Radiance(?)
