  1. Sorry if I reek of virgin but I have an idea you could possibly try out on your podcast. Do an episode with 1,2,3 aspiring writers on it and ask them directly their fears, troubles, goals, and try to interject as much wisdom back at them as possible. Yes I know that is exactly the premise of your show but sometimes getting the question directly from the horses mouth gives you the anxiety/fear behind it better than a pants-less Howard could. It might be... possible... that you all are too far removed from 'writing virginity' to remember the anxiety over it all???
  2. Hi all, I have listened to all of your pod-casts over the past year; I started late but have since caught up, and have one question that I feel has not been addressed. Now I could be wrong, and will accept however large piece of humble pie if it is delivered, but I want to know more about self-editing. Now to further explain my situation; I work full time, I have young kids, and home responsibilities, all of which eats up most of my free time. Even then I still manage to get an average of 1,000 words a day typed in to whatever I'm working on at the time. Most of my writing is done on a chrome-book, which I use on my light-rail ride to and from work, over my lunches, and when its slow at work. By the time the kids are in bed and my but finally hits the couch most of motivation has evaporated and all I want to do is surf the web and watch Justin Bieber videos. So that being said, space and time are limited in my life. I have searched Amazon.com for books on editing but so far nothing has tickled my muse about how to best go about dissecting my drivel to find the possible gems beneath. Can you talk about self-editing please. I have gone so far as to join two meetup.com writers groups in my local area but they don't seem all that productive or motivated. As of right now I have a 200,000 word first draft fantasy book done, a 60,000 word sci-fi book done, and am now 20,000 words into another sci-fi novel. I don't want to get stuck in first draft purgatory and would like to see some of my work mature as I know it (hopefully) can. Thank you, Dave
  3. I starting writing the next part to my story last night. Sorry for being a bit late but I was out of town over the last week and now, thanks to traveling, I currently I have a cold. Regardless it won't be that long until I can churn it out
  4. Are we capping ourselves at 3,000 words a week? for review purposes? How much of hand slap am I going to get if I go over? I like abuse! (and by that I mean going over but also pushing the limits...EEK!)[evil-grin]
  5. Uploaded a copy of my first file Let me know if it needs to be altered to allow comments and/or editing.
  6. I'm off work now and no longer need the link. I will email it to my hotmail account which isn't blocked.
  7. My job blocks google gmail (but not docs????) so I can't access gmail to get the link. Would you mind posting it here again so I can click on it to open up the shared location Word count? I'm blah about it. When I can scrounge the time I can write but the hard part is finding the time. (Daddy Daddy! can you play with me?) Sure thing... just a minute. (Honey can you go to the store real quick and get me something completely random?) Sure thing, let me just- (Daddy! The cat is barfing on the bed cover again!) Time to head out to the laundromat again :/
  8. So I got about 800 words written on my light rail ride to work I have already watched the lesson one on youtube, a few weeks ago, but am left wondering if I should watch it again? So once I finish with my thousand where do I put it again?
  9. I never double posted? It looks like Rubix merged my post from yesterday with the one I made tonight Oh well
  10. Hello, My name is Dave and I am love warm hugs! So... I was told you all have a writing group here? [looking over my shoulder for a sacrificial animal] So how do things work around here?
  11. Now I know you are all biased towards Audible.com which is understandable, which I am a customer, no thanks to your show, but here is my question. When you mention that new/existing authors should absorb as much material as possible, in order to grow our skills, do you think that one method of absorption is better than another? For example I have been listening to what I deem more entertaining books off of audible but buy digital/print copies of books I want to use more as a reference/guide. Do you think that one way is truly better for assimilation or is that just my biased preferences?
  12. Bingo and Thank you so... (was his name-o???)
  13. Hello and thanks. Now I just went to the front page and did a search for "Comments" (Control +F)but came up with nothing. Where is it?
  14. done It came to me in the shower. The story idea I mean... (shakes head in disgust) So here goes something.... This is the story of Doug. Doug is a good ol boy who works in the automotive department at the local wallsmart. He lives from paycheck to paycheck with a fiance that doesn’t appreciate him. Neither do the kids, some of which are even his own. The only thing that brings enjoyment to him is watching rastling, bashing liberals and their gimee attitudes, and reloading his guns. Then one night while out camping with his friends their site gets visited by aliens. He awakens as a captive only to discover they have him tied up and are performing numerous invasive experiments. They try to come up with a way of escaping as hilarity ensues. Its a prototype of a story. Very basic. I am shooting for comedy "get-r-dun" type stuff.
  15. I just finally got logged in and made my first post. Thanks
  16. My rituals are rather simple yet extremely difficult to obtain. Being a father of two young-ins and a wife who...shall we say... isn't very self sufficient, the only thing I need is time.
  17. Hhrrmmm.... I have logged into forumotion.com and don't see the group listed on the top of the page as seen in the linked screenshot. http://thewritedave.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/forumotion.jpg
  18. Oh oh oh... I want to join Update... Okay I just went to the site and created an account. Not sure what to do next. Update #2... just sent email to address above
  19. Hi all, So who is interested in joining [pulls of sunglasses] writer's group CSI? If so... [answering machine voice] leave your contact info below and somebody will get a hold of you. Thanks, bye. Darth Dork (Dave)
  20. It's been awhile but there doesn't seem to be much interest. (so no interest or not noticed...) Bump.
  21. Motivation
  22. Mine is some idiot on the last day of his prior job. Red shirt being chosen purposely as if saying "I ain't coming back!"
  23. If you want to give more details we might have something more to mush around and see what we get out of it. You don't have to give specifics as generalities will suffice. 1) What is story you wish to tell? 2) Where do you think it went off track? 3) Why do you think its gone off track? (south park underpants gnomes) 4) ... Profit!
  24. Why not copy(Steal)/edit(own) the colors used by the Green Lantern Corps. http://io9.com/5314908/what-are-the-different-lantern-corps-and-what-do-they-want
