  1. I've heard this advice over and over and I think it's the best. Write every day. Even if you don't feel like it. You can't improve if you never practice. Also, if you're stuck or feeling like your writing has become a bit stale, I've heard that leaving your work for a few weeks or a month and then going back to it with a fresh mindset can work wonders.
  2. "Do you think there are make out spren? Let's research this."
  3. It's got to be Wit. I remember when I was re-reading WoK I read the entire scene with Wit insulting guests (and Sadeas) out loud to my roommate and she was in stitches. She won't read Sanderson novels but she begged me to tell her any time Wit came back so I could read more witty comebacks to her. My second pick would be Wayne from AoL. Oh, Wayne. You beautiful masterpiece, you.
  4. I would really like a pronunciation guide, because I have this weird anxiety regarding talking about a series and pronouncing a character's name horribly, horribly wrong. As it stands, I'll never get used to Brandon's pronunciation of Shallan's name. At this point I pretty much just go with whatever I want. I know I'm butchering half their names, but such is the life of a reader.
  5. Ahh, I came here just to say Lopen and you beat me to the punch . My other favorite side character is from TWoK, during one of the interludes--Axies. He was the dude who woke up in the trash heap and almost avoided imprisonment for public indecency . I was in public when I read his interlude for the first time and actually laughed out loud once or twice, which is something I rarely do in private and usually would never do in public! Gosh, I seriously hope he comes back a few more times besides that glimpse in WoR.
  6. This would be the most glorious fictional lunch date to end all glorious fictional lunch dates. I quit guessing how characters would get along after I swore Shallan and Adolin would despise one another . I'm not a good guesser! But yeah, I think a Dalinar/Lirin team-up would definitely kick my fictional-dad-crush-syndrome into overdrive.
  7. This just in: The Horneater Peaks are, in fact, Scotland.
  8. Wow, I can't believe how international we are here! That's so spectacular ! I was born in a small farming town in Indiana and moved to another stupidly small farming town in Ohio when I was 16. But I go to school about 14 hours away down south, which was probably the stupidest decision of my young life. I see some people from Illinois! Did someone say Chicago meetup? I think I just heard someone say Chicago meetup. Heey, I go to school about an hour from Conway! We drive over to Conway to shop sometimes .
  9. I grew up on Kiki's Delivery Service (on VHS!). That one will always be a special little sparkle in my heart. As a grown up, though, I think my favorite is tied between Castle In the Sky and the most recent film, The Wind Rises. The kid in me is geeking out over the sky pirates and adventure and pretty colors of CItS, but the nearly post-grad history major in me loves TWR for the deeper themes and historical setting. But I think all Miyazaki movies are flawless. Except Ponyo. Nobody liked Ponyo.
  10. OHH, man. This is a revelation I'm really anticipating in the next book because there are a dozen different ways the crap can hit the fan. After figuring out for myself what happened to Helaran, I thought Shallan would confront Amaram and he would use that opportunity to make Kaladin look like a bad dude. I thought Shallan would not take it very well. I thought it was time to wave goodbye to any sort of Shallan/Kaladin brolationship/romance. That didn't happen. In fact, Kaladin realizing he was Helaran's killer was pretty anticlimatic. I mean, he did have bigger issues at the time, but still. As it stands, I still think Amaram will be the one to spill the beans. And I still don't think it will go over splendidly.
  11. You guys sure like your redheads. I can only imagine how things would go down if a Horneater convention moved in or something. Hey BreathTaker! I'm sure one day I'll put on my big girl pants and venture into the unknown world of these tumultuous sounding guilds/cults(?)...maybe not today, though. But I have been hearing a lot about this so-called Newcago court .
  12. Oh, that sounds absolutely wonderful! Where are you from? There's a green tea latte I get at Starbucks sometimes that sounds like matcha with a ton of milk and cream! When I finally get around to getting some matcha I'll definitely try it
  13. Tea is one of my major passions! I tend to lean towards green or white tea typically. Lately I've been drinking a brand called Touch Organic; their Jasmine Green tea and Oolong have been my lifeblood the past few months! As for black tea, I love Irish Breakfast tea with lots of cream and sugar. I wish we had more tea houses in America that weren't geared towards cranky, rich old ladies. Has anyone tried matcha before? It looks so crazy good!
  14. I basically just talk/tweet/facebook/tumblr/instagram about it incessantly until some poor soul finally lets me push a copy into their hands.
  15. I second the Katniss thing. By Mockingjay, I couldn't stand any of the characters in that series. Oh wait, yes, I could. BUT THEY GOT KILLED OFF. I never liked Denna in the Kingkiller Chronicles. I don't think she's a bad character per se, I just find myself groaning and rolling my eyes every time she pops up or Kvothe waxes poetic over her pinky finger for twenty paragraphs. I hated Shallan in TWoK (totally loved her by WoR, though). I found her sections ridiculously boring compared to Dalinar's and Kaladin's. And I hate to say it, I honestly do, but from page one of Mistborn I was never a fan of Vin's.
